Excellent description of how to determine the age of rugs. I have bought handmade rugs for over fifty years, at first new ones, then older ones. Interestingly, the fifty-year-old rugs barely show age at all. A professional washing every several years makes them sparkle. I have also had good-quality, machine-made , wall-to-wall carpets that barely lasted a dozen years. I later acquired vintage rugs, whose mellow colors I appreciate. Of course, the best way to determine age is to be acquainted with thousands of rugs of many different ages, as confirmed by the Catalina dealer.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s fantastic to hear about your journey with handmade and vintage rugs. Your insights on their durability and the value of professional washing are spot on. Vintage rugs indeed have a charm that machine-made carpets can’t match.
Greetings from Texas, Shawn. Good to see you. The 150 yo silk rug is indeed a treasure. It is fascinating to me how Oriental patterns resemble Native American designs, imo. And how natural dyes last for decades. I was at a furniture store recently where I marveled for some time with the beauty of carpets...even the man-made! Thanks for the tutorial.
Your Welcome! Yes it’s fascinating to see the similarities between Oriental patterns and Native American designs. The longevity of natural dyes is indeed impressive.
@@CatalinaRug I am so glad to confab with an expert, yourself, about an interest I have and respect. Persian carpets, railroads, water irrigation systems are things I have always been fascinated with.
Thank you for sharing your brilliant unfolding of knowledge when it comes to the quality and knowledge of historical rugs. Very enlightening. Cheers! Darryl
This is a very informative and very nicely done segment. Didn't realize that Hriz (my preferred design) is third generation cousin of Bakhshayesh and Serapi. It would be nice to see films on the evolution of the other patterns. Placing the evolution of designs in the family groups makes the process of understanding Persian rugs much easier.
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the segment and found it informative. It’s fascinating how designs like Heriz are connected to Bakhshayesh and Serapi. We’ll definitely consider creating more videos on the evolution of other patterns to further explore these family groups. Thanks for your suggestion
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you share your knowledge and expertise with me. It gave me a better appreciation of the factors used to determine the antiquity of Persian Rugs. You presented very well. Thank you.
Not enough info to be useful, but at least it's a start! For example, I never once heard the words backing, warp, or weft. But it is a very good starting point for interested people.
Now I know why many Persian rug sellers in Iran would place some of their wares outside for people to walk on... thereby making them appear older as a result of wear.
Many very fine quality rugs are not used for walking over them. We have some under the glass coffee table, on the wall, on the tables, couch, or parts of the house that don't have traffic. As they are very fine n high quality, there is none of the signs you mentioned on them. How do you know if they are 100, 300, or 50 years old, considering, their very traditional pattern n material? Thank you.
Because many of the rugs were made by women. Also by nomadic people, who did not keep records or may not necessarily have been literate. Some of the greatest rugs are tribal, meaning they were made by nomadic people.
Can you please tell us about the use of human or animal motifs and those with simply abstract designs? I have been told that this also can determine the age of a persian rug . Something to do with religion, I believe.
Did I miss you telling us about the importance of age on a rug?? Is it more valuable if the rug is older for the fact of age and being in good shape ? Should a new rug of equal size and quality cost less than an antique rug ?

My question above expected an answer, not just a thumbs up!! I own a big handmade Pakistani carpet that I paid a lot for and the edges are not wearing well. I'm told that the materials they use are not long lasting/are inferior - I really wanted your opinion please!!!
To my eye, the completely flat colors, uniform back, and crude drawing indicate a mediocre rug of recent manufacture. I’m not convinced it is silk but perhaps mercerized cotton.
it does not matter you are conviced or not. you may not like the pattern or colors, and it is ok, but your perception of its quality only matters to yourself. you are not obliged to describe it when can not differentiate silk and cotton. bye.
I absolutely love Persian rugs the only thing that stops me from getting involved is the satanic design and satanic forms within them, very very unfortunate and off putting...

Great information. I have traded over the years and now have 15, including many antiques. I learned a lot from you. Thanks.
That's great, glad your learning so much!

Very informative! I wish you be more detailed such as the value of knots per square and how it plays a role in price. Thank you!

This video was supposed to be about the art of carpet making. This salesman speil in American accent takes all the fun out of it.
Very useful and interesting ty. I guessed 100 years lol

How many knots in a cm square etctct
Why is there not a provenance on persian rugs as there are on paintings and other art work?
Because many of the rugs were made by women. Also by nomadic people, who did not keep records or may not necessarily have been literate. Some of the greatest rugs are tribal, meaning they were made by nomadic people.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Be honest, who else flipped over one of their rugs to check the KPSI? Pleasantly surprised the one I am sitting on right now is 256 KPSI.

Silk rugs are beginning to creep in from other countries. How to tell a genuine Persian silk rug
Are Pakistani carpets any good?
My question above expected an answer, not just a thumbs up!! I own a big handmade Pakistani carpet that I paid a lot for and the edges are not wearing well. I'm told that the materials they use are not long lasting/are inferior - I really wanted your opinion please!!!
unfortunately the value has dropped dramatically 😢
I said 120-180….
Get on with it too much introductionary padding😢
what a waste of time

If you are not an expert, your opinion is irrelevant.
Thanks for letting us know that you dont have a CLUE 😂

Bla Bla bla so many words and so little good Information. Very American!!!
این یک فرش معمولی با طرح ابریشم است. گول هر کسی را نخورید. اینها بیشتر کلاهبردارند. از هر کسی فرش پارسی نخرید. فرش پارسی باید اصالت داشته باشد.
It stinks of bacteria
