The best size tires for your Jeep Wrangler will depend on a number of factors. Things like how you drive your Jeep and what types of terrain you'll be tackling will all come into play in your decision when shopping for larger tires. In this video, Rob will go over the benefits and things to consider about tire sizes ranging from 31" all the way up to 40" for your Jeep Wrangler JL or Jeep Gladiator JT. Learn about how tires are measured and how to read both metric and standard tire sizes. Then check out what each size tire looks like on a Wrangler and what goes into fitting each of those specific size tires on your Jeep, including new wheels and suspension modifications, and when it's time to consider other upgrades like re-gearing your axles or maybe upgrading them altogether.

35" are perfect. jeep is still "nimble" no huge mpg penalty, power is still there. after that everything goes down hill.

Is he calling the 40" tires 3" diameter tires? With 5:38 gearing, I'm undecided whether to go with 37's or 40's ?

How much you willing to sink into the jeep? It takes a LOT more to go from 33s (on a stock Rubi, or 32s on a stock Willys or 31s on a stock Sport) to 40s than 33s to 37s. On a Sport, all you need is a 2-3" lift, some high clearance fender flares, a regear, and maybe some wheels with a different offset. Sure, if you're going to be doing hardcore rock crawling, you might want to look into reinforcing that diff, but that's not completely necessary (this is one of those things where half the people will be all "I've wheeled 37s on my Dana 30 in the most extreme conditions imaginable and never had a problem" and then the other half will be all "I put 37s on my sport and blew the Dana 30 pulling out of the parking lot").
On a Rubicon it's even simpler. Throw a 2" spacer on that bad boy and you can fit 37s with no other mods. A regear is recommended but not critical.
But 40s... You're looking at needing *significant* trimming. At least a 4" lift (if not more). Upgraded axles (think Dana 60s in the front and Dana 80 in the rear - one tons are a pretty common mod for this wheel). Which means you also need new lockers as well. And don't forget the power loss. Even with a *very* aggressive regear, the jeep will really struggle to turn those wheels. 40" tires and wheels weigh like... 150ish pounds, compared to my 35" ridge grapplers that weigh 87 lbs, mounted. So you'll need more power than the factory 4 and 6 cylinders can provide. A diesel would be nice, because it's very torquey. Or the 392. Hell, even a 4XE has 470 ft lbs of torque (but putting it on 40s with the gearing necessary would kill the point of the car - you'd be lucky to get 10 miles of electric range, and the 4XE has poorer fuel economy than it's exclusively gas-powered brethren, plus it has a smaller gas tank to make room for all those batteries, so now you have like, 150-200 miles of range on your Wrangler).
It takes a lot to do 40s, and relatively little to get to 37s. And a jeep on 37s will be much more daily drivable than one on 40s, and have about 95% of the capability, and be way cheaper to build. I'd do 37s.
