Would you or Henry possibly look into army painting genestealer cult minis? They're one of the largest infantry armies and a scheme that you come up with would be my go to and potentially many others. Great stuff as usual Andy!
I always enjoy seeing excellent painters do tabletop models. A lot of what you see in social media and TH-cam is competition/display pieces. Cult of paint does a fantastic job at making solid tabletop minis appealing, alongside display/art pieces. Keep up the great work!
I know they take direct inspiration from the original, but man those helmets are comical. Unintentionally ofc! But still. Good thing 3d prints exist. Your painting is amazing
For a single color highlight the black looks surprisingly good. Although you can make a very complex black, I think sometimes it’s important that less can be more when putting an army on the table
Mohawk Miniatures has a good approach to edge highlighting, not really the person to explain, but comes down to don't edge highlight everything, only the stuff that will make an impact.
Yessss, finally somebody else who preaches the virtues of the AK Paints. Their Oranges, Tans and Yellows are some of the best I've used. Regarding the edge highlighting: I find that doing it on the more prominent upward facing edges is usually enough for the rank and file guys.
Really been trying to push my painting skill and I've always struggled with faces, deffo think you will be getting my patronage soon, some cracking dark reapers matey
These are amazing ! Edge hightlighting everything is really not needed, and for me it's even unrealistic (unless your are into the good and gold oldhammer style). Focusing into really top edges and more in a battle damaged style is the way for me !
I've got 2 Guard armies, so edge highlighting the almost 400 figs I have now would be a non-starter. I try to do like you and focus effort on the leaders and characters. The grunts only sit on the table for like 10 minutes, so they get base coat then wash and done mostly. Figuring out how to speed things up with my airbrush helped a lot with my second army as I quickly built up highlights with it so no need to edge highlight. Great video, great result that we can all aspire to and attain, then get on the table.
Enjoyed the video. I'm painting a Saim-Hann army and haven't done any reapers yet. Really loved the red for the weapons. I do find there is pressure to edge highlight everything. It seems what is expected seeing all the box work from GW is edge highlighted. I do prefer yours and Henrys way of volumetric highlighting with less emphasis on the edge highlights. It's always difficult to get the balance of making the models/army look good and actually getting them painted and on the board it good time. I've watched a lot of Cult of Paint videos now and have tried to adopt these principles and methods and i'm much more happier with the results. Cheers...
As a word bearers player, word of advice, for the gal vorbak red, do a base layer of khorne red, then a layer of thinned 3:1 basilicanum grey, it'll do 90% of the work, you can then use the gal vorbak to cover any staining and sharpen edges, then move onto your highlights.
I must say that Autarch is the nicest looking black armour I've ever seen? is his tutorial on patreon? cause I might have to join when I have the money just to see how you did him (and shamelessly take for my own use).
Even edge highlighting only the upward facing edges means doing half the amount usually. Restrict that to only the top half of the model and it can be achieveable for army schemes.
Sometimes I'll edge highlights certain things, like gun edges etc .. but I don't always feel as though everything needs it. I have been deducted points in painting comps because everything wasn't edged though. Sometimes the edge hl doesn't add to the piece.
These look great! I spent ages on some Storm Troopers, put them on the gaming table and realised in 30 seconds I'd wasted my time and that my efforts at subtle blending and shading were completely lost through a combination of my eyes not functioning at distance and the terrible florescent lighting. Needless to say the subsequent units made their way to the table much quicker. 😂
Edge highlighting makes everything look better, especially volume highlighted minis. It never takes as long as you fear. Maybe miss the legs out but otherwise... its good. Everyone should do it.
i disagree. GW's style of edge-highlighting every single edge 3 times makes the models look incredibly busy and hard to look at. minimal, natural and scratchy edge highlights are definitely more pleasant to look at for me. i think edge-highlighting should be used with caution, and only where it makes sense. just my thoughts though :P
actually it is possible to hedge highlight with oils which is ideal as u can fix any mistake or even better dry brush with oils and then remove paint from the center of the plates with a qtip imbued in white spirit. Never tried on black but well it's an idea. otherwise crayons but they tend to produce "dusty" results.
They look great. Would you advise the grey highlights and the additional black would be best dry brushed if you don't have a airbrush and using brush? Would same effect be achieved?
i don't know what GW were thinking when they designed these guys. how could they take such a cool concept and turn it into these teletubbie-looking fuckers? :P amazing paintjob as always though! :D
Do you super glue the heads in after painting? Never tried sub assemblies.. Really appreciated the talk about edge highlighting, I often feel like I have to do more and it saps my motivation.
It looks like the model is attached to same the base from beginning to end. Do you find the model quicker to paint then painting model and base separately?
Great results! If I'd ever buy them I'd cut off those damn 'ears'... They'd look generic, but at least I wouldn't giggle every time I see them :D Other than that they are a great update of an old sculpt. GWs seems to have an issue with silly elf hats...
TBH i prefer this look to the 'eavy metal ones, the bright edges on the legs seem a bit distracting and unrealistic to me. i guess maybe with a bit more variety in intensity the all over highlights could look good though.
I personally don't think the Eavy Metal style edge highlighting looks good. Wouldn't do that for display either. Volumetric highlight plus edge highlight where they would actually be is what I would go for if I have the time.
I dont like edge highlighting. It looks extremely unnatural. Edges are not reflecting that much unless extremely shiny metal. I use it sparely and only when it is directly in the direction of the lightsource. The edgehighlighted mi iatures are the worst I painted.
i think edge highlights are extremely overused, and i think most people paint edge highlights not because they think it looks good or because it's something they want to do, but because games workshop do it, and they think it's the only way to paint a model and make it look good. i DON'T think the GW style of painting looks good, and i much prefer minis to look natural and realistic, than ultra-cartoony edge highlighted messes. look at GW's chaos space marines for example; for me, my eyes have nowhere to land, it's just a mess of triple edge highlights on every single edge all trying to draw my eyes' attention at the same time. the edge highlights completely hide the model. when you strip away the layers upon layers of edge highlights you start to see the actual mini underneath, and it looks so much better. hell, look at GW's way of painting dark angels - are their edges supposed to glow, like the dudes in TRON? or are they supposed to be shiny edges? i've no idea :P i love the way you paint edge highlights here on cult of paint - scratchy, minimal and put where they make sense. the same goes for guys like trovarion, marco frisoni and richard gray - some of my other favourite painters here on youtube. if you take a look at henry's recent slaves to darkness mini he painted a while back, and compare it to GW's slaves to darkness, they barely look like the same range of minis - largely due to the cartoony, over-the-top edge highlights on GW's minis. the same goes for any of GW's paintjobs. i said in henry's most recent leagues of votann video that his votann were some of the coolest minis i've ever seen. compare them to GW's votann and they look like minis produced by a different company. i dunno, i just think edge highlights should be used with caution and where it makes sense, not three times on every single edge :P

This would be amazing - Great idea! I would bloody love to see the Cult of Paint take on the Cult of the Four Armed Emperor
Yes! Volumetric highlighting with selective edge highlights is the way for sure!
+1 this
And here I just finished mine. I love how these look even if I still don't like the new heads. also that Ulthwe army, Lord have mercy
I always enjoy seeing excellent painters do tabletop models. A lot of what you see in social media and TH-cam is competition/display pieces. Cult of paint does a fantastic job at making solid tabletop minis appealing, alongside display/art pieces. Keep up the great work!
Such a lovely colour scheme that also seems completely achievable! Great work and amazing video!
Looks great ! And nice to have “permission” to do the right level of detail for you!
Andy I just want you to know you are my hobby hero. Thank you
I know they take direct inspiration from the original, but man those helmets are comical. Unintentionally ofc! But still.

Great looking army, good compromise with the painting. I struggle with getting things painted. This could be the answer! Cheers.

I love you Andy.

If the shoulders and heads pop, they're good to go. I agree!

Oh yes, they turned out great. I think the select edge hilights look great on the models, but they are basically invisible on the table as you said.
Yes I agree with you edge highlights are a pain. I only do a small amount for rank and file troops and go to town on my characters. 🙏😇🇺🇸

would love to see the sons of horus progress
also some blood ravens?

When’s the eldar army video?

Is the tutorial for the Autarch only available on the 10 quid tier of Patreon or is it also separately available ? Cheers
only on that tier
Hey there, im new to painting and the eldar army! Which white is being used on your helmets - is that wraithbone?
Did you add glue to adhere the ground base or was it wet rhinox hide? Thank you as always!
Great results!

Does Andy have his own TH-cam channel?

Good. Now finish your high elves
Too much edge higighting just looks unrealistic. Only the upward facing edges would have an edge highlight. Saves loads of time doing it that way.

The GW style of edge highlighting doesn't look realistic and it's just boring to paint like that, in my opinion.
'eavy metal edge highlighting is terrible, way too unrealistic and cartoonish. Less is more and impactful.
