      I watched the video. The channel host didn't research the allegations. That's embarrassing. I remember an article in a guitar magazine discussion(circa early 90's) on who played the solo on "You Really Got Me". Readers commented that Dave Davies could never play the solo exactly like the recording, While Page and Townsend were in the studio at the time of the YRGM recording according to studio logs. It seems to me that either Page or Townsend are covering as a professional/fellow Brit courtesy for Dave Davies not able to recreate the solo in their monumental song@@puncturedbicycle7264

    Big fan of The Kinks. I’ve read a few different versions of why they were banned from the US. Your’s is as good as any.
    I heard that their managers were totally incompetent.
    It was a common thing during the early 60’s for rich “Oxbridge” young men to get jobs managing musical acts. A lot of them were incompetent idiots who had wealth and connections and were young, so they worked for the music industry, squeezing as much money out of the acts as possible. Anyway, when they got to the states these idiots were in over their heads, plus the band was rowdy and party animals. They eventually deserted the band and left them stranded. There was lots of confusion, bad scheduling and bad behavior as a result.
    Ray said, what happened probably wasn’t any worse then any other band during the time, they just didn’t have anybody to smooth things over when stuff happened.

      That and both Ray and Dave have said that they felt the ban was a little political that the KinKs were just big enough to show they meant business but weren't the money draw of the Beatles and Stones and their behaviors were a good excuse.

    Data that anyone can investigate and corroborate: J. Page did NOT participate in the recording of "You Really Got Me". At this point it would be good that the more people know the truth. He did participate in a couple of tracks from the Kinks' first album. But I'm afraid that this was not only recorded months after "YRGM"... it is precisely thanks to the success of this mythical single that the Kinks were granted the possibility of recording a 'full length' album. And this is due to the first agreement between Pye Records and the band, which was for three singles... and the possibility of a long play afterwards, only if at least one of those singles was a reasonable success... and after two resounding failures, "You Really Got Me" was the one that saved the dishes at the last minute.
    PS: As a detail, the first recording of "YRGM" was a disaster, since it was produced by its management following the directives of the record company, which only wanted them to sound like Mersey Sound (Beatle sound). The Kinks were forced to self-produce a second express recording in an independent studio, with the sole prerogative that their own producer didn't even find out... And this resulted in the version we all know, and that would mark a before and after not only for the Kinks' career, but would be the kickoff for the use of distortion, Hard Rock, and proto-Punk.

    I read somewhere that in order to get the ban lifted, Ray had to send formal letters of apology to Betty Kaye and the AFM. If that was all he had to do, why didn't he do it sooner than 1969? Would they have even been willing to listen if he'd tried to reverse the ban shortly after 1965?

  • @RobertsRecordCorner
    @RobertsRecordCorner 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've never heard a definitive reason for the ban before, usually books indicate it wasn't clear why it happened -- or how long it would be. What source did you find this, out of curiosity? Ray probably would have found his way to make a "Waterloo Sunset" in my opinion. Even the Stones and Beatles, without bans, ended up adding songs about English life by '66 and '67, and favoring musichall to R&B, at least briefly. Though that might have been because Ray started singing in an English accent first! Who knows?

The Beatles only played 2 years in live, their las show was in 1965, only 2 years after their creation as a band. The Kinks played until the 90 improving and making one song better that one. You can compare Kinks with the Stones. Beatles should be compare with the Grassroots. The Kinks is to much for the Beatles.

    Nice video but misleading. False actually. Of course this ban really hurt the band when the momentum of the British Invasion should have propelled The Kinks to superstardom in the US but the truth is....later in the 70s America saved the Kinks. Actually, before this even, Lola was a huge hit in America in 70. Later, when their career was floundering constant touring supporting their concept theatrical albums kept the band going IN AMERICA. The Kinks had huge success selling albums in America starting with Low Budget...Gold record in America,.....Give the People What They Want.....Gold in America....Come Dancing.....top 6 hit IN AMERICA. The Kinks were playing stadiums and arenas in the United States while they were largely ignored in the UK after Lola. The question is: Why did the UK ignore such a precious national treasure after Lola vs. the Powerman and the Money go Round? Just listen to the live album One for the Road to hear how much America loved this band. Sheesh!

    The Angels were supporting them on an America tour in the early 80's. Because they were getting better crowd response than The Kinks, Ray made sure that their sound and lights were lowered and Doc was not supposed to go past certain points on the stage. Well they couldn't give two sh!ts and ignored him anyway. They eventually got kicked off that tour.

    Lamped is a word unknown and certainly unused in America though I get it must mean punched. I'm putting in my list with Queue and Pram and Stately home and Play Yard (playground). Is Betty Kaye alive and has she ever been interviewed about this incident? Is that her real name? 3:59 seems to me it was Betty who caused the "antics"! Try not the Teamsters and see what happens!

    The Kinks had a few good songs but they fizzled out really fast. Their 1968 album was basically a collection of songs that copied songs by others.
    "Johnny Thunder" copies "Green Tambourine" which was released in 1967, "Big Sky" copies "1906" by West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band which was released in early 1967, and "Last of the Steam Powered Train" copies "CC Rider, and so forth. The album is a ripoff of numerous songs that came before Nov. 1968. I'm not sorry for bursting your bubble but The Kinks were not a very good band and Ray Davies turned out to be a bitter and envious song writer (which the YT channel "Yesterday's papers" has also brought out).

      Bullshit dud, there,s nothing in those songs u bring up here that reminds the least of Ray's songs, Ray is a fantastic songwriter and have made an huge influence on hard rockers to come..ask Van Halen, Metallica and thousands of others in business.

      well, Pete Townsend has said “The Kinks were much more quintessentially English. I always think that Ray Davies should be one day, be Poet Laureate. You know, he invented a new kind of poetry. A new kind of language for Pop writing, which I think, influenced me from the very, very beginning. (It was) very strange that I should be so directly influenced because it was from sideways. We were moving foward together. But I was very influenced by him.”
      That has to count for something, no?

    • @JimDeferio
      @JimDeferio 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ked1224 I find the lyrics of Kinks' songs rather silly and juvenile (though certainly not all of their songs).
      The Who are extremely overrated. I used to have TOMMY on vinyl back in 1971 (when I was able to afford buying it) but I threw it out - it was silly and a feeble attempt at a "concept album" (though I did like "I'm Free" and "Go To The Mirror"). I can reccomend great concept albums from that time period but not "Tommy".
      "Who's Next" is the only decent thing they have done. But that is just my opinion (which is based upon listening to tens of thousands of songs on the radio and elsewhere since the 1950's and then music mining by listening to songs prior to the 1950's and also learning three instruments).

    • @aristarchusx1111
      @aristarchusx1111 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      WTF? Are you serious? Do you really think "Big Sky" copies "1906"? Why? Just because there's someone talking over a completely different music? Maybe you think West Coast Pop Art invented TALKING... Lol I'm sorry for bursting your bubble, but talking over music was invented long before that.
      CC Rider's riff has nothing to do with "Last of the Steam Powered Train" Why would that be a copy? Just because... it's a fast song?
      "Johnny Thunder's melody has absolutely nothing to do with "Green Tambourine".
      Do you know what COPYING really means?
      This is not even a matter of subjective opinion. They are objectively different melodies, and this is obvious.

      My sincerest apologies and it was a good video on my favorite band. Thank you for that.
      It does seem you know your Kinks and researched well for this video.
      Even the story of Mick with the cymbal nearly taking off Dave's head was well told
      As one of the 2 said in their auto-bio... "the Beatles talked about it, the Stones looked the part, but with the KinKs the people really though the revolution could happen because they were so naturally anti-establishment. (which sadly didn't help their career as a band).
      Not just one of the most under rated but one of the most self destructive whenever they started to taste fame.
