    Using oils and butters is a sensory experience that is so unique to the Black hair care experience. When I wasn’t using them, I missed the feeling of the oil in my hands and the way it would coat my hair. It feels like love lol. I missed it so much. Now I use formulated butters on my hair and it feels like returning to myself.

    Not using raw oils and butter was not new for me I've never used them. However, I have always used leave-ins, creams, and deep conditioners as needed. When I heard about the BGC method I thought it was like what I was doing, but not using leave-in, cream, or deep conditioner wasn't it for me so I just stayed in my lane and kept doing what I had been doing. Since I'm not a professional I don't know for certain if using leave-in and deep conditioner made the difference, but it seems like most of the ladies who chose to continue or add those things didn't get the damage that those who followed the method exactly did.

    • @loyigah
      @loyigah 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with this. Dropping leave in, over cleansing, and skipping deep conditioning (at most every 6 weeks) did a number on my hair. I was a bit too religious with my new routine and my hair suffered terribly. Just got another chop last week and starting all over again.

    After I had my first baby, I VERY quickly realized I no longer had time for 4, 5, and 6 hour wash days. I think my favorite part about this pivot is discovering I can step into the shower and saturate my hair and the vast majority of tangles will melt away. No more pre-pooing and detangling for 30+ minutes.

    • @marleyhill34
      @marleyhill34 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I don't even have a baby and I don't have time. I'm neurodivergent and my inner toddler is like no Ma'am we are not doing hair for 4/5/6 hours.....😅 Even when I had braid extensions as a kid...I discovered loose ends and I just had them braid to the ends of my hair and leave the end of the synthetic hair loose. 2 to 3 hours max....I will never be that woman with ankle length, booty length or waist length bohemian braids....never... Lol!

    In 2019, I went to my trichologists clinic and they banned me from raw oils and raw butters. They told me to apply leave in daily and shampoo and deep condition weekly and remove brushes from my routine. Now I don't always listen to them. However, when I do my scalp and my hair are very very happy. Nothing in my routine has changed since June 2023 when I got bleached honey blonde Bayalage highlights,(trichologists were not impressed with the dye. 😅), shaved half my head into a bald sides Fro-hawk and my stylist told me to use Olaplex no 3 every week for the dye. My trichologists also make their own products so that's mainly what goes on my scalp. Shampoo, scalp deep conditioner, scalp gel and scalp mist. All water-based and gentle and made by the trichologists. The hair? I just use whatever... Lol! 😅😅 I'm clearly not averse to shaving half of it off. Lol! Cut my detangling in half!

    I undone my locs after 23 years of growing thrm and went short natural, starting off with leave-ins and oil based hair products about 3 years doing primarily twist outs on my 4c hair butt I found that it was quite light. I suppose I mean not dense. Anyway I've been doing the no oils no butters about the same length 9f time as Jenn and i don't believe have had issues. When I thought it was breaking, i realised it was to do with the way I was detangngling with the recommended brush, I was holding it correctly. I found a great curtly hair consultant and she is taking very good care of my hair and gives me good guidance. I have an apt in 2 weeks and I'll ask her about the health of my hair just in case I'm missing something. Please everyone enjoy your natural hair journey. Jenn please keep posting.

    I am enjoying no oil on my scalp also, even though I don’t have the scalp issues you’ve had. But I am also enjoying using castor oil on my actual hair before I braid it. My hair really likes it. Taking inspiration from Indian hair oiling…when I remoisturize my hair…
    I had already stopped using so many products years ago when I did the water only method.
    Also i did the wash and go method for about 4 months last year, but I didn’t like the way all those gels made my hair feel and they were drying my hair.

    I love this! I have 4c hair as well and I've found the less really is more! I shampoo, condition, put leave in conditioner (unnecessary but I enjoy the extra softness), and then douse my hair with mousse. I really like wearing my natural hair without styling these days. I don't wear a shower cap during my morning showers so that my hair can get a little moisture for easy fluffing.

    Everyone should continue to do what works for their hair. All these hair rules add to the stress some are already dealing with.

    I use oils but not butters and anything else that helps my natural hair, I don't really check or care what the natural hair community does honestly

    My Protective go to is Bantu Knots! I have them in right now! I shampoo every week and treat. My ends are tucked away, and I don't worry about it! I spritz it with Water and leave in and Use Castor + Grapeseed oils every few days! I take my Geritol supplements, try to drink more water, eat more protein. I cut my hair to 6-7 inches on top and 4 on the sides. My hair is finer and coily so I find that flat twists on my length doesn't stay put! My kids say my hair looks like Ramen noodles when its wet! Plus, my hair is bleached, and orange and I prefer a longer length to wear a wash and go.

    Lol we’re back to the method we grew up with 😅 it’s been a crazy 12 years for Afro hair gals hasn’t it? Personally I just wash, condition, use a hyaluronic serum, leave in and RAW shea butter because my hair loves it. Once I remember to buy castor oil that’s going on with the shea butter. I can’t do any cornrows but I put my hair in little plats for the days I’m not going out and might wash and go or sleek back for the days I need to go out. I’m thinking of going back to the wig life so might need to find a way to do cornrows. I’ve been wanting to get braids done for a few months now but every time I think about the dryness that follows (my hair needs about 3 weeks of daily washing to get it back up to a hydrated level) I chicken out. Good luck gals. What I have learnt over the last decade is this - too many people talk too much and I think we need to stop acting like our mums and olders had no idea how to care for our hair. The new generation of girls led us down a path of trial and error and now we’re all back to square one. I wish someone would write this story in a book so the future generations of Afro hair gals won’t be deceived by know it all and talk too much gals.
