  • P&O Ferries continues to pay some of its crew less than half the UK minimum wage thanks to a gap in legal protection for seafarers, which the government promised to close.
    On March 17, 2022, the company sacked 786 of its staff without warning and replaced them with agency workers who it said earned an average hourly rate of £5.50 an hour.
    P&O admitted it had broken employment law by failing to consult the unions but insisted it had no choice as it needed to save money to avoid bankruptcy.
    At the time, the company’s actions were widely condemned.

    Considering their prices haven't been reduced, why are people still booking them? If the government and the company don't care, it only leaves the customers. Of which I am not since this all began two years ago.

    The operators are not liable to UK regulation because they are flagged outside the UK. After Brexit, P&O re-flagged some of its UK-registered ships to locations including Cyprus! Is this another Brexit benefit where the workers get shafted?

    I feel sorry for P&O Cruises that will also take the brunt from the backlash of this because not everybody knows P&O Cruises is an entirely different company and hasn't had any ties to P&O Ferries since 2003.

    I thought this was already made public after P&O sacked all crews a few years ago, and a few people whistle blew on proposed contract the Qatari owners were bringing in ?? Part of proposals was an unknown wage, but crews were recruited and managed by a European based firm directly responsible to Qatar.
    Don't tell me this is becoming news now, even with Tory, Labour and LibDem backing of owners and contract?

      @@EllieMaes-Grandad We have some "Company store" situations in the UK and during lockdown our government chartered flights to pick up Romanians at taxpayer expense.
      similar situation with fruit pickers, farming companies recoup some of the money spent on minimum wage on accommodation and food at inflated prices,
      Locals would if hired use their own lodging rather than live in a shipping container with some bunk beds meaning the farming company cannot recoup half of what they paid the worker

    Or, you know you could just do like civilized societies and have all your ferries be publicly owned and operated. It's kind of crazy for me to think that the UK was so overzealous I'd probably starting everything that fucked over what should have been a public. I mean, in the US and in Canada, the ferries generally are publicly owned and operated by municipal, state, and federal governments.

      @petercharles8799 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ferry operations within Scotland and on various rivers in England are publicly owned, it is ferry services that cross the Channel and the Irish Sea that are done by private companies. AFAIK there are no publicly owned ferry operators running between France and GB or Ireland and GB.

      Given that they get food and lodging, and they never leave the ship to land in either France or the UK, I'm guessing this is the reason the company thinks they only need pocket money. How much of your salary do you get to keep after expenses? Not my argument but probably the argument of most of the tourist industry which provides these benefits, including holiday reps abroad.

    • @ricardosmythe2548
      @ricardosmythe2548 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@aacmoveGiven that they don't have the ability to leave the ship to take there breaks they should be compensated more for that inconvenience not given less. There is no reasonable justification to pay anyone less than minimum wage. They should be forced to pay back pay or have there assets seized and sold off to do so.

    • @aacmove
      @aacmove 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ricardosmythe2548 Again. It's not my argument. BUT, The Seafarers' Earnings Deduction permits 100% of on-board earnings to be free of UK income tax. So, they don't pay tax, they don't pay for food or bills and they don't pay for accommodation. How much do you think an employee at KFC gets to keep out of their wage after rent, food, bills and tax? And, finally. I have not booked P&O out of principle since they sacked all of their staff!

    • @ricardosmythe2548
      @ricardosmythe2548 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@aacmove IMO all offshore tax exemptions should be withdrawn across the board but that's another matter. I would imagine the vast majority of the workers still have bills to pay like rent just because there working away doesn't mean there not paying rent or a mortgage. I appreciate your only putting the opposing argument across but as far as I'm concerned minimum wage should be enforced without exception and if it is there is less drive from these greedy companies to carry out actions such as sacking there domestic workforce in favour of cheaper labour options.

Both my wife and I were getting sick of badly maintained vessels that were always dirty and every member of the crew was surly and rude, Now the staff are always cleane and well turned out and reflect the money that was spent buying a ticket keep it up P&O management there are a few other SERVICE providers who could learn a lot from your example
