    The issue with the jets lighting could be the piezoelectric igniter or the spark gap if the wire has moved or is crusty on the end. The easiest first step is to scrape the end of the wire with the reamer from a Swiss army knife or a diamond file then make sure it is pointing straight out towards the center of the jet in both planes for the proper gap. If that doesn't work you might need to replace the igniter, you can rebuild them sometimes, but they are dirt cheap and unless you know what you are doing it's better just to get a new one. 9 out of 10 times the clean and recenter will do the trick, but they do wear out especially if it's been in a humid environment or you tend to burn the lighter for more than 5 seconds at a time. The heat is conducted by the wire and it can melt the insulation or the connection between the wire and the igniter. Sometimes the crystal becomes displaced or the plastic housing gets stretched out from aggressive attempts to light due to other issues. I never throw them out, because occasionally I will combine the working parts to make one good one from two broken igniters. The only other issues that I have run into are clogged jets from either cheap dirty butane or the residue from the cheap hoses on gas station lighters. You can dissolve the gunk with 90%rubbing alcohol and then blow it out with butane or compressed air, just be sure to do it before the alcohol all evaporates or the gunk won't go anywhere. You can avoid that by using a very clean butane and buying a decent lighter with a replacement garuantee.

    I love my Zippos for their old school feel. The re-fueling, the smell of the lighter fluid. I use a bic lighter for everything else.

    I really appreciate your videos and agree with all of your observations especially regarding butane inserts. I don't smoke cigarettes or weed but I do enjoy pipe tobacco. I am still on the hunt for the PERFECT lighter. My ideal lighter would have: 90° standing soft flame, butane, decent wind resistance, fits in my Zippo cases, flint spark (not piezo). I have the newish Zippo yellow flame insert and it comes closest to my ideal. I also like the standard fluid pipe inserts. I'm not too put off by the smell and taste of fluid but the constant refilling gets old. I use your repacking and baggie tricks and they certainly help. I'm only a once or twice a week piper so when I pick up my fluid models they are almost always empty. That's where butane shines. I've tried all the other inserts and they ALL come up lacking in one or two of my ideal requirements. I'm not sure if my ideal is even possible. This yellow flame butane ZIPPO insert is the bee's knees but it can be improved. I really hope Zippo comes out with a pipe model butane insert. That would be the cat's rear end lol. Thanks again for posting your content. Its cool that there are kindred spirits out there that enjoy the fidgety little details of personal gadgets. I'm fussy about certain personal possessions that one carries daily: lighters, knives, pistols, flashlights and the like... I enjoy the journey down the rabbit hole. Cheers from the Arizona mountains USA.

      Hey no problem buds. Thanks for leaving a comment. Yeah I think if the yellow flame was a pipe insert it would be the perfect insert. I’ve figured out a way to turn a regular pipe insert to a butane with a scrap zorro butane insert. Havent had the time to make it though. But in my opinion it would be the best insert u get as it is a just regular zippo pipe insert modified.

    • @Sonic_Ox
      @Sonic_Ox ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply amigo. That mod sounds cool. I had pretty good luck with a Z-pipe insert. Must have got a good one. Doesn't leak and has the 90° sideways soft flame i like but it's not a standing flame and it's not a flint light. Also it's not a Zippo brand so that's a point deduction from the get go lol. I'll be interested to see your mods. Take care friend.

    I really wished the yellow insert could imitate the traditional inserts more like Thunderbird (minus their shit quality and leaking in my experience). As a cigar smoker and a Zippo lover, butane gives me the best of both worlds. Hope they make a slim butane insert soon and a brass colored one too.

    • @Zippofanatic77outdoors
      @Zippofanatic77outdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There was a company that used to make slim butane insert. They are hard to find now. I don’t like any butane that’s set up like a regular zippo. The whole cam spring gas leak is in every design like that. Zippp Yellow flame is the only way to go. All I use now

  • @DellaStreet123
    @DellaStreet123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I think the yellow flame butane insert has a beautiful design, unlike the torch inserts, and I like that it uses flints. One reason why your torch inserts are not reliable anymore may be that the piezo crystals are on borrowed time. What I don't like about the yellow flame insert is that it has zero protection from wind and that you have to hold down the button all the time. Most likely, durable standing flame butane lighters are a challenge -- Vector G and P inserts are notorious for eventually leaking gas out of the release valve when it is supposed to be closed. But Ronson's Windlite Varaflame never had that reputation, so it might be possible. One thing I like about standing flames is that you can hold the lighter the way you want. This can be useful when you want to light a pipe with a lighter that is not a pipe lighter. The Zippo standard insert works rather well for pipes if you make use of the standing flame feature. The standard insert is also good to give somebody a light with an extended arm. When people ask you for a light and you have matches or a Bic lighter, they will often come close so they can shield the flame from the wind with their body. With a Zippo or IMCO, you can give somebody a light with an extended arm if you want to. I may come off as a bit anal in that regard, but I don't like people getting awfully close to me. Last month, a (presumably) homeless man came very close to me, and I actually stood back. I mean, Covid is still a thing. He laughed and sneezed at me. I left in a huff. You cannot take a joke, eh? No, I cannot, I said.

    • @Zippofanatic77outdoors
      @Zippofanatic77outdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah one draw back for me is the terrible wind resistance lol. But I don’t bring it outside anyways. I only carry zippo fluid inserts when I leave the house.

    there's probably some article that explains what really happens but my guess would be that the butane itself loses the pressure it needs to work, in the cold. pressure and temperature are so closely linked they're almost the same thing. this works the other direction too I bet if you put a butane container/lighter in an oven it would explode from the pressure rise

  • @kodyschmautz7799
    @kodyschmautz7799 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I actually use my lighter to smoke ...stuff. so without the butane insert zippos are all but useless for me personally. Lighter fluid is great for a emergency kit but even then not in a Zippo maybe an imco. As far as the window to be able to see how full it is ya that would be kinda nice to have I guess but after you have used butane for years it's really quite simple to fill to the top withiut seeing it. And really you should be burping butane lighters before you fill em up each time and just barely right after. Also too full causes huge unwanted flame. To fill up and make sure it's full you fill up like normal but then when you think your about full you push the nozzle in and out quickly 4 or 5 times push push push push... If that makes any sense.
    In reality, in all practical senses butane is the superior choice for most any applications aside from maybe nostalgic...

      @@Zippofanatic77outdoors And I know nothing about air soft guns, but what I know is that propane will return to its gaseous state upon release at below freezing temperatures while butane will not. That's why you should pack a propane cooker when you are going ice fishing instead of one that uses butane. Lighter butane is usually around 80% butane with the rest being a mix of propane and isobutane. Lighter gas sold for torch lighters sometimes has 100% isobutane written over it.

      I did try that, and have observed that I get a flame if the release is somewhat low, but far from how the insert should be working. If I turn it up more the gas doesn't get lit. After a few days of use it started not turning on the first time, I had to try at least 5 times. Of course it didn't depend on whether or not it was charged and I used good butane which I use in other lighters which have no problem at all. I didn't want to try the warranty and replacement, it's just not what I want. A nice throw of about 60 meters seemed to me a good conclusion.
