that 2006 Miami team (and just Miami football from that era in general) was freakin' crazy, and not in a good way. In addition to everything he talks about in this video, Miami also saw one of their own players (Bryan Pata) get murdered during the season. The case was long unsolved but, 15 yrs later, they figured out that it was ONE OF HIS OWN MIAMI TEAMMATES who'd murdered him. Just absolute insanity.

This was the year that Miami's status as one of college football's blue-bloods died. Their slide actually began a couple years earlier, but it was by 2006 that it became clear that it wasn't merely a brief rough patch between national championships. The dynasty was over.
To make matters worse, the guys went to a party that night and were left outside as the Dolphin and Marlins players were allowed in.

Their "Dynasty" died in the Sugar Bowl in 92 when Alabama thumped them 34-13.
They haven't recovered since.

my dad was a student at Notre Dame when the Catholics vs Convicts game happened. To this day, he still hates Miami's guts, and that was the greatest game he's ever seen. So i understand why Miami got in this brawl

FIU and Miami has always been a thing, on and off the field. Miami can be a tough city, and with the money divide between those schools, it doesn't surprise me that a game wouldn't go well. All the students and grads of either school that I know have big opinions on the other. I'm from the other side of the state, but even west florida people know it

I attended that game along with my high school football team. The University of Miami would give tickets out to local high school teams to come watch, we went every year. They were always games like this where Miami was projected to win big. I think the craziest part of this story was in the upper deck of the endzone was a bunch of high school kids invited to "see the way college football is to be played"

This is what solidified my disgust with Miami.
I was there that night. A short time later the cops had to go into the student section to break up a pretty good sized fight also.
My two favorite Miami games are the 1993 Sugar Bowl against Alabama, and the 1995 Orange bowl vs. Nebraska. Two games the Canes fully expected to win but instead were turned away by programs of superior discipline and class.
1985 Sugar Bowl. Tennessee physical abused a very talented Miami team
1987 Fiesta Bowl. That would be their most notorious of them all. Going to a team function in fatigues and comparing themselves to the Japanese Empire during WWII.

I worked at Notre Dame stadium from 1989-1991. When the last "Catholics vs. Convicts" game was played I watched Notre Dame BEAT Miami. It was sooooo sweet. Of course the only violence was Miami jersey wearing fans throwing bottles at the end. A precursor for things to come? ABSOLUTELY.

Miami is a beautiful yet troubled place. The Hurricanes have been an accurate reflection of the area. They have had glorious moments and shameful ones. The problem with sinful pride is that it always comes crashing back down to earth, no matter how high it might have sent you for a brief moment. Miami, which just lost to FIU at the site of the Orange Bowl, is learning this lesson the hard way.
ESPN Throwback just posted the brawl to their YT channel a couple of weeks ago. They even included the commentary.

Hey KTO, if you think this game is interesting, check out the '91 Cotton Bowl with Texas vs. Miami. Miami ended up with more penalty yards than Texas had total offense, and Dennis Erickson, the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, told the referees, "Drop dead. We're gonna win anyhow.". :)
