On October 1st 1970 in Philadelphia at Connie Mack Stadium, they had a fan insurrection that made this Cleveland game look like a block party. It was the last game at Connie Mack and the fans came looking for souvenirs and wanting to destroy the stadium. It wasn't because the Philadelphia Phillies were leaving to go to another city. It was because they were staying and continuing the tradition of 88 years without winning a World Series. A fan actually ran out in the 9th inning and tackled the Phillies left fielder as he was running to catch the fly for the last out and a Phil's win. The fan said, "No no, we're not winning tonight." TRUE STORY. THE UMPIRES WANTED TO FORFEIT THE GAME SEVERAL TIMES, BUT BOTH MANAGERS TOLD THEM IF THEY FORFEITED, THE BRAWL WOULD BE WORSE.

This is exactly the kind of bullshit Jaguars fans have to put up with: garbage rumors that targeted them as a fanbase. Attendance for Jaguars games didn’t begin to drop below 65k until 2009 right after the housing crisis crash. We’ve been trying to rebuild our fanbase since that year, but you can’t do that with constant losing season.
Ironically, if people keep lording things like “I hope their fans lose the team” and they finally find a way to start winning again like they did in the late 90’s, this sort of thing may repeat itself as Jags fans will likely be very inhospitable towards anyone not from Jax. There’s a reason we now shout “Duval vs all y’all”.

I live in Cleveland, I attended this game, it was an ugly scene, I also had my young son with me, I remember shielding him from the shower of beer bottles. There is no doubt the fan’s overreacted, the mood in the crowd though was that they had been openly cheated out of a victory on national TV, which is absolutely true, the referees should have been held more accountable for their actions (not sure if they ever were). I believe in this day and age I would hope the NFL would pony up some of those billions of dollars they bring in to assure it never happens again, that was the last NFL game I went to and probably my last ever.

@benny pitt, you have to said that the team in Cleveland was screw for the beginning. To make a
team in the time period which they were given was wrong. Look at the last game which the
Mayfield was running and beginning his slide. Mayfield was sliding at the end of a 35-yard
scramble when he got hit by Whitehead, who was initially penalized before the officials conferred
and decided to pick up the flag. No foul, he was a running back then and he is allow to hit in the
head. If I was the head coach and got the call from the league office stating that there should have a penalty for the hit, I would have said "Thanks for nothing, my quarterback could have been hurt or worse." Or look at the Oakland game. The Browns could have run the clock on the Hyde run which
the officials states he did not make the first down (which he did) in the 4th quarter. There are two wins right there. So the record should be 4-2-1 right now or even 6-1 (Thanks to bad kicking game
in the first two games) This team is about to take off.

I wired an empty plastic 16 ounce Miller Lite bottle to the cardboard, with the caption: “NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS”, - (Or Browns Fans!). I was watching this old video of how the Refs Feasco of the beer bottle game. And the thought hit me. That this game had ramifications of the Patriots Dynasty. This game determined a playoff spot between the two teams. Jacksonville won its first playoff game and had to go to Denver because they were first seed. They beat Denver. So the road to the Superbowl at that point ran through New England. Patriots never win in Denver. And neither does Cleveland. WOW! I remember this. Didn't know how close we were from never being great as we were. Thank you Blind Reffs.

But no, looking it up, looking at schedules, it seems what happened was the browns were 6-4, fans were probably excited for the team looking good, then lost 2 in a row, so losing to a team they should easily beat in the Jaguars is just frustrating, all the while the teams that were on the border of the wild card had won, so they needed to win this game in order to stay relevant but lost, and this game officially eliminated them from the playoffs

I remember that game, but honestly in Cleveland Browns expansion team history this isn't even to 10, in 1999 against the same team Orlando Brown took a flag to the eye from a ref, left the game for a few plays, then came back and shoved the ref who threw it. he was suspended but it was lifted once the NFL learned he was injured so badly that he missed 3 seasons from losing vision in the eye that was hit.

Let see...the refs were incompetent and missed the signal that the play is to be reviewed....then the qb can't even execute spiking the ball correctly...then its brought up that the ref missed the review signal which was before the play....then the refs reverse the call the call on the catch and call it incomplete...which in fact it was....it seamed like no matter what happened one team was going to get screwed...it just so happened that it was the team that actually did NOT make the 4th down. Think if they don't reverse the call...then jacksonville would be the ones COMPLetely getting screwed...cause it was not a catch and the refs ignored the replay signal.....
I equate this to what would happen if a coach now threw out the challenge flag before the next play....and for some incompetant reason another ref let the qb spike the ball to have a play after....how would you resolve that issue??

Jeff 1. It was complete. 2. The HEAD REFEREE never blew the whistle. Therefore, the next play happened. Period. The booth doesn’t blow the whistle to stop play. The REFEREE does. Plain and simple. Browns got screwed big time.
EDIT: Ok...upon further review, it was an incomplete pass AND that fake spike definitely opened them up for the grounding penalty. HOWEVER, point number 2 still stands. The Ref has to blow the whistle to stop play. That never happened.
So they kinda got screwed but not really...sorta...whatever. I have no dog in this fight. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS! (Hey...at least we’re not the Browns... 😞 )

I actually like the Browns. It was a travesty that the original team was moved to Baltimore. The Cowboys should always be in Dallas (even though they actually play in Arlington...just go with it). The Yankees should always be in New York. The Lakers should always be in LA (yeah, I know they were originally from Minneapolis...again, just go with it) and there should always be a Browns team in Cleveland. Too much league history in Cleveland to go messing with it.

No team is charged a timeout for a challenge in the last two minutes, it's a booth review. Dumbest comment I've seen in a while.

Maybe not in 2001 as football was very family friendly by then but certainly in the 80's and early 90's it was bad.. I was a season ticket holder to a premier league team in 2001 and ever saw anything like this, you certainly had the odd coin toss at a linesman that normally resulted in a very long if not life time ban but I do not recall anything more?. Granted the hooligan aspect was and still is there but that is something that tends to happen away from the game. Only incident I vaguely remember was possibly in Spain when someone threw a pigs head during a Barcelona game but I could be mistaken.. Regards
