Try using brass wool instead of steel wool. It’s softer than the bluing (what’s left of it), but harder than the rust.. Also, use an all-copper penny (pre-1982) to scrape the heavy rust off. Again, it won’t damage the bluing.

1982 has the copper & also the clad. 81 no guessing but if you have to know weigh them.

I have one that I restored last year. The stock was in rough shape with dings and scratches and an ugly blue finish. I removed the finish, sanded it, gave it a dark walnut stain and several coats of tru-oil. It looks a lot better.

I have one of these. It is a great gun, it shoots exactly where I aim it. Yesterday, I used it to shoot a large snake that was killing my livestock. I 18/10 reccomend this gun for farm use.

I have one of these! It is in 'very good plus' condition found it through a 'swap sheet' advertisement some years ago bought it for pest control in my barn. It shoots a nice dense pattern out to 10 yards or so with .22 rimfire long rifle shotshells..perfect for rats, snakes or what have you. I read somewhere that there were bolt-on mini clay target throwers available for these. Some years ago a dealer had one of those target throwers on display at a gun show, and I told him I had a Remington Model 510 smoothbore .22 rimfire, and he offered to buy mine sight unseen. I hung onto it still have it because it is such a handy pest control 'barn gun'.

They are rare indeed, the 510 smoothbores. If its a 510-x. SB its very rare.

Go to your auto parts store, or anywhere you buy tools, and get a small offset screwdriver. There are at least 3 different types, but they are small enough to get inside the trigger guard.

How difficult are the barrels to remove from the receiver on those?

Not hard. They are held on with 2 pins.

With the Gun empty, open the Bolt and move it rearward. Pull and hold the Trigger and the Bolt should slide out the rear of the Receiver.
