@@Spongebrain97 In weird, very backwards kind of way, his homosexuality actually helped him. Just a generation before, Louis XIII and his brother Gaston struggled with each other, with Gaston having high ambitions to become king himself. After the death of Louis XIII, France wanted to avoid that sort of conflict again. When Philippe turned out to be gay, that delegitimatized him from the throne somewhat, but that in turn made him a lot more popular than Gaston. It also helps that the relationship between Louis XIV and Philippe was much better than Louis XIII and Gaston.

It is well performed to display the inner identity of a historical figure. As long as we remember they were great people, they still deserve our respect. What historians don't consider is that Frederick the Great always said "no homo" when kissing his homies good night, but he forgot to say it one night so he just rolled with it
It is said that one time after he returned to meet his wife, after they had not seen each other in years, the only words he said to her were: " Madam sind korpulent geworden." Which translates to: "Madame has become corpulent." So theory of him just being giga-misogynistic is not completely crazy, but still probably wrong. He was just gay. It is always entertaining how much that confuses certain people here in Germany when they are confronted with that fact or if you remind them. I was not even aware that people who deny his homosexuality still exist.
This doesn’t change my opinion about him one bit. Weather or not someone likes gals, lads or anyone else is only their concern. He was a great king and will be remembered as such.
Thats all fine and dandy. This video didn't deny any of that. He was just highlighting some information not many people know because of the history of homophobia.
One fact that always gets overlooked when people are debating Frederick's sexuality is the fact that he had three or four (depending on how you count) statues of Antinous, the Emperor Hadrian's male lover, at his palace of Sanssouci. That WAS the 18th century equivalent of the rainbow flag. People don't think that there was such a thing as "queer culture" before like Oscar Wilde, but that is so very not true. Queer people *always* had ways of identifying themselves to one another and by extension to the world if they wanted to.
And imagine being so powerful that YOUR identifyer takes the form of putting up several giant statues. I bet he made James Buchanan feel like such a noob. @@laughsatchungus1461 I do wonder why there are people who deny his sexuality even after he ran away with a "fellow soldier", collected homoerotic art and even wrote poems about it. My theory is those people have themselves homoerotic feelings but they fear being called gay so they deny Frederick being gay for liking the things that they'd like
I think this should be here. One of those erotic poems he talked about: From Königsberg to Monsieur Algarotti, Swan of Padua This night, vigorous desire in full measure, Algarotti wallowed in a sea of pleasure. A body not even a Praxitiles fashions Redoubled his senses and imbued his passions Everything that speaks to eyes and touches hearts, Was found in the fond object that enflamed his parts. Transported by love and trembling with excitement In Cloris’ arms he yields himself to contentment The love that unites them heated their embraces And tied bodies and arms as tightly as laces. Divine sensual pleasure! To the world a king! Mother of their delights, an unstaunchable spring, Speak through my verses, lend me your voice and tenses Tell of their fire, acts, the ecstasy of their senses! Our fortunate lovers, transported high above Know only themselves in the fury of love: Kissing, enjoying, feeling, sighing and dying Reviving, kissing, then back to pleasure flying. And in Knidos’ grove, breathless and worn out Was these lovers’ happy destiny, without doubt. But all joy is finite; in the morning ends the bout. I remember being forced to read a really long book about the War of the Austrian Succession in college that must have been written decades ago. That book talked about Frederick the Great and his life for like 1/3 of it's entire length and it never once mentioned he was gay. It makes me really sad to think that centuries after his death people were still trying to ignore Frederick's homosexuality because they didn't want to admit a man associated with excellent military leadership was gay.
Or he wasn't homosexual. You know the logical answer. This isn't the first time that a great in history was labeled as homosexual for not being overtly promiscuous. The same thing as done with Alexander the great.
@Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicolvocanoconiosis I think the people you refer to are a very slim minority, however, I do think gender and sexuality and all that are made are needlessly involved in just about anything (with good intentions of course) and it gets annoying to be 'told off' for just not caring particularly much.
@Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicolvocanoconiosis I'm not referring to this video specifically, but rather relativating your general statement saying people have 'hatred'. I personally don't mind hearing about it in a context like this, but I get uncomfortable with how many small (and innocent) remarks or even actions like disliking a video are immediately labeled as hate or homophobia. If I dislike a video about the flag of Mongolia it means I either didn't find it interesting, or i think there's mistakes in the video, it doesn't mean I hate Mongolians. Do you see what I mean?
@Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicolvocanoconiosis That line of reasoning completely fails to address the crux of the matter though. Dislikes can mean a wide variety of things. Including the very real phenomenon of people just not wanting to hear about gender and sexual preferences in a form of entertainment that is escapism for them. That is not the same as homophobia by a long shot. I agree its relevant in this context, but relevant doesn't mean people are obligated to enjoy it.
@Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicolvocanoconiosis what makes you think they are offended? I feel like you're thinking about this in very absolute terms. I think for 99% it's just general disinterest or the feeling of 'oh I have to hear about this again'. There's a big difference between being offended by homosexuality and being mildly annoyed by it being artificially involved in nearly every piece of entertainment you consume (movies, sports, TH-cam).
I love how homophobes says "his sexuality doesn't matter, the important thing is that he was a good king" If his sexuality doesn't matter why you're specifically talking about it? Just say that he was a good kind, lol
So people are homophobic for stating his sexuality isn’t as important as his accomplishments? Also they’re responding to the video and the comments who are talking about it. There’s no reasoning with people such as yourself who want to find excuses to call everything offensive.

Just a generation before, Louis XIII and his brother Gaston struggled with each other, with Gaston having high ambitions to become king himself. When Philippe turned out to be gay, that delegitimatized him from the throne somewhat, but that in turn made him a lot more popular than Gaston.

I think this should be here. One of those erotic poems he talked about:
From Königsberg to Monsieur Algarotti, Swan of Padua
This night, vigorous desire in full measure,
Algarotti wallowed in a sea of pleasure.
A body not even a Praxitiles fashions
Redoubled his senses and imbued his passions
Everything that speaks to eyes and touches hearts,
Was found in the fond object that enflamed his parts.
Transported by love and trembling with excitement
In Cloris’ arms he yields himself to contentment
The love that unites them heated their embraces
And tied bodies and arms as tightly as laces.
Divine sensual pleasure! To the world a king!
Mother of their delights, an unstaunchable spring,
Speak through my verses, lend me your voice and tenses
Tell of their fire, acts, the ecstasy of their senses!
Our fortunate lovers, transported high above
Know only themselves in the fury of love:
Kissing, enjoying, feeling, sighing and dying
Reviving, kissing, then back to pleasure flying.
And in Knidos’ grove, breathless and worn out
Was these lovers’ happy destiny, without doubt.
But all joy is finite; in the morning ends the bout.
Fortunate the man whose mind was never the prey
To luxury, or grand airs, one who knows how to say
A moment of climax for a fortunate lover

So, Frederick in his youth was basically "All of this enraged his father, who punished him severely".

I love how homophobes says "his sexuality doesn't matter, the important thing is that he was a good king"
If his sexuality doesn't matter why you're specifically talking about it? Just say that he was a good kind, lol
