      I look at tutorials that came with photoscapeX pro. Not very good. I would like to see a practical use of layers/masks etc.

    • @phlotographer
      @phlotographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimkok1957 masks are useful when doing an edit, particular areas of an image is needed to be adjusted but not all of the image. When editing all of an image it is called a global edit. Layers in PSX are quite limited but one area that uses layers is in composites or of course if you use text such as a signature, then that will show as a layer. Layers can be moved up or down in the stack and currently by using a R click on the layered icon image, you can merge all layers. I have done that when I want to use a color for a frame from an image inside of the background image but the program will only show the background image when doing the frame edit. Someone else may have more info. Many other programs allow for adjustments to made on separate layers but PSX limits the use of layers.

      I do not believe Photoshop and Lightroom have anything to be worried about with photoscape X. Photoscape X is simply the simplest and most effective free photo editing software on the market.

    • @phlotographer
      @phlotographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been retired for 22 years (MPA) (obviously before getting a digital camera) and have used likely half a dozen different programs and enjoy using PSX as it is simple and straight forward but has a lot of stuff that I don't have interest in (stickers, lights, etc). I like the fact that it has borders, matte, textures, frames but do wish that it offered layers and history. Did now locate where there is the histogram as I tended to use different tools from the Levels filter. Have not seen how blown highlights and black shadows can be show like in Affinity Photo or PS. There are a few other things such as a poor user manual/tutorial as their own videos have no sound and are difficult to follow.
      I have created my own manual/tutorial and have offered it to Nathan if he chooses to offer it to his channel subscribers.
      I agree re the price which I paid although I have not had great luck with using the clone tool but love the healing brush. If one can afford and hopefully most folks can, simply support the creator of the program and my cost in Loonies was a bit more due to exchange rate.

    I just bought Photoscape X pro today after watching this video, I appreciate that you took the time to demonstrate what each function does, because just by the name I didn't know what each of the pro features actually did. I have used Photoscape for a couple years now and its been an lifesaver for when other photo editors have trouble with particular settings. I do a little amateur photography and it works great for that but it also works great for restoring old family photos. Do you have any tips about the colorize feature?

    another good vid Nathan..I've been using the free version for a couple years..definitely spending the $40 for the curves and clone tool..I think maybe the biggest advantage to the pro version, if I'm not mistaken, is that it can do focus stacking and HDR by merging images..also exposure bracketing, which I dont believe is available in the free version..correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a lot of people would be interested in that ability, especially for a measley 40 bucks !

    Thanks - I've enoyed your videos on Photoscape and was wondering this myself. Would be interested to know if you think Affinity ($50) is a better tool for someone in this price range. The indefinite $10 payments for Lightroom are not appleaing to me yet that's the software referenced in every photography video.

    • @BriNathanCollins
      @BriNathanCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I have heard a lot about it Affinity and I'm looking into purchasing it so I can give a full review on it. I think for a lot of people who use the free version of photoscape x for so long upgrading it to the pro version ($40) makes a lot of sense for them. I think that affinity can do more than photoscape X so I'm very interested to look into it more. From my understanding you can only get affinity on a trial basis for free so I think that's the drawback that someone would have to put up money up front for the software.

      @@BriNathanCollins Figured I'd add to this comment b/c why not. Starting using Luminar AI today after pre-ordering for $75. It's really fun so far. They recommend pre-sets and then you can keep modifying. It feels little you're getting the equivalent of tons of the lightroom presets that people sell and then have the option to keep modifying. Also paid for the Photoscape X pro and enjoyed it while waiting for the release. Happy to support them for putting out such useful software.

    regarding text and saved text -- If I recall you can save about 18 different items. I have long signed every image I edit with either my own or my wife's name depending upon whomever took the initial image. I also have worked with images from real estate and create text for various rooms to add that location to an image that one might now necessarily know what the room and location is. I have not had a program other than PSX that allows me to easily save and then use a template of the text desired.

      @@BriNathanCollins I have to agree with Rick, Nathan. I watch innumerable numbers of videos related to Affinity Photo, ON1, Luminar4 and others and had hoped to learn from a tutorial creator more about PhotoScape X as unfortunately the videos by the creators of PSX don't offer very good one.
      Unfortunately and sadly this is still the case. I have never given a thumbs down on any video of any sort before today. I am not trying to be mean but am trying to impress upon you that before doing a video, you need to learn how to use ALL aspect of the program for which you wish to educate others.
      It is not Ok to simply say "well you play with it". If that was all that was required, no one would need to look at YT tutorial videos at all. However, just like in Grade one all the students needed to be taught how to read and not just given a book and had teacher say "go play with the book an you will figure it out".
      Teaching is not done that way. Do I have experience? Yes 10 years at Community college. A BA degree University of Washington '64, Master of Photographic Arts (MPA) with 33 years (retired now 20 years) as a professional photographer.
      There were many things that info was not comprehended nor offered correctly up to about 20 minutes when I stopped. A couple that often are used by photographers include the perspective tool and camera and lens profiles.
      Let me offer this related to each. Transform or perspective as it may be stated depending often upon the program's creator. Lets use Perspective. The major use of this tool is to make adjustments to images taken by a lens that distorts the image a bit such as a wide angle lens used and the angle is upward or perhaps from one side or another. The perspective control can straighten the image sideways or up and down. It does not require having been taken with the W/A lens because anytime one does not photograph an image with the camera parallel to the horizon line, there is bound to be some distortion. Perhaps doing a YT search for this type of tool and how it is used in PhotoShop, Luminar 4 or Affinity Photo might give a verbal and visual description that would be useful.
      The other one you had a bit of trouble with was camera and lens profiles. Most digital image programs have built in defaults of what is considered to be correct and generally those a pretty good but then at other times depending upon how the technology is used by various camera manufacturers, their sensors, lenses etc have a bias toward various aspect of an image. The selection of the profile will allow you to have a final result based upon your camera and lens used at the time of the exposure.
      You can use a lens profile to expect some dramatic change based upon the camera lens not being selected in the profile but rather a lens that you did not use and may not own to give a different result for you to "play" with.
      I agree that Pro at $40 is well worth the expense. However, I do wish that there was a proper capability of the use of layers. I have not explored enough and my memory is not telling me if there are selection tools but there are masking capabilities. I try to learn a lot about a number of different programs and unfortunately I just don't remember every aspect of each.
      Just a last review of the thoughts presented. View some videos on different aspect of other programs that talk about something you may wish to convey done in PSX and then try the concept on some images that you have taken with your equipment and then do a video about that topic. There are lots of opportunities to do this as the program offers a lot of interesting things. Five to 15 minutes is generally a good amount of time to spend on a specific topic. Giving useful and well done content is the best way to bring folks to the channel and provide you with the type of income stream you may desire.

      @@BriNathanCollins Hi Nathan. I appreciate you showing us the menus in Pro's version of the software, however this probably would have been better done as a multi-part series of videos. An in-depth understanding and explanation of each of the extra features would help us decide if it's capabilities stack up against other software in the price range, of which there are now quite a few. That said, being a hobbyist, I do find Photoscape more enjoyable to use than some of the more complex editors that use terminology that only a professional photographer would understand. Also, the short online videos provided by Photoscape can be rather useful if you haven't looked into them. (ex: Do a youtube search for "Cutout Mask - PhotoScape X 2.7"). As regards to the previously mentioned "proper capability of the use of layers", yeah it's an unusual approach Photoscape takes with this. You can accomplish a lot of the same layering functions as you could in say, Gimp, but it's not as comprehensive and it's done in a very unusual way. Anyway, don't let the constructive criticism get you down. The suggestions here will only make your videos more compelling. ;-)

      @@Krazhn if you are totally new to photo editing and even without owning a copy of the program, may I suggest that you do a YT search for Affinity Photo tutorials. There are a few creators that do very beginner types of editing an go over the whole program. The idea is to see what they offer to get an understanding of editing and sometimes photography. Some programs work non-destructively but I would suggest that you do multiple BU of your files and also it is a good idea to have a separate HDD in your computer for your data. Now if you are working on a Laptop then use an external HDD for all data but then BU that too.
      When dealing with an image, make a copy of the image and work on it so you don't ever lose the original. Once you get an idea as to what can be done in Affinity Photo try to translate that as you see the various filters in PSX and how to use them. The major difference between the two programs is that PSX does not use layers very much and also tends to use a lot of "toys" which young people may be used to and want due to social media.

    I had to stop this video halfway through because it was clear that you had not prepared beforehand, and for some of the features you were just making up stuff as you went along. And some of what you said was just plain wrong. Here are some examples. ‘Chromatic aberration refers to colour casts on the image that you sometimes get in certain lighting conditions especially when shooting at small apertures. An example of this is purple fringing between dark and light areas (which we saw when you were playing with the feature); this feature removes this. ‘Lens correction’ is used when, say, you have an image taken with a wide angle lens and straight verticals and horizontals appear to ‘bend’ . If taking jpegs the in- camera processing will auto correct this, but not with raw shots - so this feature is good when editing raws. Next, ‘Transform’ is used when say you have converging verticals on a building, and you want to ‘stretch’ the top of the image to make the verticals more parallel. I hope this is useful,
