Tony & Chelsea Northrup curious if either of these allow you to later like Photoshop does, melding pictures to say change backgrounds add or remove sections of it etc.
Tony, I saw this video about a year and half ago and have been using Photoscape X ever since. The free version has all the editing features you need to make printable photos and it never expires. It hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it's still very useful and way easier to use than any of the other free option. I recently upgraded to the pro version for a few extra features and as an amateur photographer, I believe this is all I will ever need.
Just have to send a HUGE thank you for this video and many others. As a hobbyist landscape/street photographer this is exactly what i needed. Great instruction, to the point and easy to understand. Also if you guys are ever in need of a driver/ tour guide for the central ca coast area let me know. I would be happy to tag along just to learn and pick up whatever tips i could.
I made my start in rawtherapee and it actually taught me a lot about the way raw processors work and actually allows me to be more familiar with the more complex functions in lightroom.
Hey Tony and Chelsea, thank you for the excellent demonstration of Photoscape X. As a budding new photographer working on a tight budget, this software has been a real eye-opener-it's improved my photos immediately and makes me want to go out and take lots more. Love your channel, it's never patronising and always informative and fun. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the review Tony. About RawTherapee, don't forget to activate the tool if you see a "power button" in the tool's header ;) otherwise the slider might create an entry in the history but will not update the image. One more small tip for those tempted by this software : right click over a tool's header to expand it and collapse all the others, making things less intimidating. And you have different mean of doing color adjustments in so different tool, at some point you'll have your preferred ones.
Many thanks Tony! I've been using the old version of Photoscape for a couple of years now, and I was not aware of the "X" upgrade. You've saved me from the dark abyss of Adobe subscriptions!

I’ve tried a lot of free apps over the years, but somehow I missed Photoscape X. There are so many out there now… I watched this video the other night, downloaded the app, and I’ve played around with it enough to say it’s the best one I’ve tried so far. Thanks for the great channel, and this helpful video.
Thank you so much for this. I was feeling bummed because I just bought my first DSLR a couple of weeks ago and am trying to learn. I was interested in learning RAW photo editing, but I didn't want to invest in the adobe software subscriptions as of yet with such a big recent purchase and all. Perfect, I downloaded one and it is very nice. I will have to learn it, but it is WAY better than the basic windows photos tools. LOL
Tony - you are the Good Samaritan of photography. I was looking for a RAW editor and not only did I get that but a helpful tutorial to boot! Thanks again for your great work
Hi Tony in Photoscape X Pro you can save the changes you make in a photo. Instead of going to save go to the three dots to the right click on that then you will see save project. It saves file as a .psxprj project file. I think this is a great program has tons of features and capabilities other programs do not have. I use many other programs but find this one offering a lot of unique features.. I will always use it to do neat looking graphics.
One killer feature in RAWTherapee is the rotate tool. For straightening horizons or other things there is a tool in rotate that allows you to draw a line and RAWTherapee will rotate the image to make the line straight. Draw the line on the tilted horizon and RAWTherapee will level the horizon.
@@RonaldPlett Independently of the file compatibility, which editor would you choose? I am asking because I never tried rawtherapee as I was very happy with darktable since I first tried it.
After experimenting with APS Elements 15, PhotoScape X Pro and RawTherapee I have decided that PhotoScape X Pro worked the best for me, plenty of very useful tools. Thanks Tony for this great presentation.
Being a Linux user, I have been using Raw Therapee for awhile. The one thing it really seems to be lacking is a clarity tool. I'd like to try Photoscape X but there is no Linux option for it. Others have mentioned Darktable but I can honestly say I am not a fan of it. Raw Therapee seems to be the best option for Linux as far as I'm concerned.
I tried Photoscape X while watching this video and it works SUPERB. Everything is intuitive, I didn't need to seek out tutorials to figure out what to do. Thanks Tony! RawTherapee is way too temperamental.
Tony, thank you so much! For weeks I had fumbled around unsuccessfully with every imaginable tool to make a wire disappear. PhotoscapeX + RawTherapee were perfect. The wire "healed" out quickly and easily. Plus I added some interest to the blurred background. So easy and quick.
Thank god I found your video, I was a little bit overwhelmed with rawtherapee after my lightroom trial expired and I couldn't find anything except for rawtherapee, thank you for showing photoescape and explaining everything so well
My father just asked me what he should use to edit some of the photos he's taken over the years and is putting into a book (he's NOT computer savvy), and this is perfect. I am sending him the link. Thanks.
I used RawTherapee for the past 6 months. Pretty cool, but I just bought LightRoom and love it. Outdoor photos looked great with Rawtherapee, but indoor flash stuff just didn't. Both have a white balance selector tool. I just don't like the way Rawtherapee handled the white balance.
Windows had too many updates for me...when i woke up, coffee in hand i didnt want to be forced to do an update.. forget that! Ive tried Darktable, some of the most powerful mask tools, but not as ease of use as as Lightroom. Glad to see you do a comparison here!
Might want to consider "free-ish" vs truly free open source. Photoscape is a closed source proprietary freemium kind of app. As such, they may change the terms at any time, and your "free" app now has a much fewer free functions, time limit, etc etc. RawTherapee is truly open source FLOSS and having used FLOSS including Linux for many years, these projects generally remain dependably free and open. I used RT on Ubuntu about 8 years ago and it was kind of primitive, now it just rocks and is incredibly polished. Aside from that, the whole fact that Photoscape does not save edits to a file at all, just a jpg, and if you want to change your edit at a later session you have to start over? Even if you just switch to another photo? (32:40) You have got to be kidding. I find that shocking and completely unacceptable, not sure how this program qualifies for any kind of recommendation. I mean, even Google Photos allows you to edit raw and never forgets your edit steps!
RawTherapee remains about equal to what it was in 2016, the UI remains a little bit complex, but in my experience pays off... Besides it can be integrated with both Photoshop and Gimp (2.10 is a really improved tool compared to 2.8 and older).
Hi Tony, re your comment on vignetting. Some of our photos have this effect but from the rubber collapsible hoods. Please consider doing a presentation on the use of various lens hoods and when they should be used. Thanks and regards, Joe
Nice video. But aditionally, RawTherapee is also available on Linux which is great, even though I prefere Darktable which is also a very powerful tool.
I use to do just about everything in Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop. Couldn't keep using the subscription, Thank you for the demonstration of PhotoScape X as I was really wanting to get away from Gimp for doing some of the more artistic edits that I use to do in Lightroom. Now I'm thinking that I will start with Raw Therapee for the Raw, save off a Tiff or PNG and do the artistic editing in PhotoScape X for the final picture export to JPG. Thanks for helping to decide how to finish out the Work flow.
Hi Tony. I bought DSLR since 2012, but always used to take photos in auto mode. But after watching your videos, this motivated me to watch all your tutorials. Because you teach in a very good, understandable way. I am about to order your book as well. Just want to thank you for nice and precise explanation for every detail you are explaining and awaking my interest again in photography!
Thanks for this video. I am a beginner and trying to learn without ruining my finances. Funny story...I was in San Diego sitting at the hotel bar. The woman sitting next to me was with her husband. I asked, "Do people tell you that you look like Chelsea Northrup"? She looks just like Chelsea with shorter hair. She said no but her husband looked up Chelsea and could not believe how his wife looked like her...then he read something about Chelsea being named sexiest something. I told them from me it was the highest of compliments. Thank you both for teaching me so much!
I've been using RawTherapee for almost a year now. I wish I had tried this out earlier instead of just sticking to digiKam for so long (being a Linux user). It should be noted though that RawTherapee still doesn't seem to support local adjustments so I almost always use GIMP in conjunction with it.
It should also be noted that RT can export 16-bit png files and that the currently beta GIMP 2.9x (and the NIK filters, which can be activated from within GIMP) also work with 16-bit depth. Makes editing much more flexible.
I'm glad to see you've settled down into a safer life of photo editing, Tony. I see you've given up the reckless driving and indoor drone flight. Good for you. Keep it up!
Hey Tony (and Chelsea), for starters I would like to thank you for all the great videos! I've learned a lot thanks to you. I have a quick question about Photoscape X: is it possible to put a watermark on your pictures with this application? Thanks in advance!
As others seem to have found to download this trial of Photoscape X you have to create a Microsoft account and that is something I WILL NOT do but thank you anyway Tony for a very good demo
hello Tony, just a beginner in editing, do both both programs handle, open j pegs and allow you to do simple edits on those files. hopefully get more confident and use raw files in the future. thanks for you informative videos.
Thanks Tony. PhotoscapeX gotta be the best damn quick edit for RAW photos I've seen and used. And really, a pretty good basic editor as well. Seriously, sometimes simple really is the best. If you get your pics done well in the camera, almost everything simple can be done very easily and very quick with Photoscape X. And UI is very user friendly (and fun). Again, thank you!
Amazing what these apps can do! I've been using a bridge camera, sending photo straight to phone, then a quick Instagram edit and posted. Just ordered a new dslr, looking forward to stepping up my game. Thanks for sharing
Hi, perfect timing! My daughter is having a baby soon and I want to take plenty of shots. Photoshop is just waaay to complicated for me and this looks like it would be right up my alley. My question is does this have the option for smoothing faces and removing blemishes?
One of Rawtherapee's major features over-looked (or only merrily mentioned) within this video was Noise Reduction, Luminance & Luminance Detail sliders. Far better denoise than any application I have utilized as of yet, although I've yet to use Adobe Light Room. Color profiles, saving profiles and exposure also seems to have taken a significant back seat, when they're major features or require some attention. (The first step I use with any photo or image, is the exposure adjustment, but I maybe wrong here!) Reading the Rawtherapee Manual is almost an absolute requisite when learning to use Rawtherapee, and reading the manual will substantially aid the problem with being overwhelmed with the number of features or functions. Must adhere to reading the entire Rawtherapee manual, at least once! Rawtherapee and/or most applications saving settings to separate files, will refer to these separate configuration files as sidecars. I strongly condone this method as it further preserves the original image from any modifications, whether intentional or unintentional. Very well thought through during the software engineering process. RawTherapee is meant for those that are technically inclined, having good programming skills or willingness to learn; where as Photoscape X and Adobe software are meant for those whom desire easy working software or attaining results easily.
Hi Tony, I'll try to keep this fairly short, I am just starting out in DSLR with a Nikon D3300. I found your video extremely helpful and love your style. I am currently wading my way through your SDP book, so much info available, unbelievably low price, I had to give it 5 * on Amazon! The review of editing software was very helpful, esp. Photoscape, I have a very old version of Photoshop that I find cumbersome. Now to the question, I shall shortly be visiting Andalusia, Alhambra, Córdoba and Seville and would like to take photos that I can quickly share on social media, plus, spend some time on editing back home, adding some effects and compiling an album. Do you recommend switching from JPEG to RAW on the camera as I go along, choosing RAW + fine in the menu, or would the jpeg fine setting give me enough edit ability in Photoscape? I am also guessing that, inside historic buildings, aperture priority setting would be best. I will be on guided tours and I take your point that "take lots of shots and delete later" is the best strategy, however, I will probably have seconds rather than minutes to compose most shots. Thanks very much, keep up the good work, I don't know how you find the time! We beginners really appreciate it and I will certainly be spreading the word of your excellent book here in the U.K. Rick Bryant
I recently did an on-line bid for a blind auction. I ended up paying $24USD for a large box. That's all I knew. It turned out to be full of digital cameras. Among them were 2 Nikon P900's in immaculate condition and 3 older Canon DSLR's. plus various name brand pocket sized cameras. As far as I could tell everything appears to be in full working condition. Do you think the P900's are worth keeping? Would you use them for general photography or get rid of them? I'm wondering how often I'd use a 90 times zoom 🙂 In fact, being disabled I'm wondering how often I'll even use them. I was considering starting a TH-cam channel for Laser engraving, would the P900's be suitable to use in a studio setup? Excuse me for asking these questions, but I live in the Australian bush and the closest camera club is a 400km trip away. Thank you for the info on the editing software.
Using RawTherapee + GIMP on Linux. It's quite powerful and reads almost any RAW format. I've managed to open Pentax K-1 and Sony A6300 raws without any updates. And Pentax multiresolution images hadn't weird color shift like in Lightroom. Downsides: some years ago it had keep crashing on rendering, poor noise reduction and AFIAK limited support of X-Trans (Fuji) RAWs.
Regarding the Win7 compatible version of Photoscape, I wonder what you mean exactly when you say it doesn't have very good RAW support? I guess I can play with it and find out.
Thank you Tony, I'm new to photography/picture taking I've been wondering about and looking for a photo editor that's free. Great and very helpful info. Tim.
Hi tony and Chelsea love all your videos and on 'ins books are great my question is can you recommend any free plug in for overlays use them on my flower photography and I living in darwin Australia m y husband and I watch your show every Saturday it’s our version of going to the movies we both love all your videos. Keep up the good work
Is there no way to increase the size of fonts in the Photoscape menu and submenu items? Not text added to a photo, just the text you need to read in navigating the program?
thanks for helping me, the unseasoned armature, clarify editing. I've been taking pictures for a while now but was struggling to really get started. Many thanks. love your show
Thank you Tony for making this video - Would this still work for 2020 or do you have any new recommendations or do you plan to make a TH-cam update on RAW software. Thank you for your time Mike Nebula aka Michael Anthony
This video was very helpful! Thank you. I have run into one issue though, for some reason whenever I load my Raw files into Photoscape x my picture is completely pink. Any suggestion on how to fix this issue?
very good, i am going to try it but i need to know how to get the raw photos from my camera to get to this stage, my card will not get them om my laptop.
I love how you guys explain things, and I much appreciate you not saying hum hum, like some of the other TH-cam channels out there. Rich in Pahrump, Nv
could try out capture one pro9 and tell us your experience? many people who try it out seem to keep switching from lightroom, but I am not sure if it fits me
Looked at the video. When I teach I recommend the FREE Topaz Studio. It's a great product, handles RAW files and I think it's easier to use than the ones you recommended. Even supports layers and layer masks in the free version. They do charge for some of the extra profiles/filters but the free version provides the needed functionality, PLUS it plugs in nicely into PS so anything you buy will work if you decide to step up to PS.
Thanks for the recommendation. I will start using rawtherapee now, played with it last night and it seems quite good. I've read complaint about the stability, I got the 5.1 non debut but if I see stability issue I'll switch to the debug version.
how is DPP (the free Canon software) compared to these in your opinion? I just bought my first DSLR and started using that for now. At least for me it seems ok :)
Just stumbled across your site. Really grateful. I have been looking for a freebe for my students. Thanks so much for being so comprehensive (and doing all of my work for me)
Well done Tony. I downloaded Photoscape X. Will you post more on editing with the program? I have tried watching a few out there, but not up to your level.
Thank you Tony! I've been shooting in Fine mode and using Picasa in Windows, but just got a Mac Air. Figured if I was going to switch editors I might as well shoot RAW and learn how to edit those. This demo was detailed enough to get me comfortable with the intimidating interface of so many controls. Too, you could do a "public speaking" demo! I appreciate your calm and comfortable delivery style. Not sure any amount of practice would get me there though. Thanks again!!!
Hi tony &Chelsea , can photoscape x do seamless panoramic views (scenery) and also if i take bracketing photos can this software merge 3 to 5 photos to one picture, if so is this on the pro version, thanks
I wonder if you could do an edit with a product (Jewelry) that was taken in a light tent. These are very problematic for me. My white is always grey....no matter what my settings. I have a Nikon D3400 and am using a 18/55 mm lens. Basic camera....but I'm a beginner. My jewelry is mostly on silver chains and incorporates beach glass.
Greetings Tony. I was actually on the App Store looking for free photo editing apps and I saw Photoscape X as the first one. I looked at it but then went to TH-cam and came across your video (this one) talking about it. Thank you VERY much for showing us Photscape X, how it works, etc. It is much appreciated. You saved me a LOT of time and for that I am grateful!!! #LetsGetEditing
I know this is an older post, but I had to say thank you for this video. I am new to photography and found this to be a great deal of help...so Thank You!!!
Photoscape x is fantastic for beginners like me. It also has some playful tools like Tiny Planets, warp, ageing , texture. Etc etc. for free it’s my choice.
Thanks a lot!! Photoscape X looks like a great software for my second computer! How quickly do they update the RAW profiles for new cameras and do you get those updates with the free version too?
I've been trying out Photoscape X and find it to be very intuitive and blazing fast. Your video is superb. I'm struggling to find a way to replace a background, or cut out a figure and place it onto a different background. It's pretty simple in the other photo editing programs I use, but I'm running in online circles trying to find the way to do it in Photoscape X. Maybe it can only be done with the $40 Pro version? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
was trying to access the above site you mentioned ie photoscape X. As you say click on Free trial , the problem is free trial is not highlighted and hence cannot click on it. What should i do? its a pity that after installing windows 10 on my pc it does not function.. Please advice..
I use Photoscape X the paid vetsion. It's a good program but the only feature I miss is to be able to have the option to ID the focus point on the image.
Thanks for this. Still relevant 2 Years on. I've been using or rather trying to use Darktable for a while now as an alternative to LR. A bit overwhelming for most of my needs. This is perfect for 80% of what I do. But I have one question; does the Trial Version get updated to reflect changes in the Pro Version? If yes do you update to link or is it unnecessary? Thanks to both Chelsee and you for all your help.

Excellent tutorial. Slow and clear. Thank you so much! I am using what I learned here!
I would love to see a RAWTherapee tutorial. What you need to know, want to know and optional stuff maybe. That would be great.
Hey Tony (and Chelsea), for starters I would like to thank you for all the great videos! I've learned a lot thanks to you. I have a quick question about Photoscape X: is it possible to put a watermark on your pictures with this application? Thanks in advance!
Can you work with curves in photoscape x?
Tony. You're a mighty teacher. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you Tony and Chelsea for your efforts in introducing this free app. Also thanks to Photoscape X.
Thank You for the tutorial Tony. I am wondering if one can stitch panoramic photos on raw therapee. If not on RT is there a suggestive site.
I have been watching you for a while and this was the most useful (to me) video from you that I have seen.
I have PhotoscapeX Pro and am quite pleassed. It was suggested that I change to GIMP or Infinity... Any thoughts? Thanks Jim
Tony, Thank you so much for taking the time to show these! I now don't have to worry about a monthly subscription. You are the best!
(The first step I use with any photo or image, is the exposure adjustment, but I maybe wrong here!)
Reading the Rawtherapee Manual is almost an absolute requisite when learning to use Rawtherapee, and reading the manual will substantially aid the problem with being overwhelmed with the number of features or functions.

For Canon users, I find that the Canon Digital Photo Professional 4 is a pretty solid program. It's free for Canon owners.
Thank you Tony,
I'm new to photography/picture taking
I've been wondering about and looking for a photo editor that's free.
Keep up the good work
Thanks Tony for this advice. I loaded photoscape but it won't open my Nikon NEF raw images taken with a D610. Any suggestions please Best regards Alan
I use them both, yet, there is a discussion lately on the compatibility of RT with Mac Os Sierra (last version) ...
haven't tried out both yet, just Photoscape X. Marked improvement on some scanned slides from the 70s over the marginal Google Photo editing tools
Hi Tony. I really enjoy the depth of all your videos. Can you please do a similar review of the best free video editors. Thanks.
Thank you Tony! I am happy to see this video. I also like the photoscape program.
could try out capture one pro9 and tell us your experience? many people who try it out seem to keep switching from lightroom, but I am not sure if it fits me
Looked at the video.
Good video but why did you crop it as a horizontal? It looks like a vertical to me (photo of Chelsea) Thanks again.
With 2020 approaching it would be nice to get an updated version of this video. Tony, I hope you will consider the idea.
featurewise, what's the difference between Photoscape vs darktable vs rawtherapee?
Didn't know about Photoscape X! I tend to use Lightroom, but like Fotor and RawTherapee too. Going to try Photoscape it looks fun!
Tony thank you for super help. Please tell us, Will it work with new M1X MacBookPro?
i would appreciate if you can you suggest the same thing same for videos editing?
Tony I tried loading the mac version yesterday and no free app. Any how great video. Thanks.
Is it possible to blend/merge three or more bracketed photos with photoscape?
Have you ever covered Affinity Photo? I know you don't really cover software too much but I wondered.
Hadn't heard of Photoscape X. I'll give it a try. I've tried Raw Therapee and I've liked it.
was trying to access the above site you mentioned ie photoscape X.
