The love Blackthorn had for Mariko was so powerful as a young kid watching this it left a strong impression on me. She was so beautiful I wish she was still alive.
Hai, Seeker1-yv4of-San. Blackthorne (Chamberlain) was an incredible actor, with unique gifts. His emotion in his face looks so real. Another subscriber commented that Yoko Shimada came into his restaurant, and he said that she was so beautiful that he almost lost his breath. He couldn't believe how beautiful she was. Excellent Comments. Arigato Gozaimashita.
She was an amazing actress and my understanding she learned most of her English from the directors son for the movie. She knew some English but was not fluent in it. It’s sad Hollywood couldn’t find more roles for her.
It's even more amazing that she learned English phonetically for this series and still managed to act and convey the 'right' expressions for her lines. If I had to learn a language I don't speak phonetically just for the sake of re-producing the correct vocal sounds, I think I would have a hard time to truly express any of the emotional weight that should be carried with the words.
@Theshogunchannell Thanks for posting this. And yes I did notice the beautiful landscape in Shogun 1980, the 2024 version is lacking in so many ways. I just can not get over the contrast between the two versions. Most of the outdoor shots in the 1980 version showcase bright sunny days and light covered Kimonos and we even get a few smiles from Mariko and Fujiko. Not so in the new version, we get the complete opposite
Hai, Toranaga1969-San. Dōitashimashite. Hai, the wonderful and beautiful landscape is in that particular scene was filmed at Himeji Castle in The Hyōgo Prefecture of Japan, and it would have been so very much better if they had filmed Shogun 2024 in Japan, because it is a film about Shogun: A Novel Of Japan. Hai, the bright sunny days, beautiful kimonos, and few smiles from Mariko and Fujiko are priceless. Excellent Comments. Arigato Gozaimashita. 👍
The reason that she wasn't able to walk without fainting was due to the mental preparation it took to prepare herself for the seppuku. And the sash tied around her legs was to keep her skirts in place so she was not exposing herself in her death throes.
Hard disagree. The new one is way better and closer to the book. This old version is definitely a product of its time and the acting is borderline cheesy imo.
@tdvh2181 if you prefer the new show, fair play to you. But as an adaptation of the book it's not great. It distorts both Blackthorn and Mariko's characters and leaves out key scenes, including almost all of the love story. While it does include more of the Japanese perspective, as the book does, it leaves out a lot ( especially about Blackthorn) and makes changes that don't really improve the story , eg Naga's pointless death.
Imagine if Ishido allowed the seppuku to happen instead of preventing it. With Blackthorne's proficiency of handling a Japanese sword, Mariko would be bleeding out to death as he hacked away at her neck like an inept butcher.
No amount of on location shooting would have changed anything. The remake was too dark and gritty and they changed so much of the story that it's distracting. It isn't terrible but a direct comparison, it is inferior

A breathtaking scene when I was a teenager and an impressive scene today. We can see the pain in Yoko Shimada’s and Chamberlain‘s eyes.
Hai, Ab_gaensedistel4396-San. I agree. Impressive scene. Arigato Gozaimashita.
Mariko-Sama, the bravest one of all❤

Thanks for that information I remembered that too
Shogun 1980!❤🇧🇷
That's emotional. I care more for Mariko in those few moments & can see the love from Anjin in just that scene then the entire 2024 version.
Yeah in the 2024 there's no love that I can see😢
Beautiful actuacion richard chamberlain..l love❤❤❤❤💝😍😘💝😍😘💝😍😘💝😍😘💝😍😘💝😍😘💝😍😘❤
This is real acting. The 2024 show's Mariko doesn't even come close. Shimada carries this with her grace and poise.
Yes she does

See, this scene makes more sense vs the remake. But of course, FX wanted to be fucking dramatic by having John be her 2nd.

Covid 19 ruined the on location shooting for the remake. The remake shot around Vancouver and in soundstages
