  • We went out and had a photoshoot with both the recently released Samyang Gen 2 primes (35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm) and the Samyang 35-150 f2-2.8 Zoom.

Fun video. I have the Tamron 35-150 and primes, and find I hate changing lenses while in the middle of shooting. That's what makes the zooms soo appealing. Folks like to talk about the weight of the this zoom but when you think of all the primes you have to carry to cover the key focal lengths (35, 50, 85, 135), the weight issue becomes less of an issue. I've shot it side by side with some pretty great primes (GM lenses) and it stands up well. yes the background blur is 'more' with the primes but not by much and each on it's own is very appealing.

That's so true. We compared the Samyang 35-150 with our f1.4 primes and they are nearly the same weight, but the zoom takes less space in the bag! :) But still the primes have some sort of character that the zooms does not, especially in the bokeh. So for portraits I still prefer the primes but for events or shoots where using multiply focal lengths the zoom is unbeatable :D

Thanks for this! Would love more videos about the 35 150 - What interests me the most is the Autofocus of the samyang. Can it track fast subjects, even when they run towards you like dogs? That info would be super helpful! Greetings

AF felt great on the big samyang zoom! No noticeable difference compared to my 35mm GM

the AF is quite good already on this prototype model, once we get a full version then we will do a full review with pixel peeping and af test and all the things Kyle thinks is useless :D

I keep finding bad opinions concerning bad autofocus of Samyang in video and also in photo when shooting between isual focal lengthes like 35, 50 or 85mm. Did you also have these problems? I preordered the Samyang after seeing Tom’s comparison with Tamron and I don’t know what to expect. i have other Samyang lenses (primes) and I didn’t have such problems with them.

We didn't had any issues with the AF. The AF is on par with our other Samyang lenses.

I got my samyang 35-150 the other day and I must say it's so sharp. With my copy, i dont have any issues with autofocus since it's quick to find docus. And i think it's far focal, even when zooming in the subject is still in focus.

It feels like a prime. To the honest.

We don't have that lens, but if you check Tom Calton's review he did compare it to the Tamron (the Samyang is better :P)

ugh i got the rokinon version and the video autofocus with my fx3 seems like a complete dud... misses focus and hunts/breathes like crazy. i dont know if i got a defective copy or what

It does not sounds good. We have no experience on the FX3 but our friend at Jay Gilmour Media is using it on the FX3. You can find his review on his channel, maybe he can give you a better answer than we do.

what did you end up doing? did you return it? or did you get the update station and did it fix your issues?
