Love the list as well as other people's picks. My personal fave is the original Toejam and Earl. 2 player split screen and random worlds everytime you play. Great replay value and fun game for all.
I just got Toejam and Earl based on a recommendation from a friend. I love how you can pick the option to play it with randomized levels. That was unusual for the time and there are still not that many games that do that.
Definitely an essential list. Mine would include Ghouls N Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Strider, Shadowrun, E-Swat as well. Bloodlines and Hard Corps. Honestly the library is so good picking 10 would be hard.
Genesis Shadowrun is the most under the radar game on any console ever. I still play through it once or twice a year. Hard to say if I would put it above Shining Force 2 - 1a/1b?

I remember that game. My sister and I had loads of fun playing co-op mode. Solo mode took you on different routes depending on which character you chose. Overall great title. Edit: World of Illusion I believe it was. Different title, similar gameplay.
Great video, great list. Although I have to say one of my all-time favourites is QuackShot. So much fun. Looks good, plays well. I recently went back to play it again and I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Brought a smile to my face.

Gotta say that I admire John not feeling the need to pick 10 games nobody has heard of just to seem smart and cultured in games. Heck some games are games you are always free to disagree with(like I myself wouldn’t put Moonwalker on the list but to each his or her own) But many game reviewers feel that need to be like “well everyone would say Sonic or Shinobi!” But of course we would, don’t be afraid to put together your top best list and add games everyone knows and talks about!
That's very true. I like a lot of weird games, but if I list a personal top 10 for all systems, some Marios, Castlevanias, Metroids, etc. are gonna take the lion's share of that list, and on Genesis, a lot of popular stuff was popular for good reason. Streets of Rage, Contra, the Capcom ports... it was mainstream because it was awesome. It's hard to leave off some of the great sports games like NHL '94 that have stood the test of time, too!
Yeah and then people in the comments complain that THEIR favorite game wasn’t included. As if everyone has the same list of top 10 games, it’s quite ridiculous.
Good list. For me Mickey Mouse castle of Illusion and Micro Machines 2 have to be in the top ten but with so many good games every ones top ten is different and you had a lot of my favourites in here.
There's been a Rocket Knight on SNES, called Sparkster. And Tails can't save us from holes in Sonic 2, we can only fly manually since Sonic 3. (Sorry I couldn't help but point it out. ^^' ) Anyway here's my top: 10. Shadow Dancer 9. Kid Chameleon 8. Quackshot 7. Gunstar Heroes 6. Ristar 5. Aladdin 4. Super Street Fighter 2 3. Flashback 2. Earthworm Jim 1 & 2 1. all Sonic's (I cheated a little, it's difficult enough to choose just 10 on my favorite 2D console. xD )
@@FoxUnitNell No, that was only introduced in S3 as previously mentioned. Perhaps there's been some re-release or mod that enables that, but not on the original console.
Yeah Sparkster for SNES is a great game, it's no worse than Rocket Knight Adventures for genesis. Also for SNES, Konami made a mash up game that plays exactly like rocket Knight Adventures but uses pop n Twinbee characters, called Pop n Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventures. It's sort of like a Parodius version of the Sparkster series, very colourful and bright but it plays the same.
Another great game is B.O.B. I’m not sure if it should be classified as an underrated game or a hidden gem. Check it out as it’s definitely deserving of a top ten Genesis game place.
Mine is Mortal Kombat 3, Urban Strike, Jungle Strike, Desert Strike, The Terminator, Marble Madness, NFL Football '94, Ecco the Dolphin, and Monopoly. I have owned Wii, Wii U, Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 2, Intellivision, Dreamcast and the Sega Genesis console was easily the top 2 as far as hours played behind Intellivision. Partly because of PC gaming is why newer consoles didn't hold my interest as much.
Great list for a great system! Rocket Knight Adventures is one of my favorite games on the Genesis, probably in my personal top 3, so I love seeing it get represented in lists like this one.
My top is Batman & Robin, I wouldn't be able to estimate how many times I've been through it since it's been a while, but I'm sure it's well over a hundred.
One of the most forgotten about Genesis games has to be Zoom!. Such a cool, fun, unique puzzle game, with great music & sound effects, I could play that game for hours. I also think Truxton should have made the list, an incredible shoot-em-up, so much fun, very difficult, just an all around great game!
Some of my favorites were: Rock n Roll Racing, General Chaos, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, xmen clone Wars, streets of rage 3, TMNT hyperstone heist, mutant league hockey, NBA Jam

Although Sonic 2 is my favorite in the series, what you could do with the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge I think was a major game changer. Enjoyed this video. Sad Hyperstone Heist didn’t make the cut... I had my Genesis when I was like 2 or 3 and that got the most gameplay from me lol, but again enjoyed your list.
I know it’s very hard to pick only 10 best genesis games but wanted to point out how influential and great of a title Phantasy Star 2 was for rpgs fot the future of gaming. Also Strider and Space Harrier 2 were great titles for the genesis.
Moonwalker, X-Men, Alien Storm, Golden Axe, meh. No Genesis shmups? If I picked one it would be Lightening Force (Thunder Force 4). The rest of the list is pretty good though.
Beyond Oasis should be on every list of awesome. If I had to make a list I would say - in no particular order - Earthworm Jim Beyond Oasis Streets of Rage 2 Sonic 2 General Chaos Revenge of Shinobi Aladdin Castle of Illusion Castlevania Bloodlines Flashback
There was a game where you controlled a squad of 3-4 soldiers, each with different weapons, and had to fight an enemy squad over a small battlefield with cover and obstacles. Great list. I would also add Vectorman, Splatter House, and Aladdin
2 or 3? Splatterhouse 1 never made it on the Genesis.
Earthworm Jim
Aladdin was so damn fun
Phantasy Star IV, Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Sonic the Hedgehog II, Cadash, Shadow Dancer, Castlevania Bloodlines, Gauntlet IV, Wonder Boy IV and King Colossus.
Genesis was a killer console
Personally, I would have to have Comix Zone. One of my favorite Genesis games
Comix Zone is very creative and rather unique among games. Still nothing quite like it today. I found it quite frustrating to advance in, but I still appreciate the game design.
Batman & Robin MUST absolutely be on every top 10 in my opinion. Other great ones: contra hard corps, comix zone, alien soldier, earthworm jim, zombies ate my neighbours.. and if we go to arcade ports, well all mortal kombats, nba jam, etc
Similar story with my Genesis! I had to work for a super hot summer on my aunt’s farm but getting that pack with Streets of Rage 2 was worth it!
No Echo the Dolphin????? Echo 2 was one of my favorite games growing up. It was absolutely incredible. All in all it was a pretty good list.
that shits scary lol
Got some great choices there John! I think for me it's tough choices but I really liked Eternal Champions, Comix Zone, Toy Story, Aladdin, Sunset Riders, Lightning Force and a whole bunch more... idk if I'd be able to select my favorite 10.
Eternal Champions? It was OK but with the watered down fatalities it was never gonna be more than a MK runner up
Eternal champions would be on my top 3 genesis fighting games.
when it comes to Rocket Knight, you're correct. however it's sequel called Sparkster DID wind up having an SNES port. *the more you know theme plays*
as for this list it's an interesting take, i dunno where to begin on choosing my top 100, let alone a top 10.
Would have added Castlevania Bloodlines and one of Thunderforce III/IV, but otherwise solid list!
Yeah I think these would be the most glaring omissions.
Agreed!
Same here bro, same here.
It’s John Riggs, what do you expect…
I always liked when Sonic gave u additude when u put contrller down for s minute taping on his foot ❤😊
Wasn't Rocket Knight Adventure basically Sparkster on SNES? Or was that RKA2?
Nope. The snes game was more like Sparkster on the genesis but with the settings of rocket knight. It doesnt come close to rocket knight.
Sparkster was the sequel.
@@JohnRiggs Thank you for confirming!
I would add at least Shining Force 2, Beyond Oasis, Shinobi 3, Strider, Monter World IV, Quackshot, Toe Jam and Earl, LandStalker, Ristar and PhantasyStar IV
Thanks for putting sonic one on this. It’s my fav
Yes Ghouls and Ghosts was epic as an early run 16 bit title.
Those early Sega ports of Capcom arcade games rule. Forgotten Worlds should get more love.
Genesis Shadowrun is the most under the radar game on any console ever. I still play through it once or twice a year. Hard to say if I would put it above Shining Force 2 - 1a/1b?
@@patricksinotte5015 I always wished we got a sequel with some kind of co-op. Keep the top down retro graphics, but allow real players to control each runner on their jobs. Imagine the Samurai is protecting the hacker from guards while he shuts down security, that kind of teamwork in real time would have been really fun.
@@DrGamelove Yeah, and healing him while he's facing down Black Ice. Even if it was single player, but you had the ability to switch runners during a matrix run. I would have loved a "more of the same" sequel on the Genesis or Saturn with a new story, more areas, maybe a couple cities you could fly between, new run types, etc. But really, there's nothing like it. I am always baffled when I don't see it in these "best games on the Genesis" lists - not even in the comments sections. So many people missing out.
Zombies ate my neighbors, ExMutants, desert jungle urban strike,Chakan,SF2 turbo Champion edition,xmen2,xmen,Boogerman,Earthworm jim,Beyond Oasis,Shinobi3,Mutant League Football,Streets of Rage,Rocket Knight Adventures..just so many great games for a top 10 could easily do a top 50
Great choices, but I'm shocked you omited Phantasy Star 2....such an amazing experience back in the day!
Great list! The one title that you missed is Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion. It's a classic, with smooth animation, colorful environments, crisp sound, cool enemies & interesting levels. Heck, Sega even paid Disney to re-license, in order to remaster the game in 2013.
I remember that game. My sister and I had loads of fun playing co-op mode. Solo mode took you on different routes depending on which character you chose. Overall great title.
Edit: World of Illusion I believe it was. Different title, similar gameplay.
Desert/Jungle Strike were 2 of my favorite Genesis games
Battletech Sega mega drive... great 2player co-op game
Sorcerers Kingdom, General Chaos, Road Rash, and Toe Jam and Earl. All awesome!
Great video, great list. Although I have to say one of my all-time favourites is QuackShot. So much fun. Looks good, plays well. I recently went back to play it again and I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Brought a smile to my face.
Quackshot was a great game!
Hell yeah, a solid platformer !
Great seeing X-Men on this list. Very underrated sega game at the time. I was stoked to get it when it released and played the heck out of it. Definitely on the hard side but a very fun game all the way through. Good times.
I absolutely love that game
Really glad that you added moonwalker to the list. It's creators would go on to make shinobi 3 among another classic games.
My Top 10 Sega Genesis Games are:
10. Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion 9/10
9. CastleVania: Bloodlines 9/10
8. Beyond Oasis 9/10
7. Alisia Dragoon 9/10 My Sleeper Gem 💎
6. Phantasy Star IV 9/10
5. Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master 10/10
4. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 10/10
3. Shining Force 1 and 2 10/10
2. Gun Star Heroes 10/10
1. Streets of Rage 2 10/10
Great list! Two games I'd add are Comix Zone and General Chaos.
Top 10 Sega Genesis games:
10. Sonic the hedgehog
9. Disney's Aladdin
8. Kid Chameleon
7. Castlevania Bloodlines
6. Sonic 2
5. Ghouls and Ghosts
4. Altered Beast
3. Rocket Knight Adventure
2. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
1. Splatter House 2
Nice list. Brings back good times. I thought the Beavis & Butthead game for Sega was fun. Mortal Kombat 1 with the blood code wasn’t bad either.
Great video and list! I love when people make these list for the Genesis because everyone always has their own “favorites”! So many good games!
Yeah and then people in the comments complain that THEIR favorite game wasn’t included. As if everyone has the same list of top 10 games, it’s quite ridiculous.
Streets of rage 2 is amazing!! I would also have tmnt hyper stone theory and I love spiderman separation anxiety!
Good list. For me Mickey Mouse castle of Illusion and Micro Machines 2 have to be in the top ten but with so many good games every ones top ten is different and you had a lot of my favourites in here.
Castle of Illusion is a great game.
There's been a Rocket Knight on SNES, called Sparkster. And Tails can't save us from holes in Sonic 2, we can only fly manually since Sonic 3. (Sorry I couldn't help but point it out. ^^' )
Anyway here's my top:
10. Shadow Dancer
9. Kid Chameleon
8. Quackshot
7. Gunstar Heroes
6. Ristar
5. Aladdin
4. Super Street Fighter 2
3. Flashback
2. Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
1. all Sonic's
(I cheated a little, it's difficult enough to choose just 10 on my favorite 2D console. xD )
I'm sure tails can fly in sonic 2 if you just choose him as your solo character.
@@FoxUnitNell Nope.
@@FoxUnitNell No, that was only introduced in S3 as previously mentioned. Perhaps there's been some re-release or mod that enables that, but not on the original console.
@@FoxUnitNell no. Go play it right now, and try it. He can't fly in that game when you're playing as him.
Alien Storm never gets enough credit. Glad you included that.
Always another fantastic upload my man! Keep doing what you doing and here to give my support dude!
Michael Jackson sure loved kids. Even hunting for them in the video games lol.
Rocket Knight Adventure was a blast!
They do have rocket knight adventures in snes. It's called sparkster.
I also think Truxton should have made the list, an incredible shoot-em-up, so much fun, very difficult, just an all around great game!
masterpiece puzzle game and love COME ON BOYYYY!!!!!
Some of my favorites were: Rock n Roll Racing, General Chaos, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, xmen clone Wars, streets of rage 3, TMNT hyperstone heist, mutant league hockey, NBA Jam
Sonic was the game that lured me away from 8bit micro computers and into consoles ❤
Speccy?
@@RockTo11 Yes, the almighty Spectrum 👍
Descent list, For sure I'd have the sonic games, golden axe, Streets of Rage, and MJ moonwalker is a classic!!! I'm surprised you gave no love for Altered Beast, Toe Jam N Earl, Ri star, road rash, and comix Zone.
Yeah Sonic 3 with the Sonic and Knuckles attachment was really good
*Top* *Ten* *Side* *Scrollers* - *Sega* *Genesis”*
Did I just correct your video title?
Yes. I think I did.
@4:25
“Punch punch kick-“
Somewhere-
Parappa the Rapper smiled.
I know it’s very hard to pick only 10 best genesis games but wanted to point out how influential and great of a title Phantasy Star 2 was for rpgs fot the future of gaming. Also Strider and Space Harrier 2 were great titles for the genesis.
I remember picking up Haunting staring Polterguy back in the day, and its kind of a go to for me now.... Decap-Attack is another good one as well.
I think Altered Beast deserved a spot on this list, but all in all, great list!
Moonwalker, X-Men, Alien Storm, Golden Axe, meh. No Genesis shmups? If I picked one it would be Lightening Force (Thunder Force 4). The rest of the list is pretty good though.
I loved Earthworm Jim 2, Sonic 3, and the Mortal Kombats.
Same
Beyond Oasis should be on every list of awesome.
If I had to make a list I would say - in no particular order -
Earthworm Jim
Beyond Oasis
Streets of Rage 2
Sonic 2
General Chaos
Revenge of Shinobi
Aladdin
Castle of Illusion
Castlevania Bloodlines
Flashback
I had my fingers crossed for Phantasy Star IV, that's my favorite game possibly of all time.
Yeah, him leaving that out is a crime. Absolutely one of the 10 best on Genesis.
There was a game where you controlled a squad of 3-4 soldiers, each with different weapons, and had to fight an enemy squad over a small battlefield with cover and obstacles. It had really nice graphics, big sprites, cartoony style of art. Forgot the name. But it was surprisingly fun to play. I can't remember the name.
When you remember let me know please
@@brianjackson3031 Yeah I was thinking about it and I for some reason "Sargent Slaughter" kept popping into my brain. But then I thought ... isn't that a wrestler?
So then I had an epithany! I THINK it was called "General Chaos"!
*edit* And a quick googe search says it was! Haha! That was a great game. Lots of fun and very original.
Many crap on the third Streets of Rage but I liked it a lot. Anways here is my top 10 Sega Genesis games:
1. Sonic The Hedgehog 2
2. Sonic and Knuckles
3. Alisia Dragoon
4. Streets of Rage
5. Streets of Rage 2
6. Shinobi 3
7. Revenge of Shinobi
8. Thunder Force II
9. World of Illusion
10. Quackshot
SoR is actually the best gameplaywise level design and depth. But The amthmosphere and musics ruined the experrience for some people. Music in 1 and 2 were too good. But I agree with you. A Top 10 is impossible. Top 40 was really to make an it's a minimum.
@@michaelromeo9567 All lists are subjective and can be clouded with nostalgia for many reasons for a game making a list and many may not be on everyone's respective lists because they may not have played a particular game. Like I have Alisia Dragoon on my list but I haven't seen that game on any TH-camrs top 10 Sega Games list yet and I have likely seen at least 40 or so.
@@randybradley4151 Yeah , lot of Japanese exclusives are missing too in western lists.
@Benjamin Owuye Jagun Was never keen on Castle of Illusion or Golden Axe but that is your list and it's a good one.
Loved Quackshot
This is a VERY respectable list. I agree wholeheartedly!!!
My number 1 is Strider after some thought
No mentions of Kid Chameleon? Always seemed like such a uniquely rich and dense game. Would have been on my list :)
I think "My Top 10 favorite Genesis Games" would be a more apt title. :)
These are not my favorite Top 10 Genesis games or it would've been a very different list, save for maybe Streets of Rage 2
Ranger X, Sonic 2 and Hyperstone Heist are my favorites
Such a great list! I spent so much time playing Moonwalker in the arcade. Then they had it at the old Tiger Mart on Nob Hill, both on 3rd and 24th at one point.
I played it all the time there. 2 blocks from my house, can't go wrong.
You have some great games in here. I am always a little suprized that the Zombies ate my neighbors don't show up in best of lists too often. That was truly a great quirky game.
I'll also recommend NHL Hockey (ALL), MUSHA and Blades of Vengeance.
1) Castlevania Bloodlines (I bleed for this game, it's the only way to get the cartridge to work)
2) Contra Hard Corps (Hard 2 tha Corps, Brownie is the secret ingredient/cheat code)
3) Mega Turrican (Mega fan of everything Turrican)
4) Trouble Shooter (WOW, WTH did I just play?)
5) Ghouls & Ghost (groin cloth)
6) Alisia Dragoon (Alisia rules & has it all)
7) X-Men Clone Wars (90's X-MEN finest era)
8) Ex-Mutants (Quirky comic book fun)
9) Phelios (Erotic Greek foreplay..I mean gameplay)
10) Monopoly (Addicted, not kidding)
✌️💀🎮
was looking for Earthworm Jim in this list
its not exclusive to the genesis
Rocket Knight Adventures is one of my top 5 all time favorite platformers of all time. Pure arcade fun!
Man, Xmen was life for me as a kid. I was so crushed when I made it to the final Magneto fight and got a game over. Still never beat it
Second game was waaay better. I had both. Remember that level where you had to restart your console ?
@@Gatorade69 yeah second was way better
Most people never beat the game because you had to reset your console at the end of the Mojo level, to reach the last level.
Here from your Retro Show (UK podcast) interview and sniffing around for ROM hack and homebrew content. Will keep looking...
I'm sure I'm alone on this, but one of my favorite SEGA games was Earnest Evans. I loved most of the Wolf Team games, but that one blew me away as a kid. I won't deny that it's kind of a pile of crap, but I still love it. I've had my complete copy since I was 6, and I make my friends play it occasionally because I'm petty.
Streets of rage 2 was my best game here, and the sound track was 💥
Riggs! Hancock is going to go altered beast mode on you!!! You’re touching his beloved Sega now!!!!
