Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.
COMSUBLANT is like: "Go sink that Soviet submarine!"
"No, not that one!"
"No, not that one either!"
Great, now i can't get that bloody Narwhal song out of my mind.
Looking forward to this. I tend to find NATO campaigns are often a lot more tense since there's more emphasis on stealth. Although, must feel like a holiday after slumming it in the Whiskey recently, haha
Nice to see you enjoy a nice Cold Waters vid. Maybe you could also have a run in a Cold War submarine on your channel? Telling a nice story is definitely your thing :-)
The struggle of the Whiskey class just makes it much more enjoyable imho.
The NATO campaign certainly is a bit more tense for sure! Having that victor so close was awesome. You are right though it is like day and night compared to the Whiskey haha.
Stealth is nice to play, but for a viewer, especially one not accustomed to the game, it lacks tension. Though the literal close encounter was impressive, overall it felt like bullying hapless children.
Dave, you have not been showing up in my feed. Glad you posted. I've some catching up to do on your posts.
"I doubt it's going to be a Whiskey or something like that operating all on its lonesome."
Yeah what kind of nutcase would take a Whiskey on patrol without backup?
Well, if politburo dictated that, no soviet submarine skipper dares to object..
And since soviet politburo usually made of from 60s to 70s years of age politicians..
The probability of absurd commands emerged out of theirs collective senility is rather high..
Marko Ramius remains a master tactician
@@DerOberfeldwebelbut he didnt sailed on a whiskey, did he :P
i Love how this game creates stories and tension by sheer gameplay mechanics.
Like... you are cruising and then you are stopped by a contact. You get in and it comes up to be a random merchant. You are about to leave and then officer says "NEW CONTACT BEARING XYZ". You have a sudden "what?!" moment and scramble to identify it, hoping for it to be some other merchant or perhaps some outdated patrol sub. And then to your horror you identify it as Sierra II or Akula class. And then you hear
"TORPEDO IN THE WATER!"
yeah that's definitely going have a high pucker factor for sure
Great moment when you were at 2 knots and 90 degrees to the enemy sub. At that point they either launched or every second their firing solution got worse and yours increased. Then you set your turn to continue to be both quiet and nose on to the enemy. Perfect.
Great job! A lot of my instructors came from Narwhal right after she was decommissioned, so I heard LOTS of stories about her when I was in training.
Also, jjst a couple of things:
1) USS Narwhal was based at Naval Base Charleston, SC until 1994 (there's a great picture of her submerged in the Charles River during Hurricane Hugo in 1989).
2) USS Narwhal was her own class of boat, but based on the 637 (Sturgeon) class, with a different propulsion plant and main machinery layout, which made her the quietest attack boat in the fleet until Seawolf. I'm guessing that may have been a bit of a freudian slip there. :)
Looking forward to this series!
Yeah I misspoken there haha. Thanks for catching it and I appricatite the information you provided!
I was aboard USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) and moored at the Polaris Missile Facility, Atlantic (POMFLANT) for Strategic Offload when Hugo hit. We could hear over the radio that "a" submarine had broken loose from its mooring during the storm but did not know it was Narwal. When Narwal was in port, they always mounted a giant spike onto their sail.
It is widely know that she was quiet. In fact she is too loud in this version of the mod. An alpha can be as quiet as she is which is ridiculous.
During my time on subs from 80-86, Narwhal was known as a spec op boat so i find it unrealistic that she would be deployed as a G-I-UK gatekeeper because she was so valuable as a one off quiet boat that was more suited for intel collection missions. The gatekeeper role would have been filled by the more than capable standard Sturgeon class sub (minus Narwhal and Parche) in that era plus some 688's.. The first gen LA's of that era had the speed to keep up with carrier and battleship task forces so they were primarily used to screen them in addition to some standalone ASW work, but since they weren't under ice capable in that generation, the job of patrolling the bastions also fell to the 637's.
I also agree that Narwhal is too loud for this mod - it should have a signature similar to the Ohio class - in other words a hole in the ocean.
@@larrydingethal8406 i edited mine to go around 110 dB in silent running. 115 in the 1968 campaign. The 1968 campaign with the Narwall becomes unique. The sensors available fir everyone are much worse and you are so quiet you are undetectable. I can literally park myself and allow a soviet sub doing 10 knots to pass under me without it being aware of where I am. You are a ghost... And for 1968, your speed is more than adequate for an SSN.
Thanks for remaining the best in this genre
Thanks :)
Thanks Wolfpack for thinking of others. Cold waters has got to be some of the best series you have done and your Chanel in my opinion is the best War sim content creator out there. Hope you have a great day.
Just imagine how scary this was to actually be in. You’re cruising along then you’re suddenly taking on water and sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
Total respect to you for putting the USSR playthroughs on hold and completely understand.
Love watching you play cold water. As much as I enjoyed the whisky playthrough and watching an older boat I fully understand the change. Keep up the good work
I support you in your efforts to bring awareness to the current situation in Ukraine.
Thank you
I like the occasional 80's CRT filter your using, compliments the 80's era campaign nicely.
Narwhal narwhal swimming in the ocean causing a commotion cause he is so awesome.
Currently playing a NATO '84 campaign in the North Atlantic with the Skipjack, it is pretty tough, since that sub is pretty loud, at 5 Knots, Silent Running, at about 145 dB.
If I'm close to enemy subs, like around 5-7,5 km, they either can hear me pretty soon or immediately hear me in case of high tech soviet subs.
So I rely on deception tactics too like firing from the baffles and dog-legging, especially the later is the mightiest advantage NATO subs have with the wire-guided torpedoes.
Making the enemy fire into the totally wrong direction, because they think, you shot a straight running torpedo.
Just today I had a mission to intercept a Cruise Missile Submarine, which I barely managed (I attacked the wrong sub group, sinking 3 Foxtrots, that was a hell of a shoot out), I sneaked into her baffles, torpedo with passive sonar down her course. At no point she went alarmed, they got struck in their aft by the torpedo and they had no clue, that I was out there, not even a counter launch :D
This popped up in my feed for some reason. I haven't played sub games, but I was a reactor operator on the Barb in 1984. Of course, we were in the Pacific, not the Atlantic.
You wouldn't believe how stressful it is to watch these, even though the whole Navy stuff was a lifetime ago. A torpedo in the water is like a flashback to hearing the XXX alarm go off in the Sea of Okhotsk, not that that ever really happened of course. ;). Around the time of KAL007, things were pretty touchy in the region.
If I don't stress out too much, I'm gonna have to play the game on the Barb. 1984 was after the Mare Island refit and the sonar guys said we had the best sonar system in the fleet. We couldn't go as fast as the LA class, but we could go deeper and at 4 knots on the EPM, we were as quiet as an Ohio.
One of the coolest things about this game is seeing your fish get a proper target. Seeing the explosive burst and watching (and hearing!) the sub or surface contact sink in the distance is just spooky. Cold Waters really is a great game.
ahhh the effects of the age of VCRs.. Nice intro..!! (salute to the Betamax and VHS owners)
Great results on the two victors...
The second was visually stunning and exceptionally well thought through.
Many people have made videos on TH-cam as regard cold waters, but this is by far the very best representation of the game to date 👏
Keep up the great work.
🗡️🇺🇲🗡️
Love the beginning of the video got that old hunt for the Red October vibe with the green text and the digital sound of it typing good job
I was giggling like a maniac when the Victor II passed in front of you like that....
18:04
oh my god… the tension right there 😳😳😳
Just finished listening to The Hunt for Red October and this scratches an itch. Great job on acing two Victors. Second one was dead before she even knew she was in danger. Awesome job.
Man, I need to revisit that book. I finished relistening to Red Storm Rising last fall, it's so good
To follow up on the victor joke, my mind went to airplane.
Roger Rodger, what's our vector Victor, di we have our clearance Clarence?
I also support you in your decision.
Don't want to wait another week for a new episode, hope it isn't that long
I'll be making episodes bi weekly :)
Hold your breath excitement!! Those were nice "Victor-ies"!
Man these series got me playing Cold Waters again. I have learned a bit from you, thanks for the videos.
18;01 the way the Victor passes is sinister
I will miss the Whisky, as those games were clearly a great challenge. Still, I can clearly understand why you would not wish to continue that series. Always a pleasure. Thank you for your posts.
It’s like you knew I was watching your whole skipjack series I’m so happy rn
I love the text scroll noise, it has that fantastic Hunt for the Red October vibe
revesiting this wonderful campaign for 2023 ! happy new year !
Ah YES Bro, I just Love Cold Waters! The underwater suspense, the tech, the FUN! Thanks for bringing up a new CW series!
16:15 - "Best defense, no be there." --- Mr. Miyagi
Ooh, would have been sorely tempted to dive that fish straight into the back of the sail on that Vic.
I honestly picked up Cold Waters and started playing it just because of your series. Thanks so much for sparking my interest!
I think this could be set in 2022 considering current circumstances.
I love the VHS tracking. Really sets the tone ❤
High suspense under the high seas! That second victor strike was a sheer strike of naval mastery. Great work!
I personally don't think you need to worry about playing "the baddies" in what is after all a game, but fully understand your thinking in the current situation. Donations is a great touch btw.
Thinking in categories of baddies and good guys is faulty thinking.
@@Njordin2010 Er why exactly? Because you've decided it is? Also, note I did the air-quotes thing.
Found your channel from Stealth17. This and a couple other videos convinced me to buy the game once I get home.
I know it seems low energy but this kind of slow, steady with big payoff and minimal risk is awesome to watch and learn from.
I can just imagine every single person in that Narwhal was holding their breath when the Victor II passed by in front of them.
So if you wanna drive like a nuke boat captain, NEVER change course, speed and/or depth at the same time. IRL, sonar will yell at you.
Followed you now for close to a year. I do not comment, have no SM to share. But as to you comment about opening series. I will definitely say my part to keep you going. Thanking you much for the entertainment.
Man, I love the Cold Waters soundtrack. Love watching you play!
I love the intros you create, they are so immersive!
Respect and understanding for your decision. Glad we're still able to get some great content.
great way to kick off the new campaign. loved that stealth kill - i thought you were going to slip up and stab them
LETS GOO ANOTHER WOLFPACK SERIES
Maybe that 2nd Victor heard about the 1st one and kicked his pig (cavetated) to get into the battle area, only to find out he WAS in the battle area. Great Cinema as always (esp. the 'Whale's eye-view').
Good thing this is a video game. If it were real I bet you would be scared to be that close!
So this is basically slient hunter but in both *MODERN TIMES AND IN ALTERNATE TIME LINE* sounds fun
Very classy of you to do this. I love your other series but appreciate you putting them on hold for now. Big fan of yours.
I really love the production value of these videos. The VHS effects especially.
Making like a hole in the water, that was close!
Red Storm Rising came out in 1986, not 1988. I first read it when it came out when I was in the 9th grade, and I was in a drill pipe band that toured the world every summer. I bought copies of RSR in every country I visited, as they all had different covers. I have a dozen+ hardcover and a couple dozen various paperbacks (yes, it's obviously my favorite fiction book, the battle of Alfeld being one of the best written battles in fiction history IMO).
Anyhow, EXCELLENT video, as usual, your narration and use of cutscenes/etc is truly professional. I could watch these all day. I've been having trouble getting this mod to work with Cold Waters, I wish it would work properly for me.
Thanks for this. I haven't played for a couple of years, this had made me reinstall today!
Doing the right thing is well...doing the right thing! I applaud your decision and stand beside you, not behind you! We are seeing a wrong in the real world and everything we can do, no matter how small, MATTERS! Diggit! Now lets get to the distraction because we need that! If only for 20-30 min! Love you man!!!! Enjoy the channel very much! Hobo out!
Cool to see another TH-camr play this.
After Jingles stopped playing, I watched MagsTV but looking for more
Always love to see more of the Cold waters campaign. During the height of the cold war, the technical gap between US/Soviet on submarine warfare was one of the key reason that the Soviet was unwilling to wage any major conflicts with the NATO. They knew they can't detect the US subs, and that means the nuclear warhead can potentially be launched towards Soviet any time anywhere in surprise.
Looking forward for the South China Sea campaign soon since that seems to be the most challenging from the US stand point.
A shame M1 Poltava escaped. She was indeed an enemy merchant vessel designated by the crew as such on the map by a red color. If a merchant vessel is neutral, it would be mark by a green dot.
Good videos, as always, keep up the good work.
If there is anyone I'd consider more skilled than you at technical matters of submarines, which in turn affects gameplay ability, that would be Jive Turkey.
However, even as No.2 Captain, your skill at combining entertainment and narrative ability into the series makes for MUCH better experience overall. Should this be interpreted as leadership ability, then you're definitely No.1 Admiral among this niche genre.
As usual, love your videos!
He's been on a strange kick lately. He posted a pro-China video about Taiwan 2 weeks ago and then nothing since then. His pinned comment on that vid is also strange. Have a look.
@@cliffordcrimson7124 Yeah....there's a reason I quit following him a couple of years ago...
@@tspencer227 Agreed, I used to watch all of his Cold Waters gameplay until he started talking about weird political stuff and playing Alex Jones soundbites on his videos. A shame because it was really good content before that.
@@Coddykin there's a longer conversation in general about a lot of that with recent military retirees/ veterans in general- it's disheartening how much we're seeing of that in our community.
commenting and boosting engagement
love yr work, ty for the video production!
Cold waters is what got me into your channel first, I'm so glad to see it again
This reminds of the movie Hunter Killer starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman.
What a tense first two engagements! Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your first patrol o7
Really appreciate your sensitivity to this situation.
I do wish that one of these submarine games allowed you to play as the RN. I might be tempted into buying one if the RN was an option.
The Dot Mod does include the Trafalgar class in the 1984 Campaign. And the Epic mod has much more RN options
Lets go Wolfpack!
Always love your stuff man. This one is fun for me cause 1984 is the year I was born :)
There were 14 Permit Class Subs built. The lead ship Thresher sank in an accident, so the class was renamed to Permit. Not a one off.
I misspoke. I ment to say the Narwal. Which is the submarine I am using.
good stuff. this is a game that i haven't been able to get a good handle on and i've always ended up in some kind of diving and surfacing corkscrew trying to run away from torpedoes. i feel like i could almost play half competently now after having watched this one.
WP awesome hunting! Can't wait to binge watch this series!
Great to see such an interesting series. Since I was in the merchant marine during this time, I could easily have been the target of Soviet subs. Go get them!
I loved your u boat series and your Whiskey, and i know I'll enjoy this one as well
rewatching the playlist this is on. love the intensity of these videos ❤
So shiny, a new series of torpedoes
It is the right thing to do with everything going on 100% agree and my heart goes out to ever person that is affected by what's going on
There is nothing wrong with what you are doing man. I still don't know how you keep track of all the work you do to put out amazing video's for us. Thank you :)
Hunting that second Victor was pretty impressive. The Narwhal is quite a boat!
Your editing is getting great.
Hey man new viewer I doubt you’ll read this comment since it’s a pretty old video but I’m about half way through the video and I might binge your series. Watched the mighty jingles’ video series on this game years ago and I thought I might look for more. You were the first person who didn’t make a no-commentary series or just wasn’t entertaining. Nice video I will probably stick around a while
Really cool video, thanks for doing this series
Been thinking of picking Cold Waters up and Im very interested in it so far! Looking forward to watching more from you!
Fun stuff!
Sorry to quibble, but you mentioned the "Permit" class was a one off. I think you meant the "Narwhal" class.
Yeah you are correct. Totally slipped up there!
@@Wolfpack345 A real man admits to slip ups! Respect to you, sir!
Never heard of this game. I'll have to check it out.
I love anything you do that's Cold Waters. So incredibly entertaining!
Following this and the USSR campaign side by side is going to be great. Can't wait.
That was some movie-like suspense watching the enemy glide past your bow while you sat screws stopped! Great work, excited for this series!
Good effort my brother! Even better timing!
SO COOL to see another Cold Waters campaign
Been looking forward to yet another series! I love your Cold Waters playlists!
I say this submarine captain is a relative or descendent of Gudgeons skipper
I've been waiting quite a while for a new cold waters series from you. I was really happy to see it in my feed. I also love playing as the USSR, but I fully support the decision and I'm just really happy you're continuing cold waters content regardless.
Been missing your videos. Glad you are back into Cold Waters
Narwhals! Narwhals!
Swimming the ocean!
Causing a commotion!
Because they are so awesome!
Jedi of the sea!
Good job, man! Narwhal does have a super quiet reactor..
I heard so many stories about that plant when I was in prototype; my class JUST missed so many cool things in the Nuclear Navy in general, it seemed.
Hey wolf, in Cold waters there is a proximity detection for all vessels at a point, so it's pointless to not go active on your Torpedo since it's not like real world. Keep up the good work tho it's an awesome series.
Ik think the dot mod disables this funtion. Because irl a vessel, cant hear anything in het baffles unless they have a towed array running
@@Sjef0194517 that's true, although I forgot to mention I didn't played the Dot Mod Cold Waters.
