100% this is a test before we're getting subs ingame (maybe in next update), and I'm all for it. All the mechanic are in place (except the battery life?). They seem pretty much ready.
I hope the devs are thinking about the new gamodes for naval.

Could it work for current naval game modes? I'm not a game designer but it feels like a good counter to big battleships, giving destroyers a role in higher naval tiers. Rock-Paper-Scissors kind of thing.
Awsome video! I hope they will actually add subs, so that war thunder is somewhat enjoyable again. This is also the reason why I started DCS now since war thunder is so unenjoyable right now (I don't think I will ever come back, and if probably only for naval). We dont nessescarily need the battery. This modell has a snorkel. Which basicaly gives the diesel engine a chance to run at periscope depth. (If you loook at the port side of the conning Tower, towars the bow. There it is) battery yeah..in EC if i need to be stealthy for a long time, im curious how they will implement it. Also Oxigen and stuff.
i hope gaijin add anti submarine aircraft or maybe playable small aircraft carrier it will make naval battles look more accurate and fun game
but i think they gonna add bismarck or yamato battleship first

Kinda hope if they do they can go deeper than 60 meters. Depth charges can go pretty deep so I don't see a issue.

Pretty fun event.
Still some improuvment needed, but it was the proof that the WoWS guys traumatised by subs should not worry in Warthunder as Subs don't go Mach 1 underwater or don't have super powers.

This event literally disproven all that nonsense as war thunder subs are no where near joke of wows submarine.
This event of DD vs submarine is more balanced than a year of unbalanced broken battleship gameplay that literally destroyed naval balance from the time of new power patch to gajlin finally trying to balance battleship put together😂
Not sure why people thought it would be like WoWS, but in that game, yeah, it’s just completely invisible unless it is 2 inches from you, travels at about Warp 9, and is just a massive sweat machine.
I honestly thought gaijin was going to f this up somehow, but this looks so awsome and yet balanced. I'm not a naval warfare guy but I will definitely play this if it has its own mode, they nailed every aspect of this.
At first the destroyers had a pretty big advantage. Then people figured out how to aim torpedoes with the periscope and use AA guns.
The subs get their ass completely handed back to them if assuming equal skill levels.
Maybe just a BR issue though.
Be better if the subs had more spawn points and the convoy ships gave points.
@@mavor101no.. it's a spawn point issue.. the subs need more spawn points to be able to move before the destroyers are on top of them... all the spawn points should be open from the start for the subs.
I was a bit sceptical myself. Glad to know I was wrong. I don't know if subs own mode is a good thing. Naval community is too small to be split. They would rather work on general gamemode where all the ships would have a place
I love me some submarines! If anyone is interested in playing more sub games, I recommend the Silent Hunter series. SH3 and SH4 are a bit old, but they can be modded quite extensively. SH3 takes place in the Atlantic and you play as the Germans, but SH4 takes place in the pacific and you play as the US.
SH3 is a masterpiece
On another note, if any of yall wanna watch more sub games, there's a youtuber named Wolfpack345 that does awesome cinemtography, storytelling (especially on SH series,) and gameplay

nah, sonar sound is just bad, depth charges also sound off, hull creaking sound just like when I take uber and guy accelerates in his prius a bit faster than usual

It's a cool event, but there are some details that could have make this incredible:
1º The torpedoes, the real range of these torpedoes was between 2500 and 5000 meters, not the 2000 meters they have in the event
2º The maximum depth was 250 meters deep and you could even dive deeper. In War Thunder, if you go beyond 55-60 meters, the hull implodes.
3º The hydrophones on the destroyers did not function correctly, in WW2, they had to reduce speed to be effective in detecting submarines because otherwise the noise of the destroyer's own engines prevented it from hearing what was under the surface and therefore It was impossible to detect submarines, in this event you can go at full speed and still detect them. On the submarine side, they could have given greater importance to the use of the hydrophone and would have to limit the information on the enemy's position, the eyes of the submarine under the surface is the hydrophone, it is what allows it to locate targets
4º The spawns for submarines are poorly placed, they would have to be invisible to the destroyers and there would have to be several around the convoy for two reasons: the first is that in real life one does not know where a submarine can come from, it can come from any angle of the convoy; and the second reason is so that the destroyers do not rush the spawns, the point of them being convoy escorts is so that they protect the convoy, not so that they forget about it and run like crazy for submarines, they have to stay with the convoy
5º The frontal depth charge launchers of the USS Fletcher and the USS Tacoma lack a reticle to know where they are going to fall. We have reticles and indicators for torpedoes and bombs on destroyers, submarines and seaplanes, but not for this launcher. there is nothing.
6º This may already be giving the submarines a lot of advantage but it would be cool to give the submarines decoys to give the destroyers the slip
These are some personal considerations based on historical facts and analysis of what I have experienced playing the event, it is a great event but it is not perfect. But it is an event that promises for the future of naval battles

Those depth charges are insane right now. That's exactly why we need to go as deep as possible. And there probably should be less noise coming from big depths. So, yeah
It's just a test lol, gaijin needs to force some engagements first to see results
i hope the restrictions are only for this event, as it's goal is to enforce a known confrontation between subs and frigates (could be frustrating for the frigates to get sniped from 5km away). if they lift those after the event, it's going to be a treat

You forgot some stuff like subs having realistic movement while destroyers have arcade movement
I have never been enthusiastic about naval battles in WT, but now I think it has potential, espacially after adding submarines
I personally have had a bit of a soft spot for it over wows gameplay but man the atmosphere here was fire, especially from the planes view.
Gotta say, I usually really couldn't care less about the events, but the atmosphere and the overall feel of this one got me hooked. You just blast some "Wolfpack" (sabaton) and you really feel like ur raiding allied convoys. Truly the dark souls of event game modes.
The weather and music really add to the event's atmosphere.

dark souls indeed, its so hard when youre trying to hide or fight with 4 destroyers on top of you but when you manage to survive and spit in their face its so satisfying, if we dont get uboats permanently ill be sad and feel teased

I am not a fan of naval battles, but I must admit that the use of submarines adds a fresh new dynamic for those who enjoy this mode, more vehicles will always be an improvement to the gameplay in any mode.
They are noticing that nobody in the entire world cares bout Naval battles because they are bland, having submarines brings in a whole another community and type of vehichle to change gameplay as a whole

I love the sound and everything, this seems a little horror too. Imagine being a guy working on a submarine and hearing all types of explosions and 808 sounds. It's really immersive and fashinating

For the bombers vs the subs, I think having a timed delay on the bombs would work well, that way they act kind of like a depth charge and go into the water a little before exploding

Yeah an 8 sec fuse on the 500s works wonders for their effectiveness
@@DOLLARplays Also a single 500 can destroy a sub so a single plane can destroy 4 subs easily and I got into a dogfight against a HE-111 afterwards. Will make ship launched planes even more useful to find subs for destroyers and light cruisers.
@@aegeanharrier6648 While they are at it, give them aerial depth charges. I know at least the Kingfisher can carry those.
i hope we get the submarines soon, you can tell the event is just a test to see how balanced they are as if you look in the keybinds the subs have controls for things we don't even have access to in the event

my issue is Surfice vessals aren't effected by thier own noise so going full throttle makes no diffrence to detection strength

Submarines: you love to see it. Just wish they actually went to depth and had the proper torpedo range, but otherwise, a good addition. Also, the “this is not a drill” with the picture of the drill have me a good laugh
As always, you make anything look fun and I appreciate you taking on the challenge to figure it out.
Some details like longer torpedo ranges and speed mattering surface vessel sonar accuracy and detection ability, this looks like a fun game mode.

There's room for improvement, something things are off because they wanted to test the engagement, but it's a good starting point for subs
This is looking really promising and full of potential. Few problems tho, but hopefully nothing that can't be eventually sorted out in the future.
Firstly, the last time crush depth was 60 meters was pre WW1. For many WW2 submarines, 180 M was good enough to sit at; 3 times the depth currently available rn.
Secondly, the underwater graphics for the sub are okay, but in reality even underwater, looking straight down would still reveal blue, albiet a darker blue than horizontally towards you. This is the main problem I have with this subject but there are other minor visual things unimportant enough to mention.
Thirdly, mines shouldn't be used up close and offensively like that. If anything, you should be able to use depth as your defense.
Finally, the whole detecting system seems pretty good, however, there should be a difference between sonar, and hydro. The difference irl is sonar creates soundwaves to deflect and detect underwater signatures. Hydro simply detects the sounds made by objects. This is active and passive respectively.
Going off of the last idea, the submarine noise system seems really good. However, it should really be that the faster the destroyer goes, the further its hydro detection is decreased. Cold waters makes an excellent example of this since when you move through water, the noise it creates can mask other sounds.
There's like a hundred other things I can say about it, but these are the major things lol.

I think we have limited depth just for the event to test fight. With deeper depth we should get battery life, and maybe oxygen levels, so you would have to resurface once a while. Even on the stat card says 250m max depth.
There are some issues, but it's a good starting point
@@DOLLARplays I mean if we're sticking with WT realism, oxygen would last on subs for at least half a day. Battery is a different story depending on speed, so if anything I would have that be affected, but still have it last awhile before needing recharging.
I believe by far the most restrictive part of submarines, is the amount of torpedoes that can be carried.
A little to easy to spot te sub in my opinion. I mean, technically there was a dead zone in the sonar right below the destroyer, subs used to sneak under them with this method

Type VII imploding at 70 meters, while they could comfortably stay at 170 meters and more irl lul
Well, lets stay with 90 meters then. Then im fine with that honestly. Maybe upgrading the pressure hull could give you 90, before that its 60 max. Im good with that.

Been doing the challenges for the sub event right now and I absolutely love it! I really hope they bring in subs sometime soon. I usually hate tf out of naval like most players do, but this event has only made me want to play more. Gaijin actually made a fun naval gamemode for once... I just hope that if they do bring in subs, we can get some cool pin-ups we can slap on subs. Most notably a pin-up from Das Boot or Greyhound.

I think that this sub event is real cool but only thing that as a UBOAT player is off too me is that your always in sonar so the destroyer always knows where you are and that they don't have a rough position of you with the ship's hydrophone and sonar is than a ability so you can spot the exact position of the U-Boot but anything else is very nice
i agree with some simple tweaks and balances they could have an amazing convoy game mode, it has so much potential

Sub event is super cool. Very balanced and engaging. I think subs in EC would be fun. Hope they add other nations like the French Sercof. I forget how it’s spell lol

I love the asymmetrical game mode. Really hope they look to add that to other game types. And i think they did a great job with balance. Destroyers are definitely easier to play, with subs having a higher skill ceiling, but if you can play them well the subs are deadly. I found that techniques from more sub centric games like cold waters actually helped, which is a good sign, and it really have some of the atmosphere battlestations used to have.
Overall I think a decent job from the devs and hope they keep up the good work.

Fun tip, is you can set a 1.5 second delay on bombs so they sink and hit submerged subs. Use smoke to block line of sight for subs and mark hidden subs for your aircover.
This has been one of the most fun events I have done in a while, really reminds me of the 2020 Greyhound movie about a destroyer protecting a convoy crossing the Atlantic.

The first time I used the submarines, I didn't know how to use the periscope, but I didn't feel like looking either. I only played it briefly to test it. I'm not a fan of ship combat in War Thunder. I went underwater in the submarine and got into the formation of cargo ships and then used the map and looked through the surface of the water. I then fired volleys of torpedoes and was able to destroy 3 ships with the first volley. But submarine hunting is also fun. The Catalina flying boats are very maneuverable and the bombs almost always cause fatal damage to submarines. The anti-aircraft guns from the escort ships are very dangerous for aircraft.
Great job covering the event, Dollarplays. The only thing NOT covered was HE111 bomber and Tacoma.
Those Fletchers will shoot you down fast. And stear clear of the Tacoma; its bad.
Subs actually made me reinstall the game and play a couple rounds after several years of not playing. I liked it and will definitely play a bit or maybe a lot once they are released!

if i see this correctly and from what i experienced. the gamemode was played in arcade. so if we get an sonar dish for the DDs in RB this may well and truely be a good addition.

the fear and silence you can feel when 30m down and a dd runs over you dropping depth charges nearly missing you is amazing.

I like the G7e with only 2km range and a trail behind, and the type 7 sub with a crush depth of 60 m, and the torp can only have the boat course angle

i'm really pleased not only with the sub event, but also with the large scale naval/aviation event. It would make frigates more relevant to naval battles and bring a whole lot more to naval if they keep both of these

I definitely feel that this is gaijin testing the waters one more time before the release of subs. Because a lot of my early tier ships have depth charges and i never understood the point to them without subs being in game
