    Ironwill has never let me down! I’m 46 years old been bow hunting since I was 15. Shot sooo many heads expandable and fixed! Will Never shoot an expandable again! To me it’s all about shot placement but for times that shot isn’t perfect I want penetration no matter what I hit and broad head to stay intact!

    Decent review young man. You under estimate iron will. It's designed for lower poundage bows...and penetration is greater. It's blades are some of best steel made. Ever deer I've shot in last 2 years...went 20yrds and tipped over. 100W vented. Less moving parts.
    Congrats on up and coming baby!

    Mahalos for the upload. Appreciate you sharing and field testing these broadheads. I've been very successful with SEVRs 1.5 and 2.0s here in Hawai'i, hunting wild hogs and Axis deer. And can't go wrong with the OG Montecs lol. Also, Axis deer here on the islands don't bleed much unless you get em good in the pumphouse. Some of the locals mentioned it also depends on their location whether or not it's in the drylands or wetter parts of the island. Could be something with their hydration... Solid upload and Godspeed!

    Good Stuff. I love the Exodus. The Method/Contact MD3 is another great 3 blade head. I like the Grim Reaper 4 blades (Micro and regular Hades if you want more cut). I had good luck with a Grim Reaper 3 blade Pro mech two years ago and a Deadmeat V2 this year, as well as the Trifecta single bevel. If you haven't tried the Trifecta single bevels you need to! They fly awesome and rotate like crazy inside the animal. I heart shot a doe with the 125 grain solid and it rotated 90 degrees from one side of the heart to the other.

    I enjoy all archery programs. When it comes to broadheads I stick with a heavy ,very sharp tunable system. Here in WI the small bucks are still pretty stout. And if you do not get a pass through I call that a failure. The best part of a pass through is the ability to study the blood etc. on the arrow and then determine “quality of shot”. Personally I would never use a mechanical in my vertical bow but…. I have tremendous success with the swhackers though my Ravin X-bows.

    G5 Deadmeat V2 was my go to this season. Smaller cut (1.5”) than Megameat (2”) which makes for thicker blades. Buried one into a does shoulder and it lodged in her back shoulder. No bent blades. Great blood trail. Got a clean pass and great blood trail on a second doe.

    Hit a nice buck at 32 yards today with the SEVR Hybrid…… complete pass through; huge wound channel and tons of blood. Buck went about 40 yards and crashed. I just wish they would make the 1.75 in the hybrid because it’s an amazing broadhead also!!

    • @daltonbbf756
      @daltonbbf756 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@johnmccord4872there’s so much to it. Is your bow tuned and not just paper tuned Broadhead tuned to you shot by you. You’ll lose a ton or energy to an arrow not flying straight. Did the deer dip and roll that also cost energy by transferring it into a different plan. Lastly shoulder is a very vague term. Shoulder blade isn’t anything to get through it’s super thin and easy to penetrate but there’s a ridge on it that’s definitely a lot tougher. Now humorous the big heavy bone in the shoulder area that connects to the elbow I don’t think a mech on the market is going through that unless you run 80 plus pounds a heavy arrow setup then still definitely don’t want to try it.

    I had the first one I used hault on opening and do next to no damage. After looking at the arrow I realized why. The blades rely on a spring and they sit in a channel that if the blade bends causes them to bind. It was cold and raining and I saw the blade was gummed by fat and hide. Most mechanicals rely on the energy from the bow to the arrow to open. These rely on a spring that is a fail point. So just keep that in mind that maybe even if they are dirty or you tweak a blade or your clip a bone there is a chance they will not open as they should because they have a fixed amount of energy by design to open unlike say the reapers and rages I’ve shot where as the arrow passes it will continue to push the blades open.

      Back years ago, late 80's, long before Facebook and Myspace. There was a bowhunting forum on a retailer site called Bowhunters warehouse. Back then you didn't have 1,500 bow hunting groups, everyone was on Bowhunters warehouse forums. There was this one guy that did some digging and figure out almost every broadhead in the US back then was getting their blades from one of 2 sources. One was thick and tough, but not very sharp. One was thin and razor sharp, but not very tough..... Soooooo He contacted a german razor blade manufacturer and had some blades custom built to a thicker gauge, but sharp.... He was doing his best to sell them to all the guys in BW forums out of his garage and get a start in his new business. I got one of the first 100 he ordered. Probably one of the first 50.... I've been using those Slick Tricks since then and never had a complaint. He passed away a few years back and I decided to, after 35 years try something else. A friend of mine that owns an Archery show talked me into trying QAD Exodus heads on hogs... "Just try them on the pigs and you'll see".... Still using them.... One thing I can tell you, you'll never see a mechanical in my quiver. Seen too many fail over the years. I pull 74 lbs and could care less about bone. I'll shoot right through a shoulder bone in a heartbeat. On a Whitetail anyway.....

    Tuff head 3 blade has been on my eye, I currently shoot a single bevel from them, literally will pass through anything lol but the blood trails are lacking a bit, the S7 tool steel that these tuffhead broadheads are made of in a material science standpoint are probably the hardest metals you can mill a broadhead into, just have to swallow the price lol

    Not having the ability to shatter bone (like a single bevel fixed blade) instead going around a bone by having the blades turn reduces inertia and changes the intended path of the arrow. All of these are the opposite of what you want to happen which is why I no longer use expandable broadheads for anything but small game.

      Shot a doe yesterday with a sevr 2.0 robusto, shattered a rib bone in half and still full pass through buried deep in the dirt. Deer walked 20 yards and fell over. This is the first deer I’ve shot with a mechanical but I like what I saw. 570gr arrow. 18%FOC

    • @frankbrowning328
      @frankbrowning328 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@4TheBroKen If people insist on a mechanical the Sever is one of the best. However, it is possible, and over time likely, that those blades will tilt to one side or the other to go around bone. When that happens the path of the arrow becomes unpredictable and for me that's not acceptable. I've shot a ton of different types and brands of expendables in the past and when they work, they work extremely well but when they fail it isn't fair to the animal. If they could get an expandable to 100% lock in the open position and Not Have the Ability Tilt At All I'd go back to them immediately as they make a larger cut. However, until that day I'll shoot fixed blades like the QAD Exodus and the Slick Tricks. They are super tough and leave a big hole on both sides to bleed out of

    Ok so I have two stories. One is about my first muley and the second is about a follow up shot on my hunting partners first animal, a 6 point bull elk.
    The mule deer was a bit of a rodeo but it worked out. The set up was a Mathews vertix, 26.5" draw, 70#, 440 grain arrow, and a grim reaper fatal steel. The arrow entered right in front of the right rear quarter and exited in the pocket just above the elbow on the off side. I don't think there was a vital organ I didn't hit. Excellent internal wounding and exit wound. The part I thought was the craziest was that I shot him at 64 yards hard quartering away!
    The elk I helped kill was a follow up shot at 70 yards. The set up was a bowtech reckoning 35, 27" draw, 70#, 425 grain arrow, grim reaper micro Hades 3 blade. The bull was slightly quartering to me, but I didn't know that because most of his body was behind some brush. But I got a good view of his head, neck, shoulder, and behind shoulder. I just put my pin on the 10 ring and rolled through my hinge. I watched my arrow arc up and land right behind the pin. He ran another 20 or so yards and piled up. Turned out I shot him in the 10 ring and it exited mid body. Very small entrance and exit wound. My arrow stuck out about 6" on the off side.
    According to the ranch fairy croud I shouldn't have gotten the arrow performance I did... But I did. I think arrow flight and shot placement plays a huge part in lethality.
    I'm starting to develop the opinion of running a two broadhead system. Pick the mechanicals that perform well as mechs and fixed blades that perform well as a fixed blade. Broadheads like the grim reaper pro series mechanical, sevr hybrid, or evolution outdoors Hyde would be my top picks for a mechanical. I'd go with a qad exodus or grim reaper Hades 1 3/16" cut for a fixed.

    I had bought the Iron WIll single bevel 150 at the end of last season with super high hopes. They felt great out of the box, shot great, was able to sharpen the one I used for practice, I even missed the target once and hit a rock and it stayed perfectly in tact. So far this year I have shot 3 deer with them. Two of the deer were perfect heart shots within 20 yards, these two died within 40 yards. The third one was a little further, roughly 25 yards, double lunged it. This one made it about 95-100 yards before falling over and dying. All three were what I'd call good shots, however when I say there was no blood, I mean there was literally not a single of drop blood from any of those deer up until about a yard or two from where they fell over. This made tracking that double lung deer very difficult. All three were recovered but some blood would've been nice.
    Before using the Iron Will, I was using Grim Reaper 4 blade. Always had great blood every time, deer always died quick, they fly great. I'll be switching back to the Grim Reaper for the remainder of my season.
    I'm not saying to not buy Iron Will, they're a great head, but for me they just don't meet my needs.

      Weird. I’ve had the opposite experience as far as blood trailing with iron wills. I’ve always been impressed with the blood I get from them with how small the broad head diameter is relative to expandables. Do you normally hunt from the ground or from a stand? If you’re hunting from the ground and both entry and exit channels are higher up then you won’t get much blood since the chest cavity will have to fill all the way up to one of those openings.

    In my state, the blades on a mechanical broadhead must pivot forward and cannot lock in place, to be legal. So rear deploying mechanicals are out for me.

  • @sunflower739375
    @sunflower739375 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The best broadhead would be a proprely placed one that is extremely sharp and will not fail. To improve your ability with tracking would be much more advantageous than have to rely on a broadhead that like it or not can fail or it may make you a better bowhunter not to force a shot. I have shot deer with both and will never shoot a mechanical broadhead again .

      Shouldn't shoot any broadhead in any shoulder. especially an elk shoulder. Shoulder knuckle stops bullets. Why do people try putting arrows through shoulders? All because of ranch fairy 🧚‍♂️ and the lies of foc. Being told for compounds. Ashby theory was meant for recurve bows etc...

    For those of you listening to this, I wouldn't ever shoot a 100 gr expanding head anymore. When you have a good shot right down main street they are the best, but I lost the biggest buck of my life about 4 years ago I hit him in the front shoulder and my arrow almost bounced off, I'm shooting 70 lbs at 9 yards with 375 gr arrow. Now I'm shooting 505 gr arrow with 200 gr single bevel and blowing through both shoulders coming out into the dirt it's crazy. Don't think about the good shot placement think about when the deer spins and you only have a front shoulder shot and you have to get atleast 6 in penatration to get to heart. It's important guys.

    From the shots you are taking, it sounds like you are still finding your limits to hit the vitals correctly. When we did not have limits on deer I was shooting a 115gr muzzy with only one blade because of cost and ease of sharpening. We killed LOTs of deer a season. I find a properly place two blade with 1-18" is all you need. I also used Magnus two blade they shot fine but the tip would bend if too pointed so learned to file it down. I believe you problem is not broadhead selection but shot selection, Learn to pass on low probability shots put the arrow thru both lungs. I would suggest for you to try the small diameter expandable like wasp jak hammer with 1-1/2" or less cutting diameter grim reaper mini is another suggestion.

    I tested the Sevr hybrid this year and so far am not impressed. I feel like the pivoting blades cause less than optimal wound channels. If one of the blades pivots over on entrance, lung tissue doesn't pose enough resistance to push the blade back out to full cutting diameter. The wound channel I'm getting through lungs isn't very impressive and the blood trail hasn't been that good either. I've had much better blood with the QAD. I've recently started using a head by Black Flag Archery called the Hemorrhage. I chose the 125g XL model. So far great penetration and fantastic (very short) blood trails.

The newer companies are coming up with brilliant ideas using very modern tech and materials.

      @scottcrawford3745 Per chatgpt 4o.
      As of 2024, some of the most popular fixed blade broadheads include the NAP Thunderhead, Muzzy 4 Blade, and the G5 Montec. The NAP Thunderhead has been a longstanding favorite due to its sharpness and reliability, making it a go-to for many hunters. The Muzzy 4 Blade is another well-trusted option, known for its true flight and affordability. Additionally, the G5 Montec stands out for its solid one-piece construction, offering durability and ease of use.
      The SIK F4 is also gaining popularity for its remarkable accuracy and field-point-like performance.
