I can tell you myself and a couple of my buddies started using the sevr the last couple years and we’ve had incredible results! All have locked open and love we can actually practice with them so we know exactly how they fly! All have locked opted and worked flawlessly! I will be using strictly them until I/we have them fail in some sort of way!
The problem im having off the bat is youre basing a lot of the cutting edge versus the actual wound channel size. For example, if an expandable is using two inch and a half blades, thats not making a 3 inch cut because the geometry of those swept back blades means the wound channel has to be smaller. Thats why nc hypodermic rage broadheads are only advertised as 2 inch cuts. Thats the actual cut diameter despite the total amlunt of exposed edge being more than 2 inches.
I understand. For me it’s a way to objectively metric these heads. I believe that my calculation illustrates which head is marginally better than another because on the surface…they all seem pretty good but the metric can’t just be penetration. In a more recent video, I compare the Beast to the Sevr. Both are advertised as having 2 inch blades. The calculation I use there also includes the inches from tip to tip…this accounts for the degree with which the blades sweep back. You can find it below. All that said, I appreciate your feedback and support. Best of luck this season! th-cam.com/video/repujC5TxFc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zl8p_-i-4_W4khc0
I think if you use the actual ratio of comparison of two number and divide the cutting surface number by the penetration, then multiply by 100 you could use you data to equate the expected momentum loss during penetration of your test medium. Here are the numbers I came up with: Dead meat: 16% Whitetail special: 13.6% Sevr 2.0: 9.18% Sevr 1.75: 6.6% Rage Hypo: 10.4% Mega Meat: 17% I’m actually going to figure a way to put this into my penetration calculator I’ve been working on. Thanks for the idea. Great work on the video.
How did the mega meat beat the dead meat? I purchased Dead meat for an Elk hunt this year thinking best bloodtrail, penetration and cutting diameter (3 blade) compared to all the heads you tested! Never shot the Mega or Deadmeat but have shot Grim Reaper, Rage, Killzone, slick trick viper tricks and many more with luck for Whitetails…. 62lb Bowtech solution 29.5 inch draw and Bowtech Carbon One 72 lb with 446 Grain Easton 6.5 Matrix 300 spine.
It’s a great question because the deadmeat has a smaller cut diameter…one would think that the deadmeat would have greater penetration. But, the Megameat fully deployed and went 20 plus inches…very surprising. I will say that all of this is simply one data point. I would recommend using what you feel most confident in based on your own examination. Thanks for your feedback and support. Best of luck this season.
Tru glo titanium x broadheads are the most consistent flying and most durable broadhead I have hunted and killed many wall hangers with. Using high speed xbows over 430 fps. I can also say I have used all these broadheads at one time or another and all have had broken blades after pass thru. I am shooting a tenpoint nitro 505 shooting 505 grain arrow at 380 fps and the tru glo shines out to 60.
Your testing raises a question, how are you getting so much penetration? Every ballistics test on YT i have seen- no one gets that much penetration. Your arrows weigh more than the typical guys we see on YT. Generally the Gel creates alot of friction/stiction on the arrow and no one gets that much penetration. Not a knock on you or your test- just wondering what is different here..
Good question. I’m shooting into a relatively small area of ballistic gel. And as a result, I’m shooting from about 10 yards. That’s likely the difference. If I were to stretch that out to 20 or 30 yards, I’d likely hit an edge or maybe miss completely…or have the arrows angle outside of the gel. That’s why I’m so close. I understand that most shots are longer than 10 yards. But, my objective is to evaluate these arrows against each other…whether that is 30 yards or 10 yards…doesn’t make a whole lot of difference. Thanks for the question and your support. Best of luck this season!
Curious about the Grim Reaper. I’ve always been told they are designed to close after penetration. How did you confirm the one blade did not open during penetration?
I thinknwhat he meant was they will sometimes close upon exit. It is not uncommon for you to find the head closed, although it fully opened while passing through. Are you sure it didn't close one after?
It was a judgement call. I penalized for only having 2 blades open with a lower ranking…but I realize that all 3 blades may open most of the time…therefore, I gave it a full WCR score based on 3 blades. I don’t disagree with you though…just want to try to be fair.
Well, it’s a great equalizer with these broadheads. Of course ballistic gel isn’t the same as the flesh of a big game animal…but it allows for one to see how these heads might perform. Best of luck this season!
The blades are 1.25 inches. They advertise a 2 inch cut…which is true as a whole…but each blade is not 2 inches. What’s interesting is that several heads are advertising 2 inch cuts but it means different things to different manufacturers…this can be confusing to the consumer.
@@HuntDetail I've used Mega Meats with great effectiveness. With vertical and crossbow. It matters not end result is the same, total devastation. Massive but short blood trails. It's one of the few mechanicals I've killed with. I thought I'd try them because I generally like G5 products, they haven't disappointed. I tend to be a fixed blade kind of guy, but the number of mechanicals I'd be willing to try is growing. Many years ago I'd never ever consider a mechanical. You wouldn't catch me with one in my quiver. Now, no problem they've come a long way. I'd even consider checking out some hybrids. Good luck afield with what ever you choose and happy hunting!
@@HuntDetail I will also add, their not the most durable head as far as blades go. I've had them bend, but not sure if it was do to the hit or the ground on pass-through. With the large unsupported blades it could present a problem. As you know for all out durability you can't beat a fixed blade.
I killed two does with one shot with the megameat. 73 lbs 27.5" dl 420 grain arrow. Penetrates extremely well with my setup
I love G5 broadheads, however this year I am going with a B3 2 blade exo 125g.
I also got a three pack for $20 so if they break oh well.
Reapers all day!! I love them . I’ve never had an issue with them. Wts and carnifour are both absolutely devastating.
Thanks for the feedback and support. Best of luck this season!

Yes, there are a million ways to create data for these beyond penetration. Glad you like the video. Best of luck this season!
@@HuntDetail I based mine off of an army research project for penetrating armor, it’s not perfect but it has some predictive capability.

Shoot the SEVR 1.75 or 2.0 and you will never shoot another BROADHEAD! Blades are very sharp and more durable than anything tested!
The User is the most issue with any of these heads .I have never lost any deer with the Reapers.Always check the blades and mechanics before using
For sure, but I would say that mechanicals have definitely evolved and are more efficient that in prior years.
Best of luck this season!
You should test the REK HXP!
Interesting. I just looked them up. Good to know. Thanks
@@HuntDetail Their XP is also really good. Its a 1.75" cut and the HXP is their 2inch cut.

Curious about the Grim Reaper. I’ve always been told they are designed to close after penetration. How did you confirm the one blade did not open during penetration?
The Grim Reaper had 1 blade still closed. It’s a forward opening head and 1 blade simply stayed shut. Still a solid head I’m sure.
I thinknwhat he meant was they will sometimes close upon exit. It is not uncommon for you to find the head closed, although it fully opened while passing through. Are you sure it didn't close one after?
I’m pretty sure that the one blade remained closed unfortunately.
The Grim Reaper only had 2 blades open sp wouldnt you need to base your wound channel performance in this case off the 2 blades, not 3?

I have had good luck wt the Rage hypodermic no collar. Out of my Mathews V3X 29.
That’s great to hear! Best of luck this season!
