    Considering the implied rape connotations with the hunter, it makes the wolf's design all the more gross and horrifying. Symbolically, his long neck and head being located down from his body might represent something more phallic. Combined with the QR code message saying "why am I bleeding down there?", it makes the "eaten" aspect of the creature Blanchette encounters more clearer in context. The wolf's design might actually be how the mycelium network, and by extension the doll, sees the hunter, a phallic monster that "eats" his victims. I never thought I see the day that a Little Red Riding Hood adaptation dipped into symbolism straight out of Silent Hill.

    Also, I agree with you saying that the best ending is the main character and her grandmother becoming a part of the fungus. Especially if the other outcomes of the story doesn't end the best for the main character.

      There is just not enough fungi based horror! The imagery is just so perfect! I know of like three or four horror books with fungi as the focus and that's it! If anyone has any book recs or anything with fungi horror please reply! I am currently reading Annihilation, and I have read Mexican Gothic as well. I know there's a retelling of the house of usher but with fungi zombies I've read too. Also the book about the girls school and they're stuck on that island with an infection or outbreak spreading.

    A thought just struck me, if your theory about the hunter actually being the wolf raping and killing the main character before throwing her down the well. Then maybe the doll and the consensus that is connected to the mushroom infection is possibly the hunter's original victim? I say this because if you really think about it, it does seem to make sense. Especially if what ever it is that caused the infection in the first place wants the main character's body as a host and how in the fourth and final ending where if the main character eats the mushrooms, she sees that mess of flesh and bones mentioning how the wolf eat it and threw it down the well or something like that.

    • @VirtualResidence
      @VirtualResidence  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

      It very well could be multiple victims in the well and its becoming a collective consciousness... FREAKY...

  • @SpecialInterestShow
    @SpecialInterestShow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

    Oh I see... The girl under the well is a prior victim, and her rotting body is reaching out spreading her consciousness through the mushrooms! The infection of the grandmother is simply her trying to escape her trapped fate :(
    Also BTW the Hunter/Wolf I believe is stalking us through the forest.
    This is because if you pay close attention at 11:05 when VR is moving to the next area, the transition doesn't happen immediately. Instead, the shot lingers for a split second longer, and we see a tall lanky dark figure rush after the protagonist!!!
    Whilst this could be the Well Girl, I think the size, shape, and quickness of the body as well as the lack of apparent mushrooms on it clearly implies that it's the Hunter stalking her through the forest!!!

    Well, I must say I'm shocked about this "mucorales"'s finale, but it actually follows the original story in an accurate way.
    The whole story of Little Redhood is about a girl going through puberty and leaving home to explore the outside world.
    Yes, the reason she has a red hood is to simbolyze her having her first period. When I first read the message in game "why am I bleeding down there?" I thought it could refer to that, and it probably does.
    In fairytales forests are always associated with life outside the house and, as such, they also have dangerous people in it.
    The wolf is supposed to represent the people that want to harm you and hurt you.
    Fairytales have always been used on a pedagogical level to subconsciously teach kids about the dangers of life.
    "Dont trust the wolf in the forest" is "Dont trust strangers when you go outside"
    The hunter in the original story is actually the savior who, we can say, "punishes" the wolf for trying to take advantage of Little Redhood.
    However many horror retelligs potray him as the actual wolf. Its another way of interpreting the story and a way of saying "anyone could hurt you" (little pessimistic, but oke-), so I understand why some creators do that.
    The role of the grandma is supposed to be a representation of the girl reaching full maturity and, I think, becoming a mom herself. When in the original the wolf tricks Little Redhood and takes the grandma's place, he's preventing her from becoming a mature adult with agency.
    With the fungus storyline here, however, I'm not sure if that's supposed to underline this idea. But considering that the mushrooms come from the well where a wolf's victim is held in, it could be seen as a way of "the outside world" to protect the girl from the trauma.
    Overall, this was a great analysis of the game! I never actually saw the ending 4 so it was kind of a deep shock for me, but I can see the developer's reasonings for doing this.
    I just feel bad for the og hunter. All dude did was save the girl and grandma and everyone went "what if YOU are the actual villain!?"
    EDIT: after watching this I was a bit distressed and decided to read a book about therapy I bought. Started a chapter, and it was about s****l assault and the main parallel is with Little Redhood. I’m officially done like WHAT 🥲

      When coincidence becomes scary

  • @SpecialInterestShow
    @SpecialInterestShow 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

    Something about the Hunter unfortunately made me nervous even before the deep dive. Mainly, it's some random man she doesn't know and has never seen before... And yet he suddenly knows what's happening and comes to get her from her front door, instead of reaching out and contacting authorities to deal with the situation? Something about it just made me so nervous.
    Then when the "why am I bleeding down there?" hit, I didn't realize it may have applied to the little girl specifically, but I immediately did go "oh. Oh no. He r'ped the doll girl"
    I still don't know if I'd say that the main character IS the doll or if the doll was a prior victim, but regardless, clearly the Hunter isn't actually a good guy... What a tragic tale. Between the "wolf" and the mushrooms...
    It makes me wonder if he has something to do with the mushrooms too, or if the mushrooms represent something symbolically?

  • @luxaskie492
    @luxaskie492 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    I immediately knew that the hunter was someone to be afraid of, and I was genuinely surprised when the last ending didn't immediately include something obvious. I kind of sat there and wondered if that simplicity was just a false. The worst part about it is that he knew where she was staying, which meant that he had followed her back at some point. Yes, he had been stalking her through the woods, but it hadn't been some impulse decision. He had at least one victim before her. He knew what he was doing, and he clearly had no remorse for his actions.
    I think what is just as scary is to know that no matter how you play, she will never return home. I think it's a nice metaphor for growing up, even if said metaphor hurts to acknowledge. The other theme of being so young and being so helpless is also very hard to accept. In that situation, the one adult she knows is too sick to help her, the other victim is too trapped to save her, and her perpetrator is someone she would immediately trust because she is a child. She is a child, and even if she wasn't, the weight of that situation is too much.
    A part of me wonders if the grandmother and the doll are more connected than we first think. Is it fair to say that maybe the doll is a representation of the grandmother's assault, and the metaphor of mushrooms is her instilling a sense of fear and defensive isolation into the girl? It feels like a stretch, but in a game of metaphors and meanings, I'm trying to bridge the gaps.
    The feeling of disassociation in the first part of the game, then the slow crawl of realization, instilling this sense of connection... Maybe the metaphor of mushrooms to the grandmother is something like substance abuse? She's sick, she's dying to something, and that something is only pulling her further in. The doll may represent her past self, and the mushrooms may be connected to the doll to symbolize where and why the grandmother is sick. That younger self is suffering. Something is growing from her, and it's only infecting her future self and those around her.
    Again, this is just a theory, but there has to be more to the grandmother than we think. Whether she scares the little girl into hiding or she herself becomes an abuser, I know she's more than a bedridden old lady. There's intention there.

    Ooooo and if you think about it, the grandma didn't seem to feel any pain as her own body mutated due to the mushrooms. And you're right, Blanchette seemed perfectly happy to accept the mushrooms sewn into her skin and felt no pain.
    Honestly, when you put it the way you did - that the "death" of Blanchette and her grandma may not actually be death but rather their consciousnesses simply changing form. Changing into the same type of consciousness that the girl in the well possesses. The question of whether this will lead to separate consciousnesses in a network or lead to a sort of hive mind merge between the three characters, or a mix of the two (individuals but with access to a hivemind/telepathy type thing), is yet to be seen
    But to me it seems like all they need is some new bodies and they'd be set... Albeit, they're gonna need to get better at not uh, mutating the bodies so much if they ever wanna leave the forest.
    ... I vote grandma kills the hunter and takes his body. That is unless it means he'd join the network too in which case they should just kill and not take him over
    After all, with grandma, Blanchette, and the well girl, it's now 3 eldritch mushroom creatures against 1 eldritch wolf fellow

    How did you get the forest to glitch out? Does the whole game end up looking like that once you get that 4th ending and try another cycle?

    I see why you think the mushroom ending is the lesser of several evils but im just kinda stuck on how in every scenario, someone is trying to use Blanchette for her body, both the initial abuser and his victim(s) in a seemingly unending cycle.

    I'm unclear on what part of this is analog

    • @VirtualResidence
      @VirtualResidence  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Analog horror- is described as a subgenre of horror that has a visual style usually with low fidelity graphics trying to replicate analog media or the limitations of it.
      Narrative style usually relies on environmental story telling/ subtext
      Basically analog horror doesn’t have to be the backrooms or vhs style found footage.. it essentially uses analog style media to make the experience creepy.
      So I believe personally that Mucorales qualifies as it.

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090
      @casanovafunkenstein5090 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It isn't, but the reason why someone would refer to it as analogue horror is that the aesthetics of the genre are directly pulled from creepypasta posts, with many projects being direct or indirect adaptations of those forum posts into a new medium.
      Video games were common subject matter for creepypasta stories and because of the age of the people who initially made up those stories, a lot of them took place in, or referenced media from the 90s. This is thought of by the community as "analogue" because it was a transitional period in which the Internet was not really rolled out to the majority of people and pretty much all television broadcasting and home video was still on analogue formats, such as VHS and local television broadcasting, which was far more regional for people who did not have a cable or satellite subscription.
      Back then, there was a reasonable chance that you could have watched a television series that never existed outside of the area you lived in and that was fertile ground for coming up with a series of stories about gruesome things appearing on the news, television shows that nobody has ever heard of, government experiments on isolated communities, and obscure, unfinished or unreleased prototypes of commercial software being obtained from yard sales or car boot sales from shady people selling bootlegs.
      The main thing that distinguishes analogue horror from creepypasta is probably that the people who make it don't try and pretend it's real for the most part and rarely choose to be anonymous.
      This sits in the camp of being the sort of thing that a creepypasta would have been written about, but it's intended to be a standalone experience as opposed to just being a spooky video-game bought from a shady guy at a flea market that made the person who played it so crazy that they joined Something Awful and paid actual money to tell people about it.
      Just be thankful for the fact that it's not a slideshow with photos of people who have weird faces.

    • @VirtualResidence

      Analog horror is any horror that has analogue media aesthetic. I would say this qualifies!

    • @baitposter

      Fair, though I think that aesthetic needs to imply an analog medium, _(such as the ever popular VHS tape recorded from a camcorder, digitized and uploaded to TH-cam as found footage or firsthand vlogging,)_ while this is very generally just a spooky video game.
      Home Safety Hotline is a better example of analog horror in a video game, because its interface is diegetic and masquerading as Windows XP or Windows 98
