Why DISENCHANTMENT Is Disappointing | Cynical Reviews

  • I didn't like Disenchantment. Here's why.
    Disenchantment is an animated comedy series on Netflix and the latest creation of Matt Groening. For all two of you who don’t know, he’s also responsible for The Simpsons and Futurama, two of the most popular and iconic animated shows ever made. So of course, hopes were very high.
    Set in the fantasy kingdom of Dreamland, the show follows the rebellious Princess Bean and her friends as they cause trouble, get up to various escapades, and spend a lot of time getting shitfaced. It sets out to offer a subversive parody of the fantasy genre and a more “mature” form of comedy than any of Groening’s previous creations. Sounds good, right? Well, no. It isn’t. In fact, I found it a massive disappointment.

      You know...I disagree with you on disenchantment. But you stated your grievances with it in a professional and civilized way. So I'm subscribing because you do something I respect in a review. You analyzed and expressed the material and explained why you liked or didn't like it, while not dismissing others who might be of a different opinion. I hope you continue to make videos of this level of quality.

      Old Yeller was shot when he HAD to be.
      The Simpsons are a full-blown bubonic plague!
      They're at least 15 years past freshness and moldy. When they couldn't do funny Treehouse of Horror episodes consistently anymore and The Movie stunk, I knew it was over...
      It's still fun to watch the first 6-8 seasons but the rest afterwards is very forgettable.
      I'm actually glad Futurama was cancelled when it was originally. When they brought it back, it really lost its specialness across the direct-to-video movies and Comedy Central original episodes. The writers changed between cancellation and when it was brought back and that made a HUGE difference. The first 78 episodes of Futurama are rewatchable -- after that, not so much!
      I concede that it could also be that I changed, too, but going back to The Simpsons and re-watching those first six seasons and what happened after Season 7 -- big, big difference. That show was burned out on consistency before they hit Season 10...
      I honestly don't think most shows stay fresh much past Season 4. A good time to end most shows would be after the fifth or sixth season but "successful" shows in first run generally far too long and have crummy series finales.

      Because he's not being an arse about it. Most other cynical reviews of TV series tends to nitpick the hell outta shows and talk in circles for 1 hour for no other reason than to get a rise out of its audience enough to gather up all the clicks.
      The points he made about Disenchantment was spot on, and they weren't nitpicks. I wish people gave Disenchantment a chance or just skip episodes 3-7 and just watch 1-2 and everything after episode 7 because there's something worth watching here. But I also can't fault them for not bothering after the first season was so weak.

      I just realized - Futurama has a definitive trio (Fry, Leela, Bender), Disenchantment has a definitive trio (Bean, Elfo, Luci), but the Simpsons...I don't even know.
      Do we say it has a...quinto? Quintet? Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie? But no that can't be right, because Maggie is hardly present and Marge and Lisa get considerably less focus in the plots and jokes. Is it Homer, Carl, and Lenny? Bart, Lisa, and Millhouse?
      None of it really works because the show is more about a whole family, the dynamics between the family members, and the individual antics of each family member. Futurama and Disenchantment are way more similar to each other than to the Simpsons.

    it seems most people always forget one thing. Matt Groening was the creator of Futurama and the Simpsons.. but HE WASN'T the writer. Most of the succes of those series after many reviews it's mostly thanks to the great writers (at least until season 8/9 in the Simpsons). My point it's that Matt was never knew to be a great writer and this series it's the proof that even Groening, whitout great writers, can only go so far as to a meh...

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      This seems to be a recurring thing nowadays: the creator of the series has a strong team and together they make something great. Then, time for a prequel or sequel or spiritual successor, the creator has to also do the writing, and it is not nearly as good:
      Star Wars: George Lucas had a whole team for the OT -> Had only yes-men for the Prequel Trilogy.
      Avatar: The Last Airbender: Mike and Bryan were the creators, Aaron Ehasz was lead writer -> Legend of Korra: No Ehasz, Mike and Bryan create and write.
      Kingdom Hearts: Nomura is director, Nojima is lead writer -> Kingdom Hearts 3: Nojima is busy writing the final fantasy remake, so Nomura has to direct and write.

    Just my 2 cents on the racist antelope. Earlier in the episode there's a sign in the background that said something along the lines of "Beware of racist antelope" which, when I saw it, thought it was just a random sign that wasn't going anywhere. But then when the antelope DID show up it was a nice unexpected pay off.
    EDIT: I guess some people think the sign by itself would have been good enough. Humor's subjective of course, but as for myself, if it was the sign by itself it would have been a stupid random and pointless background detail (which is what I thought it was when I first saw it until the deer showed up. Then it, at least, had some sort of payoff). Not saying the joke is some sort of masterpiece or anything, it's not even that good. But, at least for me, it was better than if it were just any of the two elements by themselves.

    Whoa I am late to the party but TH-cam just recommended this to me so here goes: I'd also add that Disenchantment lacks an emotional core. Homer, for all his laziness and stupidity, loves his family and wants to be respected in his eyes. He wants to be a "good father" and has to battle against his own faults to that end. That's what makes him , in my opinion, a heroic character in contrast to someone like Peter Griffen. In Futurama the same can be said for Fry. He loves Leela. He loves Bender. He loves life and is literally living his futuristic dream. Despite suffering from many of the same faults as Homer, Fry 's love hand happiness seems to be the driving goal for his adventures and his emotional justification for his choices.
    Princess Bean on the other hand ... just likes to drink. She's cut from the same emotional laziness as (sorry, Seth, I love Orville but...) Peter Griffen. Disenchantment feels less like Simpsons or Futurama and more like Family Guy meets HarmonQuest . HarmonQuest is also better than Disenchantment!

      "Princess Bean on the other hand ... just likes to drink" I would like to argue against this, although her character spends her time in a tavern as the show progresses, they give us various indications why she became alcoholic. Being the first, and something that she also tends to blame, is the bad example she had to follow from her father, the fact that she always felt that her brother was treated better since he is the official heir, the loss of her mother, and the fact that she could never be romantically related to anyone else, since everyone is afraid of Zog, also being that reason why she has only two friends. As well in season 2 it is shown that she has emotional damage, but her father taught her to ignore it and pretend that nothing happen instead of fixing it or talking about it, so in the end she ended up resorting to beer and constant fights, to forget about it.
      Although I sincerely wish there was a little more evolution between Bean's relationship with her father, or her brother, now that her stepmother is out of the picture. Since, although some episodes are dedicated to it, this evolution is lost in the next one.
      Even so, the evolution she has had with the protagonists is decent and even with the bad jokes, I still watch it for the story and all the construction of the world. But tha't just my opinion, and I respect yours.

    • @lyvectra6270
      @lyvectra6270 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It might only appeal to a small subset of the population. It sounds like you feel the heart of the show should be someone who has some positive aspects in their emotional state and cares about things outside themselves. That isn't what Bean is. She is in a negative emotional state day in and day out, and if you listen closely she cares about the people in the kingdom and wants to make something of herself but doesn't know how to even begin to try. Her relationship with her father is something that I personally relate to----one of being constrained to specific roles because of societal expectation, but not really being enforced (I'm a female, so I'm supposed to be thin and pretty and nice, but my dad only once a week tries to enforce a diet, lots of inconsistency growing up and just resentment now that I'm an adult); caring about each other but not really having the right emotional connection to express it outwardly, it's more just subtle things and it only shows up during times of stress; the attempts for the father to control the daughter, etc. I think there are women who can relate to Bean, sans the uncontrollable drinking.

It's as though they honestly expect our viewership is just a given and we need to be silent and move on with our lives afterward. If I did that, I wouldn't even hate your show. I would think it so mediocre I'd forget about it the next day. I'm also sorry you think that I shouldn't expect quality out of the entertainment I watch for entertainment purposes and that it should therefore be enjoyable. Maybe you shouldn't even be in this business if you care so little about your livelihood that you mash your face on your keyboard, steal from someone who actually knows what they're doing without understanding why it works and calling it a script. Of course no work is perfect, and people are going to catch things even if you're careful, but people generally don't get rabidly angry at those. Your work reflects you, your commitment and passion. If the fans care more about your job than you do, go do something else with your life.

She made herself deliberately the most hateable person possible, because it got her TV time, because it got shows ratings, basically. Now... either she truly believed her own venomous crap, or she was an advantageous chancer who didn't care what hate she spread so long as she earned coin off it. Either way, fuck her and all that she stood for.

      she even falsely accused an innocent Muslim family on air for being connected to terrorism, and was hit with a massive lawsuit becasue of her false claims.

    Just did a full series marathon of "Disenchanted" and was thinking about making a video on it myself but you have covered everything I was going to say a lot better than I would have done!!!
    The whole thing comedicly felt like they put in just enough for it to feel like a Matt Groening programme but his heart wasnt really in it. In the simpsons and futurama most of the comedy came from the fact that the characters were truly ridiculous and the comedy came from absurd combinations of people interacting, but with this because the characters were never strong enough in the first place, they relied on "Zingers" that nobody was prepared to think up. Felt like I a case of "What can we get away with" rather than "What else can we squeeze in".
    In the last few years, Greonings comedy has felt a little weaker than it used to be but he has got much better at storytelling and getting an emotional response from viewers, the last couple of episodes I could see that that is what he was trying to do, and thats fine if you like his recent stuff, but given that most people agree that his earlier stuff was better, I think he made a lot of bad bets through the whole thing and almost none of it worked. The pop culture stuff was great but that has always been a safe bet with him.
    I watched the whole season back to back and felt I had wasted my time, if I could have thought of anything I wanted to watch I would have ditched this, my gf only got as far as 3 episodes before making her mind up. It could have been great, it definitely wasn't... Keep up the good work though, still love your style bud

      Thanks! You said one thing I should have but didn't - it felt like his heart wasn't in it, and that's the crux of the issue. If you want to make a video, don't not do it just because of mine! • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do realize Matt Groening does NOT write his shows?
      He provides some editorial input but these shows literally have crews of writers and no single one person writes EVERY line in a series! It's not uncommon for people to submit a story idea but the final script has very little dialogue that that person actually wrote themselves.
      There's a whole controversy about what Groening did or didn't create in The Simpsons. The final designs of the characters are NOT his... They're very different from the Tracey Ullman Show where they originated (and on which he did the original character designs) and on The Simpsons TV series they're generally softer and not anywhere near as mean-spirited as those original versions, too.
      A lot of people people credit "The Spirit" of The Simpsons to the late Sam Simon, the original head writer. You should really read The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History by John Ortved. Very eye-opening -- Matt Groening is the Gene Roddenberry of The Simpsons in every good and negative sense of that phrase. There's a reason why Sam Simon won a MAJOR lawsuit against Groening and Gracie Films...

    Honestly my biggest problem with the show is that 95% of the jokes feel like...
    Imagine you had a role playing game with your friends, you laughed over it together, reminisced over the wacky characters and antics you made, and then you tried to turn it into a cartoon.
    The problem is that for everyone but you and your friends, the jokes won't actually land, because they're the types of random things that 'You had to be there' to find funny.
    Everything is so random that it feels like I'd find it funnier if it were my friends telling the jokes, with the benefit of theater of the mind. There are times I find it funny, but honestly I've found myself laughing more at Family Guy jokes, because at least sometimes they cut away to something I find half funny, in an embarrassing way.
    Seth McJokeStealingFarlane is somehow funnier than the father of the Simpsons, which is kind of sad given the kind of low effort crap he pushes in all 3 of his shows.
    As a side note. All this animation budget on Disenchantment's opening and promotion, yet the animation is stiff, and lazy in many parts, like early American Dad episodes, just phoned in with characters simply sanding completely still with only their faces moving.
    Maybe if they get rid of the "Lol, so random" and "Hey, fellow kids" kind of vibes the show gives me, I'll laugh more than once an episode :\
