Something to add at 37:35 - The filming in Xinjiang had long since been completed when the controversy erupted, but I find it extremely difficult to believe that Disney didn't even have an inkling about what was going on. Disney seriously thought that giving Mulan chi powers in the remake was somehow more realistic and empowering than having her train hard to achieve fighting skills for battle like in the original.
"Well, we here at Walt Disney Corp know that women can't do anything at all, so we'll have to give her magic powers and plot armor so she can accomplish stuff! This is what will make the masses like us again! Hey, let's see if any of the concentration camp guards in the province will help us by providing security too!" *snorts twelve more lines of coke*
Literally the original mulan character was so much more empowering because she proved that she was capable of fighting and protecting her father and friends. God I am so sick of this shit it isn't hard to write a female character that is strong that isn't some overpowered badass immediately at the beginning of the movie with no development in character.
From what I heard, that was a CCP input, based in the idea that even powerful individuals must use their power for the betterment of the country, and to support the chinese propaganda of chi powers actually being a thing and a point of chinese national pride.
Fun fact: Liu Yifei (the new Mulan) is actually considered one of China's worst actresses in the country, (with persistent rumours that she wants to emote as little as possible to avoid the risk of looking unappealing).
Liu Yifei is what we called a "vase" actress , shie is indeedly beautiful but her acting is just so wooden. in China there are a famous wuxia novel called "The Return of the Condor Heroes" which has many chinese drama adaptation over the year. Liu was casted as the main female character Xiaolongnü in one of the recent adaptation and indeed she was able act cool and distance(while looking great ofc) in the begining, but when she needs to interact with other characters (especially her love interest in the drama) she is just lacking in acting and manner compare to 10 other actress who had the same role as her
As usual the problem isn't women being bad at the thing, it's the fail sons making it terrible by picking the worst actress they can find because "hurr hurr, pretty woman."
I remember one Chinese reviewer said she missed Mushu, but was more annoyed that they used a western Phoenix instead of an eastern Fenghuang, Zhuque, or Jinwu. She said the rabbit metaphor was used incorrectly & that Chi doesn't mean what they think it does.
Ahhhhhh! So freaking dumb. I CANNOT believe this. "Let's use one super important Chinese symbol instead of this also super important Chinese symbol! We're not Chinese!"
Nothing says "female empowerment" like the idea that a woman has to have superpowers just to be as good as a man. Edit: This phenomenon is also known as "female emsuperpowerment".
As always, it's never about empowerment or reinforcing good progressive concepts. It's all just a stunt to trick people into buying their shit. After all, by the time you've seen the movie and realized how horrible it actually is both on a film level and a feminist level, they've already got your money. Pathetic.
The whole point of Mulan is the fact that for a sizable time she was treated to be the equal of any man and used those opportunities to create real change. To literally give Mulan more power over others is too complete miss any potential gender message they were trying to have.
Amen. That was my biggest problem with my film as well. In the original she had to train to get better. In this movie they basically gave her superpowers and she just had to “believe in herself”
This is made really clear by a line from the original poem that Disney A: Awkwardly Shoehorned into a scene and B: GOT WRONG. That weird out of nowhere line Mulan says about seeing two rabbits running and thinking one was a boy and one girl? Yeah, in the poem there's a line about how if you see two rabbits running you wouldn't be Able to tell if either are male or female.
@@dasfowler I mean, that's hardly a high bar to pass. But Yes, it perfectly embodies that, when acting as a soldier, she was a soldier, regardless of gender.
I love how they were so ignorant they ended up pissing off not only the western audience but the people this film was meant to please. essentially it just pissed off everybody.
I've run into 3 other reviews (including Xiran Jay Zhao's which is amazing) and all were deeply negative from different angles: cinematography, culture and general appeal, action and tactics... what a mess.
"We don't tend to break into song when we go to war." The French legit sang a song about Onions while marching into enemy fire. How shittier can that argument get?
Don't forget the Christmas Truce where BOTH SIDES sang Silent Night. This is why the truce even HAPPENED in the first place, with people on both sides breaking out into song.
Okay so the fact that the Khan could catch an arrow on horseback, yet couldn't do it later confirms that his power comes from his horse. The horse is the true villian. And as far as I can recall we didn't see it die. The plot thickens.
It would probably improve the movie if after he dies, the shot cuts to the horse stood in the background, looking on. The horse then says, "Sacrifices must be made for the strong to survive. I'll be watching you, Mulan." and trots away.
For the horses, well they just mysteriously disappear from the battlefields. One scene they were charging forward on horses, the next scene they were all fighting on foot.
You have to consider that depicting Mulan actually disrupting the social order would be offensive to CCP guidelines and The Mouse can’t have that, so naturally they went with the easiest, laziest plot device to both make her a powerful warrior and not offend government censors: superpowers. But she also didn’t earn the powers or go through any sort of a character arc to gain them, she was born with them and doing backflips and shit to catch chickens since childhood and everyone in her village just accepted it as an everyday part of life. What a load of shit. Fuck this film. I’m glad my girlfriend’s ex’s family bought this on their Disney+ account which he forgot to log out of on her Roku, because I’d be genuinely pissed if I shelled out 30 US dollars for this steaming turd.
Ya know I would have had no problem with the concept of Chi being in this movie if it was something that Mulan actively had to work for like even in most media with magic the characters have to work in order to learn it's secrets.
I said it once and I’ll say it again, as a Chinese person who watched animated Mulan while I was still getting used to western culture, I loved everything about it. INCLUDING Mushu. I like toony/goofy characters, especially if they have an arc. I don’t care if dragons are supposed to be all-powerful giant guardians, and I don’t care if Mulan herself was westernized. It was one of the best Disney films to me. Mulan was one the best examples of how to write strong female characters; you give them flaws and obstacles just as you would to any other kind of protagonist.
From what ive heard, the animated version is much more popular with younger people in china. I find this really interesting, and another great example of Hollywood being unspeakably out of touch
I'm not Chinese but I was born and raised in Asia and all my ideologies, ideas, and opionions heavily align with our values in the East. When I saw Mulan as a young girl, I was blown away, it was such an amazing film and for the first time I saw something I can completely relate to. The worried mother, the formidable father, and the superstitious grandmother. It was like seeing my world on screen on a Disney film, it was great. I have been living in America for about 4 years and I am heavily critical of westernizing Asian things but looking back, I never really saw Mulan as a Western interpretation of the east. If anything, I see it now as something that both Asian-Americans and Asians born and raised in their own home countries could enjoy and relate to. Mulan wasn't too much of the classic "I'm-an-individual" western character, she proved herself and made something of herself while also remaining filial. I know this is kind of a mess of an explanation but I never thought of Mulan to be too Western but I think that the original Mulan was a wayyy better representation of Eastern culture than Mulan 2020
As a Chinese person I can assure you most people aren’t offended at Mushu for cultural reasons. He’s too different for Chinese people to take seriously as an attempt at realistic depiction. It’s probably a small vocal group who didn’t like Mulan in the first place and while venting about it decided to also diss on Mushu. A lot of Chinese audiences who watched the original were upset Mushu was left out in the remake.
modern asians dont really care that much about the usage of Dragons and mythical creatures in media. the chinese cookies saying used in props and dialogues tho, its dumb
This is something I remember thinking about when I first heard the "Chinese people didn't like it because it was 'too Western.'" That it had to be a vocal minority. I felt like no reasonable person would make that argument because yes, no shit, a movie made by Westerners is going to be distinctly Western. The exact same way a movie made in China about a Western folk tale would be distinctly Chinese despite their best efforts. Anyone with even double-digit IQ would understand that. Like, if a movie being "too Western" is a deal-breaker for someone, why on Earth are they watching movies made in the West in the first place?
A woman doesn't have to be "masculine" to be empowered. The animated mulan was a good mix of yin and yang. I loved how she defeated the villain with her fan, a feminine object. That was super cool. Also she getting married to li Shang doesn't in any way mean she is any less "empowered"
Feminists wouldn't know that though because they either can't get a boyfriend or husband and that's why they hate men or they use what some men did as an excuse to hate all of them.
Oh, but didn't you know? The Institution of marriage itself propagates sexism cause it will almost always make sure that the woman will end up being oppressed by the man and become a lowly housewife. (Which btw, isn't a lowly role in reality.)
@@RKNancy well, that doesn't happen in every marriage. So marriages as a broad institution cannot be blamed for the lack of mutual trust in any particular couple.
The thing with the Phoenix is that is isn’t even a Chinese thing. The idea of the Phoenix rising from the ashes is entirely western. It’s like Disney needed something to replace mushu with, so they decided on something vaguely mythical and just went with it.
China does have phoenixes though, they're just not the rising-from-the-ashes kind. If I remember right, the phoenix in China is supposed to represent the Chinese Empress the same way the dragon represents the Emperor.
@@JenamDrag0n Pheonixes are literally representing of elegance and are there to look pretty basically. So, in Mulan it is that tad bit more mysoginistic.
Several problems: 1. Since when are superpowers “more realistic”? 2. Who decided that this was a more “woke” movie? If I remember the animated movie correctly, she proved that she was as good as any man, not due to superpowers, but through hard work and tactics. She wasn’t special, she was a normal woman.
Somehow it's become sexist to show women as anything other than perfect Mary-Sue characters that don't have to TRY. It's OK to have them demean and drag down others to show their innate superiority but having to learn, grow, or change at all is part of the alt- right. 🙄🙄🙄
It was the biggest idiocy ever to say XD Yeah, singing on marches helps with morale, it gives a sense of unity between the soldiers and even the commanders - all sing, all are part of the same group, everyone with their own voice given.
As a Chinese American Mulan was a huge role model for me. The fact that she wasn’t magical and she was a badass made me love watching the original movie. The new one made my heart hurt since they ruined an already amazing character
mulan is the only disney princess with a kill count and was made before disney decided to milk feminism and it sucks that kids can't look up to her as much because she now lacks the strengths everyone originally loved her for
@@randompromises1038 like the princess and the frog? I mean honestly I was pretty sad when we didn’t see much of them as human but like it makes so much sense to do that but HOPEFULLY Disney makes a dark skinned and not mixed and make her human throughout all the movie cause I’m tired of black characters of Turing into something else.
In regards to the "trope-ness" of the rain when the animated dad finds out, it's actually in the original ballad that it's raining so hard she can't hear her parents calling for her.
I am beyond over it . The days of Ellen Ripley have come to an end it seems. We can’t just have well written female characters, no it’s the fact that they are female that makes them special , or chi in this case. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Honestly Fuck Disney.
@Dylan Sharp Honestly I couldn’t think of any of the top of my head unless they are from animated shows . Mainstream movies have been missing the mark so hard for me . I’m sure there are plenty , but the fake pandering female empowerment blah blah blah is starting to get on my nerves. Perhaps I exaggerated my statement honestly so... grain of salt I guess
We live in a world where an animated film series about a fucking anthropomorphic fighting panda made for fun is more faithful and more respectful to Chinese culture, as well as more liked by Chinese audiences, than a 2020 live-action film made solely to pander to Chinese audiences.
Its true! DreamWorks did their homework with this animated martial arts comedy classic! The film was so successful that it impressed the Chinese government and they asked themselves why didn't they make a movie like this? To this day, Kungfu Panda remains as both one of my favorite DreamWorks movies and one of my favorite Jack Black films! 🐼🌙
As a girl I find it more sexist to have feminism show that you can only be strong by having the personality of cardboard, powers, and being the chosen one. That’s setting an unrealistic standard the original Mulan had never taught us.
The "chosen one" thing is an annoying cliche whether the character's a man or a woman. Instead of being a hero who wants to do the right thing they pull "You were destined from birth to be this or that."
@@Xehanort10 The concept itself isn't bad. It's how it's implemented. Take Anakin Skywalker, for example. He was destined to bring balance to the force, but what did he do? Killed all of the Jedi, choked out his wife, fought his friend, got his shit kicked in and became the galaxy's largest mass murderer. He eventually brought balance to the force, but to get to that point, he became the villain and nearly killed his own son. Or take Po from Kung Fu Panda, he was destined to be the greatest warrior the world has ever seen, but when you first see him and when you first see him in action, he's an absolute fuck up. Eventually, he gets to the point where he does become the greatest warrior after working on his flaws, but even then, he still fucks up and still grows. Then you have Aang from The Last Airbender. If you've seen it, I don't have to tell you about his journey.
I don't even know why they keep giving them no personality Saitama is defined by how unstoppably powerful he is, and he's a really good guy But he isn't cardboard He has a very defined personality So why can't Disney do that?
@@zombieguy4444 because Saitama as a character took good writing skills and genuine care to create. Not virtue signaling and pandering running the script. To write a balanced cast and likeable story, plot and character line takes a huge amount of effort, skill, time and budget. One when writing One Punch Man wrote it as a comic for fun and later tried to make something of it and mob physcho, resulting in him trying for years actively working to get them noticed with poor drawing skills but an insane writing talent for his given medium. He wasn't and will never be a director or team manager. He knew that and knew he needed them. Disney can't tell it's dollar bill from its dollar coin. Let alone knowing the difference between a good human resources department and a good creative director. Being gay isn't a personality, it's a part of someone, but not their whole life, being a feminist isn't a personality either, nor a nationalist, or an activist aiming for a goal (be it an end to racism or just not killing our planet, or whatever else). Disney can't see that, it sees a movement and makes that a personality trait, and it refuses to show the human parts to a character that makes their fight relatable. It fails everyone, and everything in trying to please everyone and everything.
@@Xehanort10 I agree bro. Also I see you everywhere. Also yeah but as long as the chosen one is interesting I don't mind. Still though I prefer no chosen one.
"Soldiers wouldn't break out into song". Thanks for setting them straight on that. Singing was one of the few things soldiers and sailors had to entertain themselves; some were very good at it and massively improved morale.
“A girl worth fighting for” is so very accurate in the idea of soldiers singing about women and the comforts of home while on the march. While it’s not the most catchy of the songs in the soundtrack, it holds a special place in my heart. Plus, having a fun and light musical number end with the village makes the gut punch of the real so much more impactful
@@katrinamyers4999 Also everyone and their mother has said it But the tone changing as soon as they arrive at the destroyed village is such a good show of the horror of war The remake just shows a typical action "war is just a bunch of different fight scenes"
@@katrinamyers4999 I remember realising that when you see the doll left behind in the village, the civilian casualties of war are represented by the girl it belonged to, thus she's also "a girl worth fighting for".
And now we wait for Cruella to come out and be just as bad in its own way while a bunch of idiots in film journalism praise it and make direct comparisons to joker
Ten bucks says they compare it to both Maleficent and Joker, praise it endlessly, and blame any bad reviews on *"sexist males not wanting a strong female lead"* like they always default to when a shit movie comes out.
"Lets be realistic and remove the Dragon and songs, guys." "Really? Alright. Realistic we go then. What do we do?" "Lets add a Phoenix, wall running ninjas, Chi magic and a shapeshifting witch." "... What?"
@@haihai9022 I love how he makes a Stand, when even Disney-Tubers dont. Thats Spine, my friends, thats Spine. Or how Old People once called it 'Spunk'. Haha, no kidding, thats a Word. Anyway: Mulan was a Masterpiece, but not on the Level of Lilo and Stitch, so i am terrified of the recent News that Lilo and Stitch will also get a Disney-Overhaul - and its life-action also. This Highest-Quality-Level Franchise was already mishandled before this was announced, but now it gets an Overhaul?!? Oh dear God... Lilo and Stitch is highest quality, but massively mishandled and got multiple RIP OFFS.
Mulan 1998: Mulan is a normal young woman who overcomes difficulties using courage, inner strength and perseverance.💪 Mulan 2020: Mulan is a bland Mary Sue who can NEVER fail, and has random superpowers. 🙄
Yup.. because to do female empowerment they have no other idea than creating a mary sue and shoving said character down the audiance's throat as "too good to fail" at every single turn. ESPECIALLY disgraceful here as the animated mulan did it right with a female character breaking through the woman stereotype of traditional china through genuine merit and, you know... EFFORTS AND STRUGGLE.
People are practically bred for apathy, other than that it's only a matter of time before they fade into obscurity and finally die a death they more than deserve as a corporation
That’s how it always is. The people on top cannot be toppled, even when something like the Epstein case or the panama papers comes out, there is no punishment.
But on a less political note, Disney can afford to fail, they have more than enough money and the reputation from their pasts masterpieces have made them the powerhouse they are today. It’d take decades before that could change
Don't forget, Disney is not invincible. They were nearly hostile taken over back in the 80's and 2000's. Once they committed enough mistakes, it will add up again.
So the movie managed to offend: 1. Fans of the original movie 2. China 3. America 4. LGBTQ+ 5. Black people 6. Advocates of female empowerment 7. Advocates of hong kong 8. Muslims 9. BOTH sides of the U.S political spectrum Did I miss anything here? It's impressive how in their attempt to create a movie to appeal to a specific audience, Disney managed to not only create a terrible movie, but also offend pretty much everyone. Amazing.
To this day, I have yet to see a movie that conveyed a decision as effectively weighty as the one that Mulan makes in the original cartoon. Without words, and even without understanding the implications as a child, I understood how intense and scary this decision was for her. She knew there was a good chance she would die for any number of reasons... she knew that there was an excellent chance that she would never come home, and what that would mean for her family... and they communicated that brilliantly IMHO. Even watching that scene as an adult and understanding the historical inaccuracies, the weight of that scene is amazing. Having that scene cut down to an instant costume change is astoundingly tragic.
Holy Hell, you're right! I've been getting into a lot more Chinese fantasy recently. One of the big historical facts I learned was the sacred symbolism of their long hair. And I JUST REALIZED SHE CUT IT ALL OFF! Right at the beginning to keep herself from getting cold feet! That's basically committing sacrilege and disowning yourself!
Let me just give you a visualisation of what happened on the heads of the people that made this movie: Point of the story --------------->------------------>--- --------------->------------------->------------->--------------------->--------------------->----------------------------->--------------->------------------>------------------->---------------------->-------------------------->----------------->--------------------->------------------->------------------------>---------------------->------------------>------------------->---------------------->--------------------->------------------------>------------------->------------------->---------------------->---------------------->------------------------->----------------->---------------->------------------------->-------------------->------------------------>------------------>------------------>-------------------------->----------------->--------------------------->------------------->--------------->-------------------------->---------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->------------------------->------------------>-------->---------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------->------------------->---------->------------->---------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------->------------------->------------>------------------->-------------------------->--------------->---------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->-------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------->------------------->-------------------------->--------------->---------->------------------>------------------>------------------------->------------------->-------------------------->--------------->------->--------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------>------------------->------------------------->------------------>------------------>------------------------->------------------->-------------------------->--------------->----------->-------------------->------------------------>----------------->------------------>--------------------------->------------------->------------------------->---------------->----------------->----------------------------> Mulan has magic powers now, I've decided.
Actually it is veryaccurste to the chinese culture and kung fu. So much so that the franchise is one of the most popular in China (i mean they made an entire theme park of the triology. Look it up) and even Alledgedly the ccp were so impressed with the films that they were asking themselves why didnt they make them.
Keep going CJ, keep exposing Disney's horrific behaviour, and don't let Google (TH-cam's parent company) shut you up! Keep up the good work. If Google's gonna silence you for exposing shitty behaviour, I'll support you in your efforts
Better off watching the 2009 Chinese war film “Mulan: Rise of a Warrior”. This one is MUCH more faithful to the spirit of the original story. In this version, Mulan has risen-up the ranks through pure hard work And military strategy AND THEN command an entire army for the latter half of the film. The film more accurately portrays the burden of command, including the mortal cost of war, relationships with the soldiers under her command (including friends), as well as consequences of wartime decision making. Mulan is not some super powered warrior, you see the the physical and mental toll the war has on her character. It’s a long film, but definitely worth the watch IMO
Or the old TVB Hong Kong TV series that is in my childhood. Not as faihful to the legend, but a better, developed cast of characters. Male and female characters used brains and brawns to overcome bad situations without plot armours or special protagonist advantages.
Or watch Matchless Mulan (2020), made by none other than China. And actually, Mulan does, in the start of the 2009 verson have kung fu abilities, but that doesn't change or break the power escalation or anything bad. Also the soundtrack is great, being unique in its own way, while also works in favor of the story if you translate some of the OSTs.
"She may be a good actress" Um, no. No. For the record, Jin Young once said: “Ms. Liu looks pretty, but she is afraid of being ugly, and she doesn’t dare to make facial expressions.”

I mean, it is unintentionally quite a great comedy At least I was laughing a lot while watching it Especially at the fake ass kung fu (seriously, even stuff like Kung Fu Hustle has better martial arts) and the dwarf emperor Jet Li (he just looks so tiny in his armor and compared to the main lead it is just hilarious)
Knuckles: “You know, Disney. Whenever someone tries to call attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is the exception and not the status quo.”
We want representation not Representation™. The best way to break gender stereotypes is to have varied (in this case) female characters. Some are girly, some are tomboys, some like guys a lot, some don't care about dating at all, some are (the horror) gay or even black They all can be heros
As a young girl, Mulan was my favorite “princess”. She was quirky and different and didn’t fit the mold of the world around her. Being a young autistic child, I saw myself through her. The new Mulan is a spit in the face to the movie I loved. It took the hard work and intellect that got Mulan through in the first place, and dumped it down the toilet and gave her a superficial superpower that put her above the rest. Everything that mattered, everything that was beautiful and nuanced and good about the first film was stripped away and now we’re all left with this steaming pile of dog shit. Fuck Disney.
Imagine a version where Mulan actually got consequences for using her powers as a child and made her feel so much shame and fear that she locked them inside. Now to save her father has to figure out how to use them again.
It's hilariously true , the original mulan was way more feminist, she went from being inferior to her fellow male soldiers to being better by learning where her advantaged are compared to them ... This new mulan .... Superpowers! The end
It's because corporations are paying lip service to actual criticism that is intended to make MORE movies like the old ones. Like, the criticism has been true so far, but corporations are flanderizing it because actually *listening* to people costs too much time and money, so they'd rather just hire someone completely tertiary to it and then slap a "this is feminism" label on something that's hilariously condescending. That being said there's some genuinely good shit that gets slapped with the "forced feminist" label simply because it's more modern than older stuff.
I feel like one of the reasons this happens is they hire people who are SO focused on the 'feminist' part that they don't bother/know how to write a good story. They checked off the 'female' part and thought that was all they had to do.

This adaptation really got under my skin because Mulan was a role model of mine as a child. She made me feel really proud of my womanhood and the movie still touches me to this day. Having a dogshit remake of it feels like an attack on my childhood
100% same. Also the whole father daughter dynamic still brings me to tears to this day. It's so heartbreaking how bad this remake is. Also that reviewers actually call it female empowerment is maddening. I want to watch actual stories of women who find their way and struggle as inspiration, like self made. But no.
Take Mulan, turn her into a Mary Sue, remove the comic relief characters, and insert a lot of historical inaccuracy and you basically have the live action remake of Mulan
I went to a talk by an entertainment lawyer who interviewed at Disney, and she said she was rejected with, "We don't think you have the Disney mentality," and she asked what meant, and it basically came down to the fact that she was too nice.
It's a total failure that Disney was allowed to buy Marvel. There is a reason companies are stopped from growing that big because when they crash they will take out whole economies with them. Too big to fail is also too big to exist.
I'm white and my wife is Chinese and we absolutely love the animated Mulan. We both absolutely hated the new Mulan, so at least both movies brought people of different cultures together, just in completely opposite ways. I can't imagine how fucking dumb you have to be to want to make a movie about female empowerment and not realize how giving her special powers so she has an edge is the complete opposite of that, the movie is literally telling us that without her powers she wouldn't have succeeded...such powerful!
@@lifeisverystressful3404 That if you have a story about female empowerment, giving them magic powers to give them an edge over everyone in fact just makes them a weaker character because they rely on being special to win. In the original Mulan she was just smart and skilled and proved herself through her own merit. A female empowerment story should acknowledge that men and women are different but that doesn't make women incapable.
@@lifeisverystressful3404 But it does in this case because it's a shitty remake of a good movie with a good message, giving her magic powers completely takes away that message for a lesser movie.
"Men can show affection and admiration for each other while still being straight." Finally, someone who agrees with me! As a gay guy, I am so tired of people trying to LGBT-ize everything. Like, how any man that doesn't fit an outdated 1950s era definition of what being a man is must be gay, bisexual, nonbinary, etc.
I blame teenage romance shippers. In any film or show they watch they think a man and a woman, 2 men or 2 women glancing for a few seconds at each other equals instant love.

Adding one point to the "not breaking into song during war" There was even this historic event in China where an army fled cause the heard enemy singing, and thought they were surrounded. That plus military song is one of the first things we need to mesmerize in army.
I absolutly agree with your pov about the music! In the animation, The transition from happy marching song to the silence of a village devastated by war was shocking! Like "No more happy times! Welcome in the horrors of war!"
I mean, qi is bullshit but the way it's used in wuxia style stories is basically how it's used in Mulan. Wuxia, which translates to something like martial hero I believe, has it's roots in millenia old folk tales where a wandering martial artist can effectively become superhuman through training and the use of qi so frankly it's entirely consistent with its portrayal in this movie. It is also very popular as a topic for chinese webnovels and movies so the chinese can't care about it that much

A thing about Mulan (and every other powerful character in movies) is that weakness makes characters relatable and shows how human the characters are despite them being the main character.
what makes classic Mulan better is when Mulan reveals herself to Shan Yu as the one who ruins his plan he refers to her as 'the soldier from the mountain' not a woman a soldier which to me was the correct way to be progressive because Shan Yu recognise her and knows she was a threat not by gender but from a previous encounter. And we once again see their skill difference in their battle were Shan Yu is obviously stronger than her so Mulan needs to use her head to find a way to beat him.
I liked that Disney hinted a cultural differences. As much as the Huns in the cartoon movie are drawn in a way that makes them look kinda un-human (which was probably unnecessary in retrospect but I think it may have been a stylistic decision to make them easy to tell apart from the protagonists in battle scenes that might not have been ill-intended) I find some care is given to hinting at that the Huns, for all of their brutality, aren't entirely awful, immediately and fully respect Mulan as an intelligent warrior and aren't at all phased she's a woman, even when her fellow protagonists are phased by that. In a time where villains are all either re-conned into the misunderstood good guys who really did nothing wrong or are made out to be such irredeemable monsters they clearly were taught their morality by Hitler himself and still failed the class, it's refreshing to have a movie be like "our antagonists and protagonists are allowed to be a little complex without re-conning their role in the story.
@@annegrey3780 Concerning the inhuman design... I don't think it's THAT problematic in context. By which I mean, a story about say, english people during the viking invasions, there would probably be a similar stylistic contrast between main characters and antagonists. Would uit be insensitive to Scandinavians? Yes, but at least it's not "Racist" racist because broadly speaking everyone there is of the same "race", at least in our modern perception of it. It's an understandable use of exaggerated character design as a visual shorthand for who's a good guy or a villain. It's one of the perks of animation over live action, and it would be a shame if artists held back on using it to its fullest.
I love how basically everybody who critiques this movies on TH-cam at some point just points to Xiran Jay Xhao's video and more or less says "Here's where you can find all the specific details wrong with this film, I'm not even going to try and top this". On the one hand, it really sucks that they did such a horrible job with Mulan. There was so much potential and they trashed it, which is unfortunate. Y'know what's a better movie than Disney's live action Mulan? The Chinese live action Mulan. Seriously, just go watch Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. It's pretty friggin' good while following the ballad much better. Mulan isn't speshul with superpowers, she earns a position as General by actually participating in the war through wit and work, and it's about her journey in the leadership position before her identity inevitably gets revealed. Oh and also the most impactful scene involves SINGING, because war songs are definitely a thing and integral for morale. So suck it, Disney.
Good that you specified "Rise of a Warrior" or otherwise I would have to ask you, which of the live action Mulans from China you mean. They had two, maybe three, last year alone.
To be fair, I don’t think the Chinese government really cares that much about such things as long as it looks good somehow. I mean, I read somewhere about a Chinese martial artist who ended up being harassed by his country’s government at a time when they were actually trying to promote martial arts for nationalistic reasons. The reason? He had literally been going around challenging martial arts teachers to expose their incompetence, and the government thought it made them look bad even though he was in the right the whole time. If you’re wondering where I read about this, I believe it was on RationalWiki’s page on “McDojo”, which is their shorthand for the phenomenon of con artists who teach martial arts incorrectly for a quick buck.
Thank you for actually talking about Hong Kong as part of your analysis on Mulan. One of the most unintentionally funny interviews about this film was when the director said the live action version of Mulan wasn't a superhero even though there's a scene where she kicks an arrow through a guy's eye.
She's "not a superhero" but yet has a special power that most people don't have which she needs to hide and uses it to save people. Yes, totally not a superhero/s.

Literally the original mulan character was so much more empowering because she proved that she was capable of fighting and protecting her father and friends. God I am so sick of this shit it isn't hard to write a female character that is strong that isn't some overpowered badass immediately at the beginning of the movie with no development in character.
So "Ha ha chi powahs supah" vs "Every woman who's ever slapped on men's clothes and gone to war"
Stunning and Brave.

Liu was casted as the main female character Xiaolongnü in one of the recent adaptation and indeed she was able act cool and distance(while looking great ofc) in the begining,
but when she needs to interact with other characters (especially her love interest in the drama) she is just lacking in acting and manner compare to 10 other actress who had the same role as her
@@askovtk4834 Well said.

Almost like women are people too... What a wild idea!

Really? Huh.
A woman doesn't have to be "masculine" to be empowered. The animated mulan was a good mix of yin and yang. I loved how she defeated the villain with her fan, a feminine object. That was super cool. Also she getting married to li Shang doesn't in any way mean she is any less "empowered"

Woke is not about equality, it disagrees a lot with MLK. Some genders and races are considered superior.

I don't even know why they keep giving them no personality
Saitama is defined by how unstoppably powerful he is, and he's a really good guy
But he isn't cardboard
He has a very defined personality
So why can't Disney do that?

I think the worst part is that no matter how bad of a job Disney does, they’re not going to be affected that much.

I mean, qi is bullshit but the way it's used in wuxia style stories is basically how it's used in Mulan.
