    I could be wrong, but my understanding of the rotors is that they basically need to be changed when the pads are changed. Long ago, the rotors used to be thicker and could be turned during a brake change. Now, for weight savings and fuel efficiency, the rotors are thinner and have a shorter life.

    Very, very helpful. Some videos like this aren't as clear as to how to check and adequately showing the parts so that you can see well enough. Thank you, good sir! One quick clarification though, that second pad you measured must have had 7 mm left on it, right? Earlier you said that when the indicator hits the disc, that means there's 2mm left. So, if there is a 5mm gap between the indicator and the disc, then when that 5mm wears away, there will be 2mm left, meaning there's currently 7mm, right? Am I understanding that correctly? I guess that would be 5mm of **useable** pad and 2mm left with the indicator touching. But the 50% thing confused me a bit, b/c it either seems like 7 out of 11 **total** mm left, OR, 5 out of 9 **useable** mm left.

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not always math, and accurate science on how fast those pads wear. It depends on quality of pad, rotor, and the whole assembly, and design of the brake. Rear brakes usually last longer than front brakes. The point here is, if you hear the noise, it is time to do something about it.

    • @billthompson2860
      @billthompson2860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The piston is not retracting and your pads are dragging on the rotor. You can get rebuild kits which is just a new piston seal or you can replace the assemblies. I do not recommend doing it yourself if your not so inclined. There are videos that show complete brake jobs with all the tricks on TH-cam. Also cleaning and lubricating the proper components is critical as well. Proper bleeding of the brakes is just as critical. I let the gravity method of bleeding work for me. If I am in a hurry I will use the proper bleeding kit with a special cup and hose. There are special tools for bleeding brakes if you want to purchase them.
