  • This week WAWTAR is honored to bring on Fr. Turbo Qualls and Cyprian of the Royal Path podcast. The Royal Path examines Orthodox Christian Tradition as it informs and manifests to us in our modern world.
Today Fr. Turbo, Cyprian, and Heers talk race, the notion of being and how we know where we're going. Along the way they also touch on the process of illumination and how is it's possible.

"Why Are We Talking About Rabbits?" takes you beyond rhetorical "rabbits" and the shallow approach that the media and most thinkers today take to examine contemporary cultural phenomena. Using theology, history, philosophy and years of travel in Mali, the Republic of Georgia, Haiti, and beyond, John Heers offers a refreshing take to how we got to where we are now. WAWTAR is all about talking about those heavy things… lightly.

My dad is black and my mom is from the Philippines. I always struggled with identity until I became Orthodox. I was pretty much ostracized by black people because I'm quiet and shy and I was always involved in things that black people thought was weird or different. Th black people always said I hated myself and I hate "my people". I began to ponder who my people actually are. At the time we're my people these black people who don't seem to like me very much or my family in the Philippines thousands of miles and an ocean away? Because I wasn't liked very much by black people I never put too much stock in my skin color (glory to God) to make it an idol I serve. When my husband and I were catachumens our priest who is from Lebanon said something in his homily that just made my struggles with race/ethnicity click for me. He said that as sinful people we care too much and involve ourselves in too many things that are not important. He said we make them important but we have to ask ourselves do these things that we make important ultimately matter to God. Then he said " if it doesn't matter to God it shouldn't matter to you". After I heard this I began to think does my racial identity truly matter to God? Does the fact that my great great great great grandparents on my dad's side served as slaves on a masters plantation get me automatic admission to heaven . Is God going to factor my race into my eternal salvation? God isn't petty and so I eventually realized no my race/ethnic is not number 1 on the list when it comes to my eternal salvation. There is such freedom in Christ and when I became Orthodox that was the moment I came home to claim my true identity in Christ.

Wow is this gorgeous… it is just so obvious that race (the thing we imagine as a true marker) is a concoction meant to divide us. Of course there is some reality to it, but no spiritual reality in just the way you said Ebony. It lacks depth of meaning, and cannot survive the divine ascent! It’s almost like a stage or an immaturity that must be shed in order to become fully human (which of course means full divine). Thank you for this!

Would love for you guys to get on Fr. Spyridon to talk about the new world vs the old world, how should the Orthodox respond to this dilemma, and also his great book "The UFO Deception". He's very in tune with what is currently going on and insightful on many subjects. I would love to see him on here, speaking on anything, honestly.

Love this interview. Cyprian (Vin Armani) was one of the two people who inspired me to look into Orthodoxy. Had never heard of it before and at the time was not even a Christian but since finding the Church and Holy Tradition I feel my life transforming. Thank God 🙏

I am a Catholic, following my parents footsteps, recently returning to the Church and practising the faith in my old age. I know I will not change Churches now - but Orthodoxy calls to me and I am glued to Orthodox channels and conversations. I read Orthodox books. So I just see myself as a Christian, a follower of our Lord who happens to go to a Catholic church and happens to love Orthodoxy.... Is this possible??

Ok I’m just gonna put this out there . Fr Turbo is an orthodox priest (who I’ve been following for ten years btw, jus sayin ) and Spyridon is tech/finance guy. So then what , if anything, is going on between NFT’s and orthodox and liturgical Christian attempts to build financial institutions and build community ? Is there such a thing ? There’s got to be a story on this

27:33 on coincidence and Cyprians amazing story - glory to God! This is what we deny those who sincerely love Christ, and are trying to follow them in their own way, and out of this idea of a false sense of "love" do not help them see that they are not in the Church - they can't participate with Him in His Mysteries, and commune with Him directly in His Body, the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. That is not love, its cruel to keep people in delusion.
St John of Kronstadt prayer for unity:
Unite in this faith all the great Christian societies, woefully having fallen aside from the unity of the Holy Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, which is Your Body and whose Head art Thou and the Savior of the Body… grant unto their hearts to know the truth and salvific nature of Thy Church and to unite with it; link to Thy holy Church also those who are suffering from ignorance, delusion, and the stubbornness of schism… Draw all nations populating the earth to this faith, that they may all glorify Thee, the only God of all, with one heart and one mouth. (Kizenko, ‘A Prodigal Saint: Father John of Kronstadt and the Russian People’, p. 54)

I am Orthodox. But my identity is not in "Orthodoxy", my identity is in Christ. I know that's the same thing, but it's also not.
