@jondoe1980 You know, the zapping system never felt that impactful to me, so I didn’t miss it this go round. I played the crap outta 1998 and never found it a big deal, neat, just not game changing. What did you like about it?
@@paulatredies9242 Upon reflection, I actually get where you are coming from. But once you break down the zapping system and its capabilities you can see why it was so significant... Firstly, it was 1998 and very few games were expansive enough to allow players to replay them AND get a variation on the experience. So what I liked was the following: Taking the side pack/machine gun or both would determine how you managed your resources thereafter; using the electric cord to shut the window shutters would make your run slightly easier next time around; turning on the B.O.W gas sprinklers in A would make the Plant 43 enemies poisonous/stronger in B; the fingerprint registration by the first character would allow the second character access to the locked lab experiment room; zombie Marvin or the giant alligator would show up again in B if they were not killed in A (not many people knew they could show up in both scenarios due to killing them upon first encounter). All of these aforementioned possibilities were player-driven choices that you chose whether or not to employ, and conducting these actions actually gave me an added sense of immersiveness that both my playthroughs were running concurrently with each other instead of the reallity that I was actually playing one after the other. This is why, 3 gaming generations later, I highly anticipated Capcom would have expanded on the zapping system to the point where a player's initial decisions are much more of a big deal than you say you felt when originally playing RE2 98. For example, they could have given players a false sense of making a correct choice, whereby making a room secure in run A would actually trigger a Tyrant encounter in run B; by not killing Marvin before he turns in A would make for a mini zombie Marvin boss fight in B. Instead Capcom decided to completely remove the system and took short cuts - Leon and Claire should not be completing the same puzzles over or fighting the same boss fights whatsoever. So taking all of this into account, hopefully you can realise how impactful a well developed zapping system could have actually been for RE2R's experience and replay value. Sorry if I waffled on a bit, lol.

While I love RE2 Remake as much as the next guy, I have to say that I was a bit bummed that the RPD also kind of lies to you. Basically it makes you think that the whole of RE 2 is just like you remembered it, but even more intricate and layered... But then you leave the RPD. And then you realize that the rest of the game's level design is simply not op to par not only with the RPD, but even with the original's level equivalents (this also has to do with the lack of variety between the remake's scenarios). And I also would have liked if the remake went a bit deeper with some of it's cool ideas. To this day I question my self on why doesn't the B scenario depend at all with your decisions in the A scenario. What's the point?
The level design of the remake was better and more detailed than the OG. You can’t just isolate individual areas in the OG and say it wasn’t up to par. The sewer in the OG was very linear compared to the remake’s layout, same with the lab. While the remake didn’t have a factory, it had a construction site which replaced that factory or otherwise popularly known as the Marshalling yard. Also, add to that there is rain in the game adds to the atmosphere. Remake was designed to be the superior game. The OG has the nostalgia factor going for it, nothing else.
@@captainjaber5610 But you can isolate them. While it is true that beyond the RPD the rest of the game becomes more linear, it's also built so that your experience changes depending on the scenario, which adds to the complexity of the level design (the best example of this is the Lab, but even the trip in the sewers changes pretty dramatically depending on the scenario). Also while the rain is a plus, the camera angles in the original are masterfully put so that you feel exactly what the game designers want you to feel (an example is the sight of the train in the factory in the night sky, which gives the impression that the night is still long, but also gives you a bit of fresh air from the enclosed spaces of the sewers. We are not talking about nostalgia here, but shere masterful game design. Also to be noted that I don't think that neither styles of camera angles are better than the other, just that they both have their quirks.
@@captainjaber5610 i agree about the sewers being better in the remake, but can't agree about the lab, which was simply bland and inferior in the remake and thanks to the fact there was zero difference between A and B scenarios, it felt even more linear IMO
@@captainjaber5610 I agree, the level design of the sewers and Lab is better in the remake. The original becomes pretty linear after the police station.
Say goodbye to all that with the direction they are going with at the end of RE8, the entire series just needs to go back to horror to much action. Capcom just does not know what to do with the series.
@@shloftyy Ugh I dont want to be in some European village dude we just had 8. I want them to explore more of Raccoon City. Outbreak would be lit if they took all the levels from Outbreak and gave them the RE2 Remake treatment.
That’d be so cool. I haven’t played Village yet so idk what happens in the story but I know Chris and Ethan hate each other now so it could be something like Ethan infiltrating the BSAA hq to kill Chris while Chris has completely lost it and fills it with a shit ton of zombies or monsters to kill Ethan. That is if they both survive Village. Like I say, I still haven’t played it yet
No...if the finale of Village is any indication, capcom is dead set on turning resident evil into the same call of duty/ re6 bullshit any time Chris gets involved, like he's some expert zombie killing super soldier and the series can't possibly be horror when he's the protagonist. Time to retire Chris. Leon, Claire and Jill are all way better when it comes to the original heroes. Jill and Chris were the original protagonists of the series, and I'm pretty sure the general consensus with fans is that Jill(with Barry) was better than Chris(with Rebecca) in the original game. Retire Chris and bring back Jill!
The same cannot be said how RE3 Remake turned out. But then RE2 remake had a missed opportunity of taking advantage of modern technology like including zapping system, something that Scenario A playthrough would affect the Scenario B playthrough based on your action on Scenario A
@@serenseitcean2051 Im actually playing through it, I love the puzzles, backtracking and the setting a lot. the controls have been the only thing keeping me from finishing so far

Favourite levels are the post completion unlock in Res 4 as Ada wong. If u die you u get sent straight to the beginning. Also the first area in res evil 5, still one of Favourite games to this day
The more I reflect on RE2R, the more I think it deserves a spot in my top 5 of all time games. The game is just so stunningly presented to the player alongside engaging survival horror gameplay. So good.
I love RE games up to the point where it completely drops the survival horror formula becomes an Action game. Right now I'm in the 3rd act of RE3. Nemesis is a relentless enemy throughout the game that can stop progress until the second showdown where he transforms into a giant wolf monster. It completely ruins character; by essentially reducing him to another zombie. But they always follow this pattern: it happens with Mr. X & in the finale of every other RE as well
1998: entire police department with no bathrooms 2019: one set of bathrooms for the entire building. lol, also RIP original Leon voice actor Paul Haddad. your performance set the bar for every Resi voice actor to come.
Resident Evil 2 98 did not have an item box in the hall. Thats something the remake added by moving it from the adjacent reception room to the main hall, a change which really should have been in the original to begin with because having the typewriter that far from the item box is tedious regarding using an ink ribbon. Especially with the long door opening animation/ loading screen.
I’m replaying this right now on my PS5 via Backwards Compatibility! I finished RE Village last week and that experience gave me the urge to replay RE 2 Remake! In my opinion RE 2 Remake is the greatest Survival Horror Game ever made! RE 4 has always been my favorite of the originals and I hope RE 4 Remake is as great as RE 2 Remake!!
RE3R had the potential to have you run around an entire city and get creative with obstacles, puzzles and setting etc. They could've easily implemented the maps in the Outbreak files and have Nemesis chased you around in them....but instead they cut content to make a 4 hour campaign for two characters to share :/
Rare game where location itself became a character 🔥... It was 2020 lockdown in india, I was in my hometown and ordered this masterpiece and was totally blown away... Update 2021 : playing village in second one.
This is why I consider RE2 Remake to STILL be the quintessential Horror RE experience. Not 7 nor 8, despite them being good games... but I would liken them to a Universal Horror Ride with just a little freedom from being on-Rails... RE 2 Remake gives you loads of movement, despite the claustrophobic corridors and the well placed puzzle blockers along your path.
Had no complaints. For my gen who played res evil as a kid and loved it, nothing but appreciation for it coming back. What didn't hurt at all was this was a gem masterpiece. I woulda taken a ps1 port in the ps4 store at the time. The games still have elements that vary and can never be duplicated. The shitty 90s audio files were super gritty and made it eerie in a different sense..so did the fixed camera and door loading screens. Those i still do value but they jus didnt fit into this remake.
My annoyance with the game was with the police station corridors being too dark. But when I seen it run in in 4k on pc it's better. Respect to anyone who completed it on ink ribbon saves
11:30 Noooo they don’t. When you’re aiming, just wait for the target reticule to shrink and your shot is more powerful. Have you even played this game? Edit: Nooo they don’t require “massive amounts of ammo to permanently kill”
The police station was better in every way in the remake compared to the original. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the rest of the game, which felt extremely linear thanks to the fact, there were no differences between A and B scenarios and both players visited almost the same areas...

I didnt play the classics RE. But the RPD section of Re2remake is an absolute masterpiece of level design. One of the best i've ever played, if not the best. The house of RE7 is also a masterpiece. 2 fantastic locations i will never forget. RE Village has some great moments too but dont come close to these 2 games. The factory and house beneviento are great.
I definitely prefer RE2 remake to Village but Village is more detailed it’s level design and world was superb. The village, castle, factory, Moreaus mines and reservoir were all fantastic. I wasn’t high on Beneviento but that’s because I don’t like psychological horror. Outside of that, Village is easily near the tier of RE2R.
@@captainjaber5610 i didnt like the moreau part, for me it was boring. And i expected more from the castle...i think it was too easy even on hardcore. @@digiman76 How can you expect more when the design of the game was centered around the Village, hence the game’s name. It wouldn’t make sense for a prolonged Castle part, the balance between all of the areas and the Village was great for what it was. @@captainjaber5610 i didnt want a prolonged Castle part. I wanted a better castle part. Btw the other sections had the same problem, the monsters stopped following the player....once you discover this, it become very easy and the fear is over. Re2 remake the fear was always present.
I've played almost all of them, and while the RPD is top three for me. The Spencer Mansion and the Village from RE4 far, far outstrip it in terms of quality. I thought resi 4 was leaning more into the all out action resident evils like resi 6 that are less about survival and slow pacing with loads of ammo everywhere and so on. I guess capcom will listen to the majority over the minority.
@@1222-u5r They actually already confirmed it. In fact, the project is currently having bad enough problems over where to take the game that one of the producers left. And unfortunately it was the american dude.
@@captainjaber5610 It wasn't op to par, the original comment is right.
@@captainjaber5610 I agree, the level design of the sewers and Lab is better in the remake.
The original becomes pretty linear after the police station.
Wish capcom makes more of their remakes like RE2, and RE3.
RE3 was a disappointment
Say goodbye to all that with the direction they are going with at the end of RE8, the entire series just needs to go back to horror to much action. Capcom just does not know what to do with the series.
RE4 remake 2022 just wait..
@@shloftyy Ugh I dont want to be in some European village dude we just had 8. I want them to explore more of Raccoon City. Outbreak would be lit if they took all the levels from Outbreak and gave them the RE2 Remake treatment.
@@TheInfekt all the resi fans I know: "We want outbreak remake!"
Capcom: umbrella corps, reverse, resistance... 😢
13:30 interesting that you cutaway right at the moment the player realised he can’t enter that doorway
And that is why RE9 should go in Chris route. The BSAA hq can be the next police station
@@gavinj1456 finish the game and you’ll understand what I mean
The same cannot be said how RE3 Remake turned out. But then RE2 remake had a missed opportunity of taking advantage of modern technology like including zapping system, something that Scenario A playthrough would affect the Scenario B playthrough based on your action on Scenario A
I haven’t played these games, but this video was so interesting and informative. I really enjoyed it and the video game design insight.
One of the best classics RE and the best modern RE (and the right path to continue the series for new games).
RE2 Remake was my first RE and i’m now such a huge fan of the series, one of my favorite games and gaming experiences ever
You can try also Re 1
@@serenseitcean2051 Im actually playing through it, I love the puzzles, backtracking and the setting a lot. the controls have been the only thing keeping me from finishing so far
I adore both versions of this masterpiece. But the original version just feels so precious to me. I could play it any time, any day and never feel tired of it.
Great write up by Alex Aniel 💯
Without any doubt, the greatest survival horror game and best Resident Evil game. Heck, one of the best games ever too.
I remember many games were developed to compete against Resi and know I wonder where any of them are. Resident Evil is the true KING of horror
Need more of this series
Favourite levels are the post completion unlock in Res 4 as Ada wong. If u die you u get sent straight to the beginning. Also the first area in res evil 5, still one of Favourite games to this day
The more I reflect on RE2R, the more I think it deserves a spot in my top 5 of all time games. The game is just so stunningly presented to the player alongside engaging survival horror gameplay. So good.
Once you start to get comfortable, the place feels like home in wierd way.
High quality video game content 👌 thanks IGN
Love this! More of this type of content please. Resident Evil 2 Remake is my favourite Horror game made.
X & in the finale of every other RE as well
1998: entire police department with no bathrooms
2019: one set of bathrooms for the entire building.
lol, also RIP original Leon voice actor Paul Haddad. your performance set the bar for every Resi voice actor to come.
Resident Evil 2 original is one of my favorite RE game, my favorite being Code Veronica on the Sega Dreamcast.
code veronica was beautiful it was my very first resident evil
This game is quite a masterpiece
Resident Evil 2 98 did not have an item box in the hall. Thats something the remake added by moving it from the adjacent reception room to the main hall, a change which really should have been in the original to begin with because having the typewriter that far from the item box is tedious regarding using an ink ribbon. Especially with the long door opening animation/ loading screen.
The remake wasn't perfect, but oh boy was it a great fucking game.
Very much enjoyed this!
I’m replaying this right now on my PS5 via Backwards Compatibility!
I finished RE Village last week and that experience gave me the urge to replay RE 2 Remake!
In my opinion RE 2 Remake is the greatest Survival Horror Game ever made!
RE 4 has always been my favorite of the originals and I hope RE 4 Remake is as great as
RE 2 Remake!!
Re2r is my personal favorite next to it's original with Re4 being my 3th.
RE3R had the potential to have you run around an entire city and get creative with obstacles, puzzles and setting etc. They could've easily implemented the maps in the Outbreak files and have Nemesis chased you around in them....but instead they cut content to make a 4 hour campaign for two characters to share :/
Re3 felt like a good movie, re2 felt like a movie with commercial breaks in the form of puzzles. They added nothing to the game after the 2nd one.
All that epic-ness and they still didn't give us any DLC levels or stories :/
Oh there were bathrooms in the original RPD. Nobody just ever figured out where they were in that maze, even officers who have worked there for years
Rare game where location itself became a character 🔥...
First their DF inspired performance analysis and now this 🔥🔥🔥
Survival horror is an art form and it really is perfected in RE2 RE4 RE1 and RE7 has something strong in the first castle segment and in the village.
Classic Resident Evil games are so good. The RE2 remake is a true masterpiece. I wish Capcom went on that direction.
My annoyance with the game was with the police station corridors being too dark. But when I seen it run in in 4k on pc it's better. Respect to anyone who completed it on ink ribbon saves
This was a very well made video good shit IGN
11:30 Noooo they don’t. When you’re aiming, just wait for the target reticule to shrink and your shot is more powerful.
Have you even played this game?
Edit: Nooo they don’t require “massive amounts of ammo to permanently kill”
Not sure, but since Scott Adkins' The Art of Action, I see alot more of these types of series, but I ain't complaining, it's cool as hell.
This series is a spin-off of the long-running “Art of the Scene” from CineFix IGN.
The original RE2 Police Station doesn’t have a restroom though. I’m glad they added that in the remake.
Is the narrator Mark Brown from GMTK? The voice sounds very similar.
The police station was better in every way in the remake compared to the original. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the rest of the game, which felt extremely linear thanks to the fact, there were no differences between A and B scenarios and both players visited almost the same areas...
We appreciate the hard work IGN finally becoming reliable again ‼️‼️❤️
My favorite RE.
Oh this dude needs to make a resident evil three comparison to resident evil three remake I bought the first resident evil when it came out in 1996 I bought resident evil two the day it came out in 1998 the comparison between three and three remake would be fascinating nemesis is much more dynamic in the original game if you are a new resident evil fan and never played the originals make sure you play resident evil three nemesis best stalker enemy in any game ever
You know I gave IGN a lot of criticism and shit but honestly if they chose to focus on the more video essay type contact I wouldn’t mind. This is a cool observation a dope video
"Hi. I'm Mark Brown and this... "
Wait, wrong channel.
I really hope Capcom makes more RE games in the style of RE2/RE3 remake.
I really like 7 and 8 but, I absolutely prefer the remakes.
Need more of this highlighting of greatness. Tired of “hot news” and “people crying about the industry” and “this overhyped game is coming out....”
Great video. Music seems unnecessarily loud.
Mr. X wont go down the stairs fully. If you're in that room you're good. Trust me I used to mess with him all the time with that.
seems like content that would be on a personal channel
The best game for the ps1 it’s really good even to this day it’s unique engaging dripping in detail fun exciting boss fights horror atmosphere it’s truly great
Yes!!!!! Some RE2 LOVE!!!!
Very good video. I'm looking forward to see a video where you talk about how "good" is the missing zapping system and the rushed implementation of the A,B scenarios , which makes the campaigns more repetitive than the original game.
This is the best remake ever in my opinion
Hang on... Are IGN improving? This was brilliantly put together
You know how you can sometimes go to McDonald's and get decent customer service because you happened to come on a good day when good employees are working? This is kind of like that.
This video reminds me of game makers toolkit 🤙🏾
CAPCOM should use the same formula of RE2 Remake when they are going to remake Resident Evil Code Veronica (concentrate on survival horror and use less action)
IGN suddenly become Game Maker Toolkit
My favorite RE game is probably RE7 at this point. Before that it was probably (original) RE2 or RE6.
Best resident evil game
RE2 remake is the best game in the series hands down!! One of my favorite games of all time! 💯
Mr x will always remain the best stalker & a scary ass boss
Re7 & 8 are excellent, but I prefer RE games in third person
Anyone else see what the peeps a dead by daylight have done with RCPD
One thing I’ve never understood,
how do flash bangs effect lickers being, they’re blind and all 🤷🏾♂️
High noise of the bang
I think its the sound they are quite sensible to shocks or at least I think so hahaha
I like your vids Art of the Level
10:50 Zombies break through SOME doors🚪. I’ve never had one follow me through more than one door, and I’ve replayed the remake hundreds of times.
You sound as though you work for Capcom and are trying to sell the game or you’re an IGN employee lazily appeasing people’s life choices who’ve already bought and played the game.
It’s almost annoying how elevated the diction is in this video and this game was also ported to the N64 as well
I didnt play the classics RE.
The factory was really tense playing on hardcore, great horror moments. And beneviento was very different, really cool design. The village itself was great too, loved it.
@@digiman76 How can you expect more when the design of the game was centered around the Village, hence the game’s name. It wouldn’t make sense for a prolonged Castle part, the balance between all of the areas and the Village was great for what it was. And there was a lot of opened ended stuff in the village many could miss if they didn’t pay close attention. Village easily had the most detailed design of the RE games that came out in recent years.
@@captainjaber5610 i didnt want a prolonged Castle part. I wanted a better castle part. It was too easy...the castle looked fantastic...but Dimitrescu was too easy to escape like her daughters...Mister X in Re2remake was much more scary, he would hunt the player everywhere....if you entered the Duke room, Lady D would go away....the castle looked awesome but the gameplay was weak.
Simply put, while the RPD is memorable, the Mansion and the Village represent Shinji Mikami in his prime as a game designer and how he's easily one of the best in the industry.
Resident evil 2 remake is amazing
Goat survival horror
Resi 4 and dino crisis needs a remake
RE2 ❤️
