  • Jumping is a huge problem. The "walk into them" method is a great way to fix it.

I've been doing this for years because it is literally the only way to stop the body slams. I have had Great Danes, Labs and German Shepherds over the span of my adult life, and I'm only 100#... I can't take a heavy hit like that. This works quickly!

I know this video is old but I was wondering if using your knee to counter the jump sets you off balance at all? I have bad balance and can totally see myself getting taken out like that. 😅

I’ve also had some luck giving the dog “back”. When the dog jumps at me I turn completely around and stand still until the dog settles down. Dogs don’t like to be socially shunned; often the dog will realize I don’t like this behavior.

I tried something slightly different that worked very well. When a dog jumps on me I catch their front paws with my hands. They don’t reach my leg or chest (depending on the dog’s height). Then I squeeze their paws very, very lightly, barely any pressure at all. They find this uncomfortable and pull their paws out of my hands and go back down. They jump again, I catch their paws and squeeze very lightly. They pull their paws and go back down. After a few times you can see they want to jump but they don’t because they don’t want that feeling again. I don’t do anything verbal with it, I don’t even express disapproval. They just learn in a hurry they don’t like what happens when they jump on me and they stop.

It doesn't work on fast and smart dogs.
There used to be also method to step on their back paw. I saw dog literally dancing to avoid the "smash" and still jumping.

Just think of a dog that launches into your 77-year-old mother. Well, that's exactly what almost happened to my mother from a dog I was dog-sitting. In fact, it was about to happen in front of the owner but I pretty much claimed my mother by stepping in front, waving a hand and saying ayh, ayh. The dog tried a few times more but settled when she knew it wasn't happening. (The owner has many problems with the dog but I had none. I'm not a trainer so didn't and don't feel right about giving unsolicited advice.)(except on TH-cam)
These techniques are in no way abuse. When implemented correctly, they will keep both human and canine safe and balanced.
Keep up the good work, Mr. Beckman.

My experience with my 80lb lab/maremma puppy is the same. He launches at me and others who greet him. He's a big powerful pup full of excitement and I'm a 68 yo woman. He could hurt someone. So, I've used your technique and it works wonderfully. Many of your other techniques for stopping play biting, pulling on the leash, etc work so well. And he still thinks I'm the cats pajamas 😁 Thank you!

Our girl is always jumping- something that has helped- and incredibly quickly- is having her do a lot of downs (on a leash) and having her blanket on the floor instead of the couch. So interesting how her “being in a dogs place” - the floor- has changed some of her behaviors. It’s hard for me- I want her up by me- but we are retraining her that we have to ask her up. Thanks fir ANOTHER great one Joel!

Had to come back and comment because this is the *only* thing that has helped decrease my border collie's jumping. The leash method is great in theory but you need to have your dog on a leash all day (and somehow magically know when she's going to jump so it's in your hand). Guess what, border collies are smart. Leash in hand, not going to jump. This method is perfect; she's not bothered or traumatized, I can do it in the moment or with hands full (most often it's when we come in the door), and I've seen a real decrease in the couple of weeks I've been used it. Have tried so many other methods! Thank you!!!

It’s excruciating to watch some of the people who ONLY use +R. Lacking the understanding/importance of balance & what dogs really need. Constant praise & treats, IMO, does not create a balanced dog. There also needs to be boundaries, discipline, follow through, assertiveness, consistency.

Also would be interesting to see your thoughts in getting big puppies acclimated to gentle play with children. I would love any tips for getting my terrier mix to stop jumping! She has done it since the day I met her; her foster dad let her out of the kennel, she ran up to me and jumped high enough I had to catch her. She jumps straight up in the air when I take her collar off the hook to go outside, has knocked kids down at the dog park (followed by the most obnoxious face licking 🤦🏻‍♀️). This method would work for certain jumps she does, but not others. Thanks for the amazing content! Other subscribers- appreciate the conversation!

I've been watching your videos for a long time now. It has helped a lot with my older dog. But this method is not working with my 8 months old Australian Cattle dog (female). She jumped me like a trampoline with all 4 legs once from behind, once in front when I was putting on my coat and didn't see her coming. It hurt. Normally I do the knee up and walk into her and tell her "uhuh" or no but so far it hasn't worked. I'll keep doing it of course but wish there was something else I could do so she'd stop jumping up on me and everybody else. She's so excited to meet people.

ACDs are just extremely physical dogs. There is no other breed in the world quite like them. They're so smart, but also quirky and unique. They often require training methods that are designed specifically for the breed. If your girl is anything like my dude, putting a knee up just turns it into a game...the harder you go in with the knee, the harder they come back at ya...it's a game they'll never lose.

    • @Moni-ui5bz
      @Moni-ui5bz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Chasenhaws You are so right! 😂 I had GSD's before and my old guy is supposed to be mixed GSD and ACD, so I was somewhat prepared for this girl. She's the smartest dog we've ever had. She can JUMP! I used to train with treats but with her I trained with toys and praise only and she has the most manners and listens really well. Right now we still have to work on her nipping, and although her pulling has gotten a lot better she's still doing it. She knows exactly how to behave to get even out the door, she's perfect in the driveway and now across the road to the sidewalk but after that it's a struggle. She also acts quite skittish around other dogs, even younger puppies than she is. Every day is a new experience with her. She keeps us on our toes. 😂

There is another way. I learned this from reading Brandon McMillan's "Lucky Dog". When they jump up... grab their front paws, hold on tight and walk them around. Go forward, go backward... keep doing it until they start trying to bite your hands and then go another minute. They do not like it and they learn to stop jumping on you. When you finally do let them go, say "OFF".

I'de also like to know how to solve that issue. My dog also jumps on others. Problem is that I have several neighbors who really love him and they use to appear out of nowhere and approach him just like that. Few of them even pet him when he jumps on them. I tried to explain them but they seemed to be deaf. Now my dog jumps on everyone close enough, looking at him and talking. I don't allow it, of course when he's on the leash but it happens often in the dog park when he's off leash. In the middle of a game with another dog he notices a person standing by and looking at him (or them) while talking to anyone there and he jumps. I haven't found anyone talking about it.

beckman is such a good trainer. I wish he didn't have to defend his methods constantly. No one with any experience with dogs and 2 brain cells is going to look at that method and say it's mean. At what age is this method appropriate? I did this with my old pit at about 1 year.. it worked. I now have a 6 month old puppy about 25 lbs. The jumping doesn't hurt but it needs to stop at some point. Should I wait until he's 9 months- 1 year?

Does this translate to other people? Like if I get my dog to not jump on me by doing this, will she then not jump on other people because of that or will everyone who knows her need to do that same thing with her? (Or an extension of that, if she meets a new person she'll jump on them when she first meets them)

@@Drocks027 you too? I am just at a loss. I have talked to my vet, a former vet who lives down the street, the breeder, the groomer, and friends with well behaved dogs. They have all said that is just being a puppy. He is great with them but only like this towards me. I have tried the past two days of making myself Alpha by eating first, walking through a door first, make him move if he is in my way. Hard to tell if it is working yet because he is so young but already so big. I want a well balanced happy dog. But I just keep hearing I am doing everything right.

@@Lauren-yf8op Our puppy is also big. She is part Boxer part Great Pyrneese and already 55 pounds. I would say it does get better over time. She has stopped jumping and reacting to us on walks as much. we have been doing treat training with her but since we got her at 4 months I think a lot of it is just building a relationship. The trainer in this video does say that this type of training doesn't work until 9 months so I guess we both just have to wait for a little more maturity and trying redirection in the meantime.

Puppies get hyper when overtired, it could be that they are not sleeping enough. 4-6 months still needs about 18 hrs of sleep every 24 hrs. Make sure to step towards them when they jump. Invade their space, don't let them invade yours. Keep a house line on them (old leash with loop cut off) so you can tug them off you without touching them even more. And don't push them off with your hands. Super hyper and mischievous behavior that won't stop? They go in the crate with a chew bone or stuffed Kong, or both. Time to wind down.

How do I get my dog to stop jumping on other people. She doesn’t jump on me anymore but does on others. I find it difficult to explain to them the method you suggest about moving toward them and putting a knee up. Also, she can jump from standing to 6 feet high without warning.

  • @drogon2988

I've been using my palm. I'll switch to the knee. I notice he tries to use my arm as something to hold on to or help him stay up. He hardly ever jumps though so it's hard for me to teach. I get ready for it if he gets overly excited about a certain treat.

We have a 2 year old husky that has stopped jumping on those of us in the house - but anytime a guest comes, he jumps at them. We try to anticipate it and step in whenever we can - but is there anyway we can stop the dog from doing this to guests/new folks that he meets? This happens only in the initial 5-10 minutes. After that he doesnt do it anymore. Thanks in advance.

Leash him whenever people come over. Keep him away from the door when people come over. Tug him off when he does jump. Have a friend come over to come in the door over and over to desensitize him and you can train him to calmly greet guests.
