    It’s good to watch someone training a dog who isn’t already perfect! I’m tired of watching TH-cam videos of dogs which are already doing exactly what the trainer wants rather than being shown the techniques in action with a dog which is new to it all.

      Agreed. But the challenge is the amount of time it takes to get to the end result. It's a tedious, often frustrating process and nobody has, or wants to spend time on, the 47 hours to watch the failures that lead to the success.

    It's really good to see the occasional bigger dog being worked with, it's one thing to have a small dog jumping, but a big dog jumping and pushing a person all around is a lot more intimidating. Love the videos, and excited to learn about a new raw treat to try!

    Zak I honestly can’t thank you enough but you’re ABSOLUTELY amazing. I taught my 14 week mini aussie to sit, down, stand, leave it, come, drop it, jump, free, touch, roll over, paw and so much more. When I watch your videos, it makes sense with the logic you apply to the dogs and I use your way of teaching to train my puppy. Your logic works on my little pupper and whenever I get stuck and ask myself, “Hmm, how do I stop my puppy jumping on people?” I go to your videos and apply it! I’m sure you trained hundreds of dogs and puppies and I appreciate your videos because they are so helpful. Especially when I first got my puppy at 8 weeks, there were so much to learn like crate training, potty, and etc. A lot of owners get overwhelmed and luckily your videos are a life saviour!
    Anyways, I will be applying this method for my puppy to not jump on others!

    The best tip that Zak George taught me was to NOT have your guests train your dogs to not jump. YOU have to intervene. Changed my dogs experience with guests. So many other dog trainers say to teach your guests how to respond to your dogs. Ignore bad behavior and reward good behavior. At first I would have my guests do that but my dogs still jumped. Since watching Zak George's video on this I interrupt my dogs jumping on guests and they have been able to calm themselves much faster in order to greet guests. Thanks!!!!

      Went through this jumping up problem for months, now that I've taken charge by George's advice much less of a problem. Honey my 9mo yellow lab had some worse issues, fear and aggressive responses to over stimulation ie. jumping up and attacking and biting me. If I act immediately with methods that George has taught, no blood drawn.

      Do you want to know how training my dog WITHOUT my guests help worked? I always corrected my dog when she jumped on my friends at the door and she listened (when I'm there) which took intense amount of training as her excitement made her look like she would rip through her skin from the sit position just so she can jump on people. There was a time I went to the toilet after 10 minutes of chatting when my friend arrived (initial excitement gone huh?). My dog waited until I went to the toilet then jumped all over my friend while I was gone. My GSD wants to jump on people so bad she will wait until I'm gone so she won't get told not to by me as she knows no one else will correct her. I needed my guests to be more cooperative. Now after a year of trying to establish good door manners, I've given up as she still can't control herself without me telling her not to jump. I now tell anyone who comes over, either deal with her jumping on you or YOU tell her not to. It's all of you that are the problem for encouraging her so why should I waste time and effort training her and stopping her from being her happy, excited self.

    I am getting a beagle puppy and I'm trying to watch all of your videos. I gotta say, you are the best dog trainer I have ever seen! The way you teach dogs is amazing and I feel confident that my puppy will get off on the right foot by using your training methods! Postive training makes the dog and the trainer happy; you see a lot more improvement this way too. It really does address the root of the problem. I think everyone should know about you, you make the world of dogs a better place! Thank You Zak!

    1st video that put all the responsibility on the owner. I have watched videos that teach you how to make the guests behave. Unfortunately,, the guests haven't seen any videos, so they behave inappropriately for helping the dog not to jump. I'm so glad to feel free on that and to just keep on working on sit and stay!

    I love your videos because they are like this one: it's clear that the dog is not trained, and you show some of the patience the owner has to have to train their dog. I watched one of your sit/stay videos with a small puppy, and I began to understand your philosophy. Very nice one!
    I also like that you're realistic. For instance, here you're saying what are the issues behind the dog's jumping. Those are the ones that need to be addressed, not the dog. Same for your potty training videos. They made me understand that I have to be patient. Thanks a lot!

    I will begin practicing this soon. I have a 1.5 year Pitbull rescue and she is very hyper and gets over the top excited when we come home and at night at bedtime. She learned to sit and lay within a day. I am currently working on stay and look at me. She gets a little territorial when we have visitors and very jealous if I show attention to my cats (3 - rescues as well). I made progress the last time I had a visitor by having them walk in and not make eye contact and ignoring her. She did great. Your videos have been very helpful. She knows sit, paw, touch (touches her nose to my hand) she kinda gets stay, but my biggest things right now are no biting and jumping. It’s so difficult, do u have any suggestions?

    • @carmensihota9480
      @carmensihota9480 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I think we’re going to put her in puppy training. She can’t be jumping on people and other dogs. I love her but the biting has got to stop😂 and when I scream ouch, she gets excited and starts biting more, I think she thinks I’m a chew toy LOL!

    • @therainbowram3336
      @therainbowram3336 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best thing I did with my girl was to not yelp or anything. I simply placed my hand on her muzzle and when she’d bite my hand her lip would be gently pressed on her tooth. So basically biting mommy hurts you. There was no sharp no or anything it was a natural correction. The idea that boring hands = biting me and ouchie. Not hard enough to really hurt just enough for her to be like hmmmmm

      so... this fixed the jumping? I dont think so. Any training knows that if that family left rhe house and came back in 20 mins that dog would stull be jumping. redirecting a dog attention does not teach a dog a dog to make a decision to not do a behavior. just cause the dog calmed down and he reinforced a "leave it" is not going to stop a self rewarding behavior like jumping. I used to really like Zak videos years ago, but now as a trainer I see that it seems that nothing is ever finished.

    We just adopted a 4 month old shelter dog and one of his challenges is that he gets excited and jumps on his mommy when she walks by him through a room in our house or when she walks outside if he hasn't seen her in a little while. I thought of the sit and stay as a suitable training solution to the issue, then i watched this video and now know that I'm on the correct path! He does quite well with the sit and stay so we have half of the work already done.
    Thanks again!

    Zeus reminds me a lot of my own dog Clemmy. She is a mix of German Shepherd, Border Collie and Staffordshire Bull Terrier and at three years old has only just begun to quieten down a bit. She has the same tendency as Zeus to get really overexcited quickly. We play a lot of games that make her use her mind such as hide and seek and they really help. All of the advice given by ZaK and my local dog training centre, who use the same methods as Zac, are helping but we did not begin well, and are having to undo some damage we did by allowing bad behaviour and not understanding how nervous and intelligent she was/is. just assuming that because we have always had dogs we knew what we were doing, we failed to realise that all dogs are not created the same: we are having to unlearn old training ideas and relearn new ones as we go. Anyway thanks for these videos Zak - they are wonderful.

    If someone is spending a lot of time with a new dog trying to train them, that adds up to a lot of treats, several times a day. So, that presents potential problems with weight and with them being food-obsessed. And what if you're out and about and don't have treats? Do you ignore the behavior til you can run to a store to get the treats?

      Kim N He also works with dogs who are more toy-attracted. He talks about “finding your dog’s currency” and uses very small bits of lean meats, especially with young pups. If you have your dog in public and he/she is still working on training, you will want to be prepared with a few treats or a toy!

    I am absolutely loving seeing more "imperfect" examples when showcasing how to train a dog. It's great for people who are struggling with the same thing to see an example dog having a little bit of trouble at first, and I really enjoy the encouragement of changing up what you might need to actually help teach the dog in order to get the behavior that you're looking for! I shared this video with a dog training student of mine struggling with jumping behaviors, and I think they'll get a lot out of this!

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      The key is teaching your dog to stay around things that excite them. Most people wait until they're in a situation where their dog is excited to then try to train (not a good strategy). Set up exciting scenarios frequently and in unpredictable ways during the first year of training.

    • @Germatti13489
      @Germatti13489 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes horses and dogs need your trust. Dogs need that extra assurance that you're the alpha that's going to lead the pack. Like with horses you have to set the rules. You can't play a game if you don't know the rules.

    Hey zak i need help . My dog is such a sweet dog but it's near impossible to teach him things like fetch , when i get him excited with a toy then throw it a meter or two away he takes it then runs away and if i try to get it back he gets territorial and growls at me or anyone that tries to do the same . Please help . I really want to be able to play with Rocky . And i know he would love to play fetch for he will run around with the toy in his mouth. Thanks

    • @lazypuppo
      @lazypuppo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you want to do this positively, start slow and restrict your dog from running too far away. You can either do this in a small room like a bathroom or have your dog on a leash or long line leash. Toss the tennis ball and allow your dog to get it (he should be close enough where you do not have to play the chase game). Once he has it you can do one of two things. One option would be to use another tennis ball and playfully lure your dog away from the first tennis ball. If your dog complies, say "yes" excitedly and throw ball #2. And you can interchange between balls. Having your dog restricted means he cannot run off with the ball. This will teach him better that you throwing the ball is the source of fun and "fetch" should click in his mind. The second option is to use a treat to lure your dog away from the ball. When you dog goes for the treat and leaves the ball consistently, say "leave it" and he should leave the ball alone once he gets the hang of it so you can get it before throwing again. If he has the ball in his mouth, you can do the same thing with another ball or treat and say "out" to get him to drop the toy for the reward and then you can continue to play fetch. The trick to this is not allowing him much room to get away with the ball and giving him something of equal value or better to get him to leave the ball so you can throw it again. Once he gets the hang of fetch, you can gradually expand the distance so he can start to have more fun fetching. If he starts the same bad ball hogging habit again, take a step back, and start over with your fetch training.
