Omg I absolutely love this trainers attitude. Im subscribing & sending a donation to show my appreciation! I got tired of some people criticizing me because I'm a drill Sargeant sometimes with my puppy. I got her @ 8months ( teenage stage) cause her former owners didn't know what to do with her . Within 12 days of consistent training w her she is already starting to correct her aggressive behavior & bad habits. Now I just ask people if they have ever raised a puppy after they criticize. When they respond with "no I jokingly but seriously tell them that " I don't want to hear it " cause they have no idea ( that I have to mix being sweet to her as well as a drill Sargeant. I will no longer remind people that she's a dog not a baby cause they just don't get it & I know exactly why some of their dogs are not obedient. Teaching discipline is not bullying . It's about love and respect!
@@Goddess.of.Victory I mean you should probably be a drill sergeant with your baby too... It's called socialization. Just keep it appropriate for the species you're raising. Period. An important part of loving is leading, when you're a parent or an animal owner.
Thanks for explaining that undisciplined doesn't mean the dog is bad. It means he needs more training. Discipline is the systematic transference of the teacher’s knowledge, values and self-control to the disciple, be it a dog, a student or a child.
Just got a new puppy and Googled how to train / discipline pups, and all I see is exactly what you are saying: articles that boil down to treating them as though they're baby humans. Dogs are pack animals, not humans. They want their place in our life. They need to see us as their "alpha" as we are their provider and protector. Treating them like they're humans are why people have issues with their dogs.
Indeed. I payed few Karens Who raised up my puppy to put him on their lap while they were turning from One side and do that thumb from the other side but telling me She was only holding his cheek by putting some pressure and releasing, when we GOT home we also GOT bitten. my boyfriend the second time went to the toilet, the man did and Say the same thing like the previous trainer while my boyfriend was coming back and seen him pushing his Lip in his mouth. Soon we realized that these people don't want/care to solve your problem As soon as possibile, give you bad advices and you basically ruin your dog's education. Plus they Say they use gentle methods with the dogs and then you find out that they also use those tricks, however they don't want to admit It too. Yeah, this guy does great videos and solves your problems As soon as possibile. Also Karen trainers use his methods but won't tell you, don't throw your Money in the trash with spoil and confuse your dogs Karens, keep It in your pocket.
I felt like I was going crazy watching all the other training videos and all they did was feed them copious amounts of treats and didn't solve the problem. My 16-week golden was only behaving when I had treats in my hand. If I didn't she blew me off. So glad I found your videos that actually deal with the real-life problems and disipline in an effective way.
Way late but I hired a trainer that was positive reinforcement. After a couple of sessions, my dog would misbehave to the 'fix it' to get treats. Take things, chew them, then bring them so I'd treat her. Or she would only listen when I had treats. Board and train with an actual trainer and never had to treat her to get her to listen again. Treats then became for fun tricks not for basic obedience.
Wow! My pup used to nip whenever I grabbed his collar and I came up with the same lip/thumb move you did! I used to do it all the time. It really saved my hands. It’s nice to know others are supporting it 👍🏽
@@carlosmariosuarez5319 you move their top lip between their teeth and you thumb so when they bite down their teeth touch their lip not your fingers. They don't like it and very quickly stop the habit. Giving the a gnawing toy instead helps especially when it's their baby teeth..
For anyone who wants to try this, get your dog used to collar grabs first with some food conditioning, so the collar grab isn't scary and your intent is clear. Then indoors. Then with another dog. In hindsight, I did this wrong trying this for the first time in the outdoors after my 3 month old puppy 'lost his head' and he didn't know what the hell the sensation was. In short, it made it much worse because he didn't know this sensation meant 'calm down' and he started freaking out even after 'calming down' he would come back and start nipping and biting and zooming more aggressively. This went on outside for a good 10 minutes, with him calming down then I would release and he would be even worse. Unfortunately this kind of damaged/confused our relationship for a while. It's obvious in hindsight, but I'm mentioning this in case anyone wants to try this for the first time in a challenging environment. Also, you may inadvertently create drive toward yourself or others when tension is held like this so be careful.
It is so refreshing to see someone out there giving good advice on correcting issues that don’t positively reinforce the issue. I’ve grown up with dogs my whole life and have never utilized a professional trainer before, but have more and more felt self conscious about making corrections in public (I still do) because I never know how someone who sees what I’m doing might react. Thank you very much for sharing. I have used the finger trick too. Love it.
Please don’t be self-conscious about what uneducated, ignorant dog owners think out in public when you are with your dog. On the contrary, I would recommend using the opportunity to help other dog owners understand and learn. There are so many uninformed dog guardians out there.
Yes, understood.. because so few people have the complex discernment they need to properly understand & judge both people and animals on a snapshot in time (Like when they have the poor judgment to deem a fearful dog or cat immediately "mean" in an animal shelter setting, because they don't engage their empathy to try to understand what they're experiencing.. terrible).. So the other commenter is right: these things can be opportunities to show other people proper behavior & training. (I'm a total softy in my rescue work, but I am also keenly aware of how bad behavior can become DEADLY to a dog if an incident happens- ie, a bite for instance- THEN other people would JUST as fast be demanding the "dangerous" dog be put down, quarantined, surrendered.. etc.) Personally I am also someone who would engage others that might be watching- to dispel myths, educate, etc, if you have the time), because right now the world is desperately in need of good responsible pet owners/companions (AND parents)! One of the best things I've ever heard is to raise your child to help her or him become a person that you actually LIKE..! No pun intended: but you don't want to unleash a terrible person, or a difficult dog, onto the public at large. You want them properly socialized with the ability to both be happy AND for others to be happy around them. This is part of why I've worked with animals for so many years and ALSO am a martial arts instructor for children :) GREAT video!

Thank God you posted this. I have a 4 month old Belgian Malinois German Shepherd mix that is truly a maligator. He has been here 2 weeks. Your training on loose leash walking is amazing. It took 1 day and he walks beautifully with me. I have been looking everywhere for help with this. I found similar techniques that just didn't work. The thumb with his lip? Brilliant!!! I have also had a hard time with him being to hyper with moms senior dog. This video couldn't have come at a better time thank you! More puppy videos please! This was really fun to watch. That little "allegator" is so cute, but also SO out of control! I love the "bite the own lip" technique. I had not done that but will in the future because we are thinking of getting a puppy. In the past with my other puppies what I did (and taught my kids to do too) was stick my hand/arm "further" into their mouths maybe to the point they might gag and release/turn away on their own (they didnt like it). But the "lip bite" technique is the same idea, let them decide that they don't "like" that and so stop doing that. I realize that with my prior pups/dogs we did "some" things right (teaching them to respect us, treat my younger son better), but other things we never figured out and never got right (loose leash walking for 1, I want to be sucessful with that!). We had always just had a lot of land for ourselves, and so at least an acre for dogs/kids to play/explore in, they did enjoy life, but trying to take them out into public was always a hassle and they were pretty wild. I am learning so much from these videos!! Wish I had known about you 20 years ago!
Funny you’re uploading this now because I have a 3.5 month old lab puppy who is pretty calm at home but still nippy at times & crazy hyper with other dogs. I started bringing him to play with my sisters 6 month old golden puppy every morning & we just let them go at it. They can wrestle & nip each other for over an hour. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my puppy since doing this. He’s MUCH less nippy at home & he has learned that he can bite his puppy friend, but biting humans is off limits. Granted, not all dogs will want to play that way, so that’s something we will still need to work on.
Our 10 week golden puppy is a little alligator and this video was extremely helpful. We were already letting her know she wasn't going to win the little battles but seeing more of it and seeing the part about the more dominant dog was incredibly valuable. Thanks for the great content!

Your training series are terrific and many of your methods dealing with issues are fantastic and have worked for me. I have two young dogs, an 11 month old English Labrador (9 weeks old when I got her) and an 18 month old Australian Shepherd that I rescued from the shelter when she was about 6 months old. Lots of issues with both dogs, but nothing that was uncorrectable or unusual. Both are females and terrific pals and great companion dogs. Bailey and the puppy remind me of my two.

Thank freaking god I found your channel! Spent years, always able to get along with dogs, correct dogs, and felt like I understood dog mentality. All of these constant positive reinforcers have had me questioning myself, and training methods, even just to winning that fight. People say "Oh that is sad you hold your puppy down, your going to make a mean dog.", but I know she just has puppy brain and is not even cognizant of her behavior, and it is really the only way to settle her down. Watching your videos has seriously given me relief, and my confidence back. Thank you!
They seem out of touch with reality. Other dogs literally bite into misbehaving dogs with sharp teeth so restraining and letting a dog bite itself is nothing in comparison to nature's way which is not all happy moments.
This was a great video Joel! And always wonderful to see Liz! I just discovered the lip thing after taking Roxy to the dog park. The weird thing is she plays awesomely with other dogs and puppies, but with Hurley she's on another level of aggressiveness with him.

I feel your pain...we have a 3 month old Weimaraner male puppy. He is obstinate, refuses to listen, and nothing I've ever used works with him...as a 72 year old with quite a bit of experience with training ei AKC obedience degrees, I am at a loss and frustrated. I had a teacher tell me, in my very first class with my Boxer female, that I was in for a difficult time as she smirked at us. We won 1st in our graduation, and she had a CD degree in 4 shows. Hoping I can learn some new ideas!
@@leejennifercorlewayres9193 hello! My pup just turned 1yr and is doing so much better! She is still very stubborn with some things but biting is no longer a problem! I think she grew out of it by 4 or 5 months old. Training with treats to get her to focus at first. Also taught her to interrupt tug play by saying a word and getting her attention and rewarding with a treat. Consistency in Training and in the words that you use. Also redirecting the biting towards toys when she bit my hands or feet as I was walking by. It was so bad at some point that I would cry and think that she was never going to get better! But the work paid out.. it just took a long time. Grabbing her collar or pushing her lips in (a method that makes them bite themselves and stop) did NOT work for me. It just turned it into a fight of power and she would never give up. Never. Calmness and treats and redirection worked GREAT! I hope this helps! :)
@@kathyrivera2576 hello! Hope your pup is doing better now... if not, I can suggest the things that worked best for my dog. Luckily she is food driven so I got a tasty crocodile roll (prime 100) and used it over the period of 2 or 3 months to train. She loves the training sessions and she got better at listening to commands. That together with redirecting the biting towards toys helped a lot . She is 1yr old now and although she is still obstinate and not cuddly, she is very respectful. Whenever we play "rough" I have a word to make her stop and listen. She is getting better every day:) Hope this helps!

This was very helpful. I just adopted a 12 week old Malinois mix (whose father's breed is unknown, but many have speculated St. Bernard, because he's getting BIG). We have a 10 year old, 10 pound chihuahua mix who has previously been very good about establishing boundaries with bigger dogs. However, she seems to hate the puppy and his energy, and we have grown very concerned for her safety (not due to an "attack" or anything intentionally malicious from the puppy, but just his lumbering lack of body control, size, and insane energy). My wife took the puppy to play with a rambunctious 11 month old. They had a blast, but I was worried that doing so would "reinforce" or reward the rambunctious behavior in ways that would only cause him to do it MORE with our older little dog. This video put me at ease that letting the pup play rough with another dog who wants it isn't necessarily a bad thing in terms of making him more likely to do it with dogs who don't want it. Omg, this is fantastic! I am all marked up. This isExactly what I needed help with! I will work on this! Lip move is great. He is a Goldendoodle. In the past, we have always had Rotti’s, Dobie’s, shepherds and English Mastiff’s. Never had a problem like this. Now that we are getting older and my Rotti died, we needed a dog we could control better because the others are too strong now. We ALWAYS TAKE THEM THROUGH obedience school. A lot. 3-4 times for puppy’s & however long it takes through other classes, until they obey. This is a whole new type of breed. As you’ve shown, I needed help. Thank you!

Great video as always! With my puppy I sort of did your method with having her bite herself, except for me every time she went for me I put her own paw in her mouth, so if she bit down she got the paw only. Thanks for these!
Yes. My 13 wk GSD has two huge retriever/Lab types at a neighbor’s house, we have now had 3 play dates, my boy is markedly improved the “bitey-ness” and is great meeting new dogs and ppl at PetSmart or the open street. The other big dogs are wonderful at teaching him, being gentle on him, conversely showing him he will get bitten back, sharing/stealing and “accidentally” dropping toys for him..I’m super, super grateful to my neighbor! I’m also in training w my pup at a local dog training facility, he’s doing great there too..I was getting really bummed at first with how scratched up I was getting, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! One very helpful video was a podcast with Robert Cabral and Avi, a famous German Shepherd person, and Avi said “yes, I don’t do puppies..the biting, pants nipping, show them to me in a year or two..” and I threw up my hands and said “hallelujah! This is totally normal!”
Great instructions for helping puppies outgrow their irritating bad behaviors which if not corrected will evolve into an adult dog that nobody likes being around.

Thanks, amazing vid. I have a land shark, (pointer, lab x) she is a bit higher energy than Kai. It is reassuring and helpful watching this, as this is pretty much the methods I am using to deal with this behavior. I do feel like people deem it harsh but she is strong willed, has puppy tantrums, which have to be dealt with to get her calm enough to meet dogs properly and learn to mirror their energy so she doesn't become the dog no one wants to play with. Sadly I don`t have daily access to similar energy dogs to get that full on play, but we are making progress.

Thank you for this video! We got a new 10wk old Basset Hound puppy 10 days ago and we are moving my daughter and her 2yr old Beagle/Pit Mix home in April. The dogs met the day we brought Baxter home and Lucky had to put Baxter in his place because he was all over him. Baxter is an alligator and we have been working on that but have never seen the lip move! I am encouraged by what I saw with the bigger dog putting the puppy in his place.
Best tutorial Video on introducing of a puppy to other dogs ever! my pup is an angel, he won't nip me but he'd like to jump on other dogs. I used to think it's wrong and not polite to let my 4month pup jump on other dog's face and neck and I always restrain him from doing so. But now I think it's ok to let him do it when meeting with the "right"dog who doesn't care.
Dominating a puppy like this will cause more issues down the line. You'll end up with an anxious dog that is likely prone to fight/flight. Name a social animal that accepts Alphas in the group? You can't because their a breeding pair. A dad and a mum. There has to be rules but when has hitting a kids resulted in a healthy adult. We teach our young ones with patience, rules yes, with consequences yes, but this is a pup. Basically a baby dog, it doesn't know any better. It's a rough phase, but it's just that a phase. Everyone of this guys videos it just sounds like he's making it up as he goes.
@@williamwillaims how can you compare restraining a puppy to hitting a baby? At no point in the video did he hit the puppy merely restrained it until he calmed down. This teaches patience. You can't just let you're lunge at other dogs especially ones you're unfamiliar with. And "it's just a phase" until it's not. If gone unchecked or uncorrected this behavior will continue on into adulthood. I've seen dogs never grow out of the nipping "phase" because the owners where told "they'd grow out of it".
@@williamwillaims you don't let kids get away with bad behavior either. Dogs have much shorter lifespans than humans and therefore, begin being able to understand training much younger than a newborn human baby. He is not beating or shouting at the dog. He is letting the dog teach itself the lesson it needs by letting it chew on its own lip/cheek instead of letting it chew on his hands. Teaches the puppy that it doesn't like of outcome of trying to bite, and teaches it to be gentle while playing with other dogs. He is even against shock and prong collars because he believes purposely inflicting pain make dogs worse. And dogs never learn English like a child does. So you have to get them used to what words you will be using to get them to sit, lay down, stay, etc. Proof? My dad liked using unique training words so only people who knew our family could get the dog to listen well. Stop was sit, lay down was chill, stay was hold on. Be good was come. Stuff like that
@@darkroseofshadow proove it! The dog isn't being taught anything. All its learning is not to want to be around this person. Positive training isn't the only way, but it's the fastest way to teach a dog.
@@williamwillaims your operant conditioning is a bit rusty. Positive reinforcement is the fastest way to teach a new behavior. It doesn't work to remove negative behaviors. The method employed here is not positive punishment which does have a high association with other negative behaviors.

Awesome video. I have a 7 month old pocket beagle ( 12 pounder) and look after my grandpup who is a giant lab of 95 pounds , Grandpup has taught her doggie manners . I was worried about the rough play but both know when it’s time to calm, they also play side by side dropping toys so each one has a run and chase with a particular toy.. I have learned so much watching your video . Thx so much

Hi Joel, Back ground: I'm 66 years old, 6'6" tall and have been working with my own dogs since I went through a dog training course at the ripe young age of 12 yrs old in a YMCA summer school class. I have always used I choke chain collar (loose leash, quick corrections) because that is what I learned with. Two comments, 1) I learn from every one of your videos by your methods, by reinforcement of how I train and how to change to be better. 2) I'm impressed with your use of the gentle leader collar. Two Questions: I have always trained my dogs (because my first dogs were hunting dogs and I'm right handed) to sit when I stop. Because I dont want my dog to get tangled in my legs I will do abrupt right, left and about face turns. Why do you not have dogs sit when you stop? Do you take old trainees? I retire in early 2023. THANK YOU!!! Finally a trainer that uses a REAL problem dog to show us how to deal with this. I hated leaving real comments on other trainers video's but they use dogs that are already trained or dogs that aren't wild sharks and just lightly playing that takes simple correction. I have a 10 week old GSD that is CRAZY smart. I've taught him everything you can almost think of like leaving real chicken alone, crate trained, and all the other commands and it took no longer than 15mins for him to get most anything I was training but I just didn't have the tool for the biting. I just found you and I'm so happy I did. We have a 2 1/2-month-old cream retriever who should look like your Luke. He's our 'alligator'. He is walked 3x a day - we live across a street from a school and a park which is allowed off leash during off school hours. He runs and plays with other dogs. He comes home ... sleeps. When this little sweet ball of fur wakes up - he's cujo. He wants to bite and play all the time. I am going to use your thumb in his mouth suggestion, so he bites his own lip- I do have him on a leash in the house to have better control of him. We are struggling with house training him - he could be outside in his pen 8x10 for 30 minutes comes in and pees. He's a puppy and we're hopeful that housetraining will get better. He rolls on his back and keeps biting, he is 10 weeks old today and has been biting since 9 weeks ! We are all scratched up. He has even drawn blood on me from his sharp teeth scraping me. I feel confident that I now know how to calm him down more effectively. When he gets out of control I have put him in his crate for a short time and he usually takes a nap. But he hasn’t learned to control his biting. So, again, thank you so much for making this video and teaching us what to do. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and find your information on what to focus on according to age very fascinating.
I just love your videos. My dog died recently, but I had friends with "crazy" dogs and would beg me to bring my dog over, but when I would ask them to put their dog on a leash their response was always "Your dog is the visitor, so I'm not gonna leash my own dog in my own house". I wish I would have seen your videos then. I'm hoping to get another dog soon and everything I've seen here has been so helpful!

This is great. Interesting dynamics between the dogs. There is no way I could tolerate a puppy like this one. Good for the owners to get help. I hope Bailey becomes more confident. I used to have a dog like that. He was born wild and did not get socialized until too late. I got him a puppy to help him learn and it helped a little, but he never acted like a 'normal' dog.
Most of the problems I have with puppies are corrected by my trained female GSD that isn't afraid to check some bullshit for me 😂 she trains more than I do I swear! She translates for me 🙏🏼✨ she shows them how to respect me, how to respect the pack....she just takes no shit & I'm so glad I have her 🥰
I work as a dog boarder and walker and I have a 3 month husky who is just a biter and nipper who causes other dogs to react to his overwhelming play bites. Thank you for sharing the information! ℹ️
I usually put my thumb in the mouth and I have completely forgotten to remember that this technique actually works! I have done a different correction as - “Leo sit *gives tiny treat*” then we keep walking. And this is just such a great channel.
Thank you so much for this video. Really needed it. We recently got a pitbull puppy whose mom didn't want to feed the litter since they were 5 weeks old. She is only turning 8 weeks old on 01 Aug. 2023, and we have the exact same problem at home. We have a senior miniature doberman pincher who has no problem correcting our puppy, then there is our FoxT.xJR mix who tolerates the puppy to a certain extent before correcting her. Do I keep our pitbull puppy on a leash around our mix, or do we let them sort each other out? Our puppy is also a big nipper. My fiancé and I have no problem correcting her, but it's hard to get the family on-board as we live on the same yard. Any advice on how to get the family on board with training?

@@rnguyen2516 I cudn’t either but I’m guessing he was pushing the pup’s bottom lip up and over his bottom teeth so that when the pup closed his mouth, he bit down on his own bottom lip. That’s just what I’m assuming. The camera did NOT get in a close enough shot to see anything at all and unfortunately Joel didn’t explain explicitly WHAT or HOW he was manipulating the dog’s mouth with his hand.
OMGOSH Mr. Beckman... you're so spot on.. Many years ago, I did the same finger lip bite with my pups, but never told anybody in fear they may think I was being mean. but I promise you, it was the best corrective action for nippy puppy bites...
Can you explain the method a little more? It's kinda hard to see how it's done in the video. Do move the puppy's bottom lip or top lip or both? Does it matter how? I just got a puppy that is exactly like that puppy. It's getting a little better but still having problems. I want to address it before she gets big

Omg I absolutely love this trainers attitude. Im subscribing & sending a donation to show my appreciation! I got tired of some people criticizing me because I'm a drill Sargeant sometimes with my puppy. I got her @ 8months ( teenage stage) cause her former owners didn't know what to do with her . Within 12 days of consistent training w her she is already starting to correct her aggressive behavior & bad habits. Now I just ask people if they have ever raised a puppy after they criticize. When they respond with "no I jokingly but seriously tell them that " I don't want to hear it " cause they have no idea ( that I have to mix being sweet to her as well as a drill Sargeant. I will no longer remind people that she's a dog not a baby cause they just don't get it & I know exactly why some of their dogs are not obedient. Teaching discipline is not bullying . It's about love and respect!

Thanks for explaining that undisciplined doesn't mean the dog is bad. It means he needs more training. Discipline is the systematic transference of the teacher’s knowledge, values and self-control to the disciple, be it a dog, a student or a child.
Just got a new puppy and Googled how to train / discipline pups, and all I see is exactly what you are saying: articles that boil down to treating them as though they're baby humans. Dogs are pack animals, not humans. They want their place in our life. They need to see us as their "alpha" as we are their provider and protector. Treating them like they're humans are why people have issues with their dogs.

Indeed. I payed few Karens Who raised up my puppy to put him on their lap while they were turning from One side and do that thumb from the other side but telling me She was only holding his cheek by putting some pressure and releasing, when we GOT home we also GOT bitten. my boyfriend the second time went to the toilet, the man did and Say the same thing like the previous trainer while my boyfriend was coming back and seen him pushing his Lip in his mouth. Soon we realized that these people don't want/care to solve your problem As soon as possibile, give you bad advices and you basically ruin your dog's education. Plus they Say they use gentle methods with the dogs and then you find out that they also use those tricks, however they don't want to admit It too.
Yeah, this guy does great videos and solves your problems As soon as possibile. Also Karen trainers use his methods but won't tell you, don't throw your Money in the trash with spoil and confuse your dogs Karens, keep It in your pocket.
I felt like I was going crazy watching all the other training videos and all they did was feed them copious amounts of treats and didn't solve the problem. My 16-week golden was only behaving when I had treats in my hand. If I didn't she blew me off. So glad I found your videos that actually deal with the real-life problems and disipline in an effective way.

all those treats gave it diarrhea.
Way late but I hired a trainer that was positive reinforcement. After a couple of sessions, my dog would misbehave to the 'fix it' to get treats. Take things, chew them, then bring them so I'd treat her. Or she would only listen when I had treats.
Board and train with an actual trainer and never had to treat her to get her to listen again. Treats then became for fun tricks not for basic obedience.

Wow! My pup used to nip whenever I grabbed his collar and I came up with the same lip/thumb move you did! I used to do it all the time. It really saved my hands. It’s nice to know others are supporting it 👍🏽
I used the same method and it worked and stopped the problem so quickly.

@@carlosmariosuarez5319 you move their top lip between their teeth and you thumb so when they bite down their teeth touch their lip not your fingers. They don't like it and very quickly stop the habit. Giving the a gnawing toy instead helps especially when it's their baby teeth..

For anyone who wants to try this, get your dog used to collar grabs first with some food conditioning, so the collar grab isn't scary and your intent is clear. Then indoors. Then with another dog. In hindsight, I did this wrong trying this for the first time in the outdoors after my 3 month old puppy 'lost his head' and he didn't know what the hell the sensation was. In short, it made it much worse because he didn't know this sensation meant 'calm down' and he started freaking out even after 'calming down' he would come back and start nipping and biting and zooming more aggressively. This went on outside for a good 10 minutes, with him calming down then I would release and he would be even worse. Unfortunately this kind of damaged/confused our relationship for a while. It's obvious in hindsight, but I'm mentioning this in case anyone wants to try this for the first time in a challenging environment. Also, you may inadvertently create drive toward yourself or others when tension is held like this so be careful.

It is so refreshing to see someone out there giving good advice on correcting issues that don’t positively reinforce the issue. I’ve grown up with dogs my whole life and have never utilized a professional trainer before, but have more and more felt self conscious about making corrections in public (I still do) because I never know how someone who sees what I’m doing might react.

Please don’t be self-conscious about what uneducated, ignorant dog owners think out in public when you are with your dog. On the contrary, I would recommend using the opportunity to help other dog owners understand and learn. There are so many uninformed dog guardians out there.

Yes, understood.. because so few people have the complex discernment they need to properly understand & judge both people and animals on a snapshot in time (Like when they have the poor judgment to deem a fearful dog or cat immediately "mean" in an animal shelter setting, because they don't engage their empathy to try to understand what they're experiencing.. terrible)..
So the other commenter is right: these things can be opportunities to show other people proper behavior & training. (I'm a total softy in my rescue work, but I am also keenly aware of how bad behavior can become DEADLY to a dog if an incident happens- ie, a bite for instance- THEN other people would JUST as fast be demanding the "dangerous" dog be put down, quarantined, surrendered.. etc.)
Personally I am also someone who would engage others that might be watching- to dispel myths, educate, etc, if you have the time), because right now the world is desperately in need of good responsible pet owners/companions (AND parents)! One of the best things I've ever heard is to raise your child to help her or him become a person that you actually LIKE..! No pun intended: but you don't want to unleash a terrible person, or a difficult dog, onto the public at large. You want them properly socialized with the ability to both be happy AND for others to be happy around them.
This is part of why I've worked with animals for so many years and ALSO am a martial arts instructor for children :)

Thank God you posted this. I have a 4 month old Belgian Malinois German Shepherd mix that is truly a maligator. He has been here 2 weeks. Your training on loose leash walking is amazing. It took 1 day and he walks beautifully with me. I have been looking everywhere for help with this. I found similar techniques that just didn't work. The thumb with his lip? Brilliant!!! I have also had a hard time with him being to hyper with moms senior dog. This video couldn't have come at a better time thank you! More puppy videos please! This was really fun to watch. That little "allegator" is so cute, but also SO out of control! I love the "bite the own lip" technique. I had not done that but will in the future because we are thinking of getting a puppy. In the past with my other puppies what I did (and taught my kids to do too) was stick my hand/arm "further" into their mouths maybe to the point they might gag and release/turn away on their own (they didnt like it). But the "lip bite" technique is the same idea, let them decide that they don't "like" that and so stop doing that. I realize that with my prior pups/dogs we did "some" things right (teaching them to respect us, treat my younger son better), but other things we never figured out and never got right (loose leash walking for 1, I want to be sucessful with that!). We had always just had a lot of land for ourselves, and so at least an acre for dogs/kids to play/explore in, they did enjoy life, but trying to take them out into public was always a hassle and they were pretty wild. I am learning so much from these videos!! Wish I had known about you 20 years ago!

Funny you’re uploading this now because I have a 3.5 month old lab puppy who is pretty calm at home but still nippy at times & crazy hyper with other dogs. I started bringing him to play with my sisters 6 month old golden puppy every morning & we just let them go at it. They can wrestle & nip each other for over an hour. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my puppy since doing this. He’s MUCH less nippy at home & he has learned that he can bite his puppy friend, but biting humans is off limits. Granted, not all dogs will want to play that way, so that’s something we will still need to work on.
Our 10 week golden puppy is a little alligator and this video was extremely helpful. We were already letting her know she wasn't going to win the little battles but seeing more of it and seeing the part about the more dominant dog was incredibly valuable. Thanks for the great content!

Your training series are terrific and many of your methods dealing with issues are fantastic and have worked for me. I have two young dogs, an 11 month old English Labrador (9 weeks old when I got her) and an 18 month old Australian Shepherd that I rescued from the shelter when she was about 6 months old. Lots of issues with both dogs, but nothing that was uncorrectable or unusual. Both are females and terrific pals and great companion dogs. Bailey and the puppy remind me of my two.

Spent years, always able to get along with dogs, correct dogs, and felt like I understood dog mentality. All of these constant positive reinforcers have had me questioning myself, and training methods, even just to winning that fight. People say "Oh that is sad you hold your puppy down, your going to make a mean dog.", but I know she just has puppy brain and is not even cognizant of her behavior, and it is really the only way to settle her down. Watching your videos has seriously given me relief, and my confidence back.

They seem out of touch with reality. Other dogs literally bite into misbehaving dogs with sharp teeth so restraining and letting a dog bite itself is nothing in comparison to nature's way which is not all happy moments.
This was a great video Joel! And always wonderful to see Liz! I just discovered the lip thing after taking Roxy to the dog park. The weird thing is she plays awesomely with other dogs and puppies, but with Hurley she's on another level of aggressiveness with him.

I feel your pain...we have a 3 month old Weimaraner male puppy. He is obstinate, refuses to listen, and nothing I've ever used works with him...as a 72 year old with quite a bit of experience with training ei AKC obedience degrees, I am at a loss and frustrated. I had a teacher tell me, in my very first class with my Boxer female, that I was in for a difficult time as she smirked at us. We won 1st in our graduation, and she had a CD degree in 4 shows.

@@leejennifercorlewayres9193 hello! My pup just turned 1yr and is doing so much better! She is still very stubborn with some things but biting is no longer a problem! I think she grew out of it by 4 or 5 months old. Training with treats to get her to focus at first. Also taught her to interrupt tug play by saying a word and getting her attention and rewarding with a treat. Consistency in Training and in the words that you use.
Also redirecting the biting towards toys when she bit my hands or feet as I was walking by.
It was so bad at some point that I would cry and think that she was never going to get better! But the work paid out.. it just took a long time.
Grabbing her collar or pushing her lips in (a method that makes them bite themselves and stop) did NOT work for me. It just turned it into a fight of power and she would never give up. Never.
Calmness and treats and redirection worked GREAT!

@@kathyrivera2576 hello! Hope your pup is doing better now... if not, I can suggest the things that worked best for my dog. Luckily she is food driven so I got a tasty crocodile roll (prime 100) and used it over the period of 2 or 3 months to train. She loves the training sessions and she got better at listening to commands. That together with redirecting the biting towards toys helped a lot . She is 1yr old now and although she is still obstinate and not cuddly, she is very respectful. Whenever we play "rough" I have a word to make her stop and listen. She is getting better every day:)

This was very helpful. I just adopted a 12 week old Malinois mix (whose father's breed is unknown, but many have speculated St. Bernard, because he's getting BIG). We have a 10 year old, 10 pound chihuahua mix who has previously been very good about establishing boundaries with bigger dogs. However, she seems to hate the puppy and his energy, and we have grown very concerned for her safety (not due to an "attack" or anything intentionally malicious from the puppy, but just his lumbering lack of body control, size, and insane energy).
My wife took the puppy to play with a rambunctious 11 month old. They had a blast, but I was worried that doing so would "reinforce" or reward the rambunctious behavior in ways that would only cause him to do it MORE with our older little dog. This video put me at ease that letting the pup play rough with another dog who wants it isn't necessarily a bad thing in terms of making him more likely to do it with dogs who don't want it. Thank you.

Omg, this is fantastic! I am all marked up. This isExactly what I needed help with! I will work on this! Lip move is great. He is a Goldendoodle. In the past, we have always had Rotti’s, Dobie’s, shepherds and English Mastiff’s. Never had a problem like this. Now that we are getting older and my Rotti died, we needed a dog we could control better because the others are too strong now. We ALWAYS TAKE THEM THROUGH obedience school. A lot. 3-4 times for puppy’s & however long it takes through other classes, until they obey. This is a whole new type of breed. As you’ve shown, I needed help. Thank you!
You can tell when Bailey started coming over to you shes like "man dude you got this under control, im hanging out by your side because i know you will protect me". Shows you how much being the "leader" matters.

Yes. My 13 wk GSD has two huge retriever/Lab types at a neighbor’s house, we have now had 3 play dates, my boy is markedly improved the “bitey-ness” and is great meeting new dogs and ppl at PetSmart or the open street. The other big dogs are wonderful at teaching him, being gentle on him, conversely showing him he will get bitten back, sharing/stealing and “accidentally” dropping toys for him..I’m super, super grateful to my neighbor! I’m also in training w my pup at a local dog training facility, he’s doing great there too..I was getting really bummed at first with how scratched up I was getting, but there is light at the end of the tunnel! One very helpful video was a podcast with Robert Cabral and Avi, a famous German Shepherd person, and Avi said “yes, I don’t do puppies..the biting, pants nipping, show them to me in a year or two..” and I threw up my hands and said “hallelujah! This is totally normal!”

Great instructions for helping puppies outgrow their irritating bad behaviors which if not corrected will evolve into an adult dog that nobody likes being around.

Thanks, amazing vid. I have a land shark, (pointer, lab x) she is a bit higher energy than Kai. It is reassuring and helpful watching this, as this is pretty much the methods I am using to deal with this behavior. I do feel like people deem it harsh but she is strong willed, has puppy tantrums, which have to be dealt with to get her calm enough to meet dogs properly and learn to mirror their energy so she doesn't become the dog no one wants to play with. Sadly I don`t have daily access to similar energy dogs to get that full on play, but we are making progress.

Thank you for this video! We got a new 10wk old Basset Hound puppy 10 days ago and we are moving my daughter and her 2yr old Beagle/Pit Mix home in April. The dogs met the day we brought Baxter home and Lucky had to put Baxter in his place because he was all over him. Baxter is an alligator and we have been working on that but have never seen the lip move! I am encouraged by what I saw with the bigger dog putting the puppy in his place.
Best tutorial Video on introducing of a puppy to other dogs ever! my pup is an angel, he won't nip me but he'd like to jump on other dogs. I used to think it's wrong and not polite to let my 4month pup jump on other dog's face and neck and I always restrain him from doing so. But now I think it's ok to let him do it when meeting with the "right"dog who doesn't care.

Dominating a puppy like this will cause more issues down the line. You'll end up with an anxious dog that is likely prone to fight/flight. Name a social animal that accepts Alphas in the group? You can't because their a breeding pair. A dad and a mum. There has to be rules but when has hitting a kids resulted in a healthy adult. We teach our young ones with patience, rules yes, with consequences yes, but this is a pup. Basically a baby dog, it doesn't know any better. It's a rough phase, but it's just that a phase. Everyone of this guys videos it just sounds like he's making it up as he goes.
@@williamwillaims how can you compare restraining a puppy to hitting a baby? At no point in the video did he hit the puppy merely restrained it until he calmed down. This teaches patience. You can't just let you're lunge at other dogs especially ones you're unfamiliar with. And "it's just a phase" until it's not. If gone unchecked or uncorrected this behavior will continue on into adulthood. I've seen dogs never grow out of the nipping "phase" because the owners where told "they'd grow out of it".
@@williamwillaims you don't let kids get away with bad behavior either. Dogs have much shorter lifespans than humans and therefore, begin being able to understand training much younger than a newborn human baby. He is not beating or shouting at the dog. He is letting the dog teach itself the lesson it needs by letting it chew on its own lip/cheek instead of letting it chew on his hands. Teaches the puppy that it doesn't like of outcome of trying to bite, and teaches it to be gentle while playing with other dogs. He is even against shock and prong collars because he believes purposely inflicting pain make dogs worse. And dogs never learn English like a child does. So you have to get them used to what words you will be using to get them to sit, lay down, stay, etc. Proof? My dad liked using unique training words so only people who knew our family could get the dog to listen well. Stop was sit, lay down was chill, stay was hold on. Be good was come. Stuff like that

The dog isn't being taught anything. All its learning is not to want to be around this person. Positive training isn't the only way, but it's the fastest way to teach a dog.
@@williamwillaims your operant conditioning is a bit rusty. Positive reinforcement is the fastest way to teach a new behavior. It doesn't work to remove negative behaviors. The method employed here is not positive punishment which does have a high association with other negative behaviors.

Awesome video. I have a 7 month old pocket beagle ( 12 pounder) and look after my grandpup who is a giant lab of 95 pounds , Grandpup has taught her doggie manners . I was worried about the rough play but both know when it’s time to calm, they also play side by side dropping toys so each one has a run and chase with a particular toy.. I have learned so much watching your video . Thx so much
Great video. My breeder showed me that lip move when I got Luna. Worked very quickly and Kuna stopped being a “land shark”.

I'm 66 years old, 6'6" tall and have been working with my own dogs since I went through a dog training course at the ripe young age of 12 yrs old in a YMCA summer school class. I have always used I choke chain collar (loose leash, quick corrections) because that is what I learned with.
Two comments,
1) I learn from every one of your videos by your methods, by reinforcement of how I train and how to change to be better.
2) I'm impressed with your use of the gentle leader collar.
Two Questions:
I have always trained my dogs (because my first dogs were hunting dogs and I'm right handed) to sit when I stop. Because I dont want my dog to get tangled in my legs I will do abrupt right, left and about face turns.
Why do you not have dogs sit when you stop?
Do you take old trainees? I retire in early 2023.

THANK YOU!!! Finally a trainer that uses a REAL problem dog to show us how to deal with this. I hated leaving real comments on other trainers video's but they use dogs that are already trained or dogs that aren't wild sharks and just lightly playing that takes simple correction. I have a 10 week old GSD that is CRAZY smart. I've taught him everything you can almost think of like leaving real chicken alone, crate trained, and all the other commands and it took no longer than 15mins for him to get most anything I was training but I just didn't have the tool for the biting. I just found you and I'm so happy I did. We have a 2 1/2-month-old cream retriever who should look like your Luke. He's our 'alligator'. He is walked 3x a day - we live across a street from a school and a park which is allowed off leash during off school hours. He runs and plays with other dogs. He comes home ... sleeps. When this little sweet ball of fur wakes up - he's cujo. He wants to bite and play all the time. I am going to use your thumb in his mouth suggestion, so he bites his own lip- I do have him on a leash in the house to have better control of him. We are struggling with house training him - he could be outside in his pen 8x10 for 30 minutes comes in and pees. He's a puppy and we're hopeful that housetraining will get better. Thank you for all that you do helping us puppy/dog owners.
I'm about to get a rough collie puppy and I currently have a chi hua hua and and a Yokshire X Chinese Crested Dog and this information is super interesting. I can't wait to work with my new puppy while putting in practice what you teach here.

Great video I tried this on my crazy black lab for nearly an hour ! The dogs that crazy he keep biting and even when his lips started to bleed and thought it was a big game! I’ll keep trying ,it is getting better!
Thank you so much for this video !!! That alligator puppy is almost exactly like my alligator puppy. He rolls on his back and keeps biting, he is 10 weeks old today and has been biting since 9 weeks ! We are all scratched up. He has even drawn blood on me from his sharp teeth scraping me. I feel confident that I now know how to calm him down more effectively. When he gets out of control I have put him in his crate for a short time and he usually takes a nap. But he hasn’t learned to control his biting. So, again, thank you so much for making this video and teaching us what to do. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and find your information on what to focus on according to age very fascinating.

I just love your videos. My dog died recently, but I had friends with "crazy" dogs and would beg me to bring my dog over, but when I would ask them to put their dog on a leash their response was always "Your dog is the visitor, so I'm not gonna leash my own dog in my own house". I wish I would have seen your videos then.

This is great. Interesting dynamics between the dogs. There is no way I could tolerate a puppy like this one. Good for the owners to get help. I hope Bailey becomes more confident. I used to have a dog like that. He was born wild and did not get socialized until too late. I got him a puppy to help him learn and it helped a little, but he never acted like a 'normal' dog.
Bayleigh is actually quite an agressive player at home with her housemates-a 4 yr old Aussie and a Pomeranian... she just hasn’t met many other dogs.

Most of the problems I have with puppies are corrected by my trained female GSD that isn't afraid to check some bullshit for me 😂 she trains more than I do I swear! She translates for me 🙏🏼✨ she shows them how to respect me, how to respect the pack....she just takes no shit & I'm so glad I have her 🥰

I usually put my thumb in the mouth and I have completely forgotten to remember that this technique actually works! I have done a different correction as - “Leo sit *gives tiny treat*” then we keep walking. And this is just such a great channel.

Thank you so much for this video. Really needed it. We recently got a pitbull puppy whose mom didn't want to feed the litter since they were 5 weeks old. She is only turning 8 weeks old on 01 Aug. 2023, and we have the exact same problem at home. We have a senior miniature doberman pincher who has no problem correcting our puppy, then there is our FoxT.xJR mix who tolerates the puppy to a certain extent before correcting her. Do I keep our pitbull puppy on a leash around our mix, or do we let them sort each other out?
Our puppy is also a big nipper. My fiancé and I have no problem correcting her, but it's hard to get the family on-board as we live on the same yard. Any advice on how to get the family on board with training?

@@rnguyen2516 I cudn’t either but I’m guessing he was pushing the pup’s bottom lip up and over his bottom teeth so that when the pup closed his mouth, he bit down on his own bottom lip. That’s just what I’m assuming. The camera did NOT get in a close enough shot to see anything at all and unfortunately Joel didn’t explain explicitly WHAT or HOW he was manipulating the dog’s mouth with his hand.

OMGOSH Mr. Beckman... you're so spot on.. Many years ago, I did the same finger lip bite with my pups, but never told anybody in fear they may think I was being mean. but I promise you, it was the best corrective action for nippy puppy bites...
Can you explain the method a little more? It's kinda hard to see how it's done in the video. Do move the puppy's bottom lip or top lip or both? Does it matter how? I just got a puppy that is exactly like that puppy. It's getting a little better but still having problems. I want to address it before she gets big
