Great video. Seems to leave out the one thing that this video confirms!! The designer used a pack of cigarettes as the original model/size for the Tula. What was like actually carrying this things around for 30 days!! If I have my Zoom H5, and set of DPA 4060's, I'm all precious about everything. What this seems to be great for is popping it in my pocket ALLLL the time, instead of unloading the Zoom from the case, and grabbing mics, etc. This one fits in a short pocket like a pack of cigarettes. If this was my only setup, no. But if i can grab my keys, wallet, phone, and Tula, and make good recordings on the fly, the $250 price seems totally justified!!
Yeah it was really cool to ALWAYS have a mic/recorder with me. I have a tascam recorder and it has built in mics but it’s just so…demanding. Of you’re the type of person who would benefit from having convenient recording literally in your pocket, then this is a winner.
Didn’t much like how voice sounded with the mic close to you on my headphones but I appreciate thats a personal preference. With this one I keep thinking the zoom h2n exists and that does way more for less than half the price. But i’m seeing videos saying its “swiss army knife” and things like “feature packed” for the price I don’t think it actually offers that much. Also its mono only right. I dont get it. Hype? I can see this filling a niche where you have a retro looking digital camera and you stick this on top.
I think it's about size and aesthetics. The mic is smaller than the H2N. But also, it's just nicer to have around. The Zoom is really ugly. Also, the noise reduction on Tula is pretty good, and it's written to a different file if you're recording, so you don't have to commit.
Hey Matthew, thanks for the 30 day effort. I'm hung on the final flight take. Is this where you live? I'm a traveller and just loved the view. Where is this? Thanks!
You COULD use it for that in a pinch, but it's not stereo and not super directional. It's cardioid but a shotgun mic. So I wouldn't buy it specifically for that purpose.
Field recordind, sampling, voice and nature.. . .exactly the use I was aiming it for. My expectations were very high for this mic also... but watching many reviews now... darn! it is difficult to find a self contained great field small recorders; there are a lot, but none great. In the field, the iphone is sooo bad because it is focused on voice more than anything... so I want to record nature sounds and real World sampling.... haven't found a very portable good one. Have to stick with my Zoom H5 stereo, HP filter, compressor, and with dead cat. How I wish this H5 would be 1/8 of its size. Hey Matthew, none my business but check your thyroid. My father has a very small lump in the neck also and it was thyroid overgrown because iodine wasn't being absorved correctly in his diet... he trated it and he is doing great, nothing serious if you treat it. *Delete this comment if youd like. Best!!
Hi Marco, I'm thinking of setting up a super portable podcast kit. Do you have any recommendations besides the tula? The CM-15 looks interesting (except for its price...)
@@yorgohoebeke Yeah. 1- I use the Zoom H5 with the Shotgun SGH6 with a deadcat and that's it. 2- Same H5 with the 360 capsule (the default that comes with, I believe its the XY) ... and in post, y remove excess noise. 3- if you'll have a laptop or iPad, you could buy the cheapest Focusrite Solo 3rd generation.... and use an SM57... this focusrite connects directly to iPad or Laptop. 4- iPhone mic.... but then, post is a little dull because of a lot of cleaning to do, unless you record in a silent place with no echoes. 👍 👍
@@MarcoPolux Thanks a lot for your help! I might buy something similar to the zoom h5. My goal is to not rely on PC when I'm out and about so everything should be battery powered and light. So perhaps a zoom + 2 lav mics
@@yorgohoebeke that would be ok 👍 (if you are recording just yourself, I'd go for the Zoom H5 and a portable light stand with some suspention and the Shotgun SGH6 -that mic is super versatile for many uses.... and for an ocassional interviwee, a small lava) good luck!! 👍
great video, what is that dead cat you found to be most suitable for the tula? where can I get one?
Thanks for watching! It took me awhile to find the windscreen in my orders, but here's a link (affiliate): amzn.to/43qzLrh It's under $12. :)
Thanks for the review. You're good at this.
Thanks very much!

great video! pretty sure I'm about to pick up one of these.
Thanks! They're a lot of fun!

Hi Juan and thanks for your comment! We were just visiting this location, which was Pismo Beach, CA. Yes, it’s gorgeous!
so basically you are saying this is not suitable for field recordings/nature sounds?
You COULD use it for that in a pinch, but it's not stereo and not super directional. It's cardioid but a shotgun mic. So I wouldn't buy it specifically for that purpose.
This is hands down one of the best reviews I have ever seen 🙇♂️
Wow, thanks!
Nice video
Thanks Jose!

Hey, thanks, I appreciate your concern. I did have it checked out recently as a matter of fact.
