    After about half a year of overthinking purchasing this, lense I bought it for my R7. What can I say - it´s just amazing. I have clear pictures, a fantastic zoom and no buffering. The autofocus is slightly jumpy but not more than on my EF 70-200 ii. I run the Ver. 1.0.1 on my R7, in case that helps. If there is any data I can share to help solve that problem, let me know.

    I bought this lens for my 90D and 70D bodies, and have used it on my R7. I mostly use it for stationary wildlife not so much birds in flight so the one point does work well in that regard on the R7. For hobby use I still think it is a good deal for the cost. RF glass or even EF L glass isn't cheap in the longer focal ranges for a lot of us. Yes they have some cheaper RF non L options which have sporadic reviews and hard to pinpoint if they're are worth the investment. I can deal with the out of focus shots ratios compared to the hit to my pocket book for 2500.00 + RF L glass. That's just me. So far I love the R7, the focusing system is crazy good compared to its apsc predecessors. The button layout is cumbersome coming from the previous APSC layouts but is nice to have the ability to map buttons to mostly whatever one likes. Someone will come out with a spacer for those that have bigger hands in time, but coming from battery gripped usage for over 10 years it is a little weird at times, but it is crazy light which is good for those with strength in arms issues. Great review of this combo as usual. Keep up the good work. The landscape shots were really cool!! Thanks Duade. I do wonder if the SPort version has the same issues as the Contemporary or if not as bad...?

      Thanks Tony, I totally agree and on reflection you are right that even with the AF issues it still offers exceptional value for 600mm. I think the sport version may have the same issues. Cheers, Duade

Then the R7 arrives even pricer and needs the basic converter making it expensive , perfect review and pictures from Dani. Now you've mentioned the pulsing, there is no point in a R7 as the eye tracking was the main reason for the R7, 90D it is.

    Gold finches are quite common here in Northern Europe. Many years ago, before I got into photography, I saw a flock of maybe 20 or 30 of them landing in a small oak tree some 40-50 metres away. It was about to get dark, so they obviously wanted to rest there for the night. It was autumn, so the tree had only withered brown curled-up leaves, but at least it had leaves still, where most of the bigger trees had none.
    The Goldfinch is a quite colourful little bird, so I was very surprised indeed that the moment they landed they were completely invisible!
    I didn't want to disturb them so I didn't move closer, but I was looking through a 12 x 50 pair of binoculars. At first I couldn't see them at all, but then I saw a head, then another one etc. They were all watching me! So after a few minutes I left.

    Will receive my R7 tomorrow morning and to be honest even if the eye tracking is a bit of a bust the IBIS will still help. Have been using the canon 90D for 2 years now and even though I think it's an outstanding camera, I often do miss IBIS and that is why I bought the R7.

  • @yonkoff

    Thank you very much, Duade! I was looking forward to see the first review for this very combo. I have the Sigma 150-600 C and I use it on my Canon 6D, Canon 100D and lately, on the Canon R a late buddy's wife gave me. The auto focus on 100 D is really great, but the quality still suffers from this camera's high ISO disabilities.
    So, I try to use the lens with the Canon R and the autofocus is (as I imagine) even worse than with the R5 and R6. It freezes and sometimes I have to refocus manually, so I can get some sharp shots. As you said, it struggles a lot. Similarly as on R5, on the R I can get 1.6x magnification, with losing some megapixels, but obviously it is not the greatest combo for "birding". 🙂
    This is the reason all the "cheap" photographers as myself, hope to have found the best solution with the R7 with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and asked you to do this review. At this point, I am not convinced that buying the R7 will make me happy, mainly because of it's not great low light capabilities.
    I don't know if I can wait another 3-4 years to get the improved R7 II version, so I don't really know yet what I am going to do, but I'm very glad that this review was posted exactly by you, because I like your videos and you are really, really helpful. Buying the 3000 EUR Canon RF 100-500, as far as I am still married with 2 children, is not yet an option if I don't want to sleep on the couch for the rest of my life! 😂😂
    Thanks again, you're the best!

      It is my pleasure Ivan, it still works well but you do get that inconsistent focus which is a shame. But the Eye AF of the R7 means you will likely get more keepers. It is really rough that is for sure. I hope to test out a few more lenses with it soon. Cheers, Duade

    I just got an R6 and took it out on a walk this morning to get some small birds at a wildlife refuge. I did notice the pulsing, but I must be easy to please because I still got way more sharp shots than I did with my 5D Mark IV. 😆 Small birds are very hard to grab when they land right in front of you if you don’t have a setup because they’re gone in a flash. I was impressed by how fast it grabbed the eyes.

    I’m using R7 with Sigma 150-600 C for past two years and up until now I never felt it to be unusable..I would say amazing combo.. have taken close to 45-50 thousand shots..yep pulsing happens but I find it be negligible because it’s mostly long focal lengths I shoot at..
    Only gripe I have is the weight and shakiness during handheld videos even in slow mos and IS..r7 being lighter the balance feels off with this heavy lens compared to my 5d miii which feels so fit with the lens and you don’t feel the weight like on R7
    And as always great videos by Duade..so much insight and slowly feel he is becoming more of a mentor and he made me buy RF 100-400mm lens and what an amazing purchase it has been in this last month
    Actually I have comparison shots I could share with both Sigma and Rf 100-400

    Just tested this combo for 2 days with over 1000 bird pics. When zooming in you see that most are "soft" and/or a bit out of focus. Very low keep rate. The R7+Sigma combo is constantly zooming and it sucks up your battery much much faster than the native RF lens (Needed 3 batteries for 1000 pics, many bursts). In this price range I totally prefer my Canon RF 100-400. Much much lighter, easy to shoot handheld, much sharper (compared 50-60 pics today. Same birds, same place, changed the lens). In fact the RF 100-400 is surprisingly good. Mostly better pics than my colleagues with bigger and longer lenses (at first they "laugh" at my plastic, tiny 100-400mm until they see my pics and feel the light-weight :) The only pro for Sigma is a slightly nicer and blurrier background (f6,3 vs f8).

    Thanks again for a nice video. Regarding the "groundpod" I have designed mine so that I can quickly use it with the rim facing down when the ground is uneven with stones, pebbles, roots and alike. Oriented this way it is easier to find a spot where the pod is stable. I also tend to use a ballhead to bring down weight and volume as much as possible, with the head folded it does not take much space. Cheers, Tord

    I appreciate the time and attention you've devoted to this issue. I am a huge fan of the Sigma 150-600C, which I use on a mirrorless Canon M6 Mark II for birding/wildlife. If you look at their specs, the R7 and the M6 II are very similar, with a 32 MP sensor, 15-30 fps, identical viewscreens, etc. So I'm mostly interested in the R7 because of its bird eye tracking AF. But when I wrote to Sigma Canada, they denied any problems with the R7, writing that "hunting or pulsing focus in specific instances may be caused by resolution problems with filters or misalignment from impact." Was your Sigma distributor able to provide any more information?

    There are many things I like the R7 more than the R5 - better reach, pre capture, electronic shutter sound, low weight, in camera focus stacking, better HDR still, less step to change features etc. The only real negative is the rolling shutter, it is more noticeable than R5. So it makes the pre capture feature less useful.

    I have this combo and was wondering about this. I have found it will flutter in and out and then just lose focus completely, especially when shooting close up and faced with a busy background. It also seems to struggle a bit to stay on subject if the bird is still and the background is moving in the wind etc. Thanks so much for clearing that up.
    Unfortunately it seems that there isn’t many budget options that will work well in with the newest mirrorless cameras from Canon. It would be amazing if they could open up the RF mount to third party manufacturers.

    I think it has to be time for Canon to open up the RF mount to third parties like Sigma. A mirror less version of this Len’s would be fantastic, plus they do make some excellent other glass. I had the sport version of this on the 7dMk2 and it was a great combo, however it just didn’t work as well with my R5, and damn was it heavy 😂 another great video Duade, one of the best creators on TH-cam. @@noelchignell1048 actually, I strongly believe that Canon is breaking anti-competitive laws by withholding the RF tech. They don't have to give it away either, but they should be legally required to license it to competitors at "reasonable" prices. I hope the US DOJ and the Australian ACCC goes after Canon (and NIkon). I'm about to formally complain to the ACCC about this issue. Canon, and other companies, cannot use IP to strengthen a monopoly on a market, or harm competition.
      Having only Canon being able to produce RF lenses is not good for the consumer, and imho, from a legal perspective (IANAL), breaches anti-competition laws.

    I used this lens with the RP and rarely used continous autofocus because of the focus hunting. In af-s the thing is really impressive. Image-quality-wise the lens is almost as sharp as the sony 200-600 and only loses out to it because it has a bit of purple fringing. To be honest, I never really knew what I was missing untill I upgraded to a combination that did good af-c. I still think its a very good value, and I would probably pick it over any other lens in the sub 1000 euro bracket.

      Sub 1000$ gear user here (with RP too)
      i got the RF 800 F11... i dont have the versatility of a zoom, but i am pretty good with tracking and getting flying targets in frame so im fine with fixed 800mm. The F11 gets a huge problem with not perfect light conditions anymore bcause of high ISO... but i guess for a price of 700$ 2nd hand with rest warranty i cant really complain.
      Also, the rf 800 is slightly sharper than the 150-600C sigma, no clue about the more expensive sports version.
      Since i have to crop anyways a lot at wildlife, i preffered the 800 over 150-600, also because of the price and weight/size. With 2x extender the 150-600 has a very unsharp image, the rf 800 also but not that heavy.
      The RF 800 F11 is just a awesome "point and shoot" supertele with its criminal weight for hiking and so. Im going out normally with a RF 50mm 1.8 STM on my RP and with the 800mm F11 in backpack or vice versa. A compact tripod, RF 50mm 1.8, RF 800mm and a spare battery weight still just 2kg!! And fits easily in a even smaller backpack!
      I really though a lot about the sigma 150-600mm... only because i use a EF RF filter adapter and my main lens (if i dont use RF) are 28-135mm IS USM and a macro lens, which the 150-600 would fit very nice to.
      But i also just dont like the "airpump" design. It even annoys me that much on the RF 800 F11 that i often just keep it long. Damn, even in my Backpack for up to 17" notebooks the RF 800 with EOS RP (!!!) fits easily but with extended RF 800! The less im pumping air by moving it, the less dust (or worse) i collect inside.

      If i could afford and justify for a hobby, i would take the RF 100-500L, for wildlife with 2x or 1,4x converter.
      Tested it for some minutes and i was blown away. At first i tested the RF 800 F11 which i bought... then the seller allowed me to test the replacement for his 800 lens... the 100-500L + 2x TC, and WOW! The AF is really good at the RF 800, but the 100-500 is LIGHTNING FAST and barely misses even on my RP. Image Quality is miles ahead without TC (extremely sharp for a zoom lens!) and with 2x TC at least as good as the RF 800.
      But considering this combination cost nearly 6x as much as the RF 800 F11... well no question, especially the weight and size of the 100-500+2x is already not really "handheld" optimal anymore for more than 2 minutes, the RF 800 (+RP) gives me just endless smiles when im hiking in the green searching for a good chance and enjoying the nature.

    Great review as always!! R7 works very well with R100-400mm and R1.4 or R2 teleconverter. This could be an inexpensive option. I notice a slight loss of contrast with R2, and the shutter speed would be a problem in low light for BIF. I prefer this lens to R100-500mm due to weight and being able to work across the zoom range during travel. Perhaps, sigma ef 100-400mm C with a 1.4x could be an option also. I do not remember I have an issue with the focus with R5. Unfortunately, I could not verify it with the new R7 since I gave it away. It does not work with 2x (generic teleconverter) and R5 for sure.

    I would like to point out that this pulsing issue is not unique to Sigma 150-600C or other adapted EF lenses. I just tested my R6 with native RF 50 f1.8 and adapted Sigma EF 105 f2.8. Both lenses have quite loud focus motors so the pulsing can be easily heard. And both lenses exhibit similar degrees of pulsing, more obvious at close distances like you mentioned. And taking photos while keeping continuous AF engaged resulted in shifting focus between the shoots, or in your words, soft shoots in between sharp ones.
    I believe this issue is inherent to the autofocus algorithm. Basically, the camera is doing contrast detection here. The lenses that can respond faster to the demand from camera body will be better at "hidding" the pulsing phenomenon, as they pulse faster, with smaller amplitude, thus less noticeable. But even the expensive RF L lenses are probably not completely "pulsing free". Though, I have never tested those expensive ones, so correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Liang, I suspect you are right and some lenses are more impacted by this then others. When I do the test with the RF100-500 or RF100-400 I cannot see the pulsing to the naked eye but the RF800 f11 does appear to suffer from the sharp soft sharp phenomenon I am experiencing. So it is likely the closer you get the worse it is and perhaps the type of AF motor or speed between the lens and the camera has an influence. Also of interest is the R7 appears to be worse than the R5/R6 in the inconsistent focus which may be related to a slower AF system in the R7 which exacerbates the issue? Thanks for your comment, an interesting topic for sure, Cheers, Duade

    • @liangzhao9378
      @liangzhao9378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Duade Hey Daude, I did some follow-up tests, and here are my finds.
      I have set my R6 and RF 50 1.8 completely still, towards a stationary target, then engage continuous AF. Then there is some chance that the pulsing would occur, even though nothing is moving. I have not yet figured out what factors could cause the pulsing, seems to be related to the distance. If I hand hold the R6, then there is always pulsing, no matter how hard I tried to be steady.
      However, then I repeated the test with my Nikon D500 DSLR and Nikon AFS 85 1.8 lens, and I found no pulsing behavior when both camera and target are stationary. There is even no pulsing when I hand hold the camera and try to be still (no large movement).
      Have you tested any high-end Canon EF prime lenses adapted to RF mount?

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liangzhao9378 Thanks Liang, it has to be down to the Servo mode on the mirorrless cameras and how the tracking works, like you mentioned those constant messages between camera and lens no doubt get confused at times causing the pulsing. Thanks again, Cheers, DUade

    Duade, I think the pulsing is intentional, so people buy a Canon lens. I made a TH-cam video when I was looking for something sharper than my Sigma 50-500 on my R6. I wanted the RF 100-500 but looked at the EF100-400L ii but there was little difference so I bought a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. On the 5D4 with a 2x the results were fantastic. As I wanted animal eye focus tracking and more pixels I bought an R5, I haven't had a sharp image since. Even without an extender the images are much sharper from the 5D4, so my next video with be an in depth into that.

    Excellent video, great pictures as always. Thanks a lot for taking the time to review this lens with the R7. Hope I can come to Australia one day, your vids are amazing at showing how much great fauna you guys have!
    I have been extremely happy with my R7 + sigma 150 600. The focus issues only come up in rare scenarios, and even when they do, you can almost always manage to get a couple shots in focus in a burst. But it's something that potential buyers need to know and consider if they're thinking of getting this lens for a mirrorless.
    As for me I'll hang on to the Sigma until an RF version gets released. I could never justify the price of the RF 100 500 considering how great the Sigma is for the price, and I think any of the cheaper Canon lenses would be a downgrade in one way or another (reach for the 100-400 or light/MFD/range for the 800 f11). As annoying as the AF quirks can sometimes be it's far from a deal breaker for me. Cheers

    Thanks a lot for this test! But I think the question is not so much whether you should buy this lens for the R7. It's more a question of whether you should buy the R7 for this lens. I suspect that most of the requests have come from DSLR owners who (like me) already own the Sigma 150-600 and wonder if the R7 will suit it. Amazing video as usual Duade. So lovely to hear from you. Do you know somehow if the sport version of the 150-600 is also having the same issue when it comes to tracking. I bet there's only canon options that only fully support this tracking method yet. Still, very expensives lenses we all love Sigma for it's incredible price and quality. Shame it doesn't work fully.

      Thanks John, I have not tested the Sport but I suspect it has similar issues, it is a shame the Sigma lenses have this issue. Lets hope they figure out the RF system soon. Cheers, Duade

    Thank you Duade for this beautiful video with this magnificent light at the beginning of the video and this sublime landscape! I was thinking of buying the R7 equipped with my Sigma 150-600 and using my 90D as a second camera but I'll wait... Sigma hasn't made any updates since 2019 on this lens I can understand with Canon refusing to open its RF mount to third parties ... and still no RF150-600 or 200-600 or even 200-500 IS USM at 1500 - 2000 (euros / dollars) as Nikon / Sony / Fuji do which in my opinion could sell for a lot amount ! So the R7 is only 1500 euros which is great but you have to couple it at least with the RF 100-500 which costs double to have an excellent combo...

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ludo, yes that is the dilemma at present in terms of lenses. The EF100-400 + 1.4 is also a worthy consideration but again nowhere near as affordable as the Sigma. I think many people will use the Sigma and be very happy, you still take plenty of sharp shots as I did, you just need to shoot in bursts to increase the odds of a keeper. Cheers, Duade

    As always, a great video and very informative. I have this lens and the 60-600, but accept the fact that they were not designed for new R-series MILCs. Hopefully, they will be able to come out with an RF version of these lenses. I will stick with the Rf 100-500 in the meantime. Thanks again, as always for you great presentations and common sense approach. Stunning landscapes at the start as well!!!

      @@Duade Well, I was shooting with the R5 and R6 and didn't notice the pulsing you were referring to with either lens, however I was shooting at some distance and that brought me to confirm with you something that I had wondered. You didn't SEEM to get significant pulsing at distance, but certainly it had an impact closer to your minimum focusing distance. Is that your experience?

    I love your videos Duade you get right down to the point of how you take the photos and you do a good job of it when you were taking those photos in this episode I heard a lot of clicking so are you using the electronic shutter or the mechanical shutter see I now have an R7 myself I'm trying to bear with it BUT without a vertical grip I'm having a very hard time , but I'll have it for about a week I'll give it a try if it doesn't work ( I will send it back like so many others have ) then I'll go back to my 7D Mk II which I absolutely love , love to hear from you thank you Duade great videos

    • @Duade
      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary, I use a mixture of mechanical and electronic with the R7, I find with very low SS and flighty subjects electronic is the way to go, however at higher SS and birds that aren't flighty I favour the mechanical shutter to avoid the rolling shutter. Good luck, Cheers, Duade

    Thank so much for your helpful video. The landscape photos you shot are amazing, you are really a great artist. The Sigma 150-600 ‘c’ is a good lens and best choice for beginner wildlife photographer. For focal length, not heavy, sharp and specially price. But its AF can not compare with other great zoom lenses.

    this review was highly informative and useful. Thank you very much for making this video. I was contemplating getting an R7 to use for wildlife in lieu of my 5D MKIII. Often I need more reach and the eye tracking seemed like it would be a game changer for getting more sharp shots in addition to higher resolution. Seeing that it often struggles to get focus has made me re-evaluate if this purchase makes sense.
    The sigma lens is way more affordable for a hobbyist and unless I can find a canon lens in the same ballpark, I don't know that I'll be changing bodies or lenses.

    SPOILER ALERT: Duade has received some settings (both on the lens and in camera) which seem to significantly reduce the pulsing. See Duade's YT on the R10 from September 11, or his reply to Sabyasachi about a week ago.
