    After about half a year of overthinking purchasing this, lense I bought it for my R7. What can I say - it´s just amazing. I have clear pictures, a fantastic zoom and no buffering. The autofocus is slightly jumpy but not more than on my EF 70-200 ii. I run the Ver. 1.0.1 on my R7, in case that helps. If there is any data I can share to help solve that problem, let me know.

    The light at the beginning of the video was breathtaking. Your shots were stunning. There seems to be no R7s available in the UK. Just waiting lists which is frustrating seeing all these great videos and it being at my price point. Despite the auto focus issues I think the Sigma combo will still be popular purely for price. Great video. Thank you.

    I bought this lens for my 90D and 70D bodies, and have used it on my R7. I mostly use it for stationary wildlife not so much birds in flight so the one point does work well in that regard on the R7. For hobby use I still think it is a good deal for the cost. RF glass or even EF L glass isn't cheap in the longer focal ranges for a lot of us. Yes they have some cheaper RF non L options which have sporadic reviews and hard to pinpoint if they're are worth the investment. I can deal with the out of focus shots ratios compared to the hit to my pocket book for 2500.00 + RF L glass. That's just me. So far I love the R7, the focusing system is crazy good compared to its apsc predecessors. The button layout is cumbersome coming from the previous APSC layouts but is nice to have the ability to map buttons to mostly whatever one likes. Someone will come out with a spacer for those that have bigger hands in time, but coming from battery gripped usage for over 10 years it is a little weird at times, but it is crazy light which is good for those with strength in arms issues. Great review of this combo as usual. Keep up the good work. The landscape shots were really cool!! Thanks Duade. I do wonder if the SPort version has the same issues as the Contemporary or if not as bad...?

    • @Duade

    I appreciate the time and attention you've devoted to this issue. I am a huge fan of the Sigma 150-600C, which I use on a mirrorless Canon M6 Mark II for birding/wildlife. If you look at their specs, the R7 and the M6 II are very similar, with a 32 MP sensor, 15-30 fps, identical viewscreens, etc. So I'm mostly interested in the R7 because of its bird eye tracking AF. But when I wrote to Sigma Canada, they denied any problems with the R7, writing that "hunting or pulsing focus in specific instances may be caused by resolution problems with filters or misalignment from impact." Was your Sigma distributor able to provide any more information?

    I moved from 7Dmkii to R6 even after being made aware of the focus pulse issue by one of your earlier videos. I think the pulse issue is beaten by the better sensor and quicker focusing. Yes I get soft shots as you say will happen but I think I'm getting more keepers and they are a better quality than what I got with the 7Dmkii. I have an RF50 , RF100 and a RF 24-105 and these are a real pleasure to use. Another great vid thank you. This Brit turned green with envy at that sunrise

    • @Duade
      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @yonkoff
    @yonkoff ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thank you very much, Duade! I was looking forward to see the first review for this very combo. I have the Sigma 150-600 C and I use it on my Canon 6D, Canon 100D and lately, on the Canon R a late buddy's wife gave me. The auto focus on 100 D is really great, but the quality still suffers from this camera's high ISO disabilities.
    So, I try to use the lens with the Canon R and the autofocus is (as I imagine) even worse than with the R5 and R6. It freezes and sometimes I have to refocus manually, so I can get some sharp shots. As you said, it struggles a lot. Similarly as on R5, on the R I can get 1.6x magnification, with losing some megapixels, but obviously it is not the greatest combo for "birding". 🙂
    This is the reason all the "cheap" photographers as myself, hope to have found the best solution with the R7 with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and asked you to do this review. At this point, I am not convinced that buying the R7 will make me happy, mainly because of it's not great low light capabilities.
    I don't know if I can wait another 3-4 years to get the improved R7 II version, so I don't really know yet what I am going to do, but I'm very glad that this review was posted exactly by you, because I like your videos and you are really, really helpful. Buying the 3000 EUR Canon RF 100-500, as far as I am still married with 2 children, is not yet an option if I don't want to sleep on the couch for the rest of my life! 😂😂
    Thanks again, you're the best!

    • @Duade
      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is my pleasure Ivan, it still works well but you do get that inconsistent focus which is a shame. But the Eye AF of the R7 means you will likely get more keepers. It is really rough that is for sure. I hope to test out a few more lenses with it soon. Cheers, Duade

    I just got an R6 and took it out on a walk this morning to get some small birds at a wildlife refuge. I did notice the pulsing, but I must be easy to please because I still got way more sharp shots than I did with my 5D Mark IV. 😆 Small birds are very hard to grab when they land right in front of you if you don’t have a setup because they’re gone in a flash. I was impressed by how fast it grabbed the eyes.

    I have this combo and was wondering about this. I have found it will flutter in and out and then just lose focus completely, especially when shooting close up and faced with a busy background. It also seems to struggle a bit to stay on subject if the bird is still and the background is moving in the wind etc. Thanks so much for clearing that up.
    Unfortunately it seems that there isn’t many budget options that will work well in with the newest mirrorless cameras from Canon. It would be amazing if they could open up the RF mount to third party manufacturers.

Regarding the "groundpod" I have designed mine so that I can quickly use it with the rim facing down when the ground is uneven with stones, pebbles, roots and alike. Gary, I use a mixture of mechanical and electronic with the R7, I find with very low SS and flighty subjects electronic is the way to go, however at higher SS and birds that aren't flighty I favour the mechanical shutter to avoid the rolling shutter. Good luck, Cheers, Duade

    Gold finches are quite common here in Northern Europe. Many years ago, before I got into photography, I saw a flock of maybe 20 or 30 of them landing in a small oak tree some 40-50 metres away. It was about to get dark, so they obviously wanted to rest there for the night. It was autumn, so the tree had only withered brown curled-up leaves, but at least it had leaves still, where most of the bigger trees had none.
    The Goldfinch is a quite colourful little bird, so I was very surprised indeed that the moment they landed they were completely invisible!
    I didn't want to disturb them so I didn't move closer, but I was looking through a 12 x 50 pair of binoculars. At first I couldn't see them at all, but then I saw a head, then another one etc. They were all watching me! So after a few minutes I left.

    this review was highly informative and useful. Thank you very much for making this video. I was contemplating getting an R7 to use for wildlife in lieu of my 5D MKIII. Often I need more reach and the eye tracking seemed like it would be a game changer for getting more sharp shots in addition to higher resolution. Seeing that it often struggles to get focus has made me re-evaluate if this purchase makes sense.
    The sigma lens is way more affordable for a hobbyist and unless I can find a canon lens in the same ballpark, I don't know that I'll be changing bodies or lenses.

    Just tested this combo for 2 days with over 1000 bird pics. When zooming in you see that most are "soft" and/or a bit out of focus. Very low keep rate. The R7+Sigma combo is constantly zooming and it sucks up your battery much much faster than the native RF lens (Needed 3 batteries for 1000 pics, many bursts). In this price range I totally prefer my Canon RF 100-400. Much much lighter, easy to shoot handheld, much sharper (compared 50-60 pics today. Same birds, same place, changed the lens). In fact the RF 100-400 is surprisingly good. Mostly better pics than my colleagues with bigger and longer lenses (at first they "laugh" at my plastic, tiny 100-400mm until they see my pics and feel the light-weight :) The only pro for Sigma is a slightly nicer and blurrier background (f6,3 vs f8).

      Thanks and that is a great question and I should have mentioned that in the video. It really varied depending on the amount of light as I suspect the R7 is contributing in low light. With the European Goldfinch I had 43 in focus out of 65, the Yellow-rumped Thornbill was 22 in focus out of 45. So it appears between say 50-70% of shots are in focus. Now many of those are likely user shake and other issues so not all the lenses fault. Cheers, Duade

    Nice review Duade! I did get this lens as I had been using one with my Nikon DSLR (D7500) and have enjoyed it for many years. I haven't taken it out much yet so I can't say I've seen the pulsing problem at this time. At 1/3 the cost of the Rf 100-500 it was my only option as I am a hobby photographer and most of the Canon lenses that would pair well with the R7 are just too far out of my budget. I have seen a review on the 100-400 f/8 as an inexpensive option, so I may be saving up for that next as a lightweight travel lens for birds and wildlife. Thanks again!

    Thanks for this review. Really helpful. I have had the R7 for a few weeks. The first few times I used it with my Sigma 150-600 C, I thought I must have configured the camera incorrectly. The eye tracking was amazing (especially coming from my 80D) but the focus was terribly inconsistent. Yes, that's the pulsing you talk about. I even tried it on a tripod with a taxidermied duck and when I slightly panned the camera to simulate a moving bird the autofocus still pulsed. I have taken the R7 and the Sigma 150-600 C out 6 times and I would say I only get about 15% of my shots in focus and that doesn't count the times I don't fire the shutter because the bird is so out of focus. I'm finding it super frustrating. I'm torn between getting rid of the R7 and returning to my 80D or keeping the R7 and getting the Canon 100 - 500. For me keeping the R7 and the Sigma 150-600 C is just not an option.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your experience Steve, I think there are a number of factors going on, the R7 AF is not as sticky and reliable as the R6/R5 which is to be expected for the price. In low light the R7 just doesn't seem to pick up the contrast differences as well and struggles to maintain focus sometimes. Combine that with the Sigma pulsing and it can get very frustrating. In good light the keepers should be much higher but in low light it will be a struggle. The RF lenses are better than the Sigma but I am still finding I get plenty of soft or OOF shots with the RF lenses which is just part of such a high FPS and the tracking AF of the R7. Overall though I am still able to get some lovely shots and the RF100-500 is a fantastic lens and so sharp so would be a great investment. Cheers, Duade

      @@Duade As an update, I had the opportunity to take some photos of a recently fledged Barn Swallow sitting on the wires on my deck. I used the RFS 18 - 150mm kit lens @ 150 mm from 10 yards and still had only one photo out of 9 that were in focus with the eye tracking. Then I took photos of an eyebolt on the deck at 15 meters with the single AF point and still only had 1 photo out of 11 that were sharp. So I'm returning the R7. The focus is just too inconsistent on the unit I was sent. If there is a firmware upgrade that corrects this in the future I may consider repurchasing it but for now, if the camera can't even focus consistently with the kit RFS lens, It's not for me.

    There are many things I like the R7 more than the R5 - better reach, pre capture, electronic shutter sound, low weight, in camera focus stacking, better HDR still, less step to change features etc. The only real negative is the rolling shutter, it is more noticeable than R5. I certainly hope the R7 will not have issues with the Canon 100-400ii, looking forward to your views on that combo.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is tough, I think the Eye Tracking and AF upgrade of the R7 means it is still a better option than the 90D even with the pulsing. I suspect you will get more sharp keepers with the R7 than the 90D, especially for BIF. The 100-400 will be fine and should work very well, I hope to get that lens soon to test. Cheers, Duade

    I have experienced this focus problem every day since the R7 was released. At least now I know what the problem is. Then another lens will probably be necessary in the future.

    Picked up my R7 preorder yesterday and used your code for some prograde SD cards (thanks btw). I'm liking it so far except for the warping when using electronic shutter mode. It's pretty noticable even picking up normal hand shake. Also I wish it had another dial for ISO instead of the 4way button so I don't think the ergonomics are optimal.
    Thanks for taking a look at the sigma, that sounds like it could be fixed with firmware but there's no telling if sigma even can fix it. I'm also not confident canon would make it easy to fix either.. I'll pass on that lens for now and stick to the 100-500.

      Congrats Stephen on the R7, a wonderful camera with some issues that you highlighted. I have gone to using the ISO on the dial, I think others are using exp comp on the dial also. I don't change the Aperture that often so I have that on the control ring of the lens. Cheers, Duade

    Very good review of this combination. I presently use this combination since I already had the lens. I don't know if Sigma will be able to come out with a firmware update for this issue. I understand the Tamron has the same issue. I set up my buttons so I can change from eye tracking to spot so when I see it hunting a lot, which seems to happen mostly with stationary birds, I can switch to spot mode. When I start to track another bird I press a different button. It is taking practice to learn but it appears to work for me.
    I really like the focal range and price of this lens. It isn't prefect, I would like it to be weather sealed, but I could have bought the sport version for that. I hope Sigma or Tamron start making RF mount lenses that resolve these focus issues. I could get the Canon RF 100-400mm but losing 200mm and dropping from f6.3 to f8.0 is a concession I am not willing to do at this time. Especially when I could buy a 2x and use my 70-200 f2.8 and get the same max reach at f5.6, granted a much heavier combination. As a hobbies I am going to have a hard time justifying the RF 100-500.
    I am curious what the RF100-400 works with the extenders. That lens with the 1.4x could work until Sigma or Tamron come out with a solution. Generally Sigma and Tamron deliver nice lenses at a good price.

      @Duade  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jeff, great comment and I agree. The RF100-400 works well with the 1.4 but it is getting very slow at f11. The IQ from the Sigma at 600 6.3 will likely be better I would assume, just not as good AF and IS and heavier. I agree it would be great to get an RF version. Cheers, Duade

      I don't have the Sigma but I read some comments saying the Tamron G2's pulsing is worse wherease the Sigma's is more subtle and some even say the original G1 is more stable. On my G2 using the R6, the pulsing is at its worse for smaller birds at a close distance. Duade didn't have much of an issue in his older video with the 150-600 on the R6, though I think that might be due to photographing larger birds at a farther distance. I find gulls, eagles and sometimes ducks to be more reliable for the AF than a thrush or chickadee.
      Setting One Shot may help but it seems to me the accuracy is not very good still, as if the AF can't lock in time for the pulsing to stop. Strangely, pulsing is greatly reduced when filming video, but I suspect this is using a different AF algorithm than the photo modes as it is considerably slower focusing between wide distances.
      I've been using the 800mm f11 and never really looked back. The focus acquisition can be slower but usually tracks quite well. It does occasionally seem to pulse but at least 70-80% of shots are sharp.
      I am curious how the Tamron 100-400 works with the R series.

      @@fylphotography9269 Thanks for your thoughts and feedback, yes the video AF is not as bad. I also had it worse the closer I got. I have been testing the 800 f11 and have had some issues with focus consistency also. I have more testing to do that is for sure. Cheers, Duade

    Thanks for your videos, Canon is closing third parties RF production, example Viltrox, my guess is that the Sigma autofocus issue is not a simple protocol malfunction, is a market operation. I was planing to buy R7 +Sigma 150-600 to replace my SX70HS, but change to R10 +old FD 70-200 zoom because of that, a cheaper camera while the market reject Canon policy
