@@MarioKilianPhotography I"ll tell you: In return for my giving my wife a new bathroom for Christmas, she was going to get me the Canon 70-200 f/4. But since that would be kind of redundant with my 55-250 and the 100-400 I just picked up, I believe I'll be changing my order to the Sigma Contemporary after all. From what I've read, and answers I've gotten on the Canon forums, this will be a really nice lens to go with my 1DX3. Thanks again!

Hi Juan, the D7000 with this lens will definitely work for you, you just have to consider that since the D7000 has a Crop Sensor, the relative focal length will be 220mm to 900mm, so you have to pay attention to how close you are to the Band. But I'm sure you'll get some great photos!! I'm also sure you'll be able to find a lens at a very good price. Best wishes and thanks for watching my video.

Very nice video! I really like the fact that you used the lens in so many different situations - bird photography, skateboards, an air show, street, macro, street, and the moon! The lens is as versatile as you are. Thank you so much.

Jeszcze raz dziękuję i Pozdrawiam Adam Romek. Thanks Mario for the video. As usual, I'm waiting until Friday for your video to gain the amazing knowledge you pass on. Did I understand correctly that you do birds in flight with stabilization turned off? Thanks to your videos, I am the owner of the Sigma 60-600mm and I am learning how to use this lens. Your videos inspire me to go out into the field and practice nature photography. Thanks again and best regards, Adam Romek.
Hi Adam !! like always it is nice to read you. Adam, yes, I turn the OS off when I follow the bird, it has happens that the image gets motion blur, and the image freezes in the lens and stops to follow during the pan of the camera. Also because i use a high shutter speed the os dont plays a mayor role. The 60-600 is an better lens of course. Adam have a nice weekend !!
When you take video do you use 1000 ahutter or you default to 180 degree shutter example 30 fps I would use 60 shutter. When filming birds is this proper? I just bought this lens and will pair it with canon c100 mkii to do nature videos.
Hi Gereral. Gereral, I have recorded with my old Nikon D5600 and a Nikon Z7, with both cameras I use always a shutter speed that doubles the FPS. For example, for not fast moving birds y film in 30FPS with Shutter 60, if birds are mooving an I want a more fluid video I use 60FPS with a shutter of 100 to 120. in both cases the aperture I use is 6.3, the widest the lens can at 600mm, and always with auto ISO and the OS of the lens in off. I hope this helps you. Greetings from Germany.
@@MarioKilianPhotography Thanks for the reply. I use this rule for normal video. Glad to know wildlife capture follows the same rules. Im going to shoot in 60 and slow it down in a 30 p timeline to get that slow motion. Cant wait to try my new lens.
Thank you very much Nancy. I am the grateful one, because you have taken the time to watch my video and make me a nice comment. A big hug and have a nice weekend.🥰
Daniel, I would love to be able to answer your question, but I can't. I've never used a Tamron zoom, so I can't give you a serious answer on that. The best thing is to see if there is a comparison video on TH-cam of someone who has used both lenses. A hug and good weekend.
Thank Mario for this video . Considering your experience with this lens, what is the best distance from a bird to be to have a clear photo at 550mm and aperture of f8 ? I bought this lens only one mounth ago.
Hi nice to read you !! The sharpnes is most driven by the crop you have to do, if you shot a little bird like a Wren or Blue Tit and it is for example at 50 mts, you have to crop to much to have a nice size in the frame, and that kills sharpnes. The lens has a good sharpnes no matter the distance, the landscape image are a good example. So you should consider for Birds their size, i use to take the picture so that I dont need to crop more than a 50%. For little birds in my experience i preffer not to shot if it is more than 15 mts away, and in big birds 70 mts is my limit. That of course in a full frame camera, in croped sensor 24 and 110 meters respectively. I hope it helps you, have a nice Weekend.
Found his video while researching this lense for airshows and nature photography, and you covered everything and more! This will be my fifth lense and my first super telephoto lense, so i look forward to getting to know it! Loved your video and your formatting. Consider me subscribed 😊
Thank you very much for your kind words, I am very happy to be able to help and that this video helps you make a good decision. Have a nice weekend and a big hug.
Wow, for the R5? That is undoubtedly a camera much superior to the quality of the lens. I would perhaps look at the option of the sport model, or the 60-600 model, in any case you will have to use the adapter.
Thank you for this great review. I've just ordered this lens, and can't wait to see how it behaves when paired with my BMPCC 6K G1. It'll be my first long lens, so I'm a bit nervous, esp. when used for videography.
Hi Farid !! nice to hear that, I dont have much experience with Blackmagic Gear, but when I do videos with this lens I use most the NIkon Z7, because the IBIS helps a lot to stabilize the image. At 600mm any minimal movement is a shake in the video. Let me know how the G1 works with this lens !! Big hug.
Hi Mario, love your vids. I have the canon r7, and pair it with the sigma 150-600mm lens. What are your thought on integrating a 1.4x converter with this?
Hi James !! At first thanks you for you comment !! James, the answer to you question will not be short, but i´ll try. The r7 (camera that i love, but dont own) is a croped sensor, so when you use the sigma at 600mm it is like you are using almost 900mm versus using any full frame camera, so why would you need more focal lenght? astrophotography or some constellations? the environment in where you live forces you to take photos to far away from birds? well, that could be. The converter 1.4x will made you loose 1 stop of light, also double you iso, it make works slower the AF and you have to pay a price in sharpness. Of course, if you have a sharp master primer lens, like 400 or 600 f4, you can squeeze the perfect sharpnes of this lens and use a converter, but the sigma is not a sharpnes monster, so you will notice the loos of sharpness, if you like photos of birds in flight you will also notice that the AF will be slower. Of course, if you shooting mainly static birds, the moon, stars, landscape (I love to do this wit the sigma), you can use the TC and be happy. Now, if I would own the r7 and the sigma, i would not buy the TC, with more than 30 MP image i really preffer to crop slightly the final image. And to end, once you have the TC in sight, almost no one can convince you to not buying it, and maybe you always will be anxious to buy it 😁, so if budget is not a issue go for it and discover the pros and cons for you self, if budget is somewhat an issue buy a used one, otherway dont buy one. Maybe if you had a lower pixel camera, or if you had a fast 400mm lens I woul stronger recommend you to buy one. james I hope the answer will help you. Big hugh, Mario
wow, thank you so much for such a detailed response Mario. Unfortunately, budget is a problem, and after doing some of my own research as well, I have found out exactly what you had told me already! I may experiment with a converter in the future, but as you say the crop sensor is good enough as it is, and my bird photography seems to be going really well regardless. Many thanks, James@@MarioKilianPhotography
@@jameschivers6729 I´m happy to read that James, I wish you the best Photos !! and don´t hasitate to ask if you have any question, Big hug and keep safe.
I was thinking it would be more worth it. I have a Canon R10 and I want a telephoto lens for animals. I automatically thought of the RF 100-400mm. Native and with high focusing speed in addition to the low price (in my case 600 euros). On the other hand, there is the option of the sigma 150-600 contemporary, with a higher price (800 euros) + adapter (70-100 euros). What do you think is more worth it, losing those important mm in bird photography or the focusing speed in addition to perhaps other problems you have for not being Native?
Hi David, thanks for your comment. David, I'm going to base this on my experience. First, the R10 has excellent autofocus, with bird, eye, face recognition, etc., and a really good speed. I wouldn't want to have a lens that restricts those capabilities of my camera, and in that case, I would choose the 100-400 over the Sigma + adapter. Now, something that is an even bigger issue than focal length, in my opinion, is the lens aperture. The Canon lens is f/8 at 400mm, which is quite limiting. The Sigma is f/6.3 at 600mm, and f/6 at 400mm, and that extra light stop is noticeable in wildlife photography. So, the million-dollar question: how much slower will the autofocus be with the Sigma lens? I've used the Sigma lens even on the Nikon Z7 II, and I haven't noticed any drop in speed, but I have noticed that the Sigma’s AF sometimes loses focus, and I need to refocus more than once. Second, what bothers me more: I’m more bothered by a slow lens than slow autofocus. Now, other factors come into play when making the decision, such as the environment. I live in a part of Germany where it’s cloudy with low light for 10 months of the year, so a slow lens causes me much more trouble than slow autofocus. I recommend trying both lenses, buying used gear from a trusted store, and if you don't like it, you can sell it for almost the same price and go for the other one. David, as you can see, I can't give you a definitive answer like "buy this" since so much comes into play. Take care.
@@MarioKilianPhotography Thank you very much for the quick response. Indeed I see that it is a complicated decision. Where I live the weather is good for a large part of the year, but that doesn't mean that at nightfall all places become dark. I'll see what I finally decide. Still, I hope Canon allows us to collaborate with Sigma or Tamron for their R mounts. Greetings and thanks!
Do I need some gear to hold this Sigma on tripod? I have a K&F tripod and also Manfrotto only. Is necessary something more between the tripod socket from the lens and the tripod that I use to hold my Nikon ?
Obrigado. Deu certo a fixação no tripé.

Hello Mario. Excellente explanation ! Do you use any polarizers or other screwed glass with this lens?. I just got mine this week and I'm wondering if a polarizer is needed and if it's going to slow down some stops. Hugs from Brazil !!!
Hello Tibru, thank you for your comment. Tibru, the 25 or more photos (sometimes 10 is enough) do not necessarily have to be aligned, the important thing is that the 25 photos are as sharp as possible, it does not matter if they are in the same area of the image. The photos are taken automatically by the camera itself, or otherwise, you press the shutter 25 times in a row, or you use the burst mode. Then, those photos are processed by Registax, which recognizes the moon and automatically aligns each photo, it's wonderful. A hug.
Where did you get your camo covers for this lens? Also, have you used the Sports version? I’m looking at both and can’t decide. The C is around $775 and the S $999. Wondering if it’s worth the extra money. I know the S is weather sealed which is nice.
Hi Troy, nice to meet you. Troy, the camo cover is not a traditional camo cover, it's just the camo tape. I find them more practical and I can change them from time to time. So you can see which ones I'm referring to, I'll leave you the link. amzn.to/3O2kW83 To your question about the Sport, I did indeed change to the Sport model because of the weatherproof seal, but for a very important reason; where I live it rains or snows most of the time, and I didn't want to be limited to going out to photograph only on clear days, which are the fewest. In your case, if the weather in your area is also rainy or snowy, it's a good decision. As for optics and AF, both lenses are identical in sharpness and speed according to my experience. A hug.
Hi, YES and NO !! 😁 If you thinking to take a nice Photo of the Milky way rising over the horizon and with a nice foreground, than NO, for this photos you need a 20mm to 50mm fast lens (f1.4 to f2-0). but if you thinking to take a photo of the moon, saturn, jupiter, any nebula, or the Green Comet last February, than YES you can use the Sigma and it works good, just keep in mind for dark objects to not use a too long exposure time, and if you have to it is better that you use a Sky Guider. If you use an Crop sensor camera and any extender (1,4x or 2.0x) much better. Thank you for you comment.
Hi Chungus, 500 usd is definitely a good deal. Here in Germany the used ones are from 650 to 800. Check very carefully that there is no dust inside, that there is no fungus on the optics and that of course there are no scratches on the optics, that the focus and zoom ring moves smoothly and that the contacts with the camera are in good condition. Make sure there is nothing loose inside and all the screws are in order. Good luck !!!
@@dr.chungusphd108 Hi Chungus, sorry for the delay in my response. To your question, I have never had a Tamron lens, therefore I could not give an objective opinion on the matter.

@@MarioKilianPhotography Sure! It's quite simple, actually: Just always make sure you spend more on your wife than she spends on you! 😜
Nice review! I’m thinking of getting something like this for marching band photography. This one looks affordable. I have a Nikon D7000.
Thank you for this elaborate explanation about the sigma lens 150-600 Contemporary
You welcome, and thank you so much for Sir for watching my video. I wish you a nice week.
Thanks very much from Peru
Very nice video! I really like the fact that you used the lens in so many different situations - bird photography, skateboards, an air show, street, macro, street, and the moon! The lens is as versatile as you are. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much Randall for your kind comment 🤗. Indeed, this lens makes me happy, I can use it for multiple tasks without it failing, and the results are quite good. Currently I no longer have this lens, since I changed to the Sport 60-600 version, the big difference is that the Sport version is waterproof, so I can take photographs regardless of the weather conditions. Big hug !!!

Hi Adam !! like always it is nice to read you.
Really great review in all the different locations. Thank you
you welcome Hassan, thank you for your comment.
Luiz Henrique Cesar Miné - Boa Vista/Roraima/Brasil

Hi, in regards to af reliability and accuracy would recommend tue tamron 150-600mm over the sigma?
Daniel, I would love to be able to answer your question, but I can't. I've never used a Tamron zoom, so I can't give you a serious answer on that. The best thing is to see if there is a comparison video on TH-cam of someone who has used both lenses. A hug and good weekend.

You're Welcome Albert, thank you for your nice words.
It's a very precious analysis, thank you!
Hi Tita, thank you so much for your comment, I´m happy you liked the video.
Very practical tips. Thank you!
You welcome Leventimben, thank you for your comment.

Great and helpful review. I'm likely going to purchase this lens and pair it with my Canon R5.
Wow, for the R5? That is undoubtedly a camera much superior to the quality of the lens. I would perhaps look at the option of the sport model, or the 60-600 model, in any case you will have to use the adapter.
@@MarioKilianPhotography Thanks. Ironically enough I discovered the 60-600 yesterday and am planning to purchase it instead.
Thanks Mario. I just got my Sigma today and this was a great intro video into its use. Now, I'm off to take a few thousand pictures today 😂
😄Excellent Bigdaddy, I'm very happy, I'm sure you will get very good photos!!🤗
Thank you for this great review. I've just ordered this lens, and can't wait to see how it behaves when paired with my BMPCC 6K G1. It'll be my first long lens, so I'm a bit nervous, esp. when used for videography.
Hi Farid !! nice to hear that, I dont have much experience with Blackmagic Gear, but when I do videos with this lens I use most the NIkon Z7, because the IBIS helps a lot to stabilize the image. At 600mm any minimal movement is a shake in the video. Let me know how the G1 works with this lens !! Big hug.
I really like the lens with my canon rebel t7 and the canon R7
Wow !!, two great Cameras !!, the R7 is a monster for actions !! congratulations !!!
I usually use the lens for wildlife and I’ve used for sports, and try whatever thing like Macro.

Hello Mario. Excellente explanation ! Do you use any polarizers or other screwed glass with this lens?. I just got mine this week and I'm wondering if a polarizer is needed and if it's going to slow down some stops. Hugs from Brazil !!!

How do take about 25 photos of the moon, because the moon move in the sky ? What is your techinical ?
Hello Tibru, thank you for your comment.
Tibru, the 25 or more photos (sometimes 10 is enough) do not necessarily have to be aligned, the important thing is that the 25 photos are as sharp as possible, it does not matter if they are in the same area of the image. The photos are taken automatically by the camera itself, or otherwise, you press the shutter 25 times in a row, or you use the burst mode. Then, those photos are processed by Registax, which recognizes the moon and automatically aligns each photo, it's wonderful. A hug.
@@MarioKilianPhotography Hello Mario. Thanks for this quick answer, ok I understand. I'm going to try next summer I think 🤣

So you can see which ones I'm referring to, I'll leave you the link.
amzn.to/3O2kW83
To your question about the Sport, I did indeed change to the Sport model because of the weatherproof seal, but for a very important reason; where I live it rains or snows most of the time, and I didn't want to be limited to going out to photograph only on clear days, which are the fewest. In your case, if the weather in your area is also rainy or snowy, it's a good decision. As for optics and AF, both lenses are identical in sharpness and speed according to my experience. A hug.
@ thank you for the link and happy shooting!!
Hi Mario, would you recommend this lens for Astrophotography? Thank you for you video !!
Hello. Would you consider a used but in great shape for $500 usd a good deal in 24?
Hi Chungus, 500 usd is definitely a good deal. Here in Germany the used ones are from 650 to 800. Check very carefully that there is no dust inside, that there is no fungus on the optics and that of course there are no scratches on the optics, that the focus and zoom ring moves smoothly and that the contacts with the camera are in good condition. Make sure there is nothing loose inside and all the screws are in order. Good luck !!!
@@MarioKilianPhotography thanks so much. One last question, between this and the Tamaron 150-600 which one is a better quality?
@@dr.chungusphd108 Hi Chungus, sorry for the delay in my response. To your question, I have never had a Tamron lens, therefore I could not give an objective opinion on the matter. I think the best thing is to search on TH-cam or Google for someone who has directly compared both lenses. What I can tell you is that the quality of Sigma is that I have used their lenses for more than 15 years as a secondary lens and I have never had any problems. On the other hand, when I have asked for a Firmware update, Sigma's response has been exceptional. . A hug.

Can I use this lens with EOS R6 Mark II?
Hi Paul, I have never test the R6 Mark 2 with the Sigma. With the R6M2 the focal lenght will be effective 150 to 600mm, like with my Nikon z7, and all the bennefits of the full frame sensor.....but.... The only thing is that Canon´s R5 and R6 have an focus issue called Pulsing, and the R6M2 may have it to.
