The holes in that Istanbul splash remind me of a crop circle. That’s almost enough of a reason to buy it. The fact it sounds funky certainly doesn’t hurt.

K Special Dry was my personal favorite out of these, though I will say that for a cymbal that is significantly less expensive than the other ones, the Wuhan sounds surprisingly good to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting it is as good as the K, but it's also a lot less expensive, so that's a consideration in some cases. To me, the fairly new HHX Complex sound cool with initial attack, but just a bit too 'ringy' at the decay for my tastes. Great comparison regardless in that it gave me that kind of detailed info about a diverse group of makers/models... nice!
Shades of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. I wonder which one each of them would have picked? For little old me it would be a toss up between the Zildjian K Special Dry and Paiste Signature. Hurts to admit this (because it shows how old I am) but I haven't had a splash cymbal on my kit since 1972! Nice to see splash cymbals can still be relevant. Good video as usual.
Those Wuhan Splashes are amazing for $40 splashes. I have Wuhan Western cymbals on my at home kit (Third Set) and the Med Thin and Thin Crashes are really nice. Look for Wuhan cymbal comparison on here... you'll be impressed. My favs from demo were Sabian Aero, Istanbul, and Wuhan. The dry splashes sound like tuna cans. I am a Sabian fan, but I love my Paiste Signature hats that I paid 75 bucks for!!!
Never owned a 10" splash. Back in the day, I used a 12" A Zildjian. Today I got an 8" Zildjian S. Like it good enough. If I go for a 10" I'd probably go with the Wuhan. I like the tone of the Paiste sig, it just sustains to the point of being a near-crash.
You guys are the best! You really know what drummers want and need. To me, the dual splash is probably the most unique and rich splash I’ve ever heard. Looking forward to the 8” splash version! I’m wondering if air splashes aren’t so prevalent anymore. The Aeros are great but I have a slight preference toward the air variety but see a bit less of them around.
@@adamfrost8417 Thanks! Definitely best to hear them in person, but I'm too far away. Was curious if you knew, generally, which has the higher pitch between the AIR and the AERO brands?
I own the K Custom Special Dry. I love it. I use it constantly. It pairs perfectly with my 8" Sabian B8 splash. The K is dark and lower pitched with less sustain, and the B8 is the opposite.
This comparison reinforces my love of Wuhan splashes. I have an 8, 10, 11, and 12, and they all sound fantastic. Listening to the comparison I couldn't justify spending the extra money on any other traditional sounding splash. Not an apples to apples comparion with others like the byzance dual or xist which I really like.

I have used three cymbals; 10" Paiste 602 Modern Essentials Splash, 10" Sabian AAX Air Splash, and 10" Meinl Byzance Dual Splash now. Strength 602: Warm but enough power sound in spite of Paiste famous for Rock and Metal. Air: Enough trash sound between O-zone and Aero series. Dual: Special and unique looking cymbal, but not strange and awkward. Especially great combi when drummer play Cajon or Djembe better than Candela Splash.
Thanks for doing this guys! I love splashes can’t have enough of them. I thought these were good choices although there were a few where the sustain was just too short and would not cut through the mix. One splash that I think was missing was the Paiste PSTX 10 inch Swiss splash. Absolutely love that little guy.
I have a handful of splashes, a few A customs and A’s, and a couple 10” Meinls, an Extra Dry and a Vintage trash, they sound amazing incorporated to a fill or on their own but get totally drowned out otherwise, whereas the Zildjian are less pleasing on their own but are far more prominent and sit above the mix. I like having both styles on the kit but I’d like to find one that achieves both.
Bryan Corey drums I was a Zildjan guy, until I got a 17 inch 2002. I’ll take any of their pro level cymbals over any Zil now. There’s a reason Parcaro’s, Bonham, Copland use/used em
Bubinga Basher no doubt man..... I love the red label 2002s, iconic cymbals..... I’ve never played one but maybe some day I’ll buy one.... I want a nice 20” crash!

Zildjian is pretty much garbage nowadays. No hand hammering, and the rare ability to make B20 bronze sound like shit. They just live off their name, just like Gibson and Apple
@@nocomment3600 I've never been impressed with a cymbal made by Zildjian, and I've tried out almost every cymbal made by them, as music stores are overstocked with Zildjian products. The Sabians that were stocked, sounded much better to my ear, and what little Paistes were in stock, held their own, to say the least. The few Meinl cymbals I've ever tried out in person, were nothing short of mind blowingly impressive, especially the Byzance series. But back to the main point, Zildjian does not live up to their hype. Zildjian has become some sort of cultural thing amongst drummers, and you're not "cool" if you don't play Zildjian. The same way Apple fans treat non Apple products. "it's alright, but it's not Zildjian." If I had a dollar for the amount of times I've heard drummers say that line when talking about cymbals not made by Zildjian, I'd have enough money to buy the company
In this test, it's the Paiste Signature for me; to my ears the most musical sounding and with a slightly longer sustain than most. Nice... I was also pleasantly surprised and impressed by the Dream Bliss. Not a brand I know much about, but on the basis of this clip, certainly an option! By the way, back in the 70-ies, when I was shopping for my first ever cymbals, the old and wise proprietor of my local music shop told me to ALWAYS buy cymbals with my ears, never with my eyes... meaning you can lust after that Zildjan K ride on the basis of previous experiences, your fave drummers using same, firends' opinions, etc, but it is NOT guaranteed that when you finally purchase one, you get the best ride available. Cymbals are fickle when it comes to how they end up sounding even when coming off a highly automated and accurate production line... So ALWAYS go to your music shop, close your eyes and LISTEN. Buy the one that speaks to you most, not the one you told yourself to get beforehand! The well known drummmers who truly care about their sound more than their endorsement paychecks, always seem to have a motley collection of cymbals, rather than a full house of the line of cymbals they get paid to play on... Just saying folks....
I’m a die hard paiste guy, but that meinl dual splash was unreal. Surprised there were no dark energy splashes too, I have a pair and love them, but I know there definitely one of the more popular splashes out there.
I'm also a Paiste guy, but a while back I was about to pull the trigger on a Meinl Byzance brilliant splash, they just seemed to have the perfect tone for me. Then I discovered the dark energy splashes (which incidentally sound VERY similar to the byzance) and I ended up getting the 8" and 10". My absolute favourites!
I jammed with a Nicole Mcbrain worshiper drummer 30 years ago. He was all about Tama Drums and Paiste symbols. In this video, I could see putting three or four splashes in one set-up because I'm just so surprised how they can all sound so different from each other.
So I noticed that each of these cymbals sound good. Not a bad one in the bunch. Considering the poor quality of most cymbal companies, Zildjian and Sabian for example, you must've had them send you like 20 of each type of splash. It seems today that you need to go through like 20 cymbals just to get one good one, which is why I never order cymbals online. Most of the time I play Zildjian cymbals, years ago you could order a whole set of cymbals from Zildjians and they all would be perfect. Today, if you ordered a set they would pick anything from the pile and you would be guaranteed to get a bunch of trash can lids. So if I ordered a cymbal from you would you pick me out a good one and ship that, or would you just have Zildjian send me a trash can lid?
Sabian AAX Aero Splash Cymbal 10" Brilliant was my favorite. I'm a zildjian guy but still prefer Sabian splashes, although the A Custom efx was really close.
You and I,are attracted to the same Two cymbals and in the same order of preference! I too, have always been a Zildjian fan but prefer the Sabian splashes...
@@bonsaibobby1 still haven't pulled the trigger on a replacement for my 10" A splash. But am still on the fence to the choice. Probably get an 8" and 10".
@@jeremybalzarini279 I actually own the 12" Sabian AAX aero and plan on purchasing the Sabian 10"" tonight.. One other cymbal that I like in this group is the Paiste Masters Dark... Never owned any of Paiste's line but am admittedly attracted to the 10" Masters Dark..Does it appeal to you as well?
I find that splash cymbals are a lot more musical than they used to be from years gone by. That said, they have a difficult time cutting through the mix in a live situation. I feel missing from the list, is the Paiste PST8 10 inch Swiss. It’s a great little trashy guy.
Thanks for the demo! Great to hear so many back to back. My preference is for the K Custom Special Dry. It has a quicker decay for my tastes. The Byzance Dual sounds really cool, but too trashy for my style. Next is the Xist Dry Dark; very dry and short, too much for my taste. The rest have too much sustain for my preferences.
Yah- -I'd say close to half of the ones in this video had too much sustain for me. The splashes I like hearing on records of my '80s metal bands hit hard and high and quickly go away. But that one dark symbol toward the end of the video never really hits hard cuz it just cuts out too fast so it can be too much attenuation which is as bad as too much sustain where the ladder makes it too much like a larger diameter crash cymbal.
I think for me it was between the Wuhan and the Bliss, probably favouring the Wuhan with the slightly lower tone and even sort of decay. I'm considering a new splash for my cajon set up and wondering how these may respond by being played by hands rather than sticks...
Really hard to choose but the Zildjian EFX and the Paiste signature are something else! Was also pleasantly surprised by the special dry and some of the other trashier splashes, was not expecting them to sound that full and lively! Only ones I really didn't dig were the Paiste Masters and Istanbul Dry, those tbh sounded more like washy cowbells than splashes to me. Zildjian EFX>>Paiste signature>>Zildjian special dry>>Wuhan>>Sabian AAX>>Dream Bliss>>Istanbul Xist ion>>Meinl Dual>>Meinl Vintage>>Sabian HHX>>Paiste Masters>>Istanbul Xist Dry
I absolutely love my 6” and 8” Wuhan splashes the 10” is not as good. The 6” is my favorite cymbal out of 14 cymbals I have mostly Zildjian. The 8” Wuhan is my 2nd favorite, although I wasn’t as in love with it until I put it upside down on my 16” Zildjian. But I’m looking to add something different,
As a not-a-drummer, but someone that may have access to a kit soon- - I want a high pitched in-your-face power when hit but then quickly followed with a quick attenuation. About as opposite as a dark-ride cymbal as can get. Think of 1980s heavy-metal band stuff. Vinnie Appice in the fade out to the ending of the title track from the DIO album of the same name "Dream Evil" as it's about the last symbol heard when the song completely fades out. Tssht..! Another example would be Charlie Benante, as I recall, at the end of the first verse sending the Anthrax classic "Antisocial" the song in to it's second verse: State of Euphoria album. I'll have to listen again in a few days and write down by process of elimination I think the second one shown in this video was probably the best of what I seek right off the bat first listen through.
OH MAN I came here for Splash recommendations but I love the sound of that snare. How do you get it to sound so good and cracky? I have a Ludwig Black Beauty and I struggle to make it sound this good.
Tell Manu Katche or Vinnie Colaiuta that splash cymbals aren't in vogue. There has seemed to be a trend away from them over the last decade or thereabouts, but so what? Great comparison (and playing), as always. I love most of these, especially the K Special Dry, the Dual Meinl, both Istanbuls, and both Paistes. Would love to see comparison between 8s and even 6s.
After watching this video for the second time in 2 hours, I came in put in sabian hhx in the first place also. It has a very in your face start, a nice tone and treble, and it fades quickly.
I have the byzance dual on my kit and for it being the dual line, its cuts thru everything just enough to be heard without the overtones that comes from a splash. And it almost sounds like a stack so thats a plus😂😂
that meinl byzance dual has a really interesting sound, almost like a trashy splash. i kinda dig it

1.Paiste Signature
2.Dream Bliss
3.Meinl Byzance Vintage
My favourites: Zildjian K Special Dry, Paiste Masters, Sabian HHX Complex.
Very cool video , I never knew how awesome meinl splash cymbals are. Thanks I think I might get the vintage
HHX complex hands down
Sabian AAX Aero Splash Cymbal 10" Brilliant was my favorite.
Yah-
-I'd say close to half of the ones in this video had too much sustain for me.
I now know that the combo I need in my life are the A Custom EFX and K Custom Special Dry
Sabian HHX and Paiste Masters for me even though I went with UFIP 👌
But I’m looking to add something different,
The K and HHX for me, I could flip a coin and be happy with the end results. A honorable mention was the Dream. I own a 8" Wuhan and A custom.
As a not-a-drummer, but someone that may have access to a kit soon-
- I want a high pitched in-your-face power when hit but then quickly followed with a quick attenuation.
So many good ones. For me it was both sabians, paiste signature, and that dark meinle
They’re all great ! You just got to make them sound like a million bucks .
OH MAN
I came here for Splash recommendations but I love the sound of that snare. How do you get it to sound so good and cracky? I have a Ludwig Black Beauty and I struggle to make it sound this good.
K was my fav; Dream was my least.
I usually favour Meinl - they were both good too/in my top 3 or 4.
All have there place. Good to see dream and Wuhan in the mix. I wonder how many of us chose a favourite based on brand but may not have realized it?
10 inch Meinl dual splash and 6 and 8 inch Meinl traditional splashes are my favorites everrrrrrrrr
I liked the Sabian hhx complex and the Paiste signature. Also the aero splash might be cool for something a lil different.
After watching this video for the second time in 2 hours, I came in put in sabian hhx in the first place also.
It has a very in your face start, a nice tone and treble, and it fades quickly.
I own that same wuhan splash, and it actually sounds amazing, considering how cheap it was/is

My favorite is PAISTE Signature😊
I have the byzance dual on my kit and for it being the dual line, its cuts thru everything just enough to be heard without the overtones that comes from a splash. And it almost sounds like a stack so thats a plus😂😂
Istambul Agop , the best for me .👍super.
UFIP made a 10" with a square bell. I can't remember which model it was, but it sounded beautiful.
meinl dual is by far the stand out!
