Watched it last night and I’m proud of myself that I caught the flower crown picture and the screams of Connie. Definitely believe Pele orchestrated the whole thing. I personally think she hallucinates her parents at the end when you see them in her May Queen celebration. Or you could see it as her now viewing them as her family now. So many interpretations!

Poor Simon turned into a bird with his lungs flipped as he tried to run (or “fly” away) but was kept in the chicken coop. And chickens can’t fly. That’s got to mean something right? Also never picked up that Connie was drowned until I realised she’s wearing the same weighted dress as the child in the directors cut! Amazing observation.

yep, and I figured that when pele's brother brought up that he and connie dated, to which she said that it was just one date, that it was a throwaway line, but it really shows that he wanted to bring connie and simon to the festival as sacrifices because of his jealousy that she dated simon instead of him

One important detail I caught that no one else seems to have yet, is during Christian and Dani's fight about him going to Sweden if you look in the background there is a picture of a girl with long black hair running in fear ontop of a bed of yellow flowers. I believe this is a foreshadowing of Connie running through the woods to try to escape the Harga through the entrance they came.

I think that happens because that's how a cult works. When they first arrive at the village the elder hugs Pelle, does the 'nice to meet you' stuff with Josh, Mark and Christian, but then with Dani he says "Dani! Welcome home!" The ritual sacrifices are done once every 90 years meaning Pelle’s parents wouldn’t fit in with sacrifice timeline, that being said this is definitely one of the things I would ask Ari about if I ever bumped into him. Here's something I noticed:
Dark colours are used to represent darkness while pastel colours represent hiding that darkness. In the U.S before they go to Sweden all the scenes take place in dark rooms and all of the characters wear dark clothing symbolising that they don't hide their darkness from other people. On the first day at the commune Dani wears a pastel t-shirt bc she is hiding her grief and the people in the cult are also wearing pastel bc they are hiding the true horrors of the commune from the visitors. The only places that are dark in the commune are inside the buildings because that's where the wall paintings showing the gruesome fates of the characters are.

I never got the impression that they knew Dani or knew of her. It seemed to be rather opportunistic and chance based. Pelle just happened to be the lucky one to find their new May Queen. It actually makes it that much more unsettling, knowing how arbitrary the whole process was. Something of such importance to the cultists left up to chance and opportunity. Dani was the perfect candidate.

I think it has more meaning if Dani's parents are just dead, not in any way linked to the cult. Her being targeted doesn't make it seem like it could happen to anyone. Her life's tragic, a cult preys on her because of that, and that's that, no mastermind orchestrating her entire life years before she even met Pelle. This movie has an overall theme of how easy it is for a cult to draw in members on the promise of empathy and unity and, once in, easily brainwash them to potentially commit heinous acts (i.e. torture, suicide, sacrifice, killings) for the "good" of the cult (Charles Manson). This is especially true now days when "recruiters" (Pele, and his brother) have easy pickins from a society filled with "lazy", "apathetic", "unwanted", and/or "lonely" people (I quoted these words because they are used in the movie). The movie confirms this by "recruiting" the audience in feeling "empathetically" happy for Dani in making the "decision" (was it hers or was she coerced, especially by Pele) to rid herself of those who shunned her! Is this movie propaganda for YOUR eventual indoctrination much like the initial mural that showed Dani and "friends'" reason for being there and their eventual fate?!

I noticed that any time there was an opportunity to learn anything about the Harga, it was directed toward Dani. The men in her group had to ask for information, but it was given to her freely. And when they entered the village, Odd welcomed them all, but he hugged Dani and said "Welcome home." The previous year's May queen was the one who gave Christian the drink with "special properties," and I also noticed that the brown haired girl who led Mark away was visibly upset right before the sacrifices were taken into the temple and it was burned. Her dress had small red details, but as she stood and watched the temple burn, you can see a large red piece of material that had been added to her dress.

Okay but, one detail I've never seen mentioned is the fact that the May Queen or Queen of May is originally a British(outsider) tradition. The girls already in the cult can't be the May Queen because the May Queen is a foreign mate to keep their line going, so this is all just a trick to keep their cult going.
Also interestingly, way back at the start of the May Queen tradition, rumors were spread that the May Queen was killed after the festival was over. I'm pretty sure after Dani had her child with whoever, she was killed :(.

    • @ninahettema6427

I know of no traditions where a May Queen is sacrificed, this warrants some research. Many pagan traditions, however, include a Summer King, a young man who is chosen to represent The God, who mates with The Goddess (a woman, or in a few cases, a mare) to ensure the bounty of the crops. He reigns supreme for a season, his every wish granted, then is ritually slaughtered at the time of harvest, usually Samhain. You can read about this in Thomas Tryon's terrifying novel, "Harvest Home".

But I'm speculating that since this specific group seems very insular that it's unlikely that they would keep Dani alive so it might be playing off of that particular rumor. Dani's happiness in the end will be short lived. Here's how we know: Dani is seated at the head of the table, and that is the next to be sacrificed. They say they need to bring in outsiders to prevent inbreeding, but there are no other outsiders there. There are no previous years' May Queens. There are photos of previous May Queens, but if they only have a May Queen every 90 years, there'd only be photos of 2 previous May Queens since photography has only been around for about 200 years. She will give birth to Pele's baby and then killed. I give her about NINE months until she becomes one with the big tree.

Their phone call at the beginning sounded like a phone call between a couple who'd been together a few months or a year, nowhere near a couple of 3 and 1/2 years. Him saying he didnt know he was coming over because they didnt make concrete plans? They've been together 3 and 1/2 years! This was all before her family died which showed how codependent and (sorry) how bad she was at relationships even before then, and how bad Christian was at relationships and intamacy acting like a year old boyfriend instead of an almost 4 year partner.

From the embroidery on their costumes to the murals and even the structural elements of the buildings. Well, for example, at 0:04 and at 2:46, you see Dani and Christian in the traditional dress. You’ll notice there is a diamond shape in blue that is the rune Ingwaz🔹in the Elder Futhark that represents “Seed”. They are the future generation in this ritual. Dani’s costume is the only girl’s costume with this shape. And Christian has impregnated the girl that chose him and possibly others before his death. (There are other runes within these shapes with additional meanings relating more specifically to male & female roles.)At 0:59 even the structure the group walks through is a giant Ingwaz 🔹at the back while at 1:06, from the front, the structure resembles a rising sun - hence the dawn of the new generation. I do wonder if the old couple who jumped to their deaths were perhaps once united in a previous ritual and that perhaps one day Dani and Pelle will be expected to end their lives in the same ritualized manner. There are so many, many more connections if you’ll explore the Elder Futhark runes and their meanings. It really is very fascinating.

When the old guy who jumps off the cliff first starts singing at the table, it really sounds like he's humming the theme from the shining.

dani's blow on the candle (cake slice) is the same breathing the harga does

The triangles may be a bit of a stretch. There are triangles everywhere. Any 3 points not in a line form a triangle. Any 2 intersecting lines form 2 sides of a triangle, allowing you to fill in the blanks (like the hammer example). You can look for triangles in ANY movie and find them all over the place.

yeah i agreed with this when they pointed out the hammer I was like thaaaaaats a stretch, its not an intentional triangle like the houses or the symbols

I actually thought Dani’s Parents being there was supposed to symbolize that she has found an ACTUAL family

I noticed that one of the flowers on Dani’s ‘queen’ crown seems to pulsate. The flower in question is on the left when viewing from the front and has a black centre which increase and decreases in size. Not sure what this is suppose to symbolise.

Something that struck me was Dani's outfit and head dress at the end. It reminded me of those snails that get a parasite or fungus that effectively turn them into zombies. The head dress looked like that coupled with her struggle to walk.
