    Thank you for the wonderful Odyssey videos. I thought I should try to add the fluid through the dip stick tube like you did in the video instead of removing the fill bolt so instead of a tiny funnel, I used a dollar store turkey baster and stuck my funnel with a hose into the plastic baster. The baster is clear so you can watch the fluid so you don't accidentally overfill.

    Thank you so much for a very informative video. I am DIYer myself taking care all of my cars. I saw a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX-L on a local dealer here with only 55,007 miles with all the documentations and carfax. I’m kind’a hesitant to buy any V6 Honda vehicles due to its bad reputation of the transmission especially the odyssey. But your video made me realize that it’s not bad at all as long as proper maintenance is done. I also have a 2005 Honda Accord with over 272,000 miles and still running like brand new!

      The problem with Honda is they put an external filter in and at the same time put a no maintenance required on it. Well, that filter eventually will clogged up and cause other problems. By replaced it regularly, your trans will last longer than normal.

      I have 2002 Odyssey with 251,600 miles. ATF filter replaced around 4 years ago, what interval do you recommend? Thanks!

    Nice video! I second your thoughts on wearing safety goggles. My bro was working under his vehicle when a metal chip fell into his eye. He had to go to the doctor to get it out.

      Most people don't know that there is an external filter that need to be replace, and when they replace the external filter with the after market filter, some doesn't have a filter by pass built in, so I recommended you change the external filter regularly like 1 a year and it's best to change it when you change the trans oil (1 a year). Keep the fluid looking pinkish is best for your transmission.
      The OEM filter have a bypass valve built in, when the filter clogged, the bypass is open, this cause the unfiltered oil circulate through the system that can cause the screen tubes in the shift solenoid valve to clogged up.

    When my car gets Warm up it would do a jerking feeling Only when the car gets warmed up when it's cold it shift perfectly fine From park to reverse and drive

      When the car jerk a little hard when you shift, i would first check the motor mounts.

      Got hard shift when it cold during winter month, at the time I didn't know how to fix it until Got the shifting problem on my Civic. Fix it using this technique and applied it to this odyssey and it seem to fix the hard shift problem for me.

      @True Renegade my 04 odyssey takes time before engaging into drive and sometimes doesn't shift smoothly usually from 1st to 2nd gears while in drive. Your different videos are very helpful to prevent costly repair$. 😁

    Is there a reason that you did not remove and clean the shift solenoids that reside right under the starter on the front of the transmission? Bottom one is easy to remove and the top one can be removed if you loosen the starter and tilt it up - you don't have to remove it.

      I only go after the one that have a screen tubes for cleaning maintenance, all others have just a rubber o-ring, if failed (unless the o-ring is leaking) you will need to replace the whole sensor.

    Did you experience when you shift the gear from park to reverse and felt sudden thug in the tranny when the engine is still cold? It happened only in reverse (cold start only higher than 1000rpm) ,no problem at normal temperature (700-750 rpm).thanks

      Check for bad motor mounts when you hear a thug sound when shifting from park to reverse.

    Thank you very much for the video. I'm hearing a whining noise until the Odyssey warms up. I noticed some delay in drive engaging after backing up when starting from cold engine/transmission. I wonder if it is too late for this maintenance to help? I love this vehicle and hope the transmission has not gone bad.

      1. Investigate the whining noise by using a Mechanic's Stethoscope like the one in the link below or using a long screw driver and place one end to the area/part where you think the noise coming from, the other end to your ear. The area/part with the loudest noise is the one may need to be replace. I did this around the area of the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, fuel injectors and accidentally touch the Purge Solenoid Valve and discovered the clicking noise led to my very first You Tube video.

      2. For the longest time, I been added transmission fluid about 1/2 quart above the full line due to hard shifting until I discovered that there is an external filter on this Odyssey (Not all model will have this external filter). After I replaced the filter and clean out the screen tubes on the 2 shift solenoid valves in this video, My transmission no longer hard shift and I don't have to over fill the fluid level. In your case, I would change the Transmission filter first or do both (Filter and Shift Solenoids if you have time) to see if it help. If you take it to the transmission shop, they will do an "overhaul" your transmission.
      3. Use Honda Transmission fluid. Some of my friends experience hard shifting using the after market transmission fluid.

      @@joseleon6522 I think the shift solenoid was clog/dirty to the point that I experience hard shifting in reverse. This could be just the filter clogged up. When the filter clogged up, it open the bypass valve in the filter sending dirty oil through the transmission system, this will cause the screen tubes in the shift solenoids valve to get clog or dirty. Here is my opinion on this after I done this maintenance OK?
      If your vehicle have shifting problem (my had a hard shifting in reverse), than replace the filter and clean the shift solenoid valves like I show you in this video. My Odyssey now doesn't have a hard shifting in reverse any more. Since I'm not replace the filter with the OEM filter and I don't even know if the after market filter have a build in by pass valve. to be safe, I decided to replace the filter and change the fluid every year. This will ensure the filter not clog up and it keep the fluid nice and pink.

      He didn't replace the solenoid valve. He replace the screen with the rubber gasket. If the screen dirty, it can cause shifting problem.

      @@zulmaramirez8153 that telling you that you need to have your transmission check out. I can be as simple as low fluid level, bad connection to or bad solenoid valve.

      1. It's over 100k miles when I discovered it got an external filter. So it's about to change it.
      2. It had a hard shifting problem from Park to Reverse, and sometimes delay in shifting on the highway.
      If you wants your trans to last longer, then do this maintenance when ever the fluid is no longer Pink .
      Once you done this maintenance as shown in this video (clean all the screen tubes in the shift solenoids), all following maintenance after, you just need to change just the filter unless you encounter shifting problem. Good luck!!!

      @@Alex_Rodrigez Do the maintenance in this video to see if it help. When you don't change the filter, and when it got clogged up, the bypass valve in the filter will open allowing all unfilter fluid through the system and eventually, it clogged up those screen tubes in the solenoid valves and causing shifting problem. Or you can take it to the transmission shop and they will rebuild your transmission which is costly.
