  • Honda Odyssey - BYBA Transmission - Teardown Inspection.
On this video we see the basic teardown of a 5 speed Honda - Acura Transmission.
This transmission looked in an okay, so to speak, condition. This transmission had the common no movement condition that is the result of a restricted filter. What we see here in this unit is very fine metal contamination but it looks a little bit clean.
This is the reality of some shops that give a very low price just to get the job in and end up with this scenario. We call this "flat rate" or "patch build". The same torque converter was used which is a Big NO-NO on a honda - acura transmission since it is a very common failure item.

I had heard so many complaints about the Honda transmissions in general, and the Odyssey in particular. I've watched some other TH-cam videos of guys replacing the solenoids, but your tear-down and analysis was a complete eye-opener. You just dissected the beast and exposed the shoddy band-aid work of the other shop, and were spot-on about the torque converter not being touched, and just leading to the same failure eventually--wow, you are the Jedi master of transmissions!!

Ever notice how the good mechanics don't beg people to "Hit that like button!" and "Subscribe"?

Hiram, why you don't record a video about a 41te. With so many minivans and other cars with those out there, there is not even 1 decent video about this popular transmission. If you do I would even buy the video from you. I bet a whole bunch of people would pay for the download also. Think about it. Gracias!!

I have a 2000 Odyssey which had a recently rebuilt transmission when I bought it 2 years ago. Now with just 20K miles, it has a "shutter" when under load, usually at high speeds, around 60 mph. I took it back to the shop that rebuilt it, and they changed the fluid, and said that "might" fix the problem. It did not. He said it might be the torque converter. The warranty was only for a year. Any ideas? Maybe he told me that because he knows he did not change the torque converter when he rebuilt the trans; I am assuming he rebuilt it as cheap as possible so the owner could sell the van ... I don't think the van is worth putting another trans into ... unless I can fix it myself or find a cheaper way ... any thoughts?

I’m looking for some guidance. I have a 2010 Honda Odyssey EX-L. It just started a weird thing that when I go into a turn at any greater than 20-30mph, the transmission seems to slip. I get the triangle warning and slight grinding sound. I have to let off the gas because there’s no power and it recovers fine. And all power returns until the next time it does it. This started when I was making a left hand turn from a stop, but now seems to do it in all turns, but mostly left handed and the turns can be gradual and not tight as well. I drained and refilled twice, but no real change. Any ideas please? Oh, and there are no transmission codes. Thank you.

I don't know if you will respond or not but I really like my 2003 Odyssey 214k serviced by Honda until I got it with 167k I've done the maitinence since other than the trans as the local Honda dealership won't mess with the trans and none of the transmission shops in the area I'd trust. I have a problem with a transmission shudder under light load cruiser between 38-42mph and again 48-53. Doesn't happen under medium-heavy load or slowing down. It's very noticeable getting of the gas and back on it makes it stop. What might it be or should I look for? I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar issue on the forums. I'm prepared to tackle it myself. As I really like these vans and plan to get another but I want to know completely how fix the trans as it's the only issue I haven't tackled.

You should do something fun and interesting to your videos, like state your prediction of the problem(s) and see if you're right or not.
