    I had heard so many complaints about the Honda transmissions in general, and the Odyssey in particular. I've watched some other TH-cam videos of guys replacing the solenoids, but your tear-down and analysis was a complete eye-opener. You just dissected the beast and exposed the shoddy band-aid work of the other shop, and were spot-on about the torque converter not being touched, and just leading to the same failure eventually--wow, you are the Jedi master of transmissions!!

    Me: I don't really want to watch a 40 minute transmission autopsy
    Me 40 minutes later: Holy shit, this guy is amazing. I'd totally take my transmission to this guy for repair.
    I'm a retired mechanic, who worked for Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Toyota. We always swapped units out, and I did take some training classes on disassembly of transmissions, but for the most part, we swapped reman units in. If I was to want to learn how to overhaul a transmission, I would 100% want you to be my mentor. Awesome job! 😎

      knowing how they fail, the key is to keep 'em alive with fresh ATF and easier driving - They really can't handle high output for long

    i sat thru this entire video to learn more about these BYBA's but i think i remember you saying "once the outer shell gets removed, it'll look simpler" ( on-lookers will understand better )... And by GoLLy - That tear down makes me Appreciate REAL transmission mechanics! 👀
    Wonderful, my man, Wonderful: you deserve every penny of whatever you get paid for these transmission jobs👌.

    Awesome vids! I have a BGFA that was suddenly locking up in 3rd, decided to do a full rebuild on it. Combined your Honda 4-speed and Odyssey and Acura 5 speed videos to gather info and managed to successfully do it! However I didn't replace all the solenoids and so a couple years later I've got the tranny out because it went into limp mode, no go in 3rd. Alas I just pulled it apart, about 90% of all frictions are toast, 3rd is literally bare metal. I guess I didn't save any money not replacing those solenoids the first time through! Argh!
    But I'm running on - thank you for these! I think you should start a Patreon because you are, as a few have said already, a natural teacher and sharing your encyclopedic knowledge of these units is an incredible gift. For now, glad to see you back after a year or so hiatus. Hope all is well, take care!

    We have a 2004 Odyssey with 206K miles and it's on the third transmission. 1st failed around 80K miles and Honda paid half for the replacement. They gave us a 3 year, 36K mile warranty. Failed abut 10K miles later and got the 3rd one for free. If it goes out now, I'll drive it to this guy. Absolute miracle worker.

    Hello Hiram, truly a very nice video and thank you for taking the time and sharing it with us. I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey and i am the 1st owner. it has currently about 124K miles on it, I talked to Honda and told them about the problem. They will take a look at it through the dealer. Question is. Is it a 5 speed AT or 4 speed gear. how will i know. I have a problem while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, is 20Mph is 2nd or 3rd and then again while moving from 40mph to 50. it gives jerk and changes the gear, so is that a 3rd gear ?
    There has been a recall and i was not informed by honda. the return cooler line was placed on my car in the earlier 40K miles. My question is if the transmission had truly a problem, why was just patching with a cooler line was subsituted by Honda. This is cheating customers and blinding NHTSA. Would you recommend me a good transmission repair shop as people who did replace the tranny are on their 3rd tranny now. Thanks

    Holy Crap... You are awesome dude. I will not be attempting that. I dont know where you are. But I wish you could do My 05 Odyssey Torque converter. The issue I have is It feels like it is shifting in and out of overdrive. Low and High speeds. Been told by a few people that it is the torque converter. Im gettin ready to pull the trigger on that. I just went to Honda shop $2500 just to replace the converter. I'm sure they wont be tearing it apart. I already bought New fluid, the 2 2nd & 3rd pressure switches. Crush washers, and filter under the battery. I'm thinking about selling it. Kinda sucks. I like the van.

    • @glasser2819
      @glasser2819 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the fix is to take it easy with power and replace ATF to maintain good clutch pressure.
      Collapsed rubber O-rings cause low pressure and clutch slippage.

    • @glasser2819
      @glasser2819 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      these trannies have different shift characteristics for each clutch based on what the ECU orders.
      If ECU thinks you're climbing a hill a hard shift will be ordered
      if the ECU thinks you're cruising on a flat road then butter smooth shifts.
      in other words bad shifts are not all the tranny's fault!!
      HEAT is the ultimate enemy

I am hoping there is not a bunch of extra stuff worn out because of money problems, Car runs great when warmed up some, but cold mornings it revs between first and second gear and also revs before going into first. until I wait for engine to get warm. any suggestions or something I should ask my mechanic before he is done putting my tranny back in ? Masterpiece of a video. I have a 2002 Odyssey which I know have problem prone transmissions. I think all the problems are due to overheating and/or Honda's trans fluid being not top quality? Honda has replaced its ATF-Z1 fluid with ATF DW-1 since 2002. Maybe it is better. Also, wouldn't it be a good idea to change the external fluid filter which maintenance schedules never mention. And, wouldn't it help to drain and refill the fluid on a regular basis? Or maybe upgrade the fluid cooler? My Odyssey has 165K miles with no trany problems yet. Knock on wood.

      Quizá sea tarde ya, sin duda ninguna el aceite lo debe cambiar y el filtro si es exterior también , no sale todo , más ó menos la mitad pero así se hace y esto hara que su trasmisión dure y dure. Repita el cambio cada 60.000 km

    Excellent video. It help me rebuild my transmission. Thank you very much. I recently rebuild this exact transmission (BYBA). I used the transtar kit with the surperior kit and sonnax end caps. I clean everything including the vavle bores. The only oring that I could not replace was the 3rd gear accumlater because it was stuck. Now I have a grinding or clatter noise in 3rd gear. Sounds like the clutches are clapping. I tried replacing the 3rd & 4th gear pressure switches. Oil came out of the 3rd but not the 4th. Is the stuck accumlater the reason for the grinding/clatter? And is oil surposed to come out of the pressure switch locations?

      I know it's been some years now but what eventually happened. I've had 2 2004 odysseys and I think the main way to stop wear is to replace the outside filter and add a 2nd after market in line filter and change fluid more often. I just bought 1 with only 67,000mi and it does the same un smooth shift 50% of the time from 1st into 2nd and hesitates from park going into drive. My 1st odyssey had 175,000mi with the same problems but still worked ok. The other thing is the shift solenoids create priblems.

  • @robertlinck8608
    @robertlinck8608 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    was the issue the filter? I have the same exact probleb with a 03 odyssey. I rebuilt it. I have rebuilt 5 of the BYBA units before with the full transtar kit as I did on this one. Ive never had an issue before and I replaced the filter and I know the oring was intact. I'm very stumped. Do you have any other suggestions? It felt like deja vu watching this video! But I'm still at a lost. The valvebody was clean.

    Hiram, do you have an idea what would cause this transmission to not go into any gear when at operating temp? I have a 2006 and it works great cold, but once the engine warms up it won't go into any gear, and you can hear a sound coming from trans. similar to a hydraulic pump whining.
    Thanks

    I have a 2000 Odyssey which had a recently rebuilt transmission when I bought it 2 years ago. Now with just 20K miles, it has a "shutter" when under load, usually at high speeds, around 60 mph. I took it back to the shop that rebuilt it, and they changed the fluid, and said that "might" fix the problem. It did not. He said it might be the torque converter. The warranty was only for a year. Any ideas? Maybe he told me that because he knows he did not change the torque converter when he rebuilt the trans; I am assuming he rebuilt it as cheap as possible so the owner could sell the van ... I don't think the van is worth putting another trans into ... unless I can fix it myself or find a cheaper way ... any thoughts?

    Question - I just replaced the transaxle in my Ridgeline (which uses a similar, though not same trans) with a used one with about 75k on it. It was clean and empty when installed (only filled with Honda ATF). It now has all forward gears, seems to shift fine, but no reverse. Seems to me the problem could only be caused by the reverse servo (solenoids are known-good/tested). Thanks. PS - great video, really informative. I appreciate it being direct and quick.

    Hiram, I just rebuilt this transmission actually (01 acura cl 5 speed BGFA) pretty much the same. Rebuild is fine but this is the second time I have done a honda transmission that the secondary shaft will not torque into place. Pretty much every one I have done has one thread showing on the shafts after nuts are installed and torqued. The first one I installed and didn't know, after everything seated I had to pull trans again and re-torque nuts. I don't want to do that again. Anything I should look for? Main and counter shafts came up fine but the secondary shaft won't. I'm talking about 1/16 . I took pictures before I took it apart and I know it's not up. I am going to pull back apart to see if I can find anything. Any pointers would be appreciated.

    So what is the conclusion of the tear down. I was waiting for the valve body to be the culprit from not being previously taken down that far (as stated). But it sounds like that's not what the actual problem is. So if the torque converter is replace problem solved?

    Second time rebuilding a BYBA, new torque converter this time. I follow directions, it all goes together, but it will not turn a wheel. I can rotate the tires and make the transmission rotate inside - feedback from the differential - but when I start the engine, the wheels do not turn in reverse or forward direction. With it in gear, if I floor it, in reverse or drive, the engine revs to 2800 and won't rev any higher. There is some load on the engine, a converter stall. Before I drop the subframe and take it all apart again, do you have any ideas? All new external electronics too, speed sensors and solenoid valves. All the solenoids clicked when I put 12V to them.
    As you say, what the hell went wrong?

    What's the function of the "low coast accumulator"? What is it accumulating?
