  • Hello and thank you for stopping by! In this episode, I have just collected a 1973 two stroke petrol British Seagull 40 outboard. It was sold as unknown running condition. This is my third Seagull outboard, can I get it started? Join me to find out!

    they are water cooled and have a plastic impeller,that was not pumping water,maybe not in enough depth but dont run for to long unless you can see water coming out the hole in the barrel

    I am pretty sure that this is a 1983 motor, not 1973. The little holes in the sides of the carb bowl are normal, when you prime the fuel before starting a little fuel should dribble out of those to indicate the bowl is full.

      Hello fellow Sailor and thanks for your comment! That's quite interesting to know. I was judging the age by putting the serial number (EF195BB3) in a Seagull Engine Identifier which came up with 'Manufacture Date: February 1973. However, it also says 'EF Coded Engines Years Manufactured 1985 to 1989'. I am hoping to take it out on the water soon, see what it can do, so keep an eye out for a video. Perhaps I can dig in deeper and find some more information?

      @@skipperstan A few details that I noticed, that lead to my thought that this motor is newer, are the shape and color of the fuel tank, Seagull used that shade of blue starting in the late 1970s to 1980s, earlier years the tank was black and more oval if viewed from side rather than having a seam joining two halves. The housing around the flywheel also was introduced around that time, older motors had the flywheel totally exposed, the larger motors even had rewind starters by this time instead of the old “wind and pull” starter rope. These later year Seagulls seemed to have better cosmetics, maybe aluminum parts were now anodized? This was also around the time that more precise, upgraded bearings allowed the change from a 10-1 gas-oil ratio to the 25-1 ratio. The traditional, old Seagulls were great outboards, incredibly simple to run and maintain, and very reliable! However, they were far from environmentally friendly! Between the minor gas spill when priming prior to starting, and the oil slick that followed the boat while running, along with the smoke screen exhaust, they are not kind to our waters. Still, I have fond memories of the 1970 Silver Century (about 4-5hp) long-shaft that we had as auxiliary power on our 21’ sailboat back in the 1970s!! Oh, that unique sound! I can still recognize a Seagull from a great distance just by hearing it!

    NOW AFTER WATCHING A TH-cam ON MAGENET FISHING, I ORDERED A LARGE MAGENET, WISH ME LUCH...

      I think someone already found your outboard and sold it to Mustie1. He just posted a video of a completely rusted out Seagull.

      They don’t have an impeller, they are air cooled. 🙂

      @@skipperstan No British seagulls are water cooled, also if running in a bucket, disconect the prop, then you can run the engine at higher revs and you should see the tell tale water coming out from under the cylinder block,

      @@stuwhite2337 Well done! It's quite satisfying when they work after fixing them, they might be basic but at least they are fairly simple to work on. I have a few others in the pipeline to fix, not sure if it is worth doing any videos on them as I have already done two Seagulls?
