    Gotta love the carbon blades! It’s a sleek looking canoe without the R bolster

      It's a handsome knife. It lends credence to the reasoning for many people wanting the "R" to go away.

    I have Watched this Video on the Carbon Steal RR1571 Canoe as well as video's on the Black Micarta Canoe RR2209.
    I decided to order the RR 1571 as you are right the Dark blade and brushed look with out the "R" on the bolster was simply the Classy Choice with a Carbon Steal Blade. Great Video, Thank you.

    Love your videos! Whenever I get a new knife, I buff it up real good with a cotton polishing drill pad and Flitz, add some Rem oil, clean that up with a little alcohol, and put a light wax on some of the smooth handles. I make the knife bolsters and edges shine, and I can even buff down rough spots and proud fasteners. In fact, I can’t wait to improve a knew knife when it first arrives! Only after going over it thoroughly, can I truly judge and admire it.

    • @RasThavas
      @RasThavas 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also bought one of those lately. It is super nice. I gave like 11.37 for it on walmart online. The 420 J2 was a challenge to sharpen for me (probably just me), but when I got it sharp it really holds an edge.

  • @RasThavas
    @RasThavas 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So, I have this knife and it sure sharpens and strops like it is high carbon. Very forgiving compared to the "7/17 cro-mov", 420 HC, 440A, or the "carbon series RR" with the yellow Delrin handles. I can say this because I sharpened a lot of knives in a row till each one was hair popping sharp, not just shaving sharp. All these knives being basic RR, Gerber, Buck, Marbles, and Ocoee River. This knife sharpened a lot like an old yellow handled Case Trapper I have with the old Carbon steel blades on it. Literally 6 swipes each side on an Arkansas stone, six swipes each side with a strop (w green paste) and it shaves like a safety razor blade. It also has that "toothy", grabby, feel to the edge even when it is very fine and polished. It could be a great 440C....but if it is it is the best 440C I have ever sharpened. Just my two cents worth.

    This model has been on Heinnie Haynes website for a long time, thought about getting it but didn't, wish they made them a little bit bigger just under three inch blade would be great, I have RR048 and longest blade bang on 2 and a half inches, the Canoe is a great pattern and others RR make are nice looking knives, I decided to stick with the one or else I would have a bunch by now, try not not to duplicate patterns.

    I have the RR carbon steel canoe in blue denim. It a great knife and well designed. However, I find it a tad weighty for it's size. I think I'd prefer it with just the main blade.
    I have the high carbon half hawk which I love. Unfortunately, on my piece the blade was unevenly ground and with a biggish gap on the back. Mind you it came perfectly centered.
    RRs are quite a bit more expensive in Europe, I'd say about double.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Probably 440c instead of the usual 440a, I haven't seen a t10 with a coating on it and the fact it says 440 leads me to believe it may be 440c high carbon stainless steel

    Hey TK, I'd like to weigh in on the "high carbon" steel. Buck does the same thing with their steel. They use 420hc, for "high carbon". Their 420 has about 0.45 carbon in it. Rough Ryder 440a would contain 0.60 -0.75 carbon. So maybe Rough Ryder is just trying to get "Carbon steel" in the title for marketing.
    Traditional knife users are used to "carbon steel" terms. Iron needs carbon to harden, therefore all knife steels will contain carbon. Stainless steels have chrome added. Hence stainless steel. Stainless steel can have high carbon amounts. Usually 0.45% on up to just over 1.00% for non-powder metal steels.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is just a titanium coated 440A stainless blade. RR terminology can be really wonky at times. I have a lot of modern Bucks, yep 420HC for the US versions with the excellent Bos heat treat.

    Got the Bow Trapper in the series just after the law change as it was close to the legal limit but they're not small insipid blades. That was the only one in the series available at the time. Had to give that one a flush too and the fit and finish isn't perfect. It's built like a tank, in the last couple of years of use the coating hasn't chipped or flaked off the blade. They sharpen very well, good user knives. Wouldn't buy a bow handle shaped knife again though, not a fan. Stick with the Canoe.

  • @Tinman3187
    @Tinman3187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    3:45 I could be wrong, but I've read that "high carbon" just means anything approaching .8 or 1% carbon content in steel. It doesn't necessarily mean "carbon steel". So for example there are high carbon tool steels but these still have chromium and other metals in them. The maker of this knife might be using 440c which has around 1% carbon and therefore they can say it's a "high carbon" blade and not be lying.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ambiguous knife marketing is a pet peeve of mine. Just say what it is in detail and we don't have to guess. Thanks for the info Tinman it helps.
