  • Sir Nigel Gresley Runs where the Main Operators Daren't!
Caledonian Sleeper stuck in the Citadel
    Varamis 321s also stuck
Caldew Junction north of Carlisle flooded - water over the top of the bridge!
No Avanti or TransPennine trains (although TPE eventually got going by early afternoon)
Only service is Northern to Newcastle!
    Flooded lines around Carlisle!
    23 May 24
Most lines leading into Carlisle were suffering from flooding with Network Rail closing the WCML and Settle and Carlisle lines in the morning and into the afternoon!
The worst flood was to the North of Carlisle station at Caldew Junction, where, overnight, the river Caldew had risen maybe 15 feet or more and over the tracks. Through the day it dropped and Network Rail were on hand to check the junction for issues before trains were eventually allowed through in early evening.
Sir Nigel Gresley brought the Saphos Trains' S&C Fellsman over the West Coast Main Line into Carlisle - the first train through the flooded tract north of Penrith and then headed south, as per schedule, over the Settle & Carlisle line, where the flooding between the Baron Wood tunnels had just been cleared.

Wow... I don't recall flooding being a major issue in videos before. Has the rain and such been that bad this year? Still, what a beautiful loco in a great color and beautiful rake of coaches. Oh, and some nice modern freight and passenger service, even the unlucky TPEs getting held until later.

The overnight rain was considerable, especially in the hills (forecast was a month's rain in 2 days!) and the meeting of the rivers Caldew and Eden caused the Caldew to rise possible 15-20 feet where the railway crosses it - well above the rails in the early hours. The A4 did look special

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Wow... It has been a long time since our Maumee River flooded that high. It is due... pretty high this Spring, but not to such levels.

An excellent comprehensive coverage of the day - or at least what day there was!
Like the long-lens closing shot from London Road.

Another incredible video Les. I liked the fact that there were no Avanti's, I'm no fan of those. SNG looked great in the blue and considering the confusion of the day I thought the siren in the closing clip was perfect. David.

Thanks David - I always seem to find ambulances when I film from a main road bridge!. Gresley did look smart - hope to see her again pretty soon.

The floods caused so many problems but old time steam still got there on time. Maybe we should go back to using them in regular service during bad weather. Nice you got to see the sleeper there Would like to of seen that myself.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  หลายเดือนก่อน

To be honest I think the flooding was receding by midday but the main operators were slow to react. All the same less likelihood of a steam loco having trouble - I remember them back in the day going through quite deep puddles.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways They used to run through floods, now something like an inch over the rail top is the limit. I have a book with a photo of a GWR prairie tank going through a station with water deeper than the platform, always wondered if it put the fire out being that deep.

The railway companies really have no idea how to run a railway, bring back British Railways, privatisation does not work, it sucks.
