For anyone doing this swap who has the *T shaped* auto shifter, you cant pull it off. Theres a hidden allen bolt on the dash side of the shifter under the leathe. I ended up just cutting into the leather with a knife, ripping off the T handle entirely and exposing the bolt. The plastic under it pops off easy once the bolt is removed. Dont cut yourself.
Can you change automatic shift knobs? I don’t want to manual swap but I have a T shift knob and I wanted to change it with another auto shift knob
I just my e36 can’t wait to swap for manual your videos !
I am doing this right now and got to the nice screws behind the two pipes. I have found I can get the shifter mechanism out without removing the surround pc. A little twisting, remove the shift lock solenoid and it is out. Will let you know how it goes from here.
I'm doing this right now thanks for the video
From my experience with those tabs being broken, you need to remove the entire shifter surround and lower center console piece as one. The only way to correctly re-attach the shifter surround piece is to do it upside down with the lower center console
PITA lol
Hi I just have a quick question so I also own the same model BMW and I don't have to much experience working on cars but do you think this is a good way to start learning and safe
instaBlaster.
Quinn- Started my swap and was taking apart the front console/shifter trim to get at the shifter. I know yours was messed up from the previous owner, which made getting the panel off easier than the rest of us. I could not get at the top left hand screw because it is behind that steel support piece. I found the attached video which made it easier to get the job done especially since the kick panel and under-dash panels on the driver's side has to be taken out anyway for the pedal assembly. th-cam.com/video/gjB346Pw6nM/w-d-xo.html Thought you might want to stick the link up at the top of the page as a supplement to your video... Havin' a ball with this so far. Pete
YES!EXACTLY WHAT THIS GUY DID IS RIGHT. #SAVETHEE36
Hit my self in the face? NO. Smack my head on the roof!!
Wait what do you do with the cable that goes to the steering column??
I just left mine alone, didnt touch it
Boss!
where's the link to the playlist? it don't work.
th-cam.com/play/PLVaxrCrxn-sEt1qoabl_XmNr3kEWJGubj.html sorry about that! fixed
So what do I do when the little bolt holding the shifter on the the shift arm is already stripped? I went to take it off but the thing is stripped completely I'm trying to use Allen keys atm
I think I'm just gonna break it off, feel like that's really the only option I have I wanted to sell it after I take it off but idc if I have to break it lol and is the shifter console area different on manual then automatic? I see the shape of the wood trim is not exactly even on each side
Next time to remove that screw in the dash u just leave it in remove the whole thing as one big piece all connected. Once u see what I mean ull be like omg it's that easy
It’s an automatic want to do the swap
Hey brotha how u I have a 98 m3 4dr blk what do u think about the Zionsville 6 speed transmission
I dont know, I have never used it or heard of anyone that has used it. Im sure you could piece together a 6 speed conversion for cheaper than the kit's price, there are tons of threads on 6 speed conversions. if you end up going with it, let me know how it works out for you!
🏆🏆
Does anyone recommend the automatic for this car
not really, but they are significantly cheaper than the manuals for the same car, that is why I am doing a manual swap DIY series. check this out, it might answer a few questions: th-cam.com/video/pVgbu8Piozs/w-d-xo.html
Nope, no they don't. The 5spd is superior in many ways. Weight, maintenance, 0-60, ability to choose your gear and rpm, less parts, more gears, longer life, clutch takes abuse not the driveline etc. I have a 5spd so I'm biased truthfully. But that's what I like about it.
Mike B I was only asking because I really like this car but I don't know how to manual but I want to learn is this a good car to learn Stick on ?
yeah, its not the easiest car to learn manual on but it is one of the most rewarding cars to drive a manual in. I learned on my E36 M3 after the first manual conversion i did. I will be doing a full manual driving Tutorial series shortly after the manual swap series is finished, if that helps. will be convering everything from basic driving all the way to heel toes and left foot braking.
SuPra Tiyo 55k !!! Didn't mean to be rude. In my opinion it is one of the easier cars to drive manual. It shifts very nice, and if you dump the clutch too hard accidentally it will not buck as hard as say FwD car. And because it is a lighter vehicle it also helps to get the hang of it. The way this engine delivers power is very enjoyable to hit redline as your climbing thru the gears. I'm comparing to a 93 SHO, 93 F150, 92 Dakota, 89 f150, multiple jeeps 95 mustang, 96 GTI, 89 vette, 79 power wagon. BMW uses a clutch delay valve which will also aid you in learning. Supras are cool, like your name. Good luck 👍
