The poor Caretaker is probably one of the last people in Hamlet who have seen and served the Ancestor. I think he knows a lot more what is happening to Hamlet and about Ancestor. You can feel it that he is hiding something, not telling everything that our heroes need to know
Because you can see the caretaker shift into a flesh monster while buying provisions in the end game it's very possible that the caretaker's seen the heart of darkness and was assimilated into it. Leaving behind a mad monster taking on the guise of his original self.

Ancestor: hey little man, can you go to this town and recruit people to kill god? It's not part of a ritual or something. Heir: sure, why not? *actually kills god* Ancestor:
I like to think that in the end, he did have a change of heart and sent the letter in earnest... but his fate was no longer his at that point, and anything he could have done would have furthered the Heart's goals, along with his own dark ambition made manifest.
He was the Heart’s creature from the moment he put that glass to his lips. Everything he did, whether it be for or against it, only ever played into its designs. Even his death was not his own; merely another step further in the great ones plan.
Don't think he changed his mind at all. The letter itself seems to be...arcane. He was a man devoured utterly by his desires and the heart provided them. He was a slave to his dying moment and perhaps even his afterlife too. That maybe the price to reach further was to give the heart and its flesh the ego and awareness neccessary for it to continue to feed and grow. There is nothing suggesting the heart was sentient or sapient. Just an eldridge mass of undying flesh. Reacting to the petty whims of its children by giving them their darkest wishes. But to fuse with such a horror...to witness it in all its glory and then desire it like a lover...how could this have any effect but madness upon even the most depraved of minds?
God I hate ancestor even more now, such an amazing villain. And to ever be fooled into thinking such a wretched and vile person would have a sudden change of heart. Madness...
He's a villain we love to hate. A suave, smooth aristocratic who does whatever he wants because he can. He's so entertaining because of how over the top evil he is. And since he's voiced by Wayne June it makes it even better.
He never had a change of heart. He just lacked direction. With each event his purpose became more concrete. The man was truly vile and got what he deserved. To become subsumed by an eldridge horror. Makes no difference he sought that end. He will madly continue on, a wretch too far gone to realize what a miserable existence he has carved for himself.
Though its just speculation, like it could have been the hearts way of mocking him and all hes done by assimilating him and continuing to use him as a puppet Dont get me wrong hes a horrible person but I dont think taking his life was apart of his ambitions usually those sort of rituals are done in the entities presence
@@geoshark12 I dont think it is necessarily to mock him, the ancestor was the one to put everything in place so it would make sense for the thing/creature to even reward his efforts just like the cultists that received its blessings Also not to mentionbthe fact that he was the one that wrote the letter to manipulate us into traveling to the Hamlet, so who would have been better than the man himself to serve as the avatar of crawling chaos itself?

Loved the different VAs. Gives the whole video a theatrical, dramatic mood, and everybody's unique accounts about the Ancestor, from the Countess's villainous dramatics to the Siren's frankness and nervous energy or the Prophet's senile ramblings, feels like I'm watching some kind of documentary about a serial killer (probably a more accurate description than not of the Ancestor). Amazing stuff, loved it.

Its somewhat disheartening to learn that all the bosses you fight are just victims of the ancestors fuckery. Im interested to see how the story developes with the second game coming soon
Rewatching this, I think I had a small realization. A True Deathless win, ultimately, beats the Ancestor and your suggested plan that he had. And that’s accomplished either with the perseverance of half a team (Hell, even Reynauld and Dismas), or by utilizing the many cursed elements of the Estate to defeat the Heart in such a manner, thereby the Ancestor providing the tools for his own defeat.
As poetic as meet your maker is, I think just killing the heart of darkness is enough. The ancestor assumed you, the heir, would be another one of his victims, used to justify his means and revive the heart. Little did he know, through either godly command, idiotic perseverance, or a sure iron will, you successfully beat the heart and destroy his plans, even if you lost some heroes along the way. As they say, the end justifies the means.
Yeah, a true deathless run really should give you a different speech at the end. Perhaps the Ancestor being baffled, annoyed, maybe even a little bit proud as he speaks of his ruined plans even while condescending that it was all pointless. He should definitely have a reaction to you not having sent anyone to die and only shedding the blood of madmen and monsters, even if the bloodshed still ultimately fuels his ambitions.
They did hint that in DD2, there is something special for getting the same 4 heroes to the end of the game with all 5 memory slots filled. Allegedly! I have no idea what that could be, I hope it's a secret ending, and not just unlocks their Hero Shrine skins.
I despise the ancestor... No trace of redemption of compassion. No friends, no goals, just a morbid curiosity for things better left alone. I love him...
I don't find the Ancestor to be an unreliable narrator so much that everything he says is true, but only from his own point of view... which is warped at best. . Once you familiarize yourself with the narrator, you usually can get an idea of what he means.
He's unreliable in the sense that his knowledge of the otherworldly isn't fully true; everyone isn't just one flesh, but rather their own individuals, who preserve in the end.
It's really cool seeing all the lore put together like this in such a natural progression. Really puts a lot of terrible actions into perspective when you see and infer what led him to each terrible deed. Excellent work!
This was magnificent from the art to the voice acting just all of it! Now It gets me pumped for the Darkest Dungeon 2 and the story's and lore it holds.
Holy shit, you are quite the story teller. I loved the voice acting in this, especially the Countess. I greatly enjoyed your previous lore videos and this is just on a new level, an amazing 42 minutes of my life spent. I’m looking forward to your future projects and I hope to see you grow, I’ll make sure to share this around!
I wonder if he was still sane when he contacted the heir, some far-off nephew probably living a relatively affluent life in some port, brought here to avenge his stupidity. Poor man whoever he was, hell, he probably thought the ancestor was still alive, but no, when he arrived he found a near-abandoned town and a madman, with only two scoundrels to protect himself, or maybe he lured the heir in to accelerate the process, nonetheless, the heir will know the tragic extent of their failings. Because let us not forget, in the crimson court the high society invites YOU, the player to partake in their debauchery, maybe to feast on you, to laugh at your demise, or just for a dance which you might return different from. Of course, instead of a daring young heir, they would welcome a pack of hardened mercenaries.
I think to a degree, he wasn't really writing to any family in particular. In the end quote, he said the "Great Family of Man" so he was likely referring to humanity in general. It could also be that he made a clone of himself as a description of the painting claim the pictures have an uncanny resemblance to you.
This version of the Prophet's story fits so well with the sequel storyline so far, the idea that he KNEW the Ancestor was bringing about the end of the world but no one would listen. Also the idea that somehow he was being kept alive, maybe there was some force opposite the Heart that was using all of it's strength to keep one person on the path to help save the world. Then when the Prophet saw the heart maybe he saw that no matter what he did he would fail and that he would then (perhaps as punishment) have to live forever in hell because he couldn't die.
I mean the theory that he sent the letter so that you'd send more people to their deaths and complete the ritual is somewhat supported by the game mechanics. On blood Moon difficulty if you lose more than... I think it was 12 heroes, the game automatically ends in a lose condition. This could be because 13 was the number of sacrifices the heart needed to fully revive. Then again I could just be reading way too much into this.
No, you're 100% right. We don't know if that *was* the ancestors intention, but yes, every death does contribute to the heart's power, and it is specified that the blood moon lose condition *is* the heart taking over the manor.
@@SSFplayer2 another fact worth considering is that if you take more than a year to face the heart of darkness on blood moon you also automatically lose the run. So it's not necessarily that the lives of the heroes were needed but that their deaths can accelerate the completion of the ritual. Which would suggest that not all lives are equal in the eyes of the ritual.
So happy I got to work with you on this project and absolutely LOVE how it turned out! Keep up the amazing work, and I hope I get to work with you again soon!

This might be the best history for a so ambiguous game I have ever seen. It ties very well whith the tone of the game, and utilizes every hint we have piece it together all of the Ancestor's actions and it's effects when we, the Successor, arive.
35:37 - yes, we don't know how much time had passed since the letter was sent, but it wasn't "months" or even "years". Decades sounds more probable. When you embark on infinite harvest mission (CoM DLC), the Ancestor says: "The poor Miller - thrice a victim. The seasons took his livelihood, I took his land, and now, *uncountable years* later, the comet has taken his humanity."
Agreed. That was just to drive home the point that we're coming to the Estate after years of neglect and ruin. Not even the Ancestor knows how much time has past.

It is indeed. I ran into the guy when I pointed out a bit of lore I noticed (that being the frequent use of the alchemical symbol of olive oil) and offered my vocal services. Very glad I did.
i really like it how it shows all his screw up connecting one to another in an chronological order. but it make you wonder, the duchess was already a monster before hand, that would imply that there are others and how her blood gave the ancestor a vision of the old ones. She could be connected to them as well.
if the hearth wanted blood, couldnt he just send the undead army over the townsfolk or the brigands? i think that the countess is a being that used to be part of the beings that live in the heart of darkness, perhaps a parasyte of some kind.
My theory is he committed suicide to become one with the heart and inherent its power, and in doing so, lost control of his undead army. So they just follow his last orders: defend the manner. Anyone entering the manner has to deal with the spooky scary skeletons, but the skeletons will never leave the manner.
Truely magnigicent presentation of the one that is responsible for the malignant and twisted horrors infestating his own land. Oh, and also adding pigs into my List of Phobias.
4:10 and 5:30 This seems wrong though. The final cutscene of Crimson Court clearly portrays him as creating this "Wine" made from the blood of the Countess, because of his degeneracy. He himself drank from the blood, but only a little, hence the wording of a "single drop", and from what is explained, it seems to hint that he wasn't only seeking new "experiences", it almost looks like he did this as symbolic vengeance towards the Countess. She wanted to consume the Ancestor, so the Ancestor consumed her. He unleashed the Crimson Curse as accident, and only "now" when he is older, does he reflect upon his hypocrisy, and hedonistic ways. Basically, you can imagine it with in-game mechanics that the nobles immediatelly became cursed by drinking the whole wine, but since the Ancestor drank only a drop, he experienced an incredible amount of "Stress" and saw a vision.
It's plausible that his motivation was just his own degeneracy but it raises the question of why serve it to his guests? The way he talks about the Court in the prior cutscenes and opening, leads us to believe that he hated the Court. If it was a self-serving motivation, why bring it to the Court to share with others? While he did drink the blood, I assumed it was by accident. He was still raising his glass for a toast, about to reveal the truth behind the wine, when everyone began to transform, since they just started drinking as soon as they got the glasses. He drops his glass in shock, and a "single drop" that fell from his glass, gifted him with the vision. A full drink or swig would have driven him mad and transformed him like everyone else. The hypocrisy part I'm not sure I understand since he is adamant about how he refused to be labeled a hypocrite. Which is why he allowed the Court's degeneracy in the first place. He was a slave to his own vices, but in hindsight those were lesser when compared to someone like the Baron.
@@MiskatonicMemorialist "...why serve it to his guests?" Why not? The Ancestor - at this time - is a slave of hedonistic impulse. Most people such as him, and the rest of the court were people who liked to "experiment" out of boredom. Sure, he could drink it alone, but if he enjoyed his pleasures alone, then why would he have the court in the first place? Hence it makes sense for him to "share" this new experience rather than doing so alone. "...I assumed it was by accident." As I looked more into it, yeah. It does seem more like an accident indeed. I imagine he was taking the glass to his lips just as it all began, and he accidently "kissed" his drink (as we commonly refer to, in my country, when someone takes the most gentle of sips). :p "The hypocrisy part I'm not sure I understand..." I worded things poorly, so I am to blame on this one. What I meant to say is that "back then" the Ancestor was just like the rest of the court, or at least he mostly was. And though he did despise some of the folk in that court, he did not voice his oppinion for fear of being branded as a hypocrite. The very Ancestor, now at an older age, realizes the error and decadence in his ways, and I was using it to further justify it as to why I thought that he "shared" his wine without malice, as opposed to wishing to poison the court, as this video claimed it to be. :p
@KRIMZONMEKANISM We put the caveat of "Perhaps" as to his reasoning, since there are alot of theories about why he did what he did, because it was such a weird thing to do. I will say that him being bored was definitely the cause for a majority of problems. So it's definitely a possibility that he did just want to engage in some light hearted cannibalism. (Victorians am I right :p) My theory was that he just wanted to humiliate his peers in a sadistic prank, given the degeneracy of the Court, and since he hated most (if not all) of them, it's not out of the realm of possibility. Would be a fitting punishment, since in his eyes, they were parasites who feasted at his expense. Raises his glass for the toast, but doesn't actually drink it. The other theory was just a good ol fashion poisoning, since it was the blood of an Eldritch monster which for all he knew was toxic. I welcome any discussion on the Ancestor, since he's such a fasinating character. Given how much he messed up and that's just what we know, DD2 will probably reveal even more horrible stuff.
Absolutely magnificent performance for the characters and outstanding explanation of the lore. I was glad to see interest on the game, but after seeing the sheer quality of the video I am no less than overjoyed!

Heir: sure, why not?
*actually kills god*
Ancestor:
FUCK!…. Well at least time is a circle.
@@TheCorrodedMan The moment he saw it and it saw him, he was damned.
It all started with that smile. That damn smile...
Though its just speculation, like it could have been the hearts way of mocking him and all hes done by assimilating him and continuing to use him as a puppet
Dont get me wrong hes a horrible person but I dont think taking his life was apart of his ambitions usually those sort of rituals are done in the entities presence
@@lemniscatel5491 what im saying is if you look at it from the point of view of a man who realized he had been manipulated and tried to kill himself as escape , yet the heart brings him back to continue
Even though the video says hes an unreliable narrator I don’t agree with that , he does not lie to you once in the game , he actually tells you the whole story , unlike say glados from portal where we know we can’t trust her words
I dont think dying was some sort of master plan i think it was a man the realized he is fucked and he needed someone to clean up his mess
Also, this was a stellar cast. The voice acting for each boss was brilliantly done, and I'd love to see and/or hear them again on the channel.
If I can I certainly will. It's been a ton of fun (if a bit heavy on the throat)

This is S-tier level work my friend

This video is beyond insanity. The voice acting, editing and visuals are all Redhook quality. Seriously well done to all who made this.
You assembled the Ancestor's Journals into a cohesive, sensible timeline. Awesome
In (42 minutes and 38 seconds), you will understand the true extend of my failings...
Its somewhat disheartening to learn that all the bosses you fight are just victims of the ancestors fuckery. Im interested to see how the story developes with the second game coming soon
Well, the brigands are kind of assholes on their own
And the Hag became a victim to herself
I do feel sorry for the cannons.

Called grand slam
The moral of the story, Hire a ragtag group of misfits to fight some old guy and his failures.
I despise the ancestor... No trace of redemption of compassion. No friends, no goals, just a morbid curiosity for things better left alone. I love him...
Honoured to have been able to add my own little contribution to this project. Massive well done to everybody involved :)
The way this is done reminds me of Fallout New Vegas' endings, how each character talks during the section regarding them. I love it.
Great job! Can't wait for the story of DD2.
Thanks and I can't wait to hear what you have in store for DD2
I like to think that the Heir goes on all the expeditions too, but just doesn’t fight. Like he commands them while there.
@@Saladin0127 I'm pretty sure that is how it is, which is why retreating is a thing. I'm pretty sure you carry all the items as well.
This is amazing, the production quality is breath taking and it makes me want to go back...back...to the Darkest Dungeon.
Lore speed run: the ancestor was an asshole with a pinch of eldrich gods.
I like the necromancers accent. I love the other performances too.
But then wouldn't the death of the countless human enemies count to the sacrefice?
@@SSFplayer2 possibly. Though it could also be that lives of a certain qualify are required to complete the ritual.
@@nathanielthomson6600 fair
@@SSFplayer2 another fact worth considering is that if you take more than a year to face the heart of darkness on blood moon you also automatically lose the run. So it's not necessarily that the lives of the heroes were needed but that their deaths can accelerate the completion of the ritual. Which would suggest that not all lives are equal in the eyes of the ritual.

Why... the fuck is this disliked, VO work is very very well done and the lore is accurate, the art work done using the assets are all fitting too so just why? Well done all who worked on this
This might be the best history for a so ambiguous game I have ever seen.
Holy smokes, this was so well produced and voiced! Awesome!

i really like it how it shows all his screw up connecting one to another in an chronological order. but it make you wonder, the duchess was already a monster before hand, that would imply that there are others and how her blood gave the ancestor a vision of the old ones. She could be connected to them as well.
Wonderful Video! Everyone did an amazing job!
if the hearth wanted blood, couldnt he just send the undead army over the townsfolk or the brigands?
i think that the countess is a being that used to be part of the beings that live in the heart of darkness, perhaps a parasyte of some kind.
My theory is he committed suicide to become one with the heart and inherent its power, and in doing so, lost control of his undead army. So they just follow his last orders: defend the manner.
Anyone entering the manner has to deal with the spooky scary skeletons, but the skeletons will never leave the manner.

4:10 and 5:30
This seems wrong though.
@@MiskatonicMemorialist "...why serve it to his guests?"
Why not?
The Ancestor - at this time - is a slave of hedonistic impulse. Most people such as him, and the rest of the court were people who liked to "experiment" out of boredom.
Sure, he could drink it alone, but if he enjoyed his pleasures alone, then why would he have the court in the first place? Hence it makes sense for him to "share" this new experience rather than doing so alone.
"...I assumed it was by accident."
As I looked more into it, yeah. It does seem more like an accident indeed. I imagine he was taking the glass to his lips just as it all began, and he accidently "kissed" his drink (as we commonly refer to, in my country, when someone takes the most gentle of sips). :p
"The hypocrisy part I'm not sure I understand..."
I worded things poorly, so I am to blame on this one.
@KRIMZONMEKANISM
We put the caveat of "Perhaps" as to his reasoning, since there are alot of theories about why he did what he did, because it was such a weird thing to do.
I will say that him being bored was definitely the cause for a majority of problems. So it's definitely a possibility that he did just want to engage in some light hearted cannibalism. (Victorians am I right :p)
My theory was that he just wanted to humiliate his peers in a sadistic prank, given the degeneracy of the Court, and since he hated most (if not all) of them, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Like how summed up the ending by explaining lesson. Quit while your ahead for the truth may not always set you free, but instead can entrap you.
Absolutely magnificent performance for the characters and outstanding explanation of the lore.
I was glad to see interest on the game, but after seeing the sheer quality of the video I am no less than overjoyed!
