I’, in my late 50s, I was lucky to be raised by parents with eclectic tastes in music. I grew up listening to so many of the Big Band great. Best of all Mom took my sister and me to see Benny Goodman at the Kennedy Center in the late 70s.
Over his marvelous career of playing Benny did one thing, he got better. Played classical music and improved technique. What a beautiful gentleman and artist!
He was studying up until the day he died, trying to become even better than he already was (how is that possible?!). The obits said he was found in his studio with his clarinet at his side and sets of exercises on a music stand.
Great music I never saw Benny but he was my idol. I played the clarinet but the reed holder hit my chin then I saw that Benny turned it around and that solved the problem. Love it.
It was a sad day indeed when B.G. passed from this world to the next but he left so many of us with pure joy. He will never be forgotten. Love that man.
Agreed....those talented hands have to be durable as leather to keep plucking 4 of those plump perfect notes to one bar after another - with no frets on that long neck to guide them - and you're right: it's largely a thankless job! But how thin things would sound without that rich throbbing foundation!
Many of us do appreciate it. Should the bass amplification suddenly fail to work, then anybody would realize how much bass lines contribute to the music. What would be left would instantly loose most of its meaning (a common experience to those who played in - or just attended reharsals of - ill-equipped juvenile bands). And a well-conceived bass line is as much a treat to the ears as it is any phrase from any other instrument.
Grew up listening to Benny and the band at our house as a kid. One of those rare artists where you hear just a few notes and know who it is. And Teddy on the Piano! Wow.

This is from the era when Benny and I saw the same orthopedic surgeon, in NYC, Dr. Frank Stinchfield. We happened to be there the same day, with Benny's appointment right before mine. As Dr. Stinchfield knew I was heading to college to major in clarinet, he told Benny he should stay to meet me. Dr. Stinchfield's quote, "Benny Goodman was JUST sitting in the chair you are now sitting upon. He doesn't like children, and went out the back door, quickly, so you didn't see him in the waiting room." Needless to say, I was very sad.
