Years ago, on our way home to LA from Las Vegas, my wife's mother, aunt and uncle were in the back seat. All had recently been widowed. A high desert station was playing music from the Big Band Era. Occasionally looking back in the rear-view mirror, I saw three bodies, but they were decades back in time, reliving the happier, youthful days of their lives with their now deceased spouses. It was a very quiet ride through the desert. In the years since all three have rejoined their spouses. But, in those few hours past and present met.
Greetings from South Africa. I'm 25 years old (I was born blind) and this music beats all this modern stuff any day! I've listened to both Benny's and Glenn's version of Sunrise Serinade and I have to say I love them both.
I grew up on these magic swing bands of Benny Goodman Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey. You just cannot beat this stomp swing. Brings back so many memories of my mum and dad during the war years. I cannot keep still when I hear these great swing bands , and wish the swing era would come back today. It is cool music. Excellent stuff.
Thank you! ..I absolutely love this music from my parents generation...I never fully appreciated it until I reached my 60's. And now I cant get enough of it. And your talented band played it perfectly..❤❤
What a fabulous evening of awesome entertainment. My favorite, Glenn Miller. The musicians did a magnificent job showcasing both Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman with their musical artistry. Great concert. 😁😁😁
I have listened to this and watched it over and over for a few years. It is my happy spot. They give such a great performance with class but with some sly fun installed. John Packer does a fine job of keeping the crowd engaged and the musician into the feel of the show. Wish this would come back around the mid west.
Not even 50... but these bands take me back to my childhood sitting with my daddy (my grandpa) and listening to his music from his times and the waltzes he'd listen to from his mom's time. ❤❤❤❤❤♥️
My father in Law Introduce me to this magnificent Sound of Music, Man they had it going on it must of been a fabulous time to grow up in the 40s and 50s and 60s when this was played on the radio this music always lifts my spirits and makes me grateful for the people like my father in Law Donald Jasper who shared their love of this music I think it was his secret to always being a Happy fellow he always had a big smile on his face God Rest His soul
A little over a year ago my band director introduced me into the world of jazz with Benny Goodman’s “Life Goes To A Party”. I fell in love with this music and started learning how to play jazz guitar. Benny Goodman and his music holds a very special place in my heart and this video brings be so much joy. Thank you.
Wow ...benny goodman was sooo good...it would not be ok.to say Benny was best of Big Band sound Its unbelievable that their so much competition at his level was alive at the same time....Wow!!!
Wow what a fabulous concert. Really this is much more than a concert-- it is a full blown study of two standard bearers of the jazz era. Two styles, two great sets. Amazing that they were able to reproduce this concert to such exacting standards.
One of the best Swing Orchestras in the World. Wonderful Sound! Authentic and not too modern. Thanks to the whole band for this nice and swinging evening.
Greetings from Mexico City. This concert is truly fabulous. If those gifted musicians had played in any theatre in Mexico, the audience would have started dancing immediately! They are my parents' favourite tunes! Congratulations!
This was a most enjoyable concert. These men (of ALL ages) just played with their hearts. They are so "into" the songs of those years. I loved the whole thing and it's great music to listen to if you're doing office work, housework, playing with the baby, having a cup of coffee by the fireplace, having friends over or making "whoopee" with your husband/wife. SYLVIA - FL - 10-8-2018
Both my Dad and my Granddad would have loved this. Then throwing in that touch of English humour polishes this off perfectly for this Crazy Brit, now living in California. Thank you John and all the band members.
Great show! Nice to hear an unamplified band -- it sounds so much warmer. Drummer is great. Band plays clean and stylistically on point. Lots of bands play this stuff with much less authenticity and success.
Wonderful! They play actual vintage instruments! They kept the sound like it was back in the day. Pete's banter is funny and also quite educational. Great presentation, Pete! You nailed it!
All this vile ignorant criticism this band live were incredibly good and the talent of Pete Long there for all to see ,this is jazz/swing and banter and hollering all part of the very entertaining repertoire of jazz/swing well done thank you Pete Long and your very professional band and your king of erotica singer! excellent .
I'm 14 and can't get enough of this music same with classic cars phones anything from the 20s 30s 40s 50s and 60s not so much the 70s and these smartphones I can't work them people as school take the piss out of me because I like good music by I don't back down to them
At home, my wife and I had a great evening swing dancing to this!!! I could never SIT through the evening. Swing is for dancing. It is not sitting and listening music. Your dancing is part of the experience of Swing. What you moves you make on the dance floor is your interaction to the sound. With a live band the people on the dance floor feed into the playing. I would change the location, pull the chairs and get everyone out dancing! Ya I know that Goodman and Miller did some concerts, but Swing is made for dancing.
Sorry, for some of us, dancing is out. When my knees went, so did my dancing (and I learned all the stuff back in the seventies at good ole' Arthur Murray). Now, all I can do is tap my feet. Even standing for a long time hurts. I wish I could still swing. But now it's all done from a chair.
I was very blessed to have parents who were in their 20's during this rage of music, thus I grew up in house were SWING was glorious glorified! I was one of 2, well maybe 4, in my graduation class who had any idea who, what and why there was SWING! My mom's older sister taught me how to swing as we often found odd hall rentals where a Big Band was playing. I'm 57 now. Those days of dancing with someone who lived it is gone for me BUT still I'm always looking for a big band to enbrace and SWING.
my experience as well my parents were both born in the 20's and I in 59 so a big gap - we had all the records of this era and they were great dancers - used to love watching them dance
I remember school in the eighties a random swing band appeared in our assembly hall . We the kids were like awe this is going to be shit. Anyways they start playing and man a wall of sound and the swing they played so infectious wee the kids were amazed and cheered them not to stop it was brilliant . if you get the chance to see a swing band live take it you will remember it all your life. Both Benny Goodman and glen miller special can't say who was the best it swings both ways lol god bless em.
excellent! great dynamics, great clarinet work, great sax section, drummer knows how to kick a big band around, great band very well rehearsed tight and polished, a treat to listen to.
Hello, what a fantastic orchestra and the sound is heaven. Yes, that's it. A Great Orchestra with terrific musicians. Everyone knows the swing style we really like. And the drummer Ed Richardson is the new Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich of that swing era. I really like what I can hear and see with my eyes here. Thanks for this wonderful upload. And please give us more and more ... With nice greetings from Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Serious?? Wrong left hand techique for true swing that requires a much faster left hand- impossible with overhand. Pedestrian at best. Stick to playing post Beatles era. Check out Krupa & Rich on any of the material available on TH-cam and you should see what I mean. Watch the speed of their left hands.
So much criticism I have read here. I just enjoyed this performance for what it was. I loved the drummer and the clarinet player was very amusing. I would have loved to be there.
you silly old person. this kind of selfish attitude is killing the planet. big ships for rich retired people. you don"t care but my daughters deserve a chance. shame on you. i"m sure you"re ok though.
Absolutely fantastic! I loved it. What a superb group of musicians. I lived through the Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller years and can tell you that these guys are their equals. Audio and video qualities outstanding! Thanks so much!
These people are really good, They just need to add six more trombones, Six more Trumpets, and ten more Saxophones, Their sounds are almost perfect! Still these musicians really know how to make this music sound nice! Good Job.

And, what a great time you would have. Morals were better (not so many single women with children, murder and abuse of children), kindness, thoughtfulness, and loving God are some of the things you would find in those years. Also, education, automobiles were better built and had class, a dollar bought a whole lot more, too. I could go on and on, but you probably already know the good things about those years. Oh, yes, they had wars as in today. But, overall it was better back then. SYLVIA- FL -10-08-2018

The audience can be as much a part of the music as the musicians themselves. Ask anyone on stage, a dead audience equals a dead performance.

I grew up with this and the US Navy band on the old victrola converted to a hi fi playing on Saturday morning.
How can such a good band play in such a small theathre, they DO deserve much much more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two of the all-time greats of Big Band music.
I remember dancing on my dad's feet to this fantastic melody. Yeah, he played a sax at one time in a band.
A great performance, although many listeners may not realize it, we had the privilege of listening to very well trained talented musicians.
