    This 7.3 Medium Duty may not have the same grunt as the optional 6.7 Powerstroke, but I would argue this gasser is more reliable for the owners who purchase them, with less likely the chance of being stranded due to emissions after-treatment components failing. Also, overall lower cost of ownership. Easier to maintain. It's also a great payload truck...weighs less than the 6.7 diesel, but still has the 19,500 GVWR. Can't tow as much as the 6.7, but not everyone needs to tow 15,000+ with a dump.

    • @mmiller1188
      @mmiller1188 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It'll be popular. With all of the emissions problems on the modern diesels, I wouldn't even consider one. You can let this idle all day with the heat or AC on and won't have to worry about messing up the emissions equipment. And what can go wrong with it? A single injector on a modern diesel is not cheap ... and forget thinking about replacing any emissions components for under 5 figures

I weighed these trucks in that configuration and even with a diesel they weigh about 11,500 so with a gas being a thousand pounds less it's probably around 10,500.

    TFL >>> A question for you Andre ... have you noticed, and do you know, if the F-450 and above ~F-550 ~etc are lifted? They appear taller than other SuperDutys. Is it just an illusion because of the narrow tires on the duallies or is there something really there? Thank you, great video.

    • @RiverValleyLandscaping
      @RiverValleyLandscaping 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dump body has a gridwork of rectangular tubing below it that then sits on top of the trucks frame, you basically have atleast 4 inches of dump body tubing height sitting on top of the trucks normal frame... then add in 20” wheels and tires plus super stiff leaf springs and you get a taller looking truck

    Love the review of the Dump truck I wish you would do highway run with a gas and Diesel with say 6000lbs in the bed and go a mpg comparison. Maybe add a 14,000lb trailer behind and do that gauntlet mountain run with it as well to compare the various dump trucks. I had a hard time making a decision on a new F550 dump truck today and ended up going gas over diesel, but some performance and economy number in a review might have made that a easy decision. I hated how Ford neutered the Powerstroke in the chassis trucks and really took its big power advantage away making the Godzilla a more attractive option if you don't use it a lot and want to keep pricing down.

  • @DylanMitchell

    Great review. I always picture a camper on the back of those medium-duty trucks. Any of the medium duties have rear air suspension or full air suspension options from the factory?
    Are fleets more likely to spec the 6.2 V8 over the 7.3 V8? Some were speccing the V10 maybe the 7.3 will fill a niche for heavier hauling or the doesn't want to get passed by an old VW bus going uphill crowd?

    Nice truck, but the speed of that electro-hydraulic dump system is waaaay too slow, at least it would be for me. I thought the F-550 could or does have a PTO option for it's transmission.
    I'd prefer to have a full hydraulic PTO driven hydraulic dump. ( but it sure beats shoveling it out by hand )

    Interesting! -- QUESTION -- Your explanation for the different power rating for commercial vs consumer engine is a bit confusing. At first it was that there are different rating requirements but you make is sound like they are the same power but, for silly reasons, they announce a different number because they count it differently. I don't think that is correct - the engines are actually producing different power in a real sense and they do this for practical reasons (which you never explain).

      Our fleet of 550s and 5500s has slowly become all gassers. Cheaper upfront cost and they last long enough now we can send them to auction when they hit their age/mileage limit. Sadly that means we have to fight a bit to have 1 or 2 diesels in the fleet for serious towing. Having that engine braking is nice.

      @@jonallsop6268 I had a 1975 C10, heavy half with a spring job in the back to 12 leafs. That could go 3500 once in a while. The GMC C35 I had after that was much better with the weight. It had a 14 bolt full floating axle and E rated tires.

    The thing does not weight 14,000 empty. I have a 5500 ram Cummins regular cab 11 ft dump bed and empty weight is 11,000 this benign regular cab 9ft bed and gas motor it’s no more than 10,500. And 4000lbs it’s nothing on a 5 series truck I haul 5 ton 10,000 lbs in my ram and it doesn’t struggle with the Cummins.

    A few things you could pass on to ford if you would. I own several f550s . Things they need to consider changing. The first thing. Is the wheel studs. Use bigger studs. I have broken a lot of them and know of many others that have had then break to the point of the wheels coming off. A straight rail frame don’t taper it over the rear axle. Raise the height of the frame from the ground. Raise the cab 6 inch’s. This would help with a couple things. When you have to work under it and help get it up so it’s somewhat out of the salt zone. And it would free up some space around the pto. And pump. And a real parking break. My 550s get worked hard and stand up pretty well. If ford really wants to test one let me have it for the winter plowing roads

    Junk. I got two GM 1 ton dumps from the sqaure body era. My 76 GMC weighs in at at around 6000lbs. 10k gvw so i can haul 4k no issues and do all the time. I don't have the power but i have the gearing. Ol SM465 granny gear moves anything.
    Electric over hydraulic is SLOW.
    I would have that dumped and bed down in way less time. Mechanical PTO will dump anything.
    Oh it cost $2500. How much is this Ford?

    • @tacomas9602
      @tacomas9602 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This truck is $45,000. Your old GM might be tough, but it's slower. Less power, less gears, etc.
