I do recommend to rent apartments from agency’s. You are able to pay “garanti” instead of “deposit” - which have dramatically difference in price. And you are able to change, paint and decorate you’re apartment instead of renting from some private landlord :) I do recommend heimstaden or leiebolig!
I've been living and renting places in Oslo for little over 20 years now. You had everything spot on! Love it! Grate job. But I would add one thing. The prices in Oslo are high, but so is sallery too... If you have a full time job and rent a normal place outside Ring 3 you gonna have a good time and money to spend on things. But if you have a part time job and rent down town... you gonna be broke every month. So it very important to choose where in Oslo you gonna rent based on your job/travel time and so on. For ppl with limited start, rent just outside Ring 3 and close to the "travel" hubs. Skøyen, Alna, Storo. Grate places and easy to get around and a bit cheeper then downtown.

Ring 2 in the middle... and the outermost is Ring 3. Outside Ring 3 things usually gets a bit cheeper because its not "Downtown crazyness". But its still only 10min tram down town. I myself live by Ring 3 at Storo. Its quiet and nice, cheeper then down town. Takes 25min walk by river or 10-15min tram/buss to get downtown.

WAIT there's an important notice it's very important. 1st of all Norwegian citizens get a National deduction rent to rent prices. Compared to those without. And since April 20th people can get this with duel citizenship, as long as on of those are Norwegian citizenship. Secondly there is also the option of Air BNB's. These are very inexpensive as they have entire packages, including cleaning, electrical, washing, etc for barely 152NOK a day. An inner Oslo this could go up to 250NOK. They're usually all flat rate. The second thing is this if someone really wants to rent Norway has estate agencies that deal with all the paperwork and then they come along for the visiting time to get accurate information across. However they usually charge a small fee of 30% commission. Oh also students, this includes any form of schooling/university course; they tend to get a deduction or there are student dorms. This is useful because of course it helps when one speaks fluent Norwegian. Especially in the Visiting. Oslo tends to be more lenient on the English speaking people and the western side of Norway. But overall I think you're right Mon yes!!!! :)

I'm moving to Oslo next month from the UK and I'm am wondering what to do about quarantine. How easy will it be to get a temporary apartment for one month so that I can stay for the 10 day quarantine, then spend 20 days searching in person (so I can do the viewing) Is it possible to get a short 1-2 month rent? Are they common? I don't have a Norwegian bank account yet and cannot get one until I go to the bank in person, which would be after I have moved. What are my options? Thanks!
Hey! I think that's gonna be super tough... 😬 But July is the "summer vacation month" for Norwegians, so you'll maybe find something on Finn for a short renting. But without having a Norwegian bank account and not being here I'm not sure how you are going to do it. Maybe try to rent on Airbnb?

In America we call a lybel "basement living" and Rekkehus "condominium" or "condos" and Tomannsbolig "Townhouse" I hope this help.
