These two schools are for different people. I was depressed when I lived in LA (3 years - No trees, no green for 3/4 of the whole freaking year) finally go to Bay Area and love it. Fun fact, UCSF was part of Cal as medical department and UCDavis was Cal Farm department. So...we have more history and that's why UCB doesn't have a medical school. This is the kind of sweeping generality that UC Berkeley students resort to in comparison between the two universities. Additionally, Berkeley students will state the following: - UC Berkeley students have significantly better stats (grades and test scores). “Berkeley is a billion times harder to get into.” As recent as seven years ago, there would have been a decent-sized gulf between the qualifications between the two universities’ students, but the gap is closing readily, because in the last 10 years to now, UCLA has raised its freshman-class gpa and test scores significantly. UCLA is actually harder to which to gain entry now in the admissions process, but for those who enroll, Berkeley with a tad better yield, has a bit higher test scores, but UCLA has a little higher grades as its students come in with a bit more advanced-placement courses. - “UC Berkeley has the way better Engineering and Computer Science programs.” Berkeley’s E&CS certainly has a higher ranking based on faculty publications and research, but UCLA’s is rising fast and is better funded. UCLA late last year received a $100m donation from the namesake of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and because of this and other funding, its engineering programs are climbing the rankings. The University is currently hiring 100 additional Engineering faculty and is looking to increase its undergrad E&CS programs to greater than 5,000 from its current ~ 4,000, and thereby become more STEM oriented. The grades and test scores of incoming UCLA E&CS students are every bit as ascended as Berkeley’s and may be a bit higher because UCLA up to now has had an even more restrictive enrollment process in E&CS. And UCLA is definitely closing the gap between those who choose between the two universities for these programs. Your Berkeley representative said at 9:40, that there were numerous Berkeley-student interns at the Bay tech concerns based on his experience, “but only one or maybe two from UCLA.” If he did his internship during the school year, this would be understandable. But if one looks on social media, there doesn’t appear to be a dearth of UCLA E&CS interns at the Bay tech-companies during the summer, say, when they’re back home (also is as well understandable), and I’m sure that with its stepped-up image and high-quality E&CS students, it will lead to a lot more, but it has definitely appreciated in the number of gained internships at the techs, for certain. As far as Berkeley and UCLA for studying business as undergrads, certainly Berkeley Haas is outstanding - it’s considered the best undergrad business school in the country. UCLA’s Anderson GSM offers courses for undergrads, but it doesn’t offer an undergrad Business Administration degree as Haas does, at which Berkeley undergrads apply prior to their junior years. UCLA has Business Economics, in which one does the same in the application process, and it is highly selective also, but it isn’t as tough to gain entry as Haas. Both have outstanding consulting and investment-banking clubs, with UCLA stepping up its clubs and the resultant students’ internships more recently. Both universities produce its share of attorneys. UCLA leads in the state of California for most licensed attorneys by a decent amount over Berkeley, but both lead by an extremely large amount over the third ranked university, USC, by a good 2-3 times. UCLA does produce more MDs: in 2018 over 550 UCLA baccalaureates enrolled in medical school; for Berkeley it was greater than 350. UCLA produces a lot more dentists and pharmacists as is evident. But Berkeley produces more science researchers and PhDs in a wider array of fields: humanities, social sciences, as well as physical and life sciences. The bottom line, though, is both are outstanding universities, and there are Berkeley kids and UCLA kids. UCLA students are undoubtedly more sociable, but I don’t think Berkeley’s are more studious if that makes sense. As a UCLA student would say, “Study hard, play hard.” (I’m going to have to edit out the double spacing between my paragraphs, which youtube comments places in my comments.)
@@robjohnston366 I went to MIT. I have never attended Berkeley, but I would not have minded it if I went there. But I will never go to a school like UCLA if I were super smart and I can get into a more superior school like Berkeley, the Ivies, Stanford or MIT. UCLA is good. But it obviously isn't Berkeley's league.
@@rotneder2814 , you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but if you didn’t attend either university, you’re probably missing out - say, because of a lack of interest -- on the things to which you can probably relate as an MIT graduate that are occurring at UCLA. I can’t speak for Berkeley - I’m sure they’re incorporating many of the same things, but what UCLA is doing to bring informatics into fields like the social and life sciences, and even humanities, is excellent. The thing UCLA is trying to do in this age of information, is, to get persons who have had no desire to study coding and data structures to at least take an elemental course in it, short of requiring it, and also to open up Computer Science as a specialization to a wide array of majors (read: to those who aren’t accepted into the major). UCLA has created a separate set of CS courses that are pretty much available to all - there are various majors and minors of course that are CS-related and are thereby excluded: majors in Mathematics of Computation, Statistics, Data Theory (since DT is a major, UCLA wanted to incorporate more theory into its perusal instead of straight Data Science); minors in Bioinformatics, Digital Humanities, and Geographic Information Systems and Technology. UCLA also has an excellent major in Linguistics and CS. And good for you that you feel impelled to express your opinion so decidedly. But I believe that the originating-campus-of-the-state-of-California, flagship argument shouldn’t apply, because to the benefit of the state to the nation and undoubtedly the world - as seen by the popularity of both in the other forty-nine states and all over the globe -- there are two world-class public institutions in this state (… and the other seven UCs aren’t slouches either). And the great thing is that Berkeley and UCLA are completely different: semester (three terms, Hafu) v. quarter (also called “trimester” if one excludes summer); social life; on-campus living; food; weather; etc. Sorry for the quasi-thesis, take care.
i was literally just scrolling through youtube and thinking i need a new hafu video of campus crawl and then saw this in my subscriptions BLESS😍love this channel so much!!
Got accepted to Cal but waitlisted at UCLA. Although almost every ranking that I've looked at has UCB slightly above UCLA, I will say that factors like campus life, weather, and social activities at UCLA are very attractive. I think the main reason that UCB would be ahead is due to its academics and career opportunities. Of course, all rankings may be subject to bias and are likely to change over time.
UCB has the stronger history and better name when it comes to academics. UCLA only started winning recently in terms of freshman class test scores and university rankings.
asiansilencer UC Berkeley is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 universities in USNEWS Global University Ranking while it is underestimated in the National University Ranking. UCLA is absolutely not comparable to UCBerkeley in most of fields, but UCLA is still a very good school.
@@user-tn7qj7mj2l That ranking is based almost entirely on PHD programs and research output, a criterion in which Berkeley wipes the floor with UCLA. For undergraduates and some medical grad students, UCLA is the better choice.
Bionic Potato UCLA only became better on national ranking 2 years ago, and as you said, ranking is biased and people all know that UCLA paid for a higher ranking - would you believe UCLA could be truthfully ranked 18 last year and 20 this year? It is true UCLA is better on medicine, but UCB’s Business, Law, Engineering and some other major schools are a lot better than UCLA. UCLA is not top for most of the fields that it practices in but UCB is.
@@user-tn7qj7mj2l UCLA is ABSOLUTELY comparable if not better than Berkeley in most fields. Berkeley may be better in some while UCLA is better than other. The national rankings are for UNDERGRADUATE education. The top 5 rankings you are referring to mainly pertains to grad school. Berkeley has over 70 years on UCLA but UCLA is giving Berkeley a run for its money. ucla is in the top 10 and I won't be when it catches up to Berkeley in MLK most graduate rankings. With that being said, this video is talking about undergrad education, and in that regard UCLA beats Berkeley on almost every count.
UCLA is better to commute to and better infrastructure. Also, being LA, whatever ethnicity you are, you can find your home food easily. Neighborhood surrounding Berkeley seemed so small and jam packed. cant imagine driving there when students are walking around all the time
UC Davis alum here and a bay area native, every UC alum knows Berkeley is the smart , savvy sibling, UCLA is the attractive one that just needs to marry well.
@Sudhir Kakar really cuz im from the Yay and i don't see any bruin grads working right now and for the past 8 years in palo alto . Also being in health care i see maybe two bruin alums in our residency programs about every 5 or 6 years. so kinda basic.
Sudhir Kakar and you sound like an unemployed loser who wishes he could get into a UC but got denied. Tech sales lemme guess you work for boost mobile. Management is for people who can’t hustle well enough to own their own business. Keep trolling fool
Sudhir Kakar You are such a frickin grouch man. Just live up to the fact that UCLA is better. Just because you have a sibling that goes to UCB doesn't make it better. I live halfway around the world and know LA to be better than UCB. Not to mention, casual racism too, get a hold of yourself dummy
I would go to UCLA than Berkeley even though Berkeley is more prestigious. The main reason is the weather and the school life and the beautiful campus. But Berkeley is a far better choice when it comes to landing a solid paying jobs.
As a computer science major, Berkeley is supposedly the better fit for me. However, UCLA was always my dream school. And it's not like I will miss out on anything good that Berkeley offers, because if I wanted to do software internships from Silicon Valley, I can always do them remotely, while still enjoying my life in LA. Ultimately, how well the student succeeds doesn't depend on the school they choose to go to. Going to one over the other should not make the student any lazier. As long as they keep working hard, they will find the right job prospects and live a life they will enjoy
Hey I have the same issue UCLA has always been my dream school and now im so confused because academics for stem programs is better at cal but I’ve really wanted to go to ucla. Can you please give me suggestions 😭
@@shrustimehta8948 Dude I am in the same dilemma. Got into Berkeley EECS early and got into UCLA CSE. Though to be fair I haven't visited cal yet, I will be, but I already have a strong impression of UCLA (closer to home, i actually find to be a pro)
Well Done! I went to LA undergrad & B for graduate. I agree with all your choices. One issue is that I used to study at the Beach near Ucla. If Ucla changed to semester system, Ucla would be clearly the better choice for most students.
Can't change history: Berkeley is the original, the flagship while UCLA is and will always be "the Southern Branch". Good for Jocks but less so for academics.Being next to Hollywood is not a strong recommendation, by the way, Berkeley's health programs are now known as it's own campus, a little place called UCSF.
That's a ridiculous statement. Do you understand what it takes to get into UCLA? The admit rate for the Class of 2023 was 12%, and the average ACT composite was 30-35. That is a bit competitive to be a school for a bunch of jocks. Berkeley definitely has the edge internationally and for graduate school, but their undergrad education programs are neck and neck. Some people don't want to have to deal with duck syndrome or the insanely cutthroat atmosphere that comes with Berkeley. It comes down to which school is the right fit if you are an undergrad. There are legitimate arguments that can be made in favor of Berk over UCLA, but saying that UCLA is a school for "jocks" is a gross misrepresentation of the insanely qualified student body that worked hard to get the chance to attend.
There really is only one truth and its that UCLA is better at sports while UC Berkeley is better at academics. idk bout y'all but I chose academics lol Go Bears!
Both schools excellent. But academically UC Berkeley is better. Decades as number 1 public university (not just a few yrs in one for profit mag as ucla has been). Also UCB is known throughout the world.

One of these has as many top-ranked academic departments as Harvard and Stanford, one doesn't. One is associated with over 100 Nobel prizes, one isn't. One has an element named after it (Berkelium), one doesn't. UC Berkeley is the original University of California. The UCLA mascot is a bruin (AKA baby bear), which is a spin-off from the UC Berkeley golden bear. UCLA is great, but UC Berkeley is the obvious #1 public university in the WORLD and always will be.
@@legacyjeetkunedo492 UCSF is used to be UC Berkeley's medical department and UC Davis is used to be UC Berkley's agriculture. If you graduate from UCSF, the seal will say UC Berkeley-San Francisco.
UC Berkeley in a nutshell: Program Ranking English 1 Psychology 1 Economics 1 Sociology 1 Computer Science 1 Biological Sciences 1 Earth Sciences 2 Chemistry 2 Mathematics 2 Statistics 2 Public Affairs 4 Social Work 3 Clinical Psychology 3 Physics 3 Engineering 3 Political Science 4 History 4 Business 7 Public Health 8 Law 9 Fine Arts 15 They have a separate parking lot for Nobel Laureates for Fs sake and this school is all over the periodic table. UCLA is more comparable to Michigan, ut Texas, Virginia, etc. Berkeley is on par with the three top Ivies, stanford, mit, and cal tech if you eliminate dubious metrics like endowment and class sizes.
Why aren't scholarships and financial aid a category? I got into both of these schools, and Berkeley offered much more aid. I feel that they help their students cover tuition more than UCLA, so I still argue that Cal is number 1. Go Bears!
@@hannahyost3721 possibly. However I don’t think one should chose a school on the best FA. UCLA technically offers more aid as a percent of the total price of college. I did get 1000$ more in work study from Cal.... but the dorms are 8-15k more lol . I honestly think they are both great schools, and if I was going to do engineering or computer science Cal would’ve been the way to go, but for other majors I think they are equal. At a grad level Cal is definitely better, but at an undergrad UCLA invests more money in their students and access to resources. I really wanna go to grad school at Berk or SF so I chose UCLA to experience something different
As a Cal graduate it’s easily UCLA. The sole thing Cal has to offer is reputation, by a hair. A reputation based on US News rankings, in which UCLA has been the number 1 public school for 3 straight years. I don’t think this comparison is even fair to Cal lol. Better weather, better campus, better entertainment, more fun, and even higher rankings now at UCLA.
@Waddle . . . if I remember, you're the Biochemistry major (and probably premed)? UCLA has a great Bioinformatics minor, which of course melds biology with informatics, essentially CS and stats/data science. There's also a Computational and Systems Biology major. I recommend at least taking a PIC course, possibly a fallback in case med school isn't in the cards. You did a great job on the video, all the best!
Don’t understand how people think Berkeley is better because it came first. How does simply being older make it better? I think it’s a testament to UCLA’s superiority that it was able to rise to the same prestige as Berkeley despite Berkeley have a 50 year head start to establish its reputation
Yes, and they are either neck and neck with USC on the USNews.com rankings or leaving them in the dust on the World University rankings and they are the public school. Imagine if UCB did that to Stanford!
Andrew First off, I wouldn’t brag about creating a WMD. Second, lots of successful people attended Berkeley. At the same time a lot of successful people attended UCLA. I’m not gonna list off the names, however, because they’re irrelevant. There’s no way to prove those people were successful because of the school they chose. Even if they were, those accomplishments happened decades ago. The entire point of my post was that Berkeley started first and was better in the past, but it has now been surpassed by UCLA. In all the years prior to the most recent ones, UC Berkeley has always been ahead of UCLA. But last year, UCB was disqualified from the USNWR for submitting false stats, and this year UCLA is solidly ahead of UCB on that same list. The momentum is not on Berkeley’s side. But ty for admitting UCLA is a nicer place to chill and enjoy college
You can actually go to SF from Berkeley by train. If you want to get to DTLA or KTown you need to survive in a car through the 405 and 10 traffic 🤢 if you want to live in LA, USC is a better option…
the reason why I would choose ucla over berk would be because uc berkeley is like 25 minutes away from my house and its lowkey gonna feel like community college all over again. And ucla is far enough to be away from my parents lmao. Also berkeley seems cutthroat as hell and cold/rainy af.
Any jobs that UC Berkeley graduates get can be equally had by UCLA graduates. In fact if you add UCSD in this list, there is not much difference between UCLA and UCSD. The perception of UCLA may more attractive, because of Sports and longer history. However, if you look closely, UCSD’s achievement surpassed UCLA. UCLA and UCSD are equally solid. UCLA managed to produce 15 Nobel prize recipients during their 98 year history. On the other hand, UCSD’s existence is only 63 years, but UCSD surpassed UCLA, and already produced 20 recipients.
As somebody who is not a graduate of either university, I would say that California-Berkeley is far far far superior than UCLA. I think everyone in academia knows that. Kinds like Princeton is ranked higher than Harvard in the US News. But the majority would take Harvard over Princeton in a heart beat any day.
Hello there !. Here from Nepal. I find your content fun and informative. I finished my undergrad from Northeastern University. Thinking of doing masters sometime in the future. Therefore, could you please also do videos on comparison of how things are in graduate programmes. Thank you !!
UC Berkeley>>>>>UCLA. UC Berkeley is the OG, and UCLA is just a wanna be school. I chose Cal over C]UCLA, and it is the best decision of my life. Cal is elite af.
UCLA is ruled by its competitiveness. About 5 percent acceptance rate is no joke but UC Berkeley is very very good for 11-14 percent so even though UCLA won its Berkeley all day everyday.
I love watching these when I have zero interest of going to either school HAHA. (btw I acknowledge they’re both great schools, they’re just not for me)
UC Berkeley has repeatedly held the title for #1 public university in the nation for almost 20 consecutive years. Just because Ucla suddenly gets a boost a couple of years back doesn't make it a better university. Ucla students are just tired of always being 2nd to Cal, let them enjoy it. Berkeley is ranked #4 in the world behind Harvard, MIT, and Stanfurd. So in this rankings, Berkeley is certainly the #1 public university in the world. I happen to think Berkeley's campus is beautiful. Natural beauty that is under appreciated. Campus life is all up to the person. Go Bears!
I actually chose UCLA -- I think their undergrad programs are much better. I think rankings are pointless, but Cal used those same rankings to justify their position lol. Bruins!!!
Ohh god, stop comparing the pressure of the semester system vs the quarter system. Yes, semester is obviously longer but that DOESN’T mean you have more leisure time. I’m telling you, the course curriculum is packed within the 3.5 months!! And it is actually relatively fast!
I'm born and raised in Berkeley, but I'm a Harvardian (Alumnus of Harvard). US Berkeley is the number 1 college on earth for a reason, and that reason is the curriculum. UCLA has a beautiful campus, but zero view. Go to Berkeley as a grad student and see the sun set on the bay over the Golden Gate and San Francisco. Good luck beating that view. That being said, Berkeley is academic AF! This isn't just a contest between Berkeley and UCLA. This is Berkeley Vs the entire world for academia (the reason your at college). Berkeley is the top school on earth (above all schools including Harvard) because of its academic programs and diversity of academic programs. PA, Stanford can SAD! F Stanford! I'm not asian, but the reason I speak Cantonese is because I'm from Berkeley. I'm glad you had fun, but Berkeley is literally the top school in the world for the 7th year in a row. Respect to the big bad bruins but don't sleep on the Mighty mighty bears. But don't take my word for it: www.forbes.com/sites/madisonfernandez/2021/09/08/why-berkeley-is-number-one/
Yes UCLA is surrounded by all the tourist attractions, but in my experience, I traveled to LA twice or three times. I went to all the attractions I wanted to go. I just don't wanna go anymore, just because the traffic is hella bad and oh my god, at 7pm going somewhere that usually takes 15 min to go will take you more than 30 min to go via highway. its so frustrating. hands down the bay area the best #gobears im glad that i made the decision to go to uc berkeley over ucla and because of their extremely liberal opinions, you are always open to a lot of ideas; people are always open to talk about intellectual topics. you can't really find that in a lot of the public school like this to provide you crazy opportunities like this. and also, restaurants around berkeley are the best in the area. there are a lot of pros and cons FOR SURE. my list can just go on and on. on the other hand, kudos to UCLA has a beautiful campus (that's undeniable!). the campus design at berkeley is eeh -- too scattered lol (note: im a sociology major. so maybe in comparison, im more exposed to the liberal opinions part i believe.)
unpopular opinion, Berkeley campus is gorgeous (one of the reason I choose to go to Cal). Every building has a personality. I don't like campus that is too architecture uniform (Stanford, Harvard) I prefer those that are a bit quirky (Berkeley, San Diego, MIT). UCLA buildings are different enough so it's Ok.

The bottom line, though, is both are outstanding universities, and there are Berkeley kids and UCLA kids. UCLA students are undoubtedly more sociable, but I don’t think Berkeley’s are more studious if that makes sense. As a UCLA student would say, “Study hard, play hard.”
(I’m going to have to edit out the double spacing between my paragraphs, which youtube comments places in my comments.)
@@robjohnston366 UCLA vs USC are matches, neck-and-neck.
I can’t be the only one who thought they barely talked about ucb in the beginning
i was literally just scrolling through youtube and thinking i need a new hafu video of campus crawl and then saw this in my subscriptions BLESS😍love this channel so much!!
Hahahah I got you 😉
Got accepted to Cal but waitlisted at UCLA.
Sorry to break it to you but on a global scale ucla is better than cal

Yes but we're not dwelling in the past now are we? UCLA all the way
asiansilencer UC Berkeley is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 universities in USNEWS Global University Ranking while it is underestimated in the National University Ranking.

I would go to UCLA than Berkeley even though Berkeley is more prestigious.
The main reason is the weather and the school life and the beautiful campus.
But Berkeley is a far better choice when it comes to landing a solid paying jobs.
Far better choice? Wrong. Both are the same for job opportunities
What a coincidence. I saw Waddle filming some of these parts on campus and I went to middle school with Chris Jereza

Well Done! I went to LA undergrad & B for graduate. I agree with all your choices. One issue is that I used to study at the Beach near Ucla. If Ucla changed to semester system, Ucla would be clearly the better choice for most students.
Can't change history:
Berkeley is the original, the flagship while UCLA is and will always be "the Southern Branch". Good for Jocks but less so for academics.Being next to Hollywood is not a strong recommendation, by the way, Berkeley's health programs are now known as it's own campus, a little place called UCSF.
Ucsf is UC Berkeley?

@@jackm2377 i guess it depends which school likes what students best? It’s really interesting!
@@hannahyost3721 possibly. However I don’t think one should chose a school on the best FA. UCLA technically offers more aid as a percent of the total price of college. I honestly think they are both great schools, and if I was going to do engineering or computer science Cal would’ve been the way to go, but for other majors I think they are equal.
Agreed! UCLA right?
Amazing job Hafu and Go Bruins! 💙💛 🎉 #TeamLA

@Waddle . . . if I remember, you're the Biochemistry major (and probably premed)?
Andrew so what?
@@what-gr1lt Interesting. I didn't know UCB submitted false stats to USNWR.
You can actually go to SF from Berkeley by train. If you want to get to DTLA or KTown you need to survive in a car through the 405 and 10 traffic 🤢 if you want to live in LA, USC is a better option…

i'd highly recommend ucla over berkeley for quality of life
I love your videos Hafu!! Can u pls make more videos about UBC and other Canadian universities?
Pro UCLA!!! I have always loved UCLA so this might be biased but UC Berkeley is still a good school!
I think the results in the process is much more important than the final result~

UC Berkeley has repeatedly held the title for #1 public university in the nation for almost 20 consecutive years. Just because Ucla suddenly gets a boost a couple of years back doesn't make it a better university. Ucla students are just tired of always being 2nd to Cal, let them enjoy it.
