1988 Mariner 40 HP Boat Motor Startup

  • I only got a chance to run my boat 3 times last year, early in the season, so it's been pretty much an entire year since it was started. Here is the video I took of it's first startup. It was a little more picky about starting up than last year, but once it starts up, it runs like a Swiss watch!

    You only need to choke it the first tuen over not every time you turn the key.

    Watching him try and start it gave me mad anxiety. Nice old outboard tho👍

      The more you learn about these old motors, the better it gets. The point was really to show how good these old outboards were, and relatively easy they are to start. I've played around since then and found that exact sweet spot this likes and it fires off first time, every time now. Hard to believe this thing is over 30 years old.

    It seems like you are using too much choke. As soon as it popped and tried to start the first time it should be disengaged. Then hold the key in the cranking position until it starts. Nice video.

    only need to choke it once and do not open the throttle. once engine worms up open the choke and than you can open the throttle

    Nice motor. Shouldn't water be expelled from mid section too?

    Hey man do you think you could do an in depth over view of the motor? I had just branded a small 15ft with the same motor but this thing is a project to say the least.

    You need to let it crank for longer.

    I just bought a boat with this motor, was curious where you get parts from?

      I haven't actually had to buy parts for this other than spark plugs. I do need to replace the seals in the lower unit though and those are getting harder to find.

    I need a lower unit for this motor and can't find one anywhere.

      They are hard to find. I really need to replace the shaft seals in mine. They leak and water gets in so I have to replace the gear oil a couple of times a season. Reverse sounds like it's almost stripped out as well. You may be able to find a shop that can rebuild your lower unit for you. Look for some small boat shops in the area and have them start looking for you as well. The more eyes looking for something, the better.

      @@FloydNashFixItDad The sad thing is I work at a marine shop repairing props and gearcases. Still can't find one. Except i did find a new one for 2600$ which is insane. Mine was working perfectly before a rock finished it off permanently.

      I've learned a bit more since this one. If I prime it good with the bulb, use a tiny bit of throttle just to get he RPMs off idle, and choke it, it will bust right off first time every time. I only choke about 5 seconds and it's good for the whole day after that. For the age of this motor, I absolutely love it. It's so reliable.

    This guy don’t no how to start a outboard choke first fire then no choke then use reeves not putting it straight in to gear

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I do. The throttle on this has a button for neutral that doesn't work very well. If it's not in the water it doesn't matter though. Don't judge when you don't know the full story
