I fancy having a go from South Shields pier for mackerel but the problem is I cannot walk very far due to a knee replacement, and having fished South Shields pier once years ago, I seem to remember it was a very long walk along the pier! It looked like you were not very far along the pier, so can you fish for mackerel at the start of the pier? Thanks very much, being a local angler, I really like your videos
Hi Kevin, I was fishing just before the gate. Not far along from the carpark. The mackerel seem to be in the bay now so no need to go all the way up the pier. Other people were catching them from straight in front of the brigade hut right at the start of the pier. I seen a shot video on Facebook of people catching the mackerel from the walkway at the mouth of the river yesterday over high water thats directly across from North shields fish Quay might be worth a look having a fish from there for the mackerel. Good luck 👍
Hi I have just discovered a love for fishing what is the best rod and reel u would recommend for pier fishing please fab videos love watching them you were recommended by a friend xx
Hi Charlie, thanks. It depends what type of fishing you want to do from the pier. I mainly use my beach caster for bait fishing and a spinning rod for lure fishing. Okay if I pick your brains ? I have a 10' 60-80grm 2pc spinning rod with a 4000 size reel, and will be casting a 2oz weight on feathers. What line strength would you recommend ? I plan to use Mono.
The usual rule of thumb for line is 10lb of line for every oz of weight so if you plan on using a leader you would use 20lb then you can use lighter main line to cast further but if you are planning on using mono straight through without a leader I would say use 20lb mono just to be on the safe side. Hope that makes sense.
Feather rod, what size of rod is this ? Do you think 130m of 51lb braid with a 6oz weight on a beach caster is strong enough for a decent cast ? I normally use a mackerel rod with a 3oz weight but you can’t give it a right good chuck or it just snaps
It just depends on what breaking strain the line on the mackerel feathers is if it's 60lb or over then braid with a 60lb mono leader on should be fine for a 6oz weight.

are mackerel still out in September? taking the little brother out fishing on a pier sometime soon, havn't fished for years and i'm fishing around Blyth area. If not which type of fishing would you recommend for this time of year?
You need more weight mate. I’d do away with the spinner lures on a 10ft rod, especially if it’s a heavyweight beachcaster/sea rod. You need to try a few packets of mackerel feathers along with a 4-5 ounce weight to cast out far. At the minimum if the weather is gorgeous then you could go to down to a three ounce weight…. You blast it out and wait for it to touch bottom. You’ll feel it through the rod and line if you just touch the line as it’s sinking. Then work it back by winding in to bring it up to the surface and then allow to sink back down to bottom. If you fishing on the pier end then be extra cautious on letting it sink to bottom the closer you bring it in to the pier wall.or you’ll get a snag, your aiming for just bouncing it off bottom. Goodluck on catching mate I love fishing down there just hope it reopens soon whilst the Mackey are still about. Also when I first arrive to my fishing spot at the pier… or any mark tbh try fishing closer in to begin with. You never know what fish are just at your feet. I caught a mega coley down the pier a couple month back and it was just over the edge. Got it on mackerel feathers jigging them up and down Just over the edge of the wall
@@TheRealColt Thankyou mate and yeah I definitely do need a weight on I cant really cast out far without one I have feathers and a 4 oz weight I'll try that 👍

Great vid Gary ,lovely setting ,do you have much problem with braid twisting ? I fished Whitby last week ,got a few Mackerel ,but line kept twisting and Knotting up 🤯
Hi pal .you need to soak your braid in warm water for a few hours or better still overnight. If you have put your braid straight on the spool its dry & will twist & knot whilst casting. Hope this helps .
Thanks mate 👍 I havent had a problem with the braid twisting try what Jonathan suggested if that doesn't work try using a swivel at the end of your leader and clip the lure to that, it should take the twist out of your line.

Hi Gary, thanks. Your best bet for low water spinning will probably be off the end of roker pier, its not far from shields but gets quite busy this time of year. I would of usually suggested shields pier but they have closed it because of the mess that's been left behind. You can still fish the start of the pier upto the gate over high water. You could also try the corners of little haven beach at first and last light I've had mackere from the beach there over low water at dusk from the pier side of the beach. Good luck 👍

@@TheRealColt Thankyou mate and yeah I definitely do need a weight on I cant really cast out far without one I have feathers and a 4 oz weight I'll try that 👍
What an ace morning fishing mate !! Love watching your fishing videos.
I caught my first ever mackerel last week. Looking forward to getting more than 1 per session 🤣
Thanks mate 👍
Whats your setup for big rod
I think it was 30lb braid on a 5000 size reel.
@@jonathoncoates9170 thanks very much for the advice 👍🏻
What season does it start in
Usually June or July.
You should use the spinner as the weight for the feathers
Or a Dexter
do you kill the fish before putting it in the cooler bag?
Yes, its always best to dispatch them as quick as possible.
@@fishingintheukgarywood how do you kill them?
A knock on the head or by pushing the head back is the quickest way.
@@fishingintheukgarywood thanks, went fishing for mackerel today one of the first times, but unsurprisingly was unsuccessful in catching anything. Do you think that going early in the morning really helps?
I am trying to collect all much nuggets of information that I can to improve my fishing skills.
Btw your videos are really good. Keep it up.👍
Hey a quick tip when you get 1 in the hook let it be for like 5 seconds so you catch 3 at the same time
When a mackrel hits your feathers, it pays to leave it in place for a couple of seconds. You may cach more in one go that way.
Damn they're nice sized mackerel. I'm still waiting for the mackerel to show here in Dublin. I'm getting decent pollack wrasse and plaice, but I need my favourite sea fish.
Thanks Declan, yeah they get quite big around here. Hopefully they show around your area soon for you.
Where in Dublin ye getting plaice lad

Hi Gary, great content as always! Me and the my youngest will be around Shields in the next week, any tips on low water marks for spinning? We’ll be there for just 3 Days so want to make the most of all of the fishing opportunities. Thanks and keep adding the vids.
Good luck 👍
@@fishingintheukgarywood hi Gary just read N&S piers to reopen 10th Aug following extensive clean up operation!
Excellent, I hope they do.
Where you’re fishing please location?🙏
