    At approximately 6:10 you can notice that the black nut to secure tighten the leather wheel is kind of shaking/ wobbling .
    Is actually doing the same thing on my T-8 and the leather wheel wobble aswell .
    I read on the tormek community that others customers had the same problem.
    Is it normal? There is something we have to do to fix on our own or we have to send it back to repair?

    My shop is not temperature controlled at night, and it gets well below freezing. If my stones are water soaked, will they crack in freezing temperatures? If so, is it possible to substitute mineral oil for water to avoid those problems?

    • @goforbroke2
      @goforbroke2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep my T8 in my garage and it has dipped below freezing here at night. I will say after I’m done sharping I don’t live the stones submerged in the water trough and the stone dries out pretty fast.

      @@goforbroke2 Thank you for the reply. In Chicago we frequently go below 0F (-18C) and I am afraid if the stone isn't totally dry, I will end up with a crack. I tried the mineral oil and it worked, but splashed a lot. I might try anti-freeze/water next.

    I had a situation with my T-8 where the EZ-lock (I know it is left-hand thread!) was about impossible to remove. (I bought it from Orchard Supply & Hardware where they had used it to sharpen customer tools.)
    The only non-destructive thing that worked was HEAT plus Lubricant! I got a magnetic induction coil heater (made in China) and after a few heat and cool cycles I would put a few drops of Automatic Transmission Fluid on the threads. It still took one of my Knipex wrenches on the EZ-lock nut.
    I thought the nut had rusted to the shaft. But there was NO RUST. The problem was that grit (from the stone) had washed into the threads and become lodged between the nut and shaft. It was very surprising to me how much grit (like sand) was in there. Apparently enough of it gets suspended in the water and some of it gets carried over the rotating stone and then down across the axle shaft.
    I was quite relieved to get my T-8 back in operation.

    Hi,
    I have the Supergrind 2000. Still runs great. Question about the supergrind stone. It was cutting quickly. I then polished the stone with the sp-650 grader. It polishes my chisels but no longer cuts quickly. How do I fix this issue?

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear your machine still does the job! Hope it will last you many years to come :) Regarding your question, there are two sides of the SP-650 Stone Grader, one smooth and one coarse side. To get the aggressiveness back, use the coarse side of the stone grader, and you can get back to 220 grit :) Hope this helps. Stay sharp!

      I've always thought this is a typo in the manual, because the page 123 shows setting 25 degrees on a single-bevel chisel the same way as the page 54 shows setting 25 degrees on the double-bevel knife. Cannot be the same way for single-bevel blade and double-bevel blade. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    With the diamond wheels, is it doable to go from the coarse grit straight to the 1200 grit, or do you recommend that the 600 grit be used if time is not a major concern?

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not possible without further modifications and it's not recommended. Having two wheels with the same diameter will also limit the space when sharpening. That's why the leather honing wheel is a smaller size than the grinding wheel. Stay Sharp!

    Hi Tormek. I have a Japanese waterstone and I have experienced that when sharpening knifes with the SVM-45 the knife can catch on the stone and leave a scar. What do I do wrong? Kind regards Håkon

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hej Håkon, This catch happens when you lift the knife to high at the tip and end up in a very aggressive angel to the stone, even as we mentioned not have rounded of the edges of the stone and you come not parallell to the stones surface. Another reson is when you slide with the jigg upwards and loosing the contact with the Universalsupport or use to much pressure during sharpening. When you have a smal chip in your stone, you have a higher risc to get excactly on that spot another catch. To avoid that and you feel unsecure you can sharpen from the horizontal position and sharpening edge trailing. I hsarpen myself only against the rotation and get cought twice in a 8 yerar period, but just therfore I was not concentrated on a show and wasn´t fully in control. So, when sharpening be focused, that was my lesson ;-)

    how often do the graind stone needs to be clean? And is it necessary to clean sdie of the graind stone? Is it possible by using the SP-650 freehand to cleaning on both surface?

    • @TormekSharpening
      @TormekSharpening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how much you are using it and what kinds of steels you are sharpening. So the answer would be whenever you experience the surface to be clogged up. But we are recommending to use the SP-650 Stone Grader quite often to keep the grinding surface fresh. And from time to time to also use the TT-50 Truing Tool to keep the grindstone flat and completely round.
      The side of the grinding wheel is not really necessary to clean. Unless you would like to make it look nice, of course ✨
      Good luck and Stay Sharp!

    I have a T8. The only problem I have had was losing that magnetic scraper. Permanently glue a magnet on the tray and put your scraper / magnet where you won't lose it. One more problem. When I got my T8 I got three very nice pre-formed cases of jigs. After taking them out and admiring how well they were made. A tip would be to take a picture of all your stuff before you take them all out. It takes a while to put everything back. Kind of like a round in a round and a square thing in a square hole. I am super impressed with all the Tormek product and support of them and my supplier.

  • @ThekiBoran
    @ThekiBoran 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It seems like Tormek should sell a knife jig that can center a 5mm knife, (or maybe thicker, I'm not sure), and then sell cheap, color coded plastic shims of various thicknesses that clip over the spine to accommodate knives of different thicknesses. Not only would the shim center the knife in the jig but it would also protect the knife from scratches from the jig.
    So instead of putting tape on the knife you simply slide on a plastic shim of the appropriate thickness. The blade is centered and the finish of the knife is protected.
    I would suggest having U-shaped clips/shims of .5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm that are U shape that clip over the spine, then have a flat shim that is .25mm that can be placed between the jig and whatever shim is used. That way you can get within .25mm of centered. The .25mm shim would be white, the .5mm would be yellow and as the clips/shims get thicker they get darker in color.
    I should add, a .5 U-shaped shim/clip would be .25mm on each side.
    Or the shims could be flat and you just slide them in to the jig. Many people have talked about the lack of the Tormek jig being able to center a knife that is not exactly 2mm or so.
