Is Cambodia Safe to Visit in 2024?

  • Cambodia: It's more safe than you probably think. Being in a new country can be uncomfortable at first, and tourists and expats tend to irrationally fear for their safety. How does the safety of Cambodia compare to more developed countries? As someone living in Siem Reap, Cambodia for over a year, and I have both statistics and life experiences to decisively answer this question. I discuss both crime and healthcare for Cambodia in this video.

    The CDC has some great information on the risks when visiting Cambodia, found here: wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/yellowbook/2024/itineraries/cambodia
    Most of what the CDC says is just reinforcing what I said in this video, but they go into a bit more detail regarding infectious diseases.

    I just moved to Siem Reap and made 1 year visa, its really great... Better than Phnom Penh where I lived 3 months in summer months - more livable, more clean and by 30-40% cheaper.

      Not sure I understand - how long were /are you "in" SR ? -- Just got there or just 'finished' a year ? -- Thinking of retiring there on my $1500 SS and hoping it's enough ?!? - - - I'm hearing I should be fine. I am frugal but I will need AC in a small studio and decent food. High BP meds costs are a concern ? Don't drink or smoke. -- Looks beautiful from the US - I think I will love it. - 'If' I can handle the heat ? - - - Heard some do actually live there on about half my income ?

      @@frankkluz9787 already living there for a month. If you want quality food - then it costs more. I dont eat street food - its trash. A/C working all 24 hours at lowest regime - around 120$ a month. If you are alone and dont have bad habits, dont eat like crazy - 1500$ will be enough for you to have nice apartments with A/C working…

    I left the country back in 1979 after I had to live through the genocide under Pol Pot killing madness. Most of my family members did not survive as we were forced to move out of the Phnom Penh City in 1975 to work in the rice fields.
    I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from the US to heal the past.
    Cambodia has come a long way since the prolonged civil war was officially ended upruptly in 1998. Here, you do not have to worry about mass shooting and gun death violence like the first world countries.
    Be mindful of your surroundings . Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible as life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Happy and safe travels from a genocide survivor ✌️

    Allen, can you talk about the weather and climate in Cambodia? My impression is that like in Central America, where you have to spend your life indoors in air conditioning. Do you have videos of interviews with retirement age expats and couples in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap? Are there Khmer immersion courses a person could take to learn the difficult language? How is healthcare in Phnom Penh?

      Yes, he was arrested for staging an abduction and inciting a panic. He was given a fair trial with legal representation and was convicted. You would get arrested in basically any country for that, regardless of whether or not you're a tourist. What else would you expect? Cambodia honestly has a pretty lax legal system in comparison to the West.

    • @Allen_in_Asia
      @Allen_in_Asia  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      No, the statistics show quite the opposite, and personal experience agrees with them. You could ask 100 expats in Siem Reap what crime is like, and they would all give you the same answer, "Virtually non-existent."

      Just come and live to see what it's actually like. Phnom Penh might be a different thing, but Siem Reap I can guarantee, it's pretty safe here. the only thing to worry the most in Siem Reap is road accidents but still it's not as bad as Phnom Penh even Thailand.

    • @theasianjaywalker4455
      @theasianjaywalker4455 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Allen_in_Asia I think a lot of the controversy I'm seeing here in the comments might be when there are shifts from Siem Reap to 'Cambodia'.
      Is the USA safe? I can tell you that you can leave your $3000 bike unlocked in (trying to think of a comparison) Smithfield in Utah. Ask 100 residents and they can't actually think of ANY crime. Ever.
      You probably don't want to leave your bike unlocked in South Salt Lake.
      I'd be astonished if someone tried to assault someone in *downtown Calgary* 'CBD' area at any time of day or night. I would NOT want to hang round downtown outskirts. If I live in a suburb in a nearby city I'm rarely seeing any crime of any kind.
